"To my father, no less! What was it you said? You 'don't trust me' to get there alone safely? Honestly, Akaria. You're saying I need a babysitter?" Imrikalto grumbled with false indigence, stomping a hoof and snorting at his companion. "I am fully grown, I will have you know... As I was when I first met you. I was perfectly capable of taking care of myself then, and am only older and wiser now."

"I'm not saying that you need a constant watch dog, or a companion." Akaria teased in a tone that was equal parts gentle amusement and teasing. The vixen gave a soft bark of amusement, shaking her head. "Sorry, I was just picturing it for a moment.. I'm sure you didn't mean that to be as entertaining as it was, but there you have it. Regardless, I was simply pointing out that your life is much better now that you have me. Which is nothing more than you have said yourself, so don't get offended when I repeat it."

"You make me sound like a recalcitrant colt that has been assigned a nursemaid because it is well known that I am a troublemaker." The dappled stallion grumbled with a playful sulk, pinning an ear as he wove through the woods like a shadow. He had no fear that the shorter-legged fox that was his familiar could not keep up... Akaria had been chasing after him for years, and she certainly wasn't going to let up now.

In her words, she was too old to be training another stallion how to act. Which would be something between annoying and embarrassing if he didn't know she just meant
'You belong with me you idiot.' when she said it.

But he did know, and she did mean it... Which just sort of made it fun to rile the she-fox up... Since they were traveling homeward, there wasn't much to do but talk. They both knew this stretch of woods well, having it wandered it thoroughly before... Since Imri had grown up running wild amongst the trees, he quickly relaxed and fell back on teasing the she-fox that was one of his oldest friends.

Akaria barked a laugh. "There are times you act like a recalcitrant colt... So if course I treat you like it."

"Great. That's just great!" Imri grumbled, leaning down to huff in her ears just because it annoyed her. "Just because I enjoy your company does not mean I need to be watched non-stop."

The fox grinned. "I enjoy your company, so I let you think that."

Avant snorted, breathing heavily. He was almost there. Damn trees, why did they have to be in his way. His legs quavered for a moment before dropping him like his strings had been cut. Flaring his wings to keep from going down too hard, Avant got caught up in the vines hanging from the trees. Cursing every living thing in creation, he tried getting to his feet again, and failed.

He was lucky that he was dark enough that the mottled bruises wouldn't show up against his ribs where the other Kalona had connected with a blow from both of his hind-hooves. It was enough to knock the wind out of anyone. Enough to break at least one rib, he thought. The brief battle hadn't ended there, the pair of them going after each other with a tenacity that was due their breed. Avant saw himself loosing, though, so took a cheap shot to the underside of the other's muzzle, dazing him long enough for Avant to get away.

He lay there, waiting for his breathing to return to normal. It wasn't like he was proud that he'd run, but better that then dead. Craning his neck, he tried to see through the thicket. His home was on the other side of the damn woods, but it seemed so far. He didn't think he could get there by himself. And that stung his pride too.

Cursing, loudly and colorfully, he tried to untangle his wings from the vines.

"Listening to you whine, one wouldn't know you're settled with a mate and full-grown children... You sound entirely too childish!" Akaria taunted, twining around his forelegs and then bounding ahead a few yards. The sound of something large crashing through foliage made her ears swivel ahead, and she slid to a stop with a hiss.
"Shh, something's out there!"

Imrikalto rumbled wordlessly, the sound deep in his chest, then drew a deep breath and opened his mouth to give a suitably sassy remark to his familiar. Her sudden somewhat-graceless stop made him him hesitate, and the concern in her warning had him worrying enough that he moved quickly to her side. Akaria was quick but Imri was big, and if something troublesome was coming their way he would certainly rather it saw him first.

"What do you think?" He murmured, listening to more thrashing and what seemed like exhausted breathing. "Can we help?"

"Do we want to?" Akaria returned softly. "Based on the language and the noise it's making.. It isn't a rabbit caught in a snare."

"A Soquili in trouble is a Soquili in trouble." Imri returned with a shrug, pacing forward through the tangle of trees. It was slow, careful going.. He remembered his father's caution about how difficult the snares could be. But at least Tashika was close, if it was someone caught in the thorned vines again... The quiet Native woman had helped Sibalto, surely she'd help whoever this was...

"Hello? Can you hear me? We're coming to help, just a moment!"

