The meeting had been once, a super sailor coming to his 'rescue' as a regular scout to offer advice and naproxen. It had been a strange, but pleasant enough evening- one of the two people he'd seen carrying bags of needful things. That had been a lesson he'd well taken, though not every night. Coats and the occasional bag for carrying had been adopted for not only himself, but had become a part of the Idea, in a way.

Has it been so very long? That I was a basic senshi when she found me... "My name is Irene. Super Sailor Irene, of Peace."

Surely Peace would find some value in the idea. If not to participate herself, in at least spreading the word. Predicting what any individual team or scout would think or do was a moot and maddening task. But Irene specifically had spoken of listening to others, even when not agreeing with them. She'd spoke of wanting to support the spread of knowledge at least so far as the benefits of teams. It made her an excellent candidate for some of the branches of his idea. His musings came to a pause, thinking back as he typed a message to her. Inwardly, he scowled, though his face remained a stone-impassive.

She spoke of introducing me to Iris, of all people. Called her 'helpful'. I couldn't disagree more. Well. One bad apple need not spoil the barrel, and if Iris ends up coming....it is no different than any other of the 'older' senshi that have been fractious and unable to unite. She will be one difficult bird among many in our forest.

SMS (Thraen):

Irene, it has been many months. Maybe you won't remember me, but you helped get my cincher off when my ribs were broken. It was last fall. We spoke of the need for unification and teams, for cooperation among the members of Order. I'm arranging for a meeting, and I'd like to talk to you about it. I'd like your help getting as many knights, senshi and mauvian together as possible if you like the idea.
I don't know when you'll get this, but I'll wait in one of the estate gardens near Crystal. Maybe you still attend there, which would make it close. If I don't see you tonight, I'll come back the next couple. If you're with a friend, I remember you said you patrolled with teammates, its no trouble to me. I'd still be happy to catch up.

Sorry about the wait O__o''

Despite her attempts to meet people, many of which involved some downright unsafe practices, Sailor Irene's social circle was still fairly small. The time she had spent focused on college applications and finals took away from the time she could spend patrolling. Or wandering around by herself, unchaperoned and vulnerable, talking to people who possibly wanted to kill her.

Her graduation was days away, and she had started to walk back from work on her own again, when her senshiphone went off. This wasn't so unusual; she got occasional messages from her teammates about where to meet for patrol, or places where an extra pair of hands were needed. But this wasn't from any of the Asteroids. Instead, it was from the senshi she had met some months ago, one of the people to set her on the path towards forging open communication lines. She hadn't forgotten any of the people she met, and certainly would never forget one who had given her such inspiration.

She hadn't gotten very far with the whole communication thing, school being what it was, but the text was incredibly exciting. This was... it was... "This is great!"

Of course I remember you! I'm glad you're doing well, and am excited to hear about your ideas. Anything that can help us work together has my full support.

His addendum about her teammates made her pause. Truthfully, Irene wasn't supposed to patrol on her own. Iris would ream her if she ever found out, and probably ground her on top of that. The only way she justified it to herself was by claiming self-defense: going home as Irene was less dangerous than going home as Lydia. The fact that Lydia took taxis and Irene walked was ignored.

Thraen probably wouldn't tattle on her, but she still didn't want word to get back to Iris or the others. There had to be a way to explain her lack of company without tipping her hand. It took her a while to think about it, finally realizing that the truth was the best way to go.

I've just finished work, so I don't have anyone with me now, but I'll see if you're still there. If not, we can meet up another night.

I'm looking forward to seeing you again!
~Irene~

She had never explored the gardens around Crystal in depth. And while graduating didn't mean she never could, she felt a bit of regret for the paths not taken during her four years there. Then the moment was over, and she went on looking for Thraen. She was afraid to call out- were these places guarded?- but she stayed on the paths, trying to enjoy the scenery while she searched.

The nigh-month straight of nightmares meant waiting here or there wasn't problematic. He was exhausted under his normal schedule often enough- the robbing of the few hours of any day he normally slept of restful repose was crippling. Standing around waiting in a garden at least meant there was no enemy bearing down on him. It meant no immediate need of sharpness of mind to relay information, either, even if that may be the end need.

When he head and felt an approach, Thraen's mind came back from the visions of the column of blossoming black. His muscle protested slightly life and movement from their perfect stillness before as he shifted from leaning against the trunk of a tree towards the walking path to meet the comer-

"Irene, this way. " She was sticking to the paths, which was good for finding others if not for converse. Not that the tree he'd been at was far off the path. He looked her over for like signs of haunted sleep. Or anything unexpected and new. "I hadn't expected to prompt a reply, but I'm glad of it. With things as they are, a need for a support system seems all the more urgent- people are going to have trouble in life and on patrol if they're strung out without rest. "

"Your team is well?"

