Danny was bored.

So bored.

The most bored Danny had ever been, which was to say.

Very bored.

"Can we go home yettttt?"

There was something really disturbing about the picture presented here. Rikki was bent over a book, his hair clipped back so it didn't get in the way while he read. Yes, read. Like studying. Except with a whole lot more on the line. He was dead serious about getting Danny's memories back.

He looked up, look tired and exactly as bored as Danny felt. "There's gotta be something in here, we just gotta keep looking."

Danny had long since stopped looking at her book. While Rikki (hardly) entertained himself with the books, Danny had taken to exploring every inch of this library for the year. Danny knew every scratch, every odd mark. She played with children when they visited during the day with their parents. She beat all the games on the computers (also meant for children). She knew every one of the librarians by name and personality, and they knew when she was coming in so they could specifically ask for other shifts.

She just didn't have the drive that Rikki did for her memories. At first, yes. She'd been just as curious as Rikki as to their courtship, and wanted to know that which she'd lost. After a while, it just ... didn't have the same effect. The more she got to know Rikki, the less she needed to know about her past.

Of course, she'd never tell him that. She wasn't completely oblivious- she knew this bothered him more than he let on. If she just came out and said "who even cares" he would come back with I care. So she played along, visiting the libraries, the archives, the museums, the boogeys- everything with him and pretending to be interested in it.

"But we've already read all of these ones!" she whined. "We already missed like half of socket monsters!" They probably wouldn't even make it home for scowl rangers. The horror. "Can't we call it a day?"

Rikki pushed the book away roughly, frustrated. "I just don't understand how we haven't found anything. We've been looking forever." He pushed a hand through his hair, forgetting the clips were there and causing half of it to come free.

He knew Danny had run out of shits to give about this a while ago, but it still bugged him. She had no idea what she was missing out on, but he didn't want to carry the memories alone. That felt lonely and wrong. "I don't know where else to look."

Standing up from her spot at the table, Danny said, "But you'll think of more places!" She went to the other side of the table and looked over his shoulder at the book. "I'm not very smart and you're pretty dumb too but together we have to find something, right?"

Her arms slowly snaked down his shoulders to his chest, Danny resting her chin in between her arm and his head. "C'mooon. Please Rikki? Pretty please? With scaries on top?" This was pretty much the same tactic she used literally every night they came here. "Finish the one you're reading and let's go home?"

Rikki hummed noncommittally. He didn't want to leave yet, he didn't feel like he'd accomplished anything today, let alone in the last few weeks. Danny was right, he was pretty jacking dumb, and the chances of him figuring this out were getting slimmer.

He closed the book he'd been reading and stood as if he was prepared to give in and head home, but then he caught a sign out of the corner of his eye.

Restricted books.

"Oh jack. Why haven't we looked there I'm so stupid." He reached down excitedly for Danny's wrist, trying to pull her up and towards where the sign pointed. "The restricted books have to have something. That's why they're restricted! C'mon!"

Danny was glad to see him at least stand up, but was very shocked and blown away when he dragged her somewhere. She was always in the front! Always! It was a very odd angle to see things from.

She looked around, noting that two minipet "gargoyles" that aligned themselves on the archway of the restricted books section had opened their eyes, slowly breaking themselves free of their restraints. "Uh Rikki ... better move fast, okay?"

So as to not kill ourselves with boredom.

gaia_star Roll 1d100:

1-10 = Erotic novel.
11-20 = Really bad romance novel. Not erotic, just painfully cheesy.
21-30 = Children's book. Pictures!
31-40 = Classic tales (like Jack the pumpkin king. History books).
41-50 = A book makes an attempt on your life. (-5HP)
51-60 = A librarian notices you and makes you sit in the children's time out corner for a while. (-10HP from boredom). Now the minipets are watching you and make an alarm noise when you approach. Roll 1d6 and roll 5 or 6 to sneak in the windows without them noticing.
61-70 = Actual legacy/artifact knowledge that gets your hopes up and then dashes them because there is nothing.
71-80 = Comic book. Pictures!
81-90 = A book with funny words. You recite one aloud and a spell happens. Oops. Take away HP as necessary based on the spell severity.
91+ = THE BOOK

Rikki looked back, a little concerned by Danny's hesitant tone, only to realize he'd walked past the minipet guards without noticing. He went a little pale, but he was determined to find what he was looking for.

He quickly pulled a random book off the shelf. It was heavy and fuzzy and when he got a finger between the pages it clamped down. Hard. "Ow ow ow!" Rikki hissed, trying not to yell. The book growled and shook, but luckily didn't have enough strength to do more than leave him with gruesome papercuts.

Rikki frowned, sucking his thumb into his mouth to sooth it. "Maybe that's why its restricted."

Danny, like the very loving, caring ghoulfriend she was, did absolutely nothing but laugh at Rikki being chomped on by some books. Served him right for keeping her here against her will!

She began pawing through books, not really looking as her bad mood grew more and more sour. With each word she read it was like her frustration grew. This book even mentioned memories and it just made her more angry. Like she was actually jealous of this supposed Danny that existed without her.

With an annoyed thump she snapped the book close, turning to Rikki. "Nothing here~" she chimed, not letting her annoyance get to her. "You okay?"

Rikki had already moved on to another book, though his thumb was still in his mouth. Paper cuts were the worst pain. "Yeah, I'm alright."

He thumbed open an old, thin book, only to discover fading pictures and very little text. This was a childrens book, probably complete with dumb super obvious lessons at the end. He flipped it closed and shoved it back on the shelf with a sigh.

There didn't even seem to be a system here. How were they supposed to find what they needed?

Danny grabbed another book, hoping for one with pictures. Pictures would at least be bearable. Instead she was given words she didn't understand, with odd symbols drawn around them.

"Fusce dictum..." she said quietly. "Hey Rikki, you think-"

She looked up at the reaper only to find him covered in purple paint. "Oops."

This one literally jumped off the shelf.

Jumped.

Like a ******** ninja book. Rikki scowled and rubbed the bridge of his nose where it was already turning an angry red.

One more book.

Danny slowly tilted her head to the side.

She didn't know that was even supposed to go there

Rikki didn't even notice that Danny wasn't paying him any attention. Because he was wrapped up in his own special novel.

He idly wondered if he should take notes. Could abs even really do that?

Danny picked up another spell book and accidentally set bees upon herself.

She had to run around in circles looking for a door but none was found so she just ended up with a semi-swollen eye.
