Lex gave an exhausted sigh, setting down two cups of coffee and a tray of scones he managed to scrounge up quickly after getting the text from some tech that he needed to "work his mumbo jumbo brain s**t" on Evan. Now, Lex liked Evan, and any other day would be great - but this was hell. He'd gotten an hour of sleep, still sore from the events that happened in that unknown desert, and had his own issues to deal with.

He sat in his chair, patiently awaiting the arrival of the man with crossed legs and a mildly pleasant look on his face.

Mandatory evaluation his a**. There was nothing wrong with Evan that needed to be evaluated, not that he would ever let on if there was, but apparently some higher-up decided he needed to learn how to use his words instead of taking his frustrations out on the training dummies and the shadowlings. It didn't make any sense: a healthy amount of anger was a good thing in a Sun, and it's not like he took it out on other people.

Except for now, of course. "This is bullshit," Evan informed Lex as he stormed into the Lifer's workspace, throwing himself into the chair across from Lex and regretting it as his healing ribs protested. It only made his scowl deeper, and he crossed his arms over his chest. "Just write down whatever you need to to get those assholes off my back so I can get back to work."

Lex became concerned very quickly the second Evan entered, throwing himself on the chair. That had to hurt. He'd probably sustained similar injuries to Lex's own, and putting that much pressure and force on bruised or broken ribs? Not the best of ideas there, bucky.

"I understand you don't want to be here." Lex said calmly, sipping at his coffee already. "Scone? Made them this morning." He indicated with a nod of his chin, and his eyes fell on Evan's coffee. It'd to him good to get relaxed a bit. He probably wouldn't though.

Evan shifted in the chair to ease the pressure on his damaged side, his only concession to his injuries. Pain was easier to process and deal with than the larger, less tangible and definable problems related to his mental well-being, and he would rather have broken all of his ribs than have to try to talk anything out. He wasn't a talker, he was a doer, and he was ready, right about then, to talk about the possibility of Lex doing some anatomically impossible things to himself.

"Glad we're on the same page," Evan replied, his eyes narrowing in suspicion as he was offered a pastry. "Not that I don't trust anything Lifers make..."

Lex left the plate by Evan regardless, leaning back in his chair and crossing his legs, hands folded in his lap as he looked at the blonde man, expression neutral with a small, practiced smile. He'd been wanting to do this for a while now, not to Evan specifically, but just in general. The mind was fascinating, plus this was his chance to actually help the island out.

"We may not be the most ethical of groups," Lex agreed, shrugging a little, "but baking is my sanctity. I would never defile it with experiments."

"Yeah, I've heard that before," Evan drawled dubiously. "I still don't drink coffee I haven't made myself. If they're so safe, why aren't you eating them?"

Evan didn't really give a damn about the scones, even if they did look pretty good, but he figured the more time talking about Life's weird obsession with using food as bait for their human experiments was less time he had to not-talk about his problems.

Lex wanted to roll his eyes, but didn't. He was trying to be a professional, after all. Couldn't let the patient see that he was getting flustered. Instead, he picked up a scone of his own, bit into it, and took another sip of coffee. "A bit of paranoia is good here, on this island." He started after swallowing his food, clicking a pen and jotting down a note. "It'll probably save your life more than once."

He unfolded his legs, then recrossed them in the opposite direction. "Do you have any hobbies, Evan?"

"I'm sure it already has," Evan replied, watching carefully as Lex ate his breakfast. That there didn't seem to be anything suspect in the scones or the coffee, Lex could have inoculated himself against--whatever it was. Maybe the mysterious it was just slow-acting. His eyes flicked to the pen and his lips twitched into a frown. He hadn't meant to give Lex anything to work with.

Evan straightened in his chair at Lex's question, his eyes focused straight ahead. "Corporal Roberts, Evan G. Identification number 201-36-8951."

Ah, a soldier. Lex scirbbled a few more notes down, maintaining his own straight posture as he set the pen down, tapping against the clipboard. "Military? Thank you for your service." He nodded, using the formality to attempt to draw Evan into more conversation. "Which branch, if I may ask?"

Evan had been fully prepared to treat the rest of his session with Lex the same way he had been taught to react to any other interrogation, but hesitated as Lex thanked him. Thanked him, like he had done something other than his duty, with no sign that his gratitude was anything more than the simplest of kindnesses.

He couldn't not respond; he had been raised better than that. "No thanks necessary," Evan replied, stiff and cautious. "It was an honor and a privilege to serve." He could have--should have--left it there, but he mulled Lex's question over and found it harmless enough. "Marines," he answered eventually. He could always refuse to answer questions down the line. Hell, he could always get up and walk away, but that would probably find its way into Lex's notes.

Marines, hm? A little note on that was jotted down as well, but the pen was set down quickly. Evan was a good man, it seemed, just a little misplaced with his anger from what he'd heard. Lex didn't know the full details, but he'd been informed of the basics. He'd hurt another Hunter - badly. Lex would stay objective, he promised himself, no more of the petty judgments and looking down his nose at people who reacted to situations in terrible ways.

"So, would you tell me where you were stationed? A little about your life in the service? If not, I understand - it can be a sensitive topic."

Sensitive. Lex didn't know the half of it. Evan wondered if his "psychiatrist" had access to whatever passed as files around here. Probably not; if he had, he wouldn't have asked because he already would have known the answers to his questions.

"I would tell you," Evan replied and continued after a pause for effect, "but then I would have to kill you. Sorry. Those are the rules." He managed to look solemn and serious a beat longer than was proper or appropriate before the corners of his lips curled into a smirk.

Evan earned a genuine chuckle from Lex, the taller man shaking his head with mirth. "Don't tell me you were C.I.A as well? That'd make for quite the extensive file. Too heavy for me to lift, I think." He grinned, taking another bite of scone. Evan may have scorned them, but Lex enjoyed the treats, at least.

So they did keep files. Good to know. "Nah, I tested too well to join the Lack of Intelligence Agency." Evan grinned politely. "So, how heavy's my file now?"

Lex shrugged, still smiling. "I wouldn't know; I'm not officially the island's therapist. Nor am I stupid enough to attempt to break in to Caelius' office and steal a file on a Hunter." He jotted down something more on the page, smirking. "My own files on you, however, are only four bullet points long."