The power signature Irene had been expecting was that of the basic senshi she had met, or maybe a Super like herself. When she first felt one stronger than that, she dismissed it, wondering if someone else was also using the garden as a meeting spot. Maybe they could all talk later, depending on how things went. It wasn't until Thraen called to her that she put two and two together and got Eternal.

"You look wonderful!" she remarked, taking in his new look as she walked closer, mindful of the uneven ground as she stepped off the path. Once she was close enough to see his face clearly, she bit her lip- did he have that scar before?- but didn't voice her concerns. "You seem to have been busy since last we spoke," she said instead. "Congratulations!" She beamed at him, trying not to stare, and finding that she could wholeheartedly be happy for his progress. The person who envied the power that everyone but her seemed to be able to grasp was gone, and she didn't miss who she had been at all.

His worry made her worried though, her smile fading as she listened to what he had to say. And as for her team... she thought of her last discussion with Evie, of what she and Ellie had figured out about purification, of what Metis had recounted about the night at the warehouse. "As well as can be expected, I suppose. I can't imagine any of us could be considered fully well... though I admit, I wasn't aware that the situation had deteriorated enough to make unifying efforts 'urgent' rather than simply 'important.' Did something happen?"

'Wonderful' is a kind descriptor. Not one I would have aesthetically chosen...but kind. Planty, green, botanical...I smell like a high end perfume boutique. He led back to the more secluded area near the tree he'd been leaning on with swift strides. The congratulatory notes were confusing- for being alive or for...being something? He didn't follow. Which was more fault of his own preoccupation, since it was a really normal conversational progression.

"Are you...not having the nightmares? Every time you sleep deep enough to dream, whatever you dream, all ending the same in all living things petrified as stone and ash in terror, colourless, as a column-pillar of growing black consumes the city?"

"Every sleep it comes. I've met a couple to whom it has come, no relation between us to explain it. I haven't found one of the enemy to see if they suffer the same. But it reeks of their work, like the amorphous black tentacles that grasped and tangled people at Fate last year, just grown huge and beyond scope of any single senshi power. To come so oft and nigh on a month in succession is no dream. It is affliction or it is providence.
But the need for some connection between us all is borne more that restless, sleepless we all become more vulnerable. More likely to make mistakes. A mistake at the wrong time and alone could mean death against a sword, scythe or spear. "

It was fun, or at least pleasant, to catch up and discuss what was going on. Or so Irene thought, until Thraen mentioned nightmares. She frowned, not in fear, but confusion. "How did you know about that? I didn't tell anyone!" Nor had she ever planned to discuss it. If anyone knew she was having bad dreams, they would surely thing she was nothing more than a scared little girl, unable to handle the changes that life had in store for her.

Unless he had them too, which made no sense. And others as well, which made even less sense. There was the chance that he was just fishing, that he assumed she was plagued by nightmares because she was- what? Weak? Young? Uncertain? Except he described hers in such perfect detail that she knew that could not be the case. As she listened to the explanation, fear began to set in, though the confusion didn't budge. How could multiple senshi have the same recurring dream? What did it mean? Was is really a warning of some sort, or something even more ominous?

"I thought... I thought it was just stress. Anxiety about entering a new stage of my life." Which sounded sort of ridiculous in the face of what he had just told her, but at the time, it had been a logical conclusion. Dreams didn't have to bear any obvious relation to their causes. "I'm graduating next week, starting college in the fall. I assumed it was some sort of test from my subconscious, or something..." Because any lingering concern over something she was looking forward to was surely just a chance for her to surmount that obstacle and move forward.

Now she could see the urgency, and she nodded solemnly. "Of course, we must make sure that everyone is aware of the situation. There may be others who don't know the truth, who think these nightmares are theirs and theirs alone." Or else she was the only one silly enough, and self-centered enough, to come to that particular conclusion. "But how? I can start by talking to Iris and the others, but my range of influence is limited. I've been busy- college applications, finals." Would he think that a poor use of her time? Irene hadn't felt that way, until she began her walks again and saw how much she had missed. "It's not that I haven't been worried about this," she said defensively. "But I need to ensure my education, or I won't be able to be of help to anyone."

Her role was not that of a fighter. She had to find other ways to achieve her goals, both those of Sailor Irene and those of Lydia Sfakianos.

It was like watching a the revolution of a carousel from horse to horse and colour to colour- Irene's emotions shifted from surprised to uncertain, fearful then uncertain, solemn and then...defensive?

Thraen blinked, his own expression not changing once for the duration.

"I ...didn't imply that you were remiss. " He quirked his head, looking at her eyes and the set of her mouth, as though he could find some tracings of the reason for guilt and anxiety on that subject in the face of justifications he'd made just for why the Watch was more important than ever. "Or did not mean to. Your life is your own, and your priorities likewise. What I think or not of them does not effect, or should not, their importance to you. Irene, your learning and college must be some great part of your motivation, and as the Harbinger of Peace, that is not a poor thing. There must be guides and gentle hearts to succor the worlds when this war is over. You asked for reasons of urgency, I only obliged on that one account."

