 Every star is free to be who they are in the sea. Or...something like that. It was something Sternbild's mother had said, but, alas and alack, Ilta was not exactly the cleverest of individuals. It made Stern a bit self-conscious that, though to be fair, everything did. But still...his mother was so flighty, and his sister wasn't around anymore, and he'd never met his father--had he inherited his intelligence from that mysterious arctova? Sternbild didn't know, and the lack of knowledge was driving him, as landfolk said, batty.
It left him swimming around endlessly in circles around a submerged rock, full of energy with nowhere to go. Finally tired--and more than slightly dizzy--he took a different tack, heading further out to sea. He hoped not to find other novae--unlike his mother, he wasn't much of a one for company. Company judged him, watched him, criticized everything he said. Or at least, he was sure they did. He always felt like other novae were doing so, and land stars, too, on the rare occasion he met one. It was a frustrating and more than slightly frightening experience.
So in general, he tried to stay alone. Tried to stay away from other stars. It was just better that way, in every way better that way. Or at least, it seemed like that.

 OOOH where was Arash, he was supposed to be back Hours ago! The brightly colored Nova was frustrated, she had all sorts of jewelry to make and her materials were no where in sight. The mare had come halfway to meet her brother because he was always so late! She'd come early too. This was the route he always came home. But he wasn't coming.
"Arash, get back here this instant!" She yell-whined impatiently into the blue abyss. She sighed dramatically, there was no way he would hear her. He's too far down oooh, why was he so laaate. He better not be playing with that pretty mare that took care of the baths again! Oh he would get it if he was. She had commissions to finish! The Queen had her swimming in circles trying to get these things done. Now THAT was a mare with fine taste in jewelry. The golden queen was fabulous in every aspect of course. Perfect hair, Perfect coat, Perfect clothes, perfect accessories. Eee! It made Noelani so excited just thinking about it. The queen was just gorgeous! She just loved making things for the queen.
Oh and she had a perfect man! The Queen's husband was equally as handsome as the queen was beautiful. Noelani giggled quietly picturing the Queen and King in private. Oh how lovely it must be. Why didn't she have a gorgeous mate like that? Noelani wondered. She was fabulous herself, she had a gorgeous blue coat covered in strikingly gorgeous features. Complimentary too! The blue purple and gold meshed together wonderfully she was just the perfect shades of all three. Topping it off were her icy blue transparent fins and mane. Her brother was quite handsome too even if he was a bit of an airhead.
Well that airheaded brother of hers better get back here soon or else! Noelani fumed her forelegs crossed angrily.

Sternbild almost missed the shout of another nova somewhere off in the distance, across the continental shelf and on the lip of an abyss. Stern knew about the crevasse there from his mother's stories--it was deep, but not excessively so. It got down to the freaky-freaky layer, as his mother had referred to it (where everything had big eyes and a star got a headache in their whole body swimming through there) but no further than that. It was a fascinating place, if you liked feeling like water was crushing you to death. Exploring the crevasse was exactly why he'd come out here in the first place. But in the three days he'd been in the area, he'd seen neither hide nor hair of another star.
So...where had this one come from? This darn curiosity was going to be the death of him, wasn't it... Stern swam cautiously towards the abyss, keeping an eye out for whoever had been shouting. He almost missed her--her purplish-blue hair blended into the water and the speckling on her back looked like little fish. She had rather pretty fins, though--all clear and ice blue like glacial melt, and those eyes were as lovely as a tropical dawn. Stern made no attempt to address her, merely watched and waited, his tail slowly undulating up and down to keep him in the same place in the water column. He didn't want to creep the mare out or startle her--and she probably would be startled to see a strange stallion she'd never met.
Actually, that line of thought started a whole cascade of worry. What if she found it creepier that he was watching her without addressing her? What if she got startled and went into the abyss? What if she attacked him, or laughed at him, or--Stern sighed and gritted his teeth, then swam forward in a wide arc so that the mare had a chance of seeing him long before he actually got close to her. When he finally made his approach, he asked her softly, "Would you care for some assistance, ma'am?"

