Calypso wasn't in the mood for adventure today but she came along anyway since Calliste had insisted....and insisted....and insisted. She wasn't taking no for an answer.
She swam along behind her pink twin sister, a bit of a frown across her face. "You know," she paused, "I reeeeeaaallly didn't want to come today. I would have been happy staying at home with mama and papa. What is it that you can't wait to show me?" Her soft voice floated through the water to her sister's ears.

Calliste swam along happily, swimming in and out of rays of sunlight, her tail swishing this way and that. "Nope, nope, nope! Not gonna tell ya til we get there. Remember, we're 'splorin'. It's a secret." She giggled happily and swam in an overhead circle around her sister. "Come on, grumpy gills, it'll be fun!" She exclaimed excitedly as she swam ahead again, leaving her sister to follow a trail of bubbles.

Irridian swiveled his ears as he considered his surroundings, grinning as a school of colorful fish darted past him. The waters here were pleasant and seemed notably lacking in danger, a welcome change of pace from what he was used to. He and his brothers had come to these waters in search of different things, and while Irridian was not exactly 'looking' for adventure, they had certainly found it on the journey. He wasn't entirely sure what the other three would think of this place, but it seemed like it could be home...

With everything that lay behind them, and only the welcoming waters of 'here' filling his present, Irri silently decided he would stay in this place... Even if his brothers elected to go onward. He wasn't one for great adventures, he would happily leave that up to them. And while he was somewhat quiet to start, there seemed many Mer here to make friends with, so that was more than enough!

The soft sound of giggles made him turn, darting upward from his meandering swim near the ocean floor. That sounded like foals to him, which just proved his earlier assumption about the peace of the area...

"Who lets foals skip about without a parent?" He murmured, searching for the source of the noise.

She swam faster, trying to catch up to her twin. "Iste (pronounced Iss-tay), slow down," she protested, dodging her head side to side to miss the trail of bubbles. "You know I can't keep up with you." Irritation showed on her face as she followed along after the pink and orange tail fin flittering in front of her. Her little fishy friends swam along with her, keeping her company, even if her sister left her in her bubbles.
Since they had emerged from their shells, this had been their home. Most days Calypso spent her time within the herd, admiring the trinkets and dodads that the older mers had collected. She had started a small collection of her own, most of which she had found on excursions with Calliste. They were both collectors of odd and shiny things, but Calypso admired the more extravagant pieces.

Calliste peeked over her shoulder to see where Calypso was; to make sure she was still following. Sometimes she would have to turn around and go back to drag her little sister with her. She considered herself to be the older sister, since she emerged from her shell sooner than Calypso.
"Come oh-nn," she called back. "Don't be so slow Caly (pronounced Cal-e). I bet I could swim circles around you and still make it there first." And, she very well could. Calypso was a great swimmer for her age, beating even some of the older mers and seathies in short distance races. Her excitement lay in many areas. She loved to swim, go on adventures, and pretend fight with some of the young seathies of the herd. They called it training, but she just called it fun.
Up ahead was the small cave Calliste was wanting to show Calypso. She was sure they could find some interesting stuff in there. As she looked back once more to see where Calypso was, she bumped into something solid and let out an audible "ooomph" as her swim came to an abrupt stop. Turning quickly to see what she had swam into, she came nose to tail with a large white male mer. "OH! Sorry sir," she said, backpedalling away from him, "I didn't see you there just a second ago. I was too excited and looked back for my sister and just ran smack into you."

The sound of sibling discussion were somewhat familiar, even if the voices were a little higher pitched than those in his memories. For the moment he was swept up in his nostalgia, missing the time he was surrounded by his brothers... For the moment they had scattered upon entering new waters, though he was sure sooner or later they would cross paths again. But in the moment, listening to the foals frolic, he missed them terribly.
Another chorus of soft giggles, and Irridian was abruptly in the present, ears swiveling. Fillies then, Irridian guessed, though they were not yet in sight. With a curious huff that resulted in a trail of bubbles, Irridian flicked his tail and sped up and around another rocky outcropping.

