Personality:
Also known as "Skinny Pete" or even just "Pete", Peter is very, very small for his age. He never really hit the growth spurt that many others of a similar age did, but he doesn't let it make him feel self-conscious. In fact, it kind of helps put food on the table - his small stature makes it possible for him to cram himself into the smallest of chimneys with his sweep, which means he can clean more chimneys per day, which means his boss lets him take home a little extra coin when payday rolls around. Other than making sure he does his job to the best of his ability, Pete doesn't feel like he needs to prove himself to anyone. He doesn't have a Napoleon complex, and he certainly doesn't feel obligated to succeed in order to make up for his short stature. He doesn't hate tall people, or begrudge them for their height. Pete gets by just fine at the height he is, and that's all there is to it.
Peter is pretty fidgety. It's hard for him to sit still, and he's constantly moving. Be it jiggling his leg, tapping his fingers or picking at his clothes (he's unraveled his fair share of shirts), Pete is always doing something. This can be a little annoying to some, but if anyone starts to show any sort of annoyance with him or even point out that, "Hey, Peter, you're doing that thing again," he will stop. For a second. And then he'll be right back at it. It's not that he's crippled with anxiety (though he does suffer from it occasionally), it's just difficult for him to sit still. Even when standing at attention, it's likely that his toes will be worming around in his boots.
The kid has a great sense of humor. He isn't easily offended, and he does love to laugh. He likes to make friends but he can be a little picky about the kind of people he prefers to associate with. On the other hand, if there is a redeeming quality to be found, Pete will find it - and instead of focusing on the negative, he prefers to focus on the positive.
Peter is really, very loyal to his friends. He's a born follower and not a leader, and it's easier for him to fall in line than it is for him to disagree with something that someone else has suggested. He usually will not compromise his morals in favor of someone else's, though; generally, he will only follow along if he agrees with the end result - unless, of course, they make a pretty good case for why he should come along, and then Peter will put his own ideals aside. As long as it makes sense to Peter and he can rationalize it in his mind, Peter is quite happy being a sheep.
History:
Peter has lived in Shiganshina for his whole life. He was raised by his older sister (Johanna, now 24), who also raised his younger brother and younger sister (twins, five years younger than Peter, Felix and Frieda) after their parents passed away in a robbery (though rumor has it that they suffered no robbery, and the carriage they were riding in was not looted by highwaymen but hired hitmen). They were evicted from their home, and so Johanna kept Peter from school so that he could find a job as soon as he was old enough to. At a mere nine years old Peter began working as a chimney sweep. Even at that young age, Peter was smaller than most boys of similar age, and so he was well-suited to the job.
Peter also has a voracious appetite. The amount of food that Peter can tuck away would put most grown men to shame, and he really isn't picky about what is going into his mouth. Thick, gluey gruel? Down the hatch. Filet mignon rich mushrooms and fine, frilly salad? Whatever, down the hatch. Hardtack? Down the hatch. Sweet puff pastry? Down the hatch. It's all fuel, and it's all the same to Peter.
Peter knows how to read simple words, and he can write and spell simple words. He also has remarkably legible handwriting. Peter can also do very basic math, but he hates all of it. He doesn't like books, either. Reading is kind of for chumps, as far as he's concerned, and there's better things to do with his time. Like running.
Peter loves to run, and he is very agile. He is quick and fit, and loves to run for fun. He's also something of the acrobatic sort, and can climb trees (or walls or roofs) like a little monkey so long as there's ample footing.
Peter has joined the Military because the man who ran the chimney sweeping business passed away, and Peter didn't have the means to keep the company running on his own. Still wanting to help put food on his family's table, he decided that the Military would be the best option for him.
