It had been two days, driven by fear of what lay behind him, since the young Hippo'suti had taken flight from his home, fleeing the jungle he had been born to, but never grown to love.

And now, in the dark of night, struggling against the winds of a fierce storm, his muscles burned, eyes half blinded by sweat and rain, only catching the spray of the whitecaps of the boiling sea below him in the flashing light of lightning. A sudden change in the powerful winds sent him tumbling, disoriented and lost.

No, no. Please!, He gasped silently, struggling and straining to right himself unable to tell what direction he was flying. Tears streaked his cheeks, exhaustion, desperation and the bitter sting of it seeming as if nature itself was punishing him for fleeing the unsavory fate behind him tearing them from his heart.. Calling upon his remaining reserves in an attempt to save his life, he summoned a dim light, all he could muster, to see enough to right himself, but was too late to stop himself as he plunged deep into rolling waters.

It seemed to take forever for him to surface, coughing as he gasped for air before another wave crashed upon him. He struggled in a futile effort to stay afloat, only to have his struggles be cut short as a wave slammed a heavy branch of driftwood into his head, and he began to sink as a dark figure loomed up from the waters below.

User Image

The next morning, northeast of the now stilled storm, a rather large, and to many peculiar looking party of soquili arrived at the south western beach of the peninsula they called their home, a collection of various breeds that normally weren't seen together in such a large variety and clear camaraderie, the group having traveled tight against the river to keep close to their fully aquatic companions. Storms often washed shells, kelps, driftwood and, if one was truly lucky, sea glass from the shipwrecks that littered the floor of the bay onto the shore, making it easier for them to collect as a group for crafts without having to depend fully on the efforts of their mer members, and materials that werent washed ashore instead entered shallower water, making it easier and a shorter trip for aquatic members to scavenge and return to the group.

The land dwellers, focused on the beaches and settling the camp, were for now unaware of the pale figure of a young stallion, still too young to truly be called an adult but old enough that some cultures would consider him such, unconcious and draped over the back of the giant he rested on, his lower body dragging in the water, the Female Leatherback unsure of how to take the unconscious boy onto the shore without damaging her soft shell or having him fall off and drag into the water.

Within the depths of the large river system which snaked its way towards the sea from the inland was the large Mer, coasting under the water leisurely at the pace of his land dwelling herd mates. Occasionally he'd poke his head out of the cool waters to make sure he was on par, before dipping back down to slowly let the current drag him towards the seas.

It was going to be a fun day, he concluded, it had been some time since so many had come to the beach coming off the rainy season. The weather was nice after the storm which had drifted through and would bring lots of goodies in the sandbar as well as the beach. Maybe he'd be lucky and find some bling which washed up to add to his collection. Perhaps another cool pendant? Who knew what one could find after a storm surge.

Now he was just too excited.

Breaching the surface once more he smiled to his fellow friends and gave a splash with his mighty tail. "I'm going to go ahead, meet you there broskies!" And with that he was off with a mighty splash, using the current to his advantage and making swift time before the rest made it down. It truthfully didn't take long before everyone was at the beach, having made it nearly down their with them before taking off on his own. Immediately he began poking through the somewhat shallow waters, making sure he had plenty of room so he wouldn't get caught in the sand. It wasn't too long before he could feel the vibrations of something moving along in the waters near by, turning his head and looking around before seeing a dark strange object some distance off. Curiosity getting the better of him he abandoned his bling hunting and headed towards the limbed black object...yet when he was close enough his eyes widened in shock. "WHOA. This is something messed up!" He breathed, a few powerful flicks of his tail and he was drifting in a slow circle to take a look at the poor thing on this sea turtle's back. Bobbing his head in and out of the water he was amazed how...familiar he looked. How much he looked just like his friends....

"Is he alright? What on earth happened?" He asked, rounding about to the leatherback's face.

OOC note: Awanata is currently Unbonded and is NOT Cuetzpaltotl's. So you do not need to count her AT ALL for anything.

