In her fervor to serve the emperor, she had strayed from the main battle. But then, she was not afraid: someone must pick up the duty of picking off the stragglers before they brought even more humans and creatures in. And while she was not of a high rank in the court, she was more powerful, Stormy had noticed. How that came about, she did not know. But she had to put it to good use while she still had her mind, before something else tried to take it from her again.

The vague recollections of one so meek and tender were disquieting as she walked. What other nightmares had she suffered in her long sleep?

No matter. There was something up ahead in the same coats as the humans, and Stormy readied her weapon as she approached without slowing down.

He felt terribly lightheaded, like he was unable to process the necessary information at a rate that he wanted to. Gale moved across the battlefield, moving, not towards Medea, as he should have, but instead away from her, his eyes scanning those around him.

He saw one or two that he knew, and several that he didn't.

A few horsemen; he steered clear of those, determined to make sure that he was at a better range for shooting. Sniper rifles were incredible weapons, but they were best shot from a distance, rather than up close, and it was with this thought in mind that Gale kept his distance.

A movement to his left caught his eye; Gale turned around, saw her face, and nearly toppled over in surprise, his eyes wide as he staggered towards, stumbling over debris on the ground.

"Stormy? Stormy!"

Whatever she looked like, it was apparently someone some of these mongrels knew. What disturbed her more was that they knew her name, however, and the moment Stormy heard it her eyes narrowed at the unwelcome familiarity.

She retaliated not with words first but a swing of her sword. She still did not know who the enemy was, but the white and gold coat was enough for her. Thane's choice to revert into a weapon was strange to her, but her body was somehow already trained in the motions--perhaps that was their bond at work.

"You look as though you're lost," Stormy remarked with a hint of condescension.

What was that expression on her face? What was that look in her eyes?

What was she doing?

The sword swung towards him, startling him, and Gale staggered backwards, his eyes wide, his mouth agape. He felt the blade nick at his chest and barely felt it, trying to make sense of it all, his heart rapidly beating in his chest, his breathing quickening until he could scarcely breathe at all.

"Stormy, it's me," he said, lifting his gun automatically in front of him, mostly to stave off her swinging sword. "It's Gale!"

In her irritation her sword bounced off the gun as if it were nothing. Why were they insisting she was one of them?

"Is that supposed to mean something to me?" Stormy asked, her outward appearance still serene, still cold. Thane remarked that there must be something in their water, though it was growing increasingly curious that several seemed to be sharing this delusion. Black magic?

She backed away, quickly perusing her memories until--

"Ah. You."

She didn't sound impressed. Disgusted, rather.

"What a shame. You seemed much more rational than the rest."

Is that supposed to mean something to me?

This, more so than her attacks, hurt, the ache spreading throughout Gale's chest like wildfire. He stared at her, his mouth slightly open, and a flush of color grew across his cheeks, filling his face with a dull red. His hand fell limply to his side, and for a moment he did nothing at all but just look at her.

This is not Stormy.

But it was her, at least in her body. Gale sucked in a sharp breath like he'd been stabbed, his fingers clenching and unclenching at his side.

"It did once," he said quietly, and then, "Where is Stormy? Give me back my Stormy."

She stared at him for a moment in disbelief. Was he . . . And Stormy broke into a few jeering chuckles, because he was. This Gale hadn't said it, but he was essentially pleading. What a nice sound it was after an endless stream of sass and nonsense.

"'My Stormy'," she mocked him, an unusual swagger to her steps as she moved forward again. The grip on her weapon tightened in silent anger. "So then you were the one who stole me away from my homeland. What for?"

She struck out suddenly, knocking the gun aside--

"To fill the hole in your miserable little life by taking me away from mine?"

--then digging the sword into his body, twisting it, runes flaring with vengeful hunger. No matter how deep Stormy wanted to push it, it wasn't enough; something was stopping her from making him bleed. In contrast to the force and violence, her voice remained deceptively cool, her eyes cold and almost unfamiliar.

"'My Stormy.' You are but a boy in a man's clothes, and you will suffer for imprisoning me."

He wasn't going to do this. He couldn't do this, not to Stormy, not to her of all people. Something very wrong was happening here, something he couldn't control, or prevent, or seem to do anything about. She was cold, this mocking, terrible, angry, mean Stormy, and every word she spoke was like a knife to his gut, twisting until he was in agony.

Her sword drove into him, making him gasp, a hiss escaping through his teeth, but still, Gale didn't fight back. The gun disappeared in a gust of white light, reverting to its unsummoned form, and he lifted his hands, wrapping them around the blade in spite of the pain that shot through his palms by doing so.

"No," he said, "No. I haven't done anything to you except to try and protect you, to make you better, to love you, and I'm not going to start messing that up by fighting you - I won't fight you, Stormy!"

In a flash his weapon was gone, and both Thane and Stormy growled with displeasure as the blade was touched, violated. It brought to mind the sickening memories of those hands grasping, pulling, stroking, entwining, touching her body, and it made her sick to remember her reactions.

"Make me better? Love me? You indoctrinated me," she sneered, shoving him back and keeping the pressure up but unable to break his grip. "You made me love you, you spineless worm." And surprisingly, it hurt to say so; the emotion ran strong in her next to loyalty, and knowing it had been wasted on a foreigner was more than a mere insult--especially one so deluded by his own fantasy that he thought honor would save him.

Stormy's eyes blazed as she shoved again.

"Lie down and die if you do not wish to fight. I will kill you one way or another, human; yours will be one of the few deaths I will actually enjoy."

He tried to tell himself that this was not his Stormy; that there was something seriously wrong here, that what she was saying wasn't really what she meant because he knew her, knew that this was not the same Stormy that he had shared hot chocolate with and built snow dogs with - it couldn't be.

Yet even as he was desperately holding onto those thoughts, the pain of them kept sinking in like daggers, her words filling his heart with lead, with pain, with sheer agony and despair. The doubts he'd long ago quenched rose again now, filled his mind with a mess of emotions that made him visibly flinch, shrinking under her terrible voice.

You made me love you.

"You can't make me fight you," said Gale, wincing as the sword drove deeper. He kept his hands on the blade, his face paling. "You can't make me do anything, just like I can't make you do anything. You chose to love me. You were the one who made that choice."

His face was flushed. "Kill me, then, if you want, but I won't hurt you."

The weapon's runes flared to life between them as she glared Gale down with such stark loathing, she would have surprised even herself if she had seen it.

"I was never given a choice!" she suddenly shrieked, and the calm facade broke. "You--You brainwashed me and took me from my land to be your pet, took my freedom and my memories away--!" The charge activated--and there was nothing but a burst of acid and fire and an acrid smell of burnt flesh assaulting the senses. Stormy remained indifferent to her own pain, barely moved even as her power was drained, shoving against her opponent more, wanting that blade to dig deeper and deeper, angry that he wouldn't put up a fight nor simply give in.

It seemed to be a commonality between the two very different Stormy's: the fear and loathing of not having a decision. Maybe they weren't so different.

"I will kill you," she uttered in a lower voice. "I will kill you. Lie down and die with some dignity, you b*****d."
