Hvergelmir was fairly confident -- no, she was sure -- that she'd felt the faint energy signature of a Negaverse officer somewhere around here. It wasn't too common; usually the theater district stayed pretty quiet. She'd followed the energy almost to its source, though, and however she circled around the theater, it still felt distant. In fact, it felt sort of -- high up. Could it be . . . a Negaverse officer was . . . ?

She looked up.

What would a Negaverse officer be doing up there?

Either there was a Negaverser on the roof of the theater, or one was near enough to it, up in the catwalk for some reason. That was a worrying thought: a show was currently in progress, which meant a powered-up Negaverser hiding up in among the lighting would be hard for people to miss. If that was the case, they'd likely have to kill or incapacitate some of the crew members to go unseen. Was the Negaverser up to something?

It was worth investigating. Hvergelmir took a high leap up to the fire escape, then climbed up the metal steps a few flights until she reached the roof of the building, managing (with some difficulty, in her dress) to finally clear the roof.

There was the Negaverse officer she'd sought -- a lieutenant, she thought, if the aura was anything to go by -- near the small skylight on the roof, lit from below by the stage lights. What was going on?

Hvergelmir walked forward with her hands in the air, distaff nowhere to be seen. "Hello?" she called out. "I'm not here to fight."

Even before he became this worker for his master Buddingtonite, Marot LOVED the theater. It was one activity he could always do and not get in trouble for. Atleast.. He wasn't likely to get caught! No one checked the roof when the show started! For someone who never has any money, he was more than eager to steal a show from the skylight. Yes, the acoustics sucked biscuits up here, and the view wasn't the greatest, but it was more than enough for him!

But this night, there was something new! Something white and light and not that far away. It reminded him of the little light that he 'fought' against not too long ago. A sweet little baby he was! And he was glad that he could help the wee baby get all strong and confident! But no, this one was stronger, brighter.. But if they wanted to talk, they could come up here, he wasn't about to miss any of this!

And came she did! Calling out to him, causing him to turn with a bright smile to her. And she was ASTONISHING! Simply amazing and glowing! It was far unlike the little light from before, she seemed so much less scared! And she wore as weird style of clothing, almost like an actor on the stage. But far nicer than the ones he met before. the others called him smelly.

"Fight? You're in a pretty dress! Who fights in such wonderful clothing! But because you're warm and light, you must be like the little one. From the light side. What are you doing here? Are you here for the show?"

This works just fine, thank you!

Hvergelmir blinked, taken aback. There was something off about the way the lieutenant spoke, something overly simple, like maybe English wasn't his first language, or maybe he was just exceptionally gentle-minded. It wasn't at all what she'd come to expect of the Negaverse. Did they really think just anyone could be crushed into the iron maiden mold they used for making soldiers, no matter the cost to their natures?

Well, it was Chaos. Maybe they did. Either way, he didn't seem violent, at least for now.

"No, I didn't come for the show," she said, taking a few steps closer. "I came to see you. I could sense you from down there, like you can sense me. I was hoping we could talk . . . but if you want to watch the show, I don't mind waiting?"

Since the young woman decided to step closer, Marot did the proper thing, and stood up, stepping away from the sky light so that the glare didn't affect how he looked. Not that it mattered, it was only a side thought, in case the woman was curious about how his uniform looked. It seemed that that was a big thing about all these lights and shadows all over the place. It was judge by uniform first, then talk. So far atleast.

He did send one more look down the sky light. It had gone quiet, though he wasn't sure the show was over, or if it was just an intermission. Either way, he had time to talk, time to listen, so why not!

"I think the show is paused. Yes, paused, there's no actors on stage, and it's dark, so we can talk. What did you want to talk about? How did you get up hear in such an elegant dress? I jumped, did you jump? What did you want to talk about?"

The lieutenant spoke at a rapid-fire pace, but the things he was saying were straightforward enough that Hvergelmir didn't have any trouble keeping up. He really did seem to be exceptionally agreeable, for a Negaverser. It made her heart ache.

"I hopped up onto the fire escape, yes," Hvergelmir agreed. "No mean feat in this dress, but hey, it pays to be intrepid, right?" She waved her hands in the air as if to bat that topic away and usher in another one. She'd been waiting to have this kind of a conversation with a Negaverser, practicing the kinds of things she wanted to talk about, and she didn't want to let the chance pass before it got off the ground.