"Oh thank goodness" The Massive Sea turtle bubbled slightly from her nose as she spoke in her underwater voice, not moving her mouth as she voiced things to preserve oxygen. Her voice was a rich low alto, her seavoice having a sort of melodic hum to it: a common occurrence for those who knew how to speak with their head below the waves "He seems to be fine, but the poor thing was tossed about by the storm when I found him. He's lucky I came up for air when I did. "

She tilted her head back to look at him, lifting her head from the water slightly, her voice getting a little croakier and raspy above the surface, "He's still breathing, but shivering despite the warmth of these waters and he's yet to stirr. Unfortunately I've already tried to get him ashore once and nearly had him fall back in -- If I get too shallow I can't get back under him and he'd drown, and his tail and back legs catch the ground before I Can get him close enough to shore where he wont go fully under... I'm glad you arrived since perhaps you could help...? Or at least get someone who can. "

As the mer listened to the recount of the wise sea turtle, he looked to this young stallion and wondered just what he was doing so far out to sea? During a storm no less? There was truth behind some of the worst storms in the world happened on open water but....there was little time for true pondering on the why's and how's and they needed to get him to shore so his shivering could have a chance to stop.

"That's awful." He breathed while under water, poking his head up once more to take a look at the stallion and what they were dealing with.

He looks...just like them. J-dawg confirmed, wondering if he was like the other foals they'd ended up adopting during their travels - but he was the better part of an adult.

NO! Focus dude, focus.

Dipping back down he glanced her way, "We'll get him on the better part of the shores; then i'll grab my friends. Although its pretty warm here I think he needs to bask in the sun on dry land. Lets hurry here...i'll take care of the legs and tail and do you think you can crawl as far as you can do with him? Enough to get him out of the water when we roll him off?" At least then his friends could take over, assess him out of the water before carrying him away if needed.

Twisting in the water he headed behind Awanata, hooking the lad's soaked tail feather's behind his dorsal; and propping his back legs against the back of his neck. He'd need to drift along with the sea turtle's movements and crawl a bit onto the sandy shelf; but that should be enough to keep balance for Awanata to get far enough not to risk drowning the poor guy.

Then he'd head for help - thankfully they were not too far off.

Awanata began pushing forwards into the surf rather than beyond the breaks where she had floated, trying not to dislodge the small stallion on her back. As they traveled inward, the venture became rougher and rougher, the massive turtle pausing in order to adjust herself to keep the dead weight of the other pony from slipping from her in the jostling of the rolling waves. Upon close inspection of the stallion on her back showed the little bite marks on his neck from her holding his head above water during the raging stormstorm, while she sported cuts on her soft blubbery shell from the claws of the boy being crashed against her skin by the waves of the maelstrom of waves from the storm, limp limbs tossed sharply against her by tossing water.

The Turtle had clearly risked her life staying a the surface in such a situation to save the young stranger on her back, tolerating pain and injury to herself to protect another she never had even seen before.

Meanwhile on land, one of the smallest members of the herd had to sneak away from the large group as they organized their camp for the week planned for the beach side location, setting out blankets and baskets for their collection. Pacha couldn't help but feel underfoot and in the way, even if she understood they didn't feel she was.

This led her to wander the beach in quiet contemplation , looking over the sand and making quick grabs for items too close to the waves that looked interesting in order to drag them closer to the dunes until something caught her eye. Squinting a bit, she tried to figure out what was floating closer on the waves, the strange mix of colors not fitting with most of what she knew and the shape too odd to figure out at first in the seafoam of the breaks. However a small gasp caught in her throat as she realized J-Dawg and a sea turtle much larger than she was was struggling to get another soquili to shore, "Oh! I-I'll be right back!"

Not knowing if J-Dawg heard her quiet squeaks, she ran down the beach and up to the steep dunes, cresting them before slowly heading to the mass of hooves and busy members settling in, "U-um... Ex..Excuse me.."