He smiled at the sight of the two fillies, their colors bold compared to his own soft white and blue shades. The pink one reminded him of one of his brothers, but much more electric in hue. He stifled the urge to laugh and settled for a stream of tiny bubbles in amusement when she barreled right into him.

"No trouble, no trouble at all." He reassured her gently. "Where I come from it is the gentleman's fault for running into a lady. So then, I offer my most sincere apologies. Are you alright, My Lady?

Calypso's eyes widened in terror as she saw her sister swim right into the big mer behind her. "Iste!" She sped up, as fast as her little tail would let her go and when she reached the others, all she heard was her sister laughing.
As she saw that Calliste was ok, she sort of floated away from the male and ended up behind her sister, peeking over her shoulder at him.

She giggled at him, "You talk funny." She swam in place, and looked over her shoulder at her sister. "I was watching for you and swam right into this guy," she told Calypso. "I'm alright though, so it's no big deal," she said, answering his question.

"We were on our way to a cool new cave I found. I wanted to show Caly." she smiled, proud of her findings. "What are YOU doing mister?"

Irridian was just a moment too late the warn the fillies of their current collision course, and regretted any fear that may arise due to the accident. Without thinking he blew a playful trail of bubbles and grinned at the laughing filly, nodding his head to her shy sister when he noted the darker foal watching him.

"Do I now, My Lady?" He pretended to be surprised, ears swiveling forward in back and eyes playfully wide. Then again, the idea that his words were odd to her was no surprise at all, considering how far he had swam to arrive in this new place. Home was many, many leagues behind him now. "Well now, what e'er shall we do about that? I certainly would not want such lovely ladies to not understand me when I talk to them."

He glanced around to make sure there was no protective parent or threatening predator in sight, then fluttered his fins and gave them a nod. "A proper adventure, by the sound of things, and I wish you well in your endeavor."

He huffed another trail of bubbles, soundless laughter, at the question. "I? Well that's a fair question, a very fair question indeed. I am new to these waters, and have just arrived from a far off sea, in the company of my three brothers."

He gave a faint nod, the movement tossing his mane this way and that. "And though they're not with me at the moment, I think they and I will be staying in this lovely new place... Though we've not seen enough to be sure as of yet. So then, I volunteered to be the advance guard, and swim about to get a better idea of this new place."

He tilted his head in question. "Do I pass inspection, Miss?"

Her inner voice was sometimes louder than her outer voice. 'Calliste....I don't really like this guy....we don't know him.....we shouldn't trust a stranger.....WHAT! Don't tell this guy about the new cave....aghhh....Iste....what are you doing?.....let's go Iste......come on, let's just go......." Her eyes were wide and focused on the strange stallion, watching him. She listened intently to his conversation. 'There were two others with him? Oh no.'

"Iste," she whispered, "come on...." Even though she wasn't too eager to get to the cave, she was more eager to get away from this stranger. She nudged up against Calypso, swishing her tail and fins anxiously.

"No no, I like the way you talk, it's so different." She smiled, swishing her tail back and forth to keep herself in place. "I haven't heard anyone talk like you before. And you have brothers here too? Wow, that's awesome. I love having my sister with me all the time so that's gotta be great having three brothers to do stuff with."

Calliste noticed that Calypso had been really quiet. She knew that Caly was shy around other people, so she didn't want her to be uncomfortable. When she whispered that she wanted to go, Iste whispered back. "It's okay Caly. Just a minute okay? We'll go in a minute."

She turned her focus back to the stallion. "Don't mind her, she's just really shy around new Soq. Do you mean you'll be staying in the herd? With the pirates? That's really cool. Our parents are part of the pirate herd. Well...not our real parents. The whole herd took care of us and we've grown up here. It's a really nice place."