Avant winced as the thorns plucked at his wings, not tearing through, not yet, but he didn't want to pull anymore, that was certain. If he did, he'd have holes in his wings. Stupid, stupid plants. He hadn't even noticed the thorns. At this rate, he was going to be caught here by an angry Kalona and beaten to death while trapped helpless in plant life.
This was not okay.
He started to crane his neck around to see if he could bite though the vines holding him when he heard whispers, two voices going quiet at the sound of his captivity. He went still and silent, trying to make out what they were saying, but to no avail. At least, not until one of them, a stallion by the sound, called out

"Hello? Can you hear me? We're coming to help, just a moment!"

Avant bares his teeth and growled, a low rumble that carried through the trees to his would be rescuers. He didn't want their help, even if he did need it. "I don't need your help!" He shot back, keep his voice low and threatening. Maybe he could just scare them off and get back to trying to figure out how to get out of this mess without tearing up his wings, or the rest of himself, too badly.

Akaria gave the stallion that was her near-constant companion a look, one that spoke volumes without her having to say a word. They'd been together long enough that they were quite good at it, which came in handy when you wanted to have a discussion without someone overhearing. Considering that there was something in the forest, something big and likely dangerous for all that it was caught up, the whole thing seemed quite useful.

Imrikalto read the look and nodded faintly, twitching an ear at the sudden quieting. Well, it didn't seem like whoever it was wanted their help, which of course would make the fox more curious... But then, it also sparked some questions with the dappled stallion. Just who got themselves caught up in a mess in the forest and was too stubborn to accept help when it was offered? He didn't need help, hmm?

"Are you sure about that?"

"You stay here for a moment." She ordered. "I'll go see what it is, and then you can come galumphing in if I need you, alright?"

Without waiting for him to do more than grumble incoherently at her, Akaria bounded into the dense undergrowth, wriggled under a high-sprung root and twisted through some thick undergrowth before tumbling into a relatively cramped glade. A glade filled with thorned vines and one very annoyed Kalona.

Akaria promptly sat and curled her tail around her feet, tilting her head in curiosity. "So, you don't want help? I am curious, how do you plan to escape?"

"Are you sure about that?"

Avant wanted to chew off the face of whatever Soquilli was out there, questioning him in that smug undertone. He wanted to just rip him apart. Instead, he snarled loudly and tried to gain his feet again. He managed it, but not for long, falling back to his knees. The thorns scratched at his wings, not enough to draw blood, not yet, but enough to let him know that if he moved without moving them first, he wasn't going to have much of a pair of wings left.

It took him a moment to realize that he was being watched, and only then because the fox spoke to him. Avant was blaming that on the fact he was tired, to tired to deal with the fox, it's question, this whole backwards situation. That, and he was starting to get a little hungry.

"No, I don't want help." Avant snapped at the thing. "But if you so insist, why don't you come a little closer, and then see how you can 'help' me get out of here, little fox." He didn't normally like eating someone else's familiar, and hadn't managed to so far. Avant figured it would leave a bitter aftertaste, and a Soquilli with a desire for revenge for the fool animal.

Huffing, he didn't want to answer, but knew he was answering to the stallion he'd heard as well. "I don't have a plan. Maybe I just stay here and become part of the scenery." The best possible outcome would be that he would pass out and not feel the thorns shred his wings. Unless the little fox wanted to use her little teeth to pry the things off him.

"Be safe." He whispered after her as he watched the white tip of her tail disappear behind the bend of a tree trunk.

As soon as his little familiar was out of sight, Imrikalto began to worry. And it was foolish because heavens knew Akaria could take care of herself, of course she could and she'd n** his heels all the way home if he said otherwise.. But still. He worried because he had heard all the noise the other was making -a stallion, he knew that much- and that translated to size. Small and clever and swift she was, but Akaria probably couldn't outrun something chasing her.. Maybe if she knew the woods better, though her size would be a blessing and his a curse if they gave chase.. But Imri would feel better about the whole thing if he could just see her.

Before he could even rethink the habit, he was pacing back and forth as he waited to hear from her.

As far as the vixen was concerned, she had all the time in the world. The kalona stallion had managed to get himself into the heart of one of the nastier razor-vine tangles she'd seen in a good long while. It was rather difficult to recall even the story of a Soquili getting so badly tangled, but having no way out. And since she had heard the story of Sibalto's capture and injury, that was saying something.

All things considered, she was rather enjoying the show. He could snort and stamp and huff at her all he wanted. Unless he wanted to ravage himself, he couldn't come after her... And maybe even if he did, considering how well he seemed caught...