She paused, looking up at Cuauhcoatl and Mecho as the two discussed the plans to some of the other soquili, the group not hearing her nearly whisper of a voice. "H-hello?" She frowned slightly, Pacing a bit. It wasn't usual for Cuauhcoatl to not notice his family, but Pacha was always a quiet one, hiding on the edges.

Her ears backed, voice raising unusually loud, "Excuse me!" she waited till the older soquili soquili were all looking her way, "..Someone in the water needs help from someone big."

User Image

"Oof" the turtle grunted as her shell dug into the sand, pressed tight in the water, not enough of the hippo'suti weighted in the water to keep her from being trapped under him, her flippers flapping uselessly as she flung wet sand in her attempts to move forward. The water was still too deep to let the stallion slide off of her without his face falling into the water, and she could go no further, "I.. I hope that little land pony was getting help since.. I'm now stuck."

Once they had reached the shore, J-dawg had begun to concentrate all his attention to wiggle and drag his body to the best of his abilities with his forelegs. He could hear the sound of the sands under them scraping lightly against the bottom of her shell - beached. He gave a few more pulls with his leg as his body supported his tail and hind legs beside her; while still too deep to get him off on their own at least the majority of his body was now out of the sea and into the warmth of the sun.

"Fo'reals?" He blinked and turned his head; squinting his eyes as his vision wasn't particularly the best out of the sea but had caught glimpse of a bob of yellow and blue before it disappeared over the sandy mount. "OH! That's Pacha - you can bet your shell she is." He laughed merrily, despite the situation.

"We don't need to worry, my friends are large land soquili; they'll remedy this post haste." J-dawg nodded firmly, before looking back to Awanata. "You're like...a hero homie." Yet....she was hurt. "You'll have to get that looked at too; seems he did a number to you. I'm J-dawg by the way....You can call me Jay of you like. Either way."

The large mer shifted his tail; using the large fan like flipped at the end to shield the sea turtle from the waves to keep such precious cargo as dry as he could.

From around the mass of tall legs, Ikinya had been busy trying to orchestrate between the smaller and larger of their children. The small purple basket laid quietly at her side, only moving every now and then as the incubating foal inside slept peacefully. Giving a small chuckle she watched as younger and older children, and some grandkids enjoyed he sun together; although Adom couldn't make it, it was still so nice to have all their children back in the homelands more or less for the ones who ventured out.

"Darius! Careful please..."

She mused as the big galut had nearly bowled over Nene in his hurry to splash in the sea - and Nene wasn't a small girl per say. She was about to find a nice shaded spot for the little basket when she thought she heard a whisper of something. Turning her head left and right to try and pick it up she snapped in the correct direction when a louder voice echoed across - Pacha.

"Subira..." She said quickly to the large mare at her side, who immediately understood and stepped over the basket in a shield before Ikinya hurried through the legs to her granddaughter's side. "Pacha, what's..." She stopped and listened; and although she'd said it was probably a job for someone larger - her heart already ached at the news someone was in trouble. Looking out to sea she noticed J-dawg had still not returned, and by the tracks from Pacha in the sand leading down the beach she wondered if he was down there as well.

Ikinya's eyes lifted to pick out Cuauhcoatl, offering a determined smile. "Lets go." With the youngest of their herd in safe keepings with Subira she took off down the beach; knowing Cuauh would make sure to bring along whomever he deemed fit to help. Besides, the curiosity of their family would more or less draw them all over - but the little mare felt the need to go now; just in case.

It didn't take long till she could see the mass in the water, A turtle, J-dawg and...oh no! Steering to the water she slowly wadded in, well up to her belly as she moved to the head of the unconscious lad. "Poor dear...." She breathed, giving the strange soquili a nuzzle to the cheek before looking to the pair. "What happened here?" She asked, although admittingly asking Awanata more than Jay as she was quite fascinated with her- never seeing a turtle so large before.