"Starting by talking to your teammates is a good idea, even if you malign your own circle of influence. Telling a team means they can all talk to all they know. It is like Seven Degrees From Kevin Bacon- if everyone tells all they know and talks to them, then eventually everyone knows. And from what I am familiar with of your team, ********* and Iris know a great many people. At least on account of the nightmares."

"The establishing of a Black Watch, while peripherally a support system that would help, may take more convincing. If they agree to come, and to pass the word along both, it would be a great boon. Any help that could be provided- ferrying those who don't have their own Moon Pearls, and ********* if she would be willing to cover signatures at a ferry point, would also be wonderful. If that is possible, you could send word to Ash or myself. Ash is a Mauvian, and she's been working on an announcement system over all the phones. The plan of the meet up will be related that way as well...flawed in that it won't reach the knights. The knights must be word of mouth."

"July 12th is my target...it gives enough time to get the word around and organize who will be at ferry points and where they will be. Mauvians to block auras and have the moon pearls on hand to hand out to those who come...pairs situated at the ferry points so that while one ferries the other can greet comers and protect their Mauvian. "

Just as quickly as they went up, Irene's emotional fortifications began to come down. It was true that she had felt attacked for her choice of priorities as of late, but Thraen had given her no reason to believe that he would disapprove of her choices. Since she hadn't started in college yet, she didn't have any hypotheses about projecting her own uncertainties onto others. Instead, she found another explanation, a constant source of anxiety she was comfortable with pinning one more conflict onto.

"I'm sorry if I jumped to the wrong conclusion." Really, that was kind of mortifying. "I've been arguing with my parents about the whole process, I guess it's hard to let that go." Not that they didn't want her to be educated. But their viewpoints on how to accomplish that differed. They always had; now that Irene was old enough to make her own decisions, those difference more easily became arguments. Which made Thraen's tacit approval of her choices all the more meaningful, and her misunderstanding all the more shameful. It was hard to say which of those was responsible for her cheeks taking on a distinctly rosy hue.

Worse still would be to dwell on a subject better left to rest. Besides which, she was far more interested in the other things he had to say. "********* and Iris do know many more people than I do," she agreed. "I'll definitely ask them to spread the word when they can, and the others." Metis certainly ran in different circles than Parthenope, who would know different people than Hygiea would, and so on and so forth. When she looked at them as a whole, she knew they were capable of doing a lot.

But the strength of the team was no excuse for being lax in her own work. She had to keep pushing herself harder, or she would find herself being carried by everyone else's efforts.

"A Black Watch?" she repeated, frowning slightly. Something about that name sounded familiar but she couldn't quite place it. The idea itself was absolutely amazing. "I'd love to be involved in a support system of any kind! I'll ask ********* if she can help, and maybe I could assist with transportation?" She held out her phone, which, along with a small jade disc, had a white pearl hanging from it. "I've never used it before. But that is what the Moon Lady said we should use it for, right? Sanctuary, planning, that sort of thing. So it's perfect!"

Well, almost perfect. Irene pursed her lips as Thraen mentioned knights, and her tone became almost chilly. "I'm afraid I haven't had much experience with knights." Outside of one specific knight who tended to infuriate her. "But for this cause I'd be willing to try to reach out to those I meet. Everyone should have the help and support they need." Even arrogant, inconsiderate louts like that guy. Just thinking about him made her angry, and she needed to take a couple of deep breaths before continuing. "July 12th. Understood. I'll do my best to spread the word in the meantime. If that's what you want, that is."

It sounded like he wanted more advertising, but it was hard to be sure, and after her earlier mistakes, Irene didn't want to make any more assumptions.

"Do I come off like a parent?" It wasn't a new idea, really. He'd not had friends growing up often because of that impression some took away. Others assumed he was prideful, or bossy, or aloof. The exact read probably depended on the other variables of conversation and situations at the time. It wasn't necessarily bad to be authoritative if he had intentions of protecting others- the key lay in whether others believed him capable of protecting them and trusting in his judgement should their own have fallen to panic. Parents were often in that role, but it was not limited to them. I can't think of anyone that would make a worse actual parent than myself, really. If she's seem some of her own in me...Alois said the same didn't he? Aspects of his father. Am I 20 or 400 all over again.