"I bet you feel fair foolish." She said in a conversational tone. "Stuck like that. And who can blame you? But is threatening to eat the only one able to help you really your best plan? Do you want to stay here until you die of thirst? Is that how brave and bad a kalona is, now-a-days? I confess it's been several moons since I met one, but I think he was a bit braver than you are now..."

She yawned, flaunting keen white teeth. "If he wasn't, I'm ashamed to have been afraid of your kind as a cub."

Imrikalto's ears swiveled as Akaria's words drifted to him, and he snorted in fury and paced into the trees. "You will not be eating her.. And you will not threaten her again.. Or we will leave you where you stand."
PostPosted: Sun Jun 29, 2014 9:31 am

Avant watched the fox with a look of extreme loathing. It was bad enough that he had to be caught here, like this, but to have someone's familiar mocking him instead of helping him just... pissed him off. He wanted to struggle, to get free and stomp the little beasty into paste. But she was right, he needed help.

Of course, he taunting him just made it worse. Breathing heavily through his nose, he managed to get to his feet again, though his legs shook with the strain. He would face her, and her master, on his feet, thank you. While he could suffer many indignities, and had at the hooves of his sisters, he always faced them standing. And always would. At least, provided his legs allowed such a thing.

He was about to respond, something pithy on his tongue at the endless mocking the feline seemed to enjoy, when the stallion entered, stage left. Avant raised an eyebrow at him and wiggled his wings slightly, showing that he was as able to do anything to her as the other stallion was able to fly. Threats where just his response to her taunting. It was a thing. The other stallion should understand that, he was her master after all.

"I wasn't planning on eating her." Avant said simply, not addressing whether or not he wanted their help again. He did know he needed it, whether he wanted it or not. "Threatening is just how I breath, little stallion. No offense was meant, Or perhaps it was. I don't quite recall." He flashed his fangs, pretending to yawn like the little fox. "Do you actually have any intention of helping me, or are you going to let your familiar sit there and mock me endlessly for being tired enough to get caught up in a thicket of thorns?"

Akaria sighed and fixed the stallion with her best 'I'm Warning You, Lad' look, patented after raising her companion and his son and grandson besides. If you wanted a proper young stallion, you had to train them yourselves, was Akaria's thought on the matter. And she was proud of the family she was a part of, the SilverShadows were a good bunch. Especially sweet, gallant Imrikalto who appeared at the first whisper of danger to her.

Akaria grinned at him and patted one of his forelegs with her paw, soothing. "Don't worry, he's just venting.. He won't really hurt me."

'Not until he's loose, at any rate...' She added silently. It hadn't really been her intention to rile the captive stallion up, but when they got all snappish it just made her snap right back. It as a fault she was working on, but at her age...

Imrikalto bowed his head to nose the little vixen affectionately, using the brush of his nose to make sure no harm had come to her when she'd been out of his sight. He ignored the huff of sound she made like she knew exactly what he was doing, but relaxed as he straightened and she patted at his foreleg soothingly.

Just in time to see the Kalona give him a pointed look and move his wings what little he was able to. Ah, that somewhat explained it. Akaria had gotten her fur ruffled and sassed the Kalona out of some defensive instinct. The Kalona was ruffled because he was caught in the first place, and what he (no doubt) considered an inferior breed was now witnessing his captivity.

Embarrassing, no doubt.

With a soundless sigh and a nod to the stallion, Imrikalto tried to get onto common ground with him. Something along the lines of, 'She has a point, but the way she makes it is least endearing.. and she's been doing it all my life, so I know how you feel.' he wasn't sure if it worked, but the emotion was there.

"Good, she'd stick in your throat and complain all the way down." Imri nodded faintly. "And it would be hard to swallow with me kicking you in the back of the head, so I'd just as soon you didn't try, personally."

'Little stallion'... Well wasn't that adorable?
Imrikalto pinned an ear and gave the Kalona a look. "We'll be glad to help you, on one condition."

"I'll let you say it, and we'll see if I agree." Akaria murmured, giving Avant another warning look. "After all, I may need to make it two."
PostPosted: Fri Jul 04, 2014 3:04 pm

"I'd bet she would. I don't enjoy eating fox." Avant had to admit it made quite an image, him trying to eat the familiar with the stallion kicking him in the back of the head. It would be rather funny until it killed him. Still. "They tend to be stringy."

Avant raised an eyebrow at the stallion, wondering at the sigh and nod. Perhaps the fox was as annoying to her master as she was to him. That was probably the reason that he didn't bother having one. A little creature following him around would be endlessly annoying. Especially if it could talk.