User Image "H-here is a good location to p-put ou-out the d-drying mats for pr-preserving the seaweed" Before Pacha had returned, the massive angeni stood with a group of larger soquili who were carrying supplies, the members of the Amachi used to packs to their bodies to transport items, while he had, while taking turns with a few of the buffalo members of their herd, pulled a small cart for the smaller members of the herd such as raccoons, Otters, and their Usdia members could ride in along in with supplies, "W-while we should find a p-place above the high t-tide line to build a f-fire p-pit for the salt harvesting p-pans."

"U-um... Ex..Excuse me.."
"How would the area over by that large stand of trees work for hanging things to dry?"

The angeni looked over at the stand of trees in question, having not heard the meek whisper of a voice, "hmm... I Th-think that l-location is in the s-shade far too long h-however, M-Mecho -- If you look over that w-way, there are some well spaced t-trees with Narrow, s-sparcely leafed canopies where we could p-put the strings out f-for drying f-fabrics and o-other materials--" ("H-hello" squeeked a soft and even weakening as it spoke voice under him as he talked) " - one c-could easily make a circle of st-string around them and cr-cross around the middle, making a s-sort of dream catcher shape where e-everything gets p-plenty of sun."

"Hmm I think I see what you're say-"

"Excuse me!"

Cuauhcoatl blinked in surprise, looking around and gently lifting a hoof at a time trying to figure out where Pacha's voice came from, only locating her location once he heard Ikinya respond, his attention now aptly focused on her as she explained that there was someone in the water needing help. The silent communication between the meeting of his and Ikinya's eyes only took a fraction of a second as he nodded his head downward once with a determined expression, quickly meeting up with her and even moving ahead before the swift actioned members of the Amachi could catch up, Zyanya close behind.

As the group gathered over the dunes, Awanata tried to relax. While she was able to haul herself out of the water and onto the sand normally, the added weight of the soquili on top of her had rendered it impossible, but with how securely she was set on the sand, there was thankfully a slightly more stable stand for her back, "I'm not sure I'd really call myself a Hero, Jay -- if I was a dolphin most people would expect this sort of thing out of me"

She gave a light hearted but weary chuckle, the turtle worn by her injuries and efforts, "though I wouldn't say no to a healer if your friends have one with you, though it shouldn't be too necessary... There are so many stories about how Land Soquili have these "unicorn" beings by the dozens and are never for want of healing, while only a few Mers are descended from them, but thankfully he hasn't punctured deep enough to do any more than scaring so I could do without seeking out a healer.."

As she noted motion over the dunes, she craned her neck and let out a faint sigh of relief, seeing the group arrive, her large and strongly beaked head lifting to meet Ikinya's gaze, "This boy got caught in a storm and crashed into the ocean. Something knocked him out -- I've had to keep his head out of the water myself to keep him from drowning.. Would you and your herd mind getting him off of me?"

User Image

"O-o-of c-c-course" Cuauhcoatl grabbed a large blanket from Mecho's pack in his teeth and walked into the water, his form shifting and wings vanishing as he turned into a human standing about seven feet tall, with dark skin marked with an even darker brown birthmark series like tattoos, the markings similar to his soquilian form, an outfit colored similarly to his sunset hues, standing at about 7 feet tall as he waded into the water. Only the hint of teal hair under his headdress, his pointed ears, and bright gold eyes marked him as not being truly human physically.

Taking the blanket from his teeth and holding it in his hands, he worked with Mecho, Zyanya, Mezzo and J-Dawg to slip the blanket between Awanata and the unconscious soquili, grabbing poles and tieing the corners together over the poles with the dexterous fingers of the human form before shifting back to his massive clydsdaleian size, bending down low to hook his side of the pole between the base of his neck and where his wings connected, "W-when every one is ready, after three..... One..... Two... Three-GO!" He lifted upwards and forwards a little, Zyanya at his other side and the Amachi's behind them at a lower level, lifting the stallion off of the Sea turtles back and carrying him out of the waves, moving until they reached above the high tide line.