"You have both a Moon Pearl. By all means, if you are willing to help with the Ferry system, I would be grateful. " The disk he guessed must be for the Surrounding? Like his own, gift-grant from Aquarius. Maybe Irene's came form the other woman, or from...another zodiac of some sort. If there was one for every sign of the Western Zodiac, then there must be many out there to encounter. "Spread if you are willing, by all means. "

Her reaction to the mention of knights was interesting. His own was mixed, but few and far between. She looked incensed. Thraen bowed to her, sketching it courtly as learned for madrigal dinners in Renaissance costume. It could have come off as mocking, but his tone and eyes, when he lifted them were sincere. " Brave be the one who wants and then MANAGES to anger Peace herself. I do not envy the source of your ire. But I am honored by your willingness to work through it."

It seemed like a serious question. Irene gave it some thought, wanting to respond with a serious answer. "Not a parent, exactly. Perhaps more like how I imagine an older brother would be? I don't have any siblings, so I can't know for certain. And I'm not even sure you are older than me, but the way you carry yourself makes me think so." Was that a compliment? It was meant to be one, but maybe he didn't want to be thought of as an elder. "You seem... mature. Dependable. So I want to be someone you can depend on, too!" Ideally, she wanted to be someone her whole team, and the rest of the senshi, and everyone else could depend on. But she had to start small, one person at a time. If those who knew her couldn't trust her to be there for them, there was no way anyone else would.

This would be an excellent starting point. "I'd be glad to offer any assistance I can. My, ah, Moon Pearl- is that what it's called?- is at your disposal. I didn't know they were uncommon, but I guess there were senshi who missed that meeting-" they had to be the lucky ones- "and those who awakened after it. It's the least I can offer. And if there's anything else I can do, please don't hesitate to let me know. I can't promise to have a solution, but I'll do my best." Thraen was dependable, but she couldn't help but think that if he was allowed to, he would take a disproportionate amount of the shared senshi burden onto himself. Just by starting an ambitious project like this, he was at risk. She would have to watch carefully, and give him other options, so that maybe it would never come to that.

Which was, she supposed, the key purpose of this whole venture. To make sure that no one had to shoulder their problems alone.

She was a little embarrassed that he noticed her frustration with knights, but delighted with his response, and offered a deep curtsy of her own, pretending to hold a much longer skirt than the one she wore between her gloved fingers. His actions didn't come off as mocking to her. Not like that one guy who seemed to show up just to show off. "If only you could demonstrate to them how a knight is truly meant to behave. You may have missed your calling. But then, I can't claim that every senshi is a shining example of etiquette either. Not only would we be letting them down if we shut them out because of it, we would be closing ourselves off from otherwise helpful allies." Her own captain was one of the biggest offenders on that front, which constantly frustrated Irene. Iris was so strong, both physically and morally. Imagine how much more she'd be able to accomplish if she didn't run the risk of ruffling feathers every time she opened her mouth!

" I had no siblings myself, but being an older brother is not so bad a feeling."

Pleasant, even. It left enough room for someone to spat back at him if they felt he was being unduly unfair. "So far, you've seemed thoughtful and dependable the few times I've had the pleasure to talk to you. If you're just enrolling into college, its probably I am a couple years older. I went to college early, but even for that I'll be graduating this winter semester. As long as I can keep it up with TAing and the portfolio show."

"Valhalla, Babylon, Aventine and Nysa have all seemed polite enough the one time I've met them a piece. Each unique, but that is usual. You are right about senshi sharing in the variability of manners and helpfulness. "

"Either Ash or myself will drop you a message of what ferry you will be at and with whom. Thank you, Irene. This is all a big step, and if we're all brave, and patient, it will work. "

At least her answer hadn't offended him. Irene was relieved; the last thing she wanted to do was to anger someone who had been such a big inspiration for her. While she had been off finishing her senior year, he had been making connections and doing something about what others might dismiss as a hopeless situation. And he was a college student too! Amazing. She was tempted to ask how he managed it all, but bit back the question that would betray her lack of- what? Not confidence. Experience, possibly. Sure, it was only natural that he knew more about how to juggle priorities, but if she wanted people to rely on her, she couldn't constantly paint herself as a novice at everything.

She had to say something, though. And while she struggled with finding an appropriate comment, Thraen mentioned the knights he'd met. Most of the names were not familiar, but then he got to the end of the list, and Irene's fingers twitched. Nysa. Would he be there? Ready to assume the role of savior even when she didn't need help? Would he regale the others with tales of how she'd been waved in the air like a rag doll by a youma, or how he'd figuratively saved her from herself?

It seemed she would have to put her claim of being able to put aside her differences for the greater good to the test, and sooner than she had anticipated.

Suddenly she didn't feel like talking anymore. "I'll make sure to check my phone for messages. And thank you! You're the one who's getting the wheels moving. I look forward to seeing where they will take us."

Not to mention who would be coming along for the ride. It would be incredibly disgraceful if the presence of an outlier wound up forcing her to eat her words.

Ivynian
Fin on my end, I think. Thanks as always! <3