Almost on cue another nova stallion appeared. Oh how fantastic, he was so polite and thoughtful! such a sweetheart. Noelani got a look at him. Not too shabby appearance wise either he could definitely accompany her in search of her brother. Noelani hadn't realized he'd been watching her, she was far to concerned with how late her brother was. "Oh I would love assistance Dahling! I'm Looking for my brother he's late and I fabulous have work to do!" She smiled at the other Novae.
"Your well swam out here aren't you?" she asked him "haven't seen a stallion gold and blue similar hues to myself but he's late." she huffed. Swimming in a elegant circle. "I want to make Jewelry for the Queen." she huffed like a diva "This is just disastrous."
She paused "Oh Where Are my manners, introductions, I'm Noelani, from the herd Nostos. It's a mixed herd full of such fabulous culture!"

Sternbild wasn't sure what he was expecting. She reminded him a bit of his mother in the way she talked, but unlike his mother she was...he wasn't sure what the word for it was. She seemed to be paying at least some attention to the world, though not necessarily to a part of the world that Stern understood in any way, shape, or form. "Uh," he said. She was smiling at him. It was a very pretty smile. Unfortunately, he didn't know what to do with that smile. He'd never met another mare before other than his mother and sister. Meeting a female he wasn't related to was, um...
Intimidating? Yes, that was a good word for it, intimidating indeed. She was looking for another stallion, too, which was...well, it was intimidating in another way, he thought. Then again, some inner voice he'd never heard before said, if they look similar, they're probably related... "Uh..." Stern said, then shook his head. That new voice was rather distracting, and it wasn't helping at all. He was gaping at this poor mare while she asked him a question about her companion and was obviously in distress and he was just gaping at her. "Uh," he said at last, "no, I'm sorry, I'm afraid I haven't seen anyone at all today, um...I'm Sternbild. But you can call me Stern. People call me Stern. Or they would, if there were people. Who called me anything." He shook his head again, feeling like a total fool. "It's nice to meet you, Noelani. Uh, if you need to find your friend, I could help you? I'm new around here, but I might be able to help you find your friend...four eyes better than two...that kind of thing..."

He was gaping and Noelani couldn't help but unconsciously preen Tossing her mane a bit dramatically here and there fluttering her fins.. Noelani could understand his nervousness, she was FABULOUS! And confident at that. She thought she out to quell some fears "Darling, the stallion I am waiting for is my brother, and he's Late." She huffed at the end comment glancing out at the empty sea. Where was that jerk! Leaving her hanging like this that's definitely not how you treat a lady.
"It's a pleasure to meet you Stern." The mare smiled politely aah now unfortunate that he hadn't seen Arash though. Where was that brother of hers.
"Hmnpf foolish brother of mine how dare he keep a lady waiting." This is his fault for being late she was still a bit annoyed he wasn't here but then smiled at the other Novae "Oh Darling that would be fabulous if you could!" she said giving him big eyes. "I hope nothing horrible has be fallen him." Though she might be a bit worried he was her brother after all. She mused Stern may be somewhat hesitant but he was quite a gentleman.

Ah, yes, right, family, definitely family, obviously family, a brother, in fact (she had even said earlier, pay attention, Stern!), one that was annoying her right now even though he wasn't nearby. Stern hadn't spent enough time with his sister since his foalhood to know if he would be annoyed at his sister in such a situation--maybe a little. Then again, maybe he'd be annoyed with her if she was huffing and complaining about him being late.
After all, she was right--he could be hurt or something. Maybe her fluster was just a cover for the worry and genuine concern she had for her brother's whereabouts. An underwater canyon could be a dangerous place for a lone nova. He wondered what the two of them were doing out here. "I'll take a look for your brother down below, then, if you want to check up here? You said he's blue and gold? Or is he gold and blue?" He shook his head. It didn't matter, his chances of finding more than one nova down there were pretty slim anyway. "And is there somewhere in particular I should look? I mean...does he like corals, or caves or something, is there somewhere specific he would be? I mean, if he got stopped by something. What's the most likely to stop him." He blushed. "I'm sorry, Noelani, I'm blathering, I'm hitting you with a million questions, I just thought I'd narrow my search radius down first instead of just charging in willy-nilly..."