"Awanata...You saved his life. That's what heroes do." Jay smirked, a crooked type of grin as he chuckled merrily. However there wasn't time for convincing as once the larger soq of the herd were on the scene it was time for quick work. He watched with wonder as Cuauhcoatl turned into a human, and for Jay he would never get tired of watching something so cool. Although he'd been filled in most domained angeni could pull it off it was just so visually interesting. He'd never met a true human native before, and frankly he would be fine never meeting one; but Cuauhcoatl was just one of a kind in his books.

Focusing after on the task at hand he listened to the instructions to get the poor lad hooked up into the carrier. Although Jay was only a little help with his limits on land; as soon as they'd lifted the fellow from him and Awanata he slapped his tail in the water. "Good going!" His eyes turned to Ikinya who still remained in the water. "Hey, she needs some help too okay? I'm going to go get some food for her, you gotta be hungry after all this. Stay with these guys, they're cool." Jay nodded deeply before pushing and wiggling his large body back into the sea; with a thrust of his tail he swam with urgency into the depths of the sea to fetch some sea squirts and whatever else he could scrounge for Awanata.

User Image

"Of course, Jay..." Ikinya smiled kindly, watching the mer disappear into the depths of the sea in a hurry. As much as he was quirky in his own right, she was so glad to have him as a friend in a world they were otherwise unable to access. Blessed to have him as a herd member when to many it would seem obscene a mer joining a primarily land based herd. Turning her attention to Awanata she leaned in and gave her cheek a gentle tap with her nose. "If you are able find a comfortable spot for yourself, we will see to it you are fixed up as well; at the very least fed and cared for till you are feeling well again. Your bravery is so inspiring.." Ikinya smiled deeply, her words sincere as she glanced over to the poor young lad. "I can't imagine why he would risk and brave such a storm like that..." Living so close to the coast she was well aware of the storms coming from out at sea; often so much more dangerous and violent than ones originating from beyond the mountains.

Either way, that was neither here or there for the time being, excusing herself from Awanata for now to trudge out of the water and onto the shore. Once they had set the strange stallion onto the beach she gave him a good look over; feeling her heart ache for his condition. Leaning her head down to rest her small ear on his chest, Ikinya frowned. "Sounds like he did breathe in some sea water.." The little mare said in concern, looking up to Cuauhcoatl.

Cuauhcoatl leaned down as well, listening carefully, "N-n-not a lot, thankfully -- hopefully once we g-get him over his b-borderline hyp-pothermia and awake he should be able to c-cough it out..."

The stallion frowned slightly, looking over the young stallion. While J-Dawg had been lost in thought about the fact this boy, just entering the cusp of adulthood, looked similar enough to him and his mate to possibly be another spirit child, Cuauhcoatl showed no sign of confused amazement, but instead worry for a young foal who was in the later part of his third year, not quite an adult but nearing puberty, and his injured rescuer. He wished Rayne had come with them, but she had stayed behind with a few others to finish work on a few things. However, her son Econlockhatchee had come with them with his father Wenopa to collect herbs. The two soquili had split off from the party earlier to go and start gathering some plants they had spotted in the distance that might go out of season in a few days. Catching a sound in the distance over the din of chatter as individuals gathered around Awanata and the unconscious soquili, and turned in hope that it was exactly who they needed.

User Image
From further down the beach and a little ways inland, three soquili run toward the scene. In the front leading the race was a pale blue stallion of Unicorn Descent, the little bells tangled around his horn alongside moon shaped charms chiming in a sweet quiet tone as he rushed toward the scene, head low. Following him a Cerynei stallion of a darker shade of blue with bright glowing antlers and hooves bounded after his son, bags over his shoulders and another bag hooked in his teeth, the woven collection bag full of the plants they had headed off to gather, gathered root side down and dripping in water from being cleaned off in one of the offshoots of the River delta, collected by the herbologists who had both had gone on ahead to start collecting plants to keep from getting in the way of the main organization and make sure they were in peak condition for drying and turning into medicines. Behind them, panting heavily from her exercises, was Pacha once again, having fled from the scene to collect the healers, unaware of how good or bad the situation was, flagging behind the much longer legged soquili and having run twice the distance they had .