"There's no reason we have to be enemies, you and I," she said. "I'd rather get to know you. Maybe if we learn more about each other, you and I could be friends. Do you mind if I ask you some questions about yourself? Nothing too dangerous, and you can tell me if I ask any rude questions or you don't want to answer."

"Yes, intrepid, yes. It is a good thing." It didn't seem like she wanted to talk more about her dress, but that was fine. He couldn't see her shoes, but with such a dress, maybe she was wearing a pair of those.. Weird, pointy ones that looked terrible to walk in. It would be rude, incredibly rude, to allow her to keep standing! Using his gloved hand, he turned around and began to dust off an area of the skylight he was sitting on, making sure there were no bugs or anything that might offend the dear lady. As soon as it was clean enough for his liking, he sat down, offering a seat beside him on the newly-cleaned surface.

"Friends? YES! Friends! There is nothing more precious than the love you get from your friends. That may not be true for others, but for me, yes, that would be fantastic, brilliant, I'd love to be your friend." A friend, a wonderful friend! So far, that had become the best part of being what he was now. Thanks to his master, he was able to meet so many of these weird powered folk, and no one was mean! There was no anger or hate between them that he had seen. But he hadn't seen much. But he HAD seen kindness and friends! It was a wonderful thing!

"Certainly, certainly, but I do not know much. I know things, lots of things, but specific things. Other things, not so much, no. But you can ask, yes, ask away, i am here to listen!"

Hvergelmir grinned at the unexpectedly gallant gesture. She'd hoped for a listening ear, but hadn't counted on such extravagant courtly manners. In turn, she gave a silly little curtsy and sat herself down alongside her new would-be friend.

There was a faint smell lingering in the area, but Hvergelmir had had worse recently: first when she and Sarras had been pelted with refuse during a youma battle, and later when Sailor Ate had dumped all the funk and detritus of a city block quite literally on Hvergelmir's head. Half-rotted turkey from a dumpster had a smell that few things could match.

"I don't always know so much myself," she confided with sympathy. "Information about this life can be really hard to come by. But tell me about yourself, that's all. What's your name, with the Negaverse? And how long have you been a lieutenant?"

Oh! OH she curtsied! Such an action reminded him of Elle, of the lovely princess whom he had met hardly a week ago. Granted, this woman was far, far fancier than she was. Not that there was anything wrong with Elle! Just.. Fancier. the woman looked as if she belonged in some palace, not up here on some dirty roof top!

Her questions.. Well, they were far more simple than he had expected. But since they were easy questions, they could be given easy answers.

"Schreibersite. That is what my master called me. But it is long, and troublesome to say, so Schrei is alright. But Schrei is a scary name. in German, it is Scream. I do not like it. Screaming is loud, and painful. I don't want to cause loudness or pain to anyone, only to get what my master wants from me. I wish my name could have been something nicer. Is Huggasite a thing? Or maybe Smiletite. If it is a thing, I am jealous of them!" His hand came up, and he began to fidget, picking at the bizarre casing his fingers were stuck in. Normally, he would check for dirt, no one liked dirty hands! But his normal fidgeting technique was invalid, so he could only gently pull on his fingers, seeing if he could readjust the materials.

"Only a few months. I do not do much. I go and gather energy, and then give it to my master, Buddy. Buddingtonite. See, he has a nice name. He's my friend, my master Buddy. Me, what am I? Scream. such an ugly name. what is your name? I bet it is a lovely name. And what are you? You have a light, a light inside, yes a warm light, not a shadow like me, but it is not like the little lights with bows and ribbons. It is a different light. what is it?"

Hvergelmir choked suddenly, trying to bite back a sudden sob, and it turned into a brief fit of coughing. I don't want to cause loudness or pain to anyone, he'd said.

If she'd thought what was done to Avalon was tragic and inhuman, it was nothing compared to this. To take a boy like this, simple and innocent and utterly guileless -- to take him and pump bile and hatred into his chest where it would slowly but surely destroy him -- to give him a new name and a new, horrible collar and turn him out on the streets without compunction like a pit bull puppy being trained to fight for its owner's pleasure -- it was sick. All he wanted was a sweeter name so more people would like him. And all he seemed to know was how to serve.

