Roslynn Rainwater, or Rose, as she was so affectionately called, was actually here on her own time. Not too many students her age did this, from what she noticed. Lilac eyes flicked this way and that as she moved down the halls, sneakers barely making a sound as she stared at images on the wall of Earth and Space museum. She was in a pair of black slacks and a simple dressy casual black shirt. She wasn't too worried about keeping up with fashion since she hadn't the time nor money to do it. Instead of that, Rose kept up with younger siblings, school work and making sure her grades were good enough that she didn't mess up her scholarship to Crystal.

That was one of the only good things going on in her life. With her hair in a loose ponytail behind her, Rose was really warm despite the air conditioning blowing. Still, nothing could ever beat her love for space. It wasn't just stars she was fascinated by.

Planets, quasars, anything that had to deal with space.

She showed up to her internship early. She'd applied and got the internship here and was way too nervous about it. So, she thought showing up an hour early would calm her nerves. She could go watch the education videos, or just do this. Stare at the new pictures of new galaxies, read the information and just soak it all in. God above, she loved space. She felt so tiny and yet... So lucky to be here.

"Wow," she breathed, studying one picture that was filled with pinks and purples and just so many stars. "Just wow."

Iouri had been trying unsuccessfully for months to find an intern, and it was fortunate that the sole applicant was also supremely qualified. He'd gone to Crystal Academy's brother school, Azure Valley, as a youth, so he knew that despite its flouncy reputation, it was academically rigorous. Any student who'd taken Suri Ellis's science class and done well was more than welcome on the staff of DCEASM.

And she was punctual, too, he thought, already proud of his new student. "Rose?" he asked, approaching her from across the the planetarium lobby. She was studying a series of huge, glossy Hubble Space Telescope prints - Iouri was likewise fond of them, and he stopped to stand beside her and gaze up at the pillars of gas and stars.

"I'm Iouri Spekter," he said, the remnants of his Russian accent dancing over the vowels. "We spoke on the phone? If you'd like, we can go get your ID badge and I can show you around. Do you have any forms from your school for me to fill out?"

Or - she was here a great deal early. "Of course, if you'd just like to look around on your own, my office is just over that way," he added, pointing. "Just come find me when you're ready."

She was just dazzled by these images. She gave a little laugh as she read the information to the side of the images and then sighed. One day she'd be in space. That was her life's goal. That is everything she wanted to to. Go to space and see everything she loved up close and personal.

Her name was said an she spun on her heel, sneaker squeaking , much to her dismay. Her face colored and she tugged on her bangs before clearing her throat. "Y-yes, Mr. Spekter. I am Rose. Ah... Roslynn Rainwater." Well, she was flustered now and she didn't mean to be. Taking a deep breath, she just held out her hand for him. "Thank you so much for this chance. I.. if you aren't busy now I... can be ready. I mean.. I am ready. I'm sorry, I'm nervous."

It wasn't like her to be nervous but she felt like this was the first step towards her dream.

Well, thought Iouri, if she was ready to go now, then all the better! He smiled widely, charmed by her bashfulness, which he took for enthusiasm. "Don't be nervous," he said, gesturing for her to walk with him back towards the museum's administrative wing. "I'm not going to throw you in the deep end, I promise." Poorly-trained interns cost the museum money, after all.

"ID badge first, and then I'll brief you on everything you'll be doing around here," he said, leading the way. "Just stand there against the wall and smile. Or don't. We can take a few..."

Once Rose was all official, with a neat red DCEASM lanyard to boot, Iouri walked her back to his office. "Docent training is the last saturday of the month and you'll be expected to attend. We have visiting researchers in the collections from time to time - you'll be able to review the schedule and decide if you want to help any of them. We'll start planetarium equipment training next week... Other than that, I'll need your help with basic administrative tasks, and when we have big projects and events I'll give you more specific assignments."

All of this had been laid out on the internship application, of course.

Iouri sat down - not behind his desk, but in one of the two arm chairs on the other side of it. His body language suggested he expected Rose to take the other. "How does all that sound?" he asked. "Do you you have any questions?"

Rose followed him and just listened as he spoke, fiddling with her fingernails before just giving a low noise. Smiling for the pictures came easy. Lots of practice with family photos and her brothers going paparazzi on her at almost all times of the day.

She put her badge around her neck and just grinned wide. Somehow the badge made her feel super important even if she was just an intern. One day, maybe, she wouldn't be. She'd be someone to notice. Some big inventor or discoverer of a new world. A pioneer in stretching the information of scientists and feeding the mind of young students who had an interest in space for more than astrology.

Of course she'd brought herself a flip notebook and pen, which she pulled out of her purse and started jotting down what Iouri said. She'd read this over, of course, but it was good to hear it from an official so it was more concrete.

She settled down in the other chair and met his eyes with a more relaxed smile. "Not so far, sir. I'm good about delegating tasks, time management, as well as multitasking. ...Ah, I've just thought of a question. ...Will I be working late nights on weekends? If so that is fine, I just need to find a sitter for my little siblings."

Iouri noted the notebook and pen, and decided that he'd been absolutely correct in his choice of intern. Rose was as studious and charming in person as she was on paper. "There may be the occasional event that you need to stay late for," he said, "But we can try to work with your schedule for the most part. The museum does close at eight, after all, so I would do my best to not keep you past then, and if even that is too late then we can adjust your hours accordingly. This is not, after all, a full-time job."

Actually, he was pretty sure there was a rule somewhere in the museum's charter about how many hours per week interns could work. He'd have to look it up later before he got them both in trouble.

"I must say," he concluded, "It's an absolute pleasure to have you onboard. I'll be emailing you some materials later this evening - was that your last question? If it was, I'll show you out, or you can just continue to explore the museum if you like. Your lanyard will get you into the planetarium for free."

"If... it's staying late every now and then it shouldn't be a problem, sir. I would have to know a head of time? To tell my parents so I can see if they can be home early to take care of my siblings." He brows knit at that, but she smiled and nodded a little more. Eight wasn't so bad. Still, she would like to know early.

When he mentioned e-mailing, Roses's lilac eyes glanced up and just smiled a little wider, figuring the work part was over. "It was, yes sir. Thank you for giving me this chance. I won't let you down." She laughed a little, the lilt in her voice easy going now that she didn't have to be absolute perfection walking. "I would love to explore the planetarium. Space.. It's just.. I like looking up at the sky and knowing how small I am. It's comforting." Maybe it was anxiety talking, but she'd always felt that way. "That I'm apart of... something bigger than anything I can imagine."

Iouri was the sort of man who planned practically everything he did months in advance, so letting Rose know about events before they happened wouldn't be even the slightest problem. He smiled at her, eyes twinkling a bit. "Of course," he said. "Most of our functions here at the museum are planned at least a month before they happen, so that we can properly advertise them. There's a an online calendar that we use among our staff that I will share to you."

Her enthusiasm about the planetarium was refreshing. More and more museums he'd seen were switching to digital systems, but Iouri had refused anything of the sort in the renovation, unless it was to augment the existing projector. "I'm busy this afternoon, so I can't show you around the equipment right now," he said, "but perhaps later in the week I'll make time."

Iouri nodded at that last sentiment. "I feel that way, as well," he said. "Please, go enjoy the show."