Avant looked up at the stallion, wishing he could fold his wings down because they hurt being strung up like that. He really wasn't sure how much longer her could keep his held up like that before he had to bring them down, thorns or no thorns. And that was something that he really did not want to happen.

The vines were so tangled around his wings that he would have nothing left of the softer webbing if he pulled out by force. Okay, maybe having a smaller animal following one around would be okay in a situation like this. A bird or a fox, like the one in front of him, could use their teeth or talons to move the vines without damaging him too much. Maybe he aught to look into finding one of his own... how did one go about that, exactly?

Shaking his head, Avant brought his attention back to the pair in front of him and sighed. "Let me guess, that if you help me, I am not to hurt either of you, ever, or something like that?"

For the most part, Akaria was content to remain silent as the two stallions seemed to discuss her as though she weren't there. And if she had it right, there was a look or two exchanged that spoke volumes about her. She let them get away with it, for the moment.

Stringy?

"Oh, without a doubt." Akaria tilted her head at Avant. "At my age? Tough as well as stringy, make no mistake."

Imri privately admitted the mental image of this proposed spectacle was entertaining to say the least. And ridiculous or not, a joke or two cleared the air and let him consider actually untangling the Kalona from his current predicament. He shifted his weight slightly and considered the tangle of vines around wings, making note of what he could sever without harm to himself and what would require Akaria's help. All in all, it was a proper mess.

"Something like that." Akaria laughed softly to herself, circling the Kalona where he stood. "As I said, I will hear out his condition before I potentially add one of my own."

Imrikalto watched the vixen disappear into the brush before eying the Kalona. "I know better than to trust the word of a Kalona when he swears to never 'harm either of us ever'. I would settle for you solemnly swearing not to maul either of us the moment you're loose. Let's say, you do not try to kill us today, and leave it at that?"

"Fair enough for your demand." Akaria argued as she appeared again, tail lashing. "But not for mine, and as he will require the aid of my teeth as well, I shall make a demand of my own."

She paced around to where she could look up at the captive stallion, and tilted her head at him. "Is that satisfactory to you, Kalona?"
PostPosted: Sat Jul 05, 2014 4:35 pm

Avant barked a laugh at the little fox. "Tough indeed, not worth eating in the slightest." He had never had any intention of eating the familiar, and as thought it pained him to admit, she was growing on him. Of course, the only reason she was being so bold was because he was bound in vines. Still.

He looked at the stallion and nodded. That was an easy condition to fulfill. "I give my word that I will not harm you until the sun rises tomorrow if you help untangle me from these accursed vines."

Avant waited for him to accept that as a condition and start to free him when the familiar threw a wrench into the works. She wanted a condition too, huh? He craned his neck around to look at her. "Yes, yes, what is your condition then, little fox? I grow tired of this. Either help me quickly or leave me to my fate."

If there was one thing he wanted, it was to be free. If they could not give him that, then they should leave because he would free himself and just wished that there was no one there to see it. It would hurt and he would growl and whine and be miserable, and have to tend to his wings himself. It would be a bloody mess, but he would do it. He just didn't want an audience. This was embarrassing enough, honestly. And he was so tired.

"What is your demand?"

Tough indeed, not worth eating in the slightest.
Well, at least the Kalona stallion could take a hint. Akaria nodded decisively at the stallion, then grinned. "And don't you forget it, lad."

Imrikalto waited until the stallion had agreed before moving to work at some of the more distant anchor points. "Very well then. I am satisfied, and happy to do what I can to free you from this mess."

With slack in the vines, he was fairly confidant some of them could simply be "untangled" rather than being severed in multiple sections. It also kept him out of reach while Akaria made her conditions, on the off chance the stallion changed his mind.

"I will help you in good time, large Kalona, never fear. But as it is aid from me and mine that will set you free, we are both to set conditions for you. His condition is our immediate safety as we work to released you... For he is well understanding of the minds of Kalona, and accepts the fact that we may be your meal ticket in a week's time." She scoffed, shaking her head. "I personally hope that you'll have better taste than that... As a stringy old she-fox and a stallion that isn't much better wouldn't really count as prime eating."

"Akaria." Imrikalto muttered in warning as he pulled another vine until it snapped. "If you would?"

"Yes, yes Imri, alright." She murmured, then turned back to the Kalona. "My condition is this: should you encounter a stallion in peril who happens to be the same color as mine own pelt... But bearing blood-red dapples like Imrikalto, you will aid him as we have aided you. In this request I demand only your assistance, not the jeopardizing of your own life. It should be no more than a minor inconvenience. It is a fair and reasonable request. Would you agree?"