Buddingtonite, at least, was a name she knew. Hvergelmir had been new to knighthood, then, and when she'd met him, she hadn't known what a Negaverser was, or that they might mean her harm. He'd defended her from a youma. Tried to get her to join the Negaverse. Issued her an ultimatum when she'd demurred on his offer.

That was a year ago, though, and she hadn't seen him since. It didn't sound like he was still a lieutenant.

She wondered what sort of hideous offer he'd made to Schreibersite, if indeed this tragic, sweet-tempered soldier of Chaos was his handiwork.

"I met your master once, a long time ago," she said, doing her best to keep up a pleasant front. "And I don't think Schreibersite's such a bad name. It's just a mouthful -- but so's mine. I'm Hvergelmir Page of the Cosmos. A real tongue-twister, right? Buddingtonite called me Mira -- you can use that too, if you want."

She shifted into the next topic -- his next question -- pressing a hand flat over her chest as though she was trying to feel the light he was describing radiating from within, where her starseed rested. "I'm what's called a knight. Well -- I will be someday, anyway. Right now I'm a page, which are our knights-in-training, but if I do well, I graduate to being a squire, and then a full-fledged knight. You'd be a page too, if you weren't with the Negaverse -- just like me."

Hvergelmir took a long, studying look at Schreibersite, trying to picture him out of his Negaverse uniform and in the bright colors of a knight's garb, smiling and unafraid, free of the Chaos that shadowed his heart and made his aura dim. "Your master," she asked, the words sounding a little unnatural even though they echoed Schreibersite's own phrasing, "is he kind to you? Does he treat you well?"

Startled by the sudden sound Hvergelmir made, Schreibersite reached out to place a hand on her back, patting it likely, trying to make sure she wasn't choking. It didn't look like she was eating anything! Was it spit? Did she choke on that? Sometimes that happened to him, especially when he was laughing too much, but she wasn't laughing. She looked sad, but he couldn't figure out for the life of him why! She seemed just fine a minute ago! And he hadn't said anything that might have bothered her, nothing he noticed.

"Are you okay..? I said things, but not bad things? Are you sad that I am selfish for the name? Yes, it is a name, I should accept it. I am sorry. But it is good you know my master. Or knew him! And I like Hvergelmir. It is natural on my tongue! My home, no, not home, this is my home, but my old home, over the sea in Central Europe, it comes off fairly okay. Not best, but okay. But if you'd like I will call you Mira."

With a nod, he tried to think about what she said, about her light being a knight's light and he chuckled, finding that amusing in his head. But something about him being one too? Now that was weird! How could he be a knight? No, he was a thing, this thing, because his mastered wanted him to be! If it was meant for him to be with a different thing, then his master would have done that to him, right?

"He is good to me, he loves me and is my friend. But sometimes, he says things I don't understand..." Schrei tried to think more about it, trying to get his mind to steady for more than just a few moments. "There are things about a queen, a thing he serves, something big and frightening, but I do not care. I do not serve that thing. No, I serve my master, I serve the one who gave me this power, and I want to make him happy, because he is my master, my teacher, my friend. He was really kind to me when I met him. He gave me something, when I didn't have enough to pay for it, and in exchange, I work for him. I am not a good worker. I forget, and I wander away, but this kind of work, I have not left, because It is there always."

His hand came up to his own chest, feeling the shadow that clouded whatever it was that Buddy had grabbed when he have hurt him the very first and only time. It didn't hurt, but it was heavy. Sometimes it felt like it was choking him until he finally powered up again. But that couldn't have been Buddingtonite's fault!

"Who is your master?"

Hvergelmir shook her head hastily, not wanting to send Schreibersite the wrong signals. She knew from personal experience how easy it was to get disheartened once you knew you'd put someone off -- and though Schreibersite hadn't done anything to earn her displeasure, that didn't mean he'd be able to see the difference. The last thing he needed was to have a lower self-image than he apparently already had.

"You didn't say anything wrong," she reassured him. "I just swallowed funny, that's all. You don't have to apologize to me."

She shifted in her seat, smoothing her hands over her dress to tug a few wrinkles loose. "I don't have a master," she answered his question. "My power's my own. It comes from way up there," she said, pointing to the twinkling lights of the Milky Way overhead. "I'm a child of the stars," Hvergelmir was romanticizing it a little bit, but what the heck. "Free to chart my own course."