-------

Econlockhatchee had been washing the herbs in the river when Pacha arrived in a tizzy, stammering and stuttering as she tried to explain what was going down. Once coaxed to slow down as she gasped for breath, it became clear that someone was injured and that a unicorn was needed. The pale, skyblue stallion left immediately toward the Beach, leaving his bag behind, running alongside Pacha so she could lead the way as fast as her little legs could let her as Wenopa quickly gathered up the missing supplies and took off after the pair, already a good distance away.

-------

Arriving first at the scene of gathered soquili, Econ panted slightly as he controlled his breaths, looking over the situation. He wasn't a pure blooded unicorn despite physical appearances, his unicorn heritage mixed with flutters and regular breeds for several generations and his father a pureblooded Cerynei. He trained the skill of his horn to the point of being usable with the help of the Angeni and his research, as well as little field trips to pure unicorns to learn along side their offspring, but he wasn't the strongest of healers and had to pick the most endangered, and was still learning to diagnose from the Angeni as he learned to identify plants and create medicines from his father, "How's he?"

User Image

"He spent t-too mu-much time in d-deep water so n-needs warmth, and has a little bu-bit of water in his lungs." Cuauhcoatl lifted his head, shifting back to his humanoid form to open the stallions eyes -- there was a reaction to the light, and the eyes were even, but he wasn't responsive beyond rolling his eyes in his head a little in a fitful form of sleep. Running his hands carefully over the body, he felt at joints and for any issues. The stallion was dressed in heavy golden jewels. His wings were frayed and broken, and his joints and muscles hot and swollen despite the chill that left him shivering, though it was already starting to ease from the warm sun, "A-and I'm p-pretty sure he w-was over s-stressed b-before he fell into the w-water, and he h-hit it hard."

He leaned back on his legs, the feather cape down his back of his human form that represented his wings brushing against his ankles, "He sh-should survive, but there's a p-possibility of internal injuries. Awan.. Awanata, do you m-mind if we address his injuries first?"

"of course" The Leatherback smiled slightly, flapping her flippers in the surf and pulling herself slightly higher up onto the shore, though keeping herself partially into the water as the air stung the scratches along her back, "My injuries are superficial, at most. This poor child is clearly in much more dire need than I am.

"T-Thank you." Cuauhcoatl turned his attention to the nervous sky blue unicorn, "If you please... I'll t-try to walk you through this."

User Image
Taking a deep breath, the Econ took a tentative step forward and lowered his head, gently touching his horn to the unconscious soquili. Closing his eyes, he began to focus. Under Cuauhcoatl's guidance, he focused only a faint part of his power, using that to probe the soquili for more dangerous injuries to prevent himself from wasting energy on the superficial, like the little bites on his neck, and instead probing deeper for little fractures and bleeding inside and pouring more energy in as he found them.. Econ's shoulders relaxed slightly as he sensed what little internal bleeding there was and little cracks in bone mend, realizing that the stallion wasn't as bad off as he appeared. He was sapped of heat, exhausted, bruised and some of his muscles were strained, but nothing was life threatening, though the injuries he healed with his horn could have bloomed into something worse.

Finally the little bite wounds on the stallions neck stitched close and Econ pulled away -- he could keep his bruising and overstrained muscles now that his tendons were reattached to bone and little tears and breaks were healed, and the little ruptures in his body healed over. The healer drooped slightly, letting out a slow breath, "Gimme a couple to recoop and I can deal with..... Awanata's.. Wounds. Right now we jus' gotta let this guy warm up and rest. Could someone heat up some water so I can make'm some tea?"
