Rep wasn't feeling good. It was a given lately that he felt shitty, given the situation with Rin and the ongoing drama with Jordan, but it had - somewhere along the line - escalated into something more, some deep seated and insatiable irritation that made every single small thing a hundred times less tolerable than usual. His temper, which had been at a low and depressed ebb lately was back in full force and everything met with indignation.

He'd had to give up on working at the bar for the day when the windows shattered and he found himself so angry and determined to get back at whoever was responsible that there was no choice but to stop. He'd found himself without a distraction and on his own, never particularly good combinations at the best of times, he didn't much fancy his abilities to keep out of trouble.

Figuring he might as well take the day off, he'd made his way to the labs to take his name off of the duty roster when he purely by accident found himself faced with a figure who tapped right into many and varied traumas in his immediate past. And somehow on the scale of desired vengeance, being ignored completely for several hours was a more grievous slight even than almost tearing the heart out of his chest. In the moment there was no doubt in his mind that the other man deserved it, that he'd had it coming a long time, the only doubt in his mind was why he simply hadn't done it sooner.

In a heartbeat Tracey was summoned into his hands and he charged the Life leader, bringing the axe down as hard as he could at him.

The doctor, having been caught between irritation and glee after pinpointing ground zero for the recent blast, greeted Rep with a charming grin.

Then stepped past the axe's guard and punched the younger man neatly in the kidney.

Rep should probably have been stunned out of his attack by the punch which made both him and Tracey simultaneously hiss in pain and surprise. It should have been a wakeup call that the other man was simply not to be ******** with. It might have also been a hint that he should quit while he was ahead that his own weapon was still pretty much in thrall to the Doctor's own.

But none of these things occurred to Rep. All there was was pain and outrage that he was being dismissed again and a strong and overwhelming desire for vengeance which outstripped most of his reason. It wasn't fair, nothing was fair and he needed to teach a lesson for all the awful things that had happened. Most things could be traced back to H he was sure, even if no one ever successfully did so it only made sense, it only made sense that he was to blame.

"You've ******** me over for the last time!" he snarled, still slightly out of breath from the strike, and swung the axe all over again. "This is for ignoring me!"

Catching the blade with his hand, H grinned, all teeth and good cheer as his shield crackled briefly. Around Tracey, Marie's spines swiftly restlessly.

"And what would you do, dear boy, if you well and truly had my attention?"

"I'd make you see me." he snarled. "I'd be worth your attention, I'd be relevant." Because it was a simple fact that they were all expendable, that they could be used up and spat out, and normally it didn't bother him, but today it was like all the hate, all the dammed up rage was too much to bear.

"And you wouldn't be able to hurt Ace." As if he could believe that could ever be the case.

The force of the weapon multiplied with the more Rep went on, and it began to actually cut into the doctor's hands. His smile, if anything, widened. "So you want to special, is that it?"

Throwing back his head, H laughed, loud and full-bodied, "You come all this way, survive and thrive against odds entirely against someone as stupidly reactive as yourself, and this is what you ask for? All this time and you're still hoping daddy will appear and tell you that you're a good boy. That you're worth something and not just the sad result of a disappointing equation involving a prostitute and a leaky condom."

His free hand reached up and flicked Rep's nose, and he continued with a confidential air, "You have a sister you know. Apple of your father's eye."

It had been a long time since someone's words had cut so deeply past his defenses, right to the very quick of his being. There were no snarky retorts he could make to the Doctor this time because every word was true. It was in his heart of hearts what he wanted, to be told he had a purpose, that he was worth something, that he was more than just a mistake. And hearing it out loud made him want to retaliate with the same ferocity, but getting traction on H in any way was like trying to climb a smooth marble cliff face, there was no traction, no handhold he could find. But the very nature of revenge meant that he intended to try.

The mention of a sister had thrown him off guard and off balance, even moreso to think that his father, that elusive figure he'd never known cared about her, about a b***h rather than him. All he could do was push it aside and not give the smiling man what he wanted. Because he wanted to know who she was, wanted to know where she was, but he couldn't because he would try and kill her, because it was all she deserved for experiencing the love he had not.