She offered Schreibersite another smile, switching to a topic that was a little lighter to try and get a better understanding of her new friend. His relationship with Buddingtonite was something she'd have to ask about more at a later time. "What do you suppose you might want to do, if you didn't have to work? If money was no object? Me, I always wanted to swim with dolphins."

"Okay, good. Good, I'm glad you're okay." He had done that so many times before, so it was all okay. So okay, so she was okay. It was fantastic.

When she pointed upwards, his vision looked upwards as well, gazing up into the countless number of stars. How he wished he could reach out and grab them, hold them in his hands and just gaze at them in more and more wonder, until his mind and heart became a star itself. It was silly, to think about, but.. Yeah, he could say he was jealous of the stars.

Turning back towards her, he grinned, tapping his chin in response to her question.

"I'd want to run. Just always run. Run over buildings and houses and mountains and the sea! I want to run and dance and keep running. Running without getting tired or hungry. and running with my friends. That's what I want. Run to the stars!"

Hvergelmir wondered idly if Schreibersite had something undiagnosed like ADHD, something that would account for the way he described himself, the way he spoke. Difficulty focusing, working, holding down a job -- trouble keeping his thoughts in order -- apparently a resulting lack of financial means. Everything bespoke some sort of trouble that deserved some kind of help.

Well, Hvergelmir wasn't a doctor. She was, in fact, the last person who ought to be armchair-diagnosing anyone with anything.

But she couldn't help wondering -- was this just one more way that the Negaverse was preying on the weak?

What she knew, for now, was that Schreibersite was definitely in need of help in getting away from his apparent 'master' and his life with the Negaverse. Until they managed to work that out, no one on her side could be that much help to him, not without knowing him as a civilian whose life they could maybe help get in order.

"That sounds fun," she told him. "I hope you can someday. So, tell me -- what sorts of things does your master ask you to do? Is it a fun job?"

"You are curious about my master. But he is a good man, I know this. He is good to me, good to those who come to him. He is not a terrible person. I know not much of this thing going on, of this war or of this good and bad. It is shadows to me." Was she worried? The pretty young woman didn't have to be worried about him! He was fine..

"You are a light, and I am a shadow. It is not good and bad, it's just different. The job is not a good one, it is not fun, it makes me take things that are not mine. I am poor, and I am filthy, but I am not a thief, and it hurts. It hurts to hurt them. I do not try to hurt them. I do not hurt anyone. So I might not make my master happy. He's not going to hurt me because I do bad though. He is kind." There was honestly no doubt in his voice about his master. He loved the man, his best friend. The only friend who asked only one thing, to serve him. And he was okay with that, if it meant his friend was happy.

"Hvergelmir, What do you do? Do you have such a friend?"

Hvergelmir sighed, stretching her arms out over her knees. "Your master was kind to me, once, too," she said, thinking back on it somewhat tiredly. That had been a long time ago. The world was terribly different these days. "Until I didn't do something he wanted. I guess . . . it all gets complicated, sometimes. People fight when they don't really have to." She put a hand out carefully to touch his arm. "I'm glad he's kind to you."

The rest of what he had to say didn't really do anything to lift her somber mood. I am poor, and I am filthy. It hurts to hurt them. It confirmed some of what she'd suspected: he was probably homeless, and maybe in need of professional care to get him on his feet.

So it was true, then. The Negaverse was really preying on people no matter what their circumstances. Schreibersite was homeless and needy, with no desire whatsoever to do the things the Negaverse wanted. Even that wasn't beyond the pale for them.

Hvergelmir definitely didn't have any friends remotely like that.

People who loved you didn't make you do things you hated and still expect to be called master. The thought made her deeply uncomfortable.

"Nobody I serve, no," she said. "I think I'd have to really trust someone a lot, for that. I do have great friends, though -- the best. But they don't really need much from me anyway; they're way better at stuff than I am." Babylon never asked Hvergelmir for anything. Aquarius never asked anyone for anything.

"Me, mostly I just try to convince people not to fight each other. I took an oath not to fight people like you just because we're different. Just because you have," she borrowed his phrasing, "a shadow. I'd way rather make friends."