After hearing Akaria demand her favor, Imrikalto hesitated. The idea that his son would one day be in danger was not a surprising one... They were all of them traveling knights, in a way... They were each of them bound to get into trouble, and Ash was no different. But the idea that a Kalona would be honor-bound to aid him, should such a thing occur? It was, interesting to say the least. Fair enough, too, and not so great a request that the Kalona would refuse...
PostPosted: Mon Jul 14, 2014 10:14 am

Avant kept himself very still, knowing that the stallion, should he choose to go back on his word about helping, had a very easy target. Well, maybe not that easy. Even if he was mildly injured, he was still Kalona blood, and would tear himself to ribbons before he allowed a ground to hurt him.

But he seemed to be the honorable sort, so Avant let him try to untangle the vines, keeping still just because he didn't want to get any thorns in his wings if he could help it.

The fox's response made him laugh softly. Large Kalona indeed. He listened to her ramble, waiting for her to get to the point. Apparently her master was of the same mind as he snapped one of the vines. Good. Avant could move his shoulder without getting stabbed. Not that he did, he didn't want either of them to know he could move until he could move a great deal more than he could at the moment. He blinked twice, and turned his attention back to the fox. No use thinking himself into a mire worse than the one he was already caught it.

Avant opened his mouth to agree, and then paused, letting his mouth close again. The request was an odd one. It seemed like an easy one on the surface, since the likelihood of him running into the exact stallion that the fox meant was slim. Something to agree too and never have to follow through with. But the way she said it, like it was already supposed to happen, was peculiar. It maybe just be that she knew that the blue stallion was going to get into trouble because he always did, or because she knew he was going to get into trouble, period. Either way, it was a strange request.

"I give you my word that should I encounter a blue stallion with blood-red dapples I will aid him as you have yet to aid me. I will offer my assistance and nothing more. I agree and give you my word." He paused then. "Now get me out of the damned vines!"

As far as Imri was concerned, for his part, the stallion's agreement was a good enough reason to begin work on the vines. True enough if he failed to agree to Akaria's terms, the kalona may have to simply try and escape with half the vines untangled or snapped... Or perhaps less, if he disagreed before the dappled stallion could make significant progress on the task. But that had no bearing on Imri's own honor, and he had agreed to help.

So, one vine safely snapped and a tangle loosened and he began carefully working at another wrapped around the wingjoint. Which of course made him realize he needed to stop and untangle one of the loops from around the tip of the stallion's wing to allow mobility. Imri sighed and craned his head just so, carefully pulling the looped green points away from sensitive skin and the black webbing on the wing. That done, he resumed work on the vine that lay tight to the stallion's shoulder and tangled around his neck.

"Stretch this wing just a touch, if you can." He murmured when he noticed neither the Kalona nor Akaria were speaking. "I should be able to get two more loops free if you do..."

Akaria actually felt pleased as she noted the Kalona laughing. Whether he was amusesd by her audacity or the humor behind her words was irrrelevent. She rather had a feeling he would agree to her request, though she had expected a somewhat arrogant response that was immediate in nature. But this one was too cautious for that, perhaps he was learning from his experience with the vines. Regardless, he seemed to thoroughly consider the request, and her.

She let him, titlting her head slightly as she watched Imri work on the tangle of vines around the stallion's wing. the middle of his wing was still wrapped in vine, but the tip had been freed to allow movement and Imri was working steadily on the tangle that snaked over his shoulder and around his wingjoint. Not enough to turn the stallion's whole wing loose, but noticeable progress. But then, he was her responsibility and she had taught him well as a colt.

Satisfied her charge had things well in hand for the moment, she glanced back to the Kalona and watched understanding dark through his red eyes. On the one paw -so to speak- he may never cross paths with Ash. There was every chance her charge's little 'Knight Errant' of a son would be have himself, would cease adventuring and finding all matter of trouble. But Ash liked to explore and trouble loved to be found, so she rather doubted it.

And since there was a chance, she would barter for allies wherever she could. She could see some matter of understanding settle in that unnerving red gaze, and tilted her head in question. Instead of asking for more information, he simply agreed, which came as somewhat of a surprise.

"So then you have agreed, and given your word." She murmured, rising gracefully to her paws and pacing toward his tangled hooves. "As you will offer aid to one who is dear to me on a future date, should he need it, so am I happy to aid you today."

She grinned, flashing white teeth, and then slunk closer. "Do be a dear and be still, won't you? I'd hate to n** a tendon by mistake..."
