 The sun beamed down, setting the stallion's fur ablaze with a red glow. Sweat streaked down his side, sparkling with little bolts of electricity. Occasionally, the bolts leapt free to jump across his skin, some fizzling out into nothingness as they found a way to escape his body. None were particularly big, requiring minimal energy and concentration to maintain.
The imp snorted, eyes narrowed against the glare. "Ade, is there any shelter nearby?" He called up, trying to locate his trusty familiar. The soft whoosh of leather wings warned him of her approach as she suddenly launched herself into his mane, gripping onto the hairs tightly with her little claws.
"Didn't you think of that before you set out this morning, doofus?" She twitched her ears, giving him a scowl. "Aye, there's a watering hole just ahead. Big trees around it. Can't miss it." She chittered in annoyance, disliking the heat. She much preferred the cool dank of a cave, especially on days like this.
"You're a life saver, thanks Ade!" The stallion refused to be put off by his familiar's attitude. Sure, it was hot, but he liked it. After all, hadn't they been shuddering in the snow all winter? The bat grudgingly acknowledged his thanks, more intent on making a show than actually being annoyed.

Qing closed his eyes and raised his head towards the sun, enjoying the warmth spreading across his cheekbones. He breathed in deeply, savouring the sweet summer air. He loved days like this, where he could just relax by the pond and enjoy himself. Peace and quiet had been a tough thing to find when he was young, so he relished the notion of it now.
And he had to admit, it felt nice. No one around, nothing to disturb his pleasant daydreams as he rolled about in the soft grass. Not even Aur, his companion hawk. The bird had been busy nesting over spring, and from what he had last heard, he was tending his offspring still, teaching them the ways of the world. Qing was happy for him, and he knew he'd come back once he was done. They'd even come to meet him once, Aur and Zakur, one of his sons. It had been fun to see them together, they were almost polar opposites. Where Aur was calm and disposed, Zakur was flighty and full of boasting. No wonder Aur had been gone for a while, the family must have been tough to keep under wing.
Qing smiled, glad his familiar was happy. The two had bonded when Qing was still a foal, and Aur had watched over him diligently. The two had a tight bond, born of mutual respect. The bird was almost like his adoptive father, there when no one else had been. It was good that he had his own life, and his own family, to keep him busy now.

The stallion trotted forwards, his ears pricked up and expression eager despite the stifling heat. Adenah was perched upon his back, her small claws woven tightly into his mane to keep herself from falling off. Her wings were pressed tight against her body, helping her to minimise her air resistance so she wouldn't go tumbling off. Of course, this only ended up making her even warmer - though not as warm as if she were flying. "You Soquili have no sense." She chittered away with half-annoyance. "You should be hiding in a nice, cool, dark cave. It's bad enough you're out in daytime, never mind daytime during this ridiculous heat! No sense at all. Brains full of rotten leaves is what you've got."
"If I'm so silly, then what does that make you for tagging along with me?" Edan's voice was deep and full of laughter. He was used to Ade's attitude, and he even loved her for it. After all, she'd been looking out for him ever since he popped out of his basket.
"Loyal." came her sharp retort. The stallion let out a loud guffaw, his bellows echoing through the trees. "Oh, well I'm glad I provide you with so much entertainment." But a small smile played on her lips despite her snappish words as she buried her face deeper into his mane.

The faint echoes of laughter drifted to Qing's ears, carried across by the soft breeze. He perked his ears up, trying to catch a hint of who it was and what they were talking about. But still he didn't really move, preferring to curiously listen with his eyes still closed and body stretched out to soak up the sun. The laugh belonged to a deep-voiced stallion, that was immediately obvious.
Snippets of conversation floated to him, "silly... make you... with me?" Qing smiled in amusement at the apparently light-heartedness of what he was hearing. There was a second voice as well, a chirpy female. His mate, perhaps? Or just a friend? A sibling, even? Her voice was much clearer, he caught her entire last words. Evidently they were getting closer. Qing cracked open an eye, wondering if they were heading towards the pond. He raised his head for a second, should he get up and make himself seem presentable? But then he let his head drop, his cheek gently resting on the soft grass. Screw it, he was too content and comfortable. Getting up sounded like far too much work.

Edan's head broke through into the clearing, his eyes absorbing the scene before him. A small pool of water took up the main focus, though a pleasant meadow was dotted around it. Small flowers were scattered between sharp blades of grass, standing strong despite the unrelenting heat. It if continued, they would probably start to dry out, but for now they bloomed with vigour. And lying atop them off to one side was a very small Usdia stallion.
"Pardon me, stranger! May I share your watering hole? I have been travelling for a while and would be happy to move out of your way as soon as possible if that is your wish." He called out a friendly greeting, not wanting to intrude if the stallion was particularly territorial. A lot of Soq could take the wrong opinion from Edan, not only was he often buzzing with lightning but he was quite bulky for one of his kind. Of course, most were friendly and he greatly enjoyed their company, but he had found it was always best to check just in case. "Osiyo! My name is Edan."

As the voices continued to approach, Qing forced himself to accept that he would probably have to get himself up and break his pleasant daydreaming. It wasn't that he minded, not at all - it just felt as though the sun was draining all his energy, melting him down into the warm ground. But he slowly managed to roll himself over, giving his mane a lazy shake to try to wake himself up somewhat. He gave his back wings a quick flap, sending a blast of air across his hindquarters.
And as he watched, a masked face broke through the bushes at the edge of the meadow. The stallion's mane was a similar colour to Qing's own, black streaked through with orange, but it was his eyes that drew Qing to him. They were a pair of dark pits, absent of any colours bar black and grey. But then the stranger's features broke into a smile and sang out a friendly greeting. Qing immediately responded in like, "Osiyo, Edan! Please, come and share in my company. You, and your companion, would be most welcome." Qing couldn't see the female voice he had heard earlier, but he assumed she couldn't be far behind at all.
"I am Qing, may I ask what brings you down this unusual path?" His voice was polite but full of warmth and openness. Given his relaxed state, the small stallion found his tongue to be quite loose flowing.