"Well I'm ******** sorry" he snapped "we can't all be cold monsters. We can't all be ******** self sufficient robots. But you know what? At least I'm not alone anymore, at least I have people around me who would maybe not like to see me dead. A family." And his voice pitched up a little. "When you die, when you get old. Or older at least, the world will ******** exhale. No c**t will miss you."

And he swung, because he knew it wasn't true, not really, and it hurt to think about it, because he would miss the Doctor, despite how much he hated him right now, despite all the things that had happened to him as a result. Because he was ******** broken, because indifference and abuse were on some level what he wanted and because he owed this man - this monster - his life.

And that made him want to hurt him all the more.

The axe connected with the doctor's shields and power surged up it, only to be consumed by Marie. The spines lengthened and began to constrict painfully around Tracey. "And yet those people aren't enough for you, are they, William? Just like your mother wasn't enough. And you know why, of course."

He stroked a hand down Tracey's length, and Marie soothed though the sensation for Rep would be more than a little uncomfortable. "It's because you know that anyone who actually cares about you is wrong."

Tracey's distress alone was almost enough to strangle a cry out of Rep as Marie tightened her grip. The fallen angel did not feel pain the same way Rep did, but this was worse than pain, it was a very primal violation in the demon's mind. No one touched him, no one other than his wielder and those on the end of his serrated blades. Marie had been present too long, far far too long and like a slow constriction in the coils of some great snake he'd found it harder and harder to breathe, to exist, to tolerate such a slight upon his freedom.

But what hurt more than the twist of control, of the pain that wracked them both - because they were so close together now there were no gaps, there was no cutting off that Tracey's distress was his distress and Tracey's was his - was the Doctor's words.

Because again they were true, again they cut so close to the bone they almost took his breath away. Because people could do whatever they wanted to his body and he wouldn't be there, he wouldn't feel it. But when they reached past it, when they reached into his mind, into his neuroses and coping mechanisms, it was a pain he couldn't escape.

Tracey screamed with rage and indignation when H touched his blade but Rep couldn't hear the sound, all he could hear was H's statement that anyone who cared about him was wrong. And it was true, it was the crux of everything, the lie he lived every day of his life, hoping against everything that Harrison would never ******** realise the grievous mistake he'd made. It was why he had to keep him away from everyone, everything else, because one day someone might tell him and then he'd be alone again.

His voice cracked as he tried to push forward onto Tracey, to strike him, to do anything to make it stop. "<********> you." was all the coherency he could muster, there were no arguments that stood up.

The hit was solid and it was quickly becoming apparent that despite the doctor's lack of concern, he was nowhere near as strong or untouchable as a leader should be. "You're wrong, though," he continued conversationally, "about Harrison being safe. If you ever become more significant than an occasional amusement, he'll be the first to go. And it will be all your fault."

And just like that, with that single comment, he dropped any and all attempts to fight the other man, lowering Tracey to the ground, completely cowed and defeated with one single threat. There wasn't an inch of bravado or defiance, it was a complete and total surrender and the only reason he didn't desummon the axe straight away was because of the slim chance that the Doctor might not want him to.

He braced himself for the worst, but whatever fight he had had gone out like an extinguished flame. "Then I won't ever be significant."

A hand tenderly stroked Rep's head as the doctor gently reassured him, "No, you won't." Without another word the contact ceased and H walked away.

Rep didn't even watch him go. He just stood, feeling sick and hollowed out until the suffocating tempest of emotions subsided enough that he could move and breathe again. It hurt that the gentleness had soothed him, that his instincts had leaned into the contact like a stupid and domestic animal that even as he was kicked he licked the boot that kicked him. He felt violated when the man had been nothing but honest.

He couldn't face the bar after such a raw assault with the truth, he couldn't face the thought of petty ambition or a false hope of acceptance. He couldn't face the support of other people, he couldn't face anyone.

Instead of any of these things, he headed off in the direction of the solitary cliffs, any and all thoughts of revenge snuffed out completely.