She thought about his question. "Inspection? What inspection?" she giggled.

It didn't take much to figure out that the darker of the two fillies, hovering just behind her sister, did not trust him in the slightest. Which was regrettable, as it had been a long time since he had the chance to visit with foals. To be honest Irri loved spending time with the foals back home, and he truly missed their exuberant and playful natures.

Irridian was aware of Calypso's distrustful regard even as he talked and entertained Calliste. He glanced at her now and again, trying to show that he was friendly without scaring her by paying too much attention. It was a delicate balance, but he managed the best that he could. Calliste's amusement in the way he talked made him grin, making him think fondly of the foals back home for a moment.

"Do you now? Well, I thank you most sincerely, oh lovely lady." He blew another stream of bubbles in amusement, smiling at 'Iste'. "Aye, my three brothers and I have come from quite far off. We weren't really headed to any specific place, but the best adventures start that way, I have found. Since we are from so far away, I'll wager not many here have heard someone who talks about us."

Flaring his fins and flicking his tail to stay in place, he risked another glance at Calypso. "They are off exploring on their own, somewhere behind me, I imagine. It was my task to swim ahead and make sure if there were any sharks, I could warn them before getting eaten."

He huffed a laugh, shaking his head ruefully before his ears swiveled forward at the mention of the herd. "I've not crossed paths of any pirates as of late, so I cannot say that I am staying with them. Though one of my brothers will surely be interested to know they are here."

Irridian wasn't sure all of them would join the herd, since four new stallions would be quite an addition, but perhaps one or two would elect to stay once they had been properly introduced. "I am glad to see they are friendly and have taken care of you, if your parents could not... As far as if I shall stay, I cannot say. That would be at the whim of the pirates, and depend on several factors besides."

"Your inspection of me, of course." He glanced at Caly, then back. "I would hate to keep you lovely ladies away from your adventure, so long as you are careful."

He couldn't help the gentle warning. Foals were precious and to be protected, and even if they were not part of his herd, they were friends of a sort now... He wanted them to be careful.

Every time the stallion looked her way, she would duck lower behind Calliste so that she was hidden from sight. It almost became a game of sorts, kind of like peek-a-boo. She wasn't playing it intentionally, but once she realized that's what it appeared to be, she smiled ever so slightly. She watched the bubbles float upwards and smiled again. Her wariness of the stallion was slowly dwindling, but she still remained behind her sister....just in case.

Calliste watched him intently, listening to him talk about his brothers. "Sharks? I haven't seen any sharks around, though I think the protectors keep them scared off from around here. That's one of the great things about this place. Everyone has a duty. Well, almost everyone. We aren't old enough to have a duty yet, but I want to be a collector when I'm older. I'm pretty good at it now." She looked back at Caly. "Right Caly? We both collect lots of little things on our adventures." She paused and thought a moment, turning back to Irridian. "You could come with us if you want. That way, we wouldn't be alone, and you could get to know the area a little more." Caly wouldn't like that she invited him, but Iste didn't see him as a threat. It was easier for her to make friends than it was for Caly.

Her eyes widened with shock when Iste invited this stranger to go with them. 'What!? No!' she shouted in her head. She bumped her front hoof against Iste's shoulder in protest. 'We don't even know his name and you want to invite him to come with us?' She sighed out loud, but kept her mouth closed. 'Sometimes I really wish you could hear me think Iste....'

Irri eventually became aware of the fact that he and the darker of the two fillies seemed to be playing a peculiar game of 'I see you'. Every time he glanced her way, she hid, but as soon as he turned away she was peering at him. He wondered if it meant she was starting to relax a little bit, and hoped it was so.

He dared another glance at her and blew a stream of bubbles her way, chuckling softly to himself. It was a shame his brothers were missing out on these two entertaining little ladies... But Irridian had a weakness for foals that not all the others shared. He was content to while away the day in the fillies company, then at least he could be sure they were safe.

"Aye." He said seriously when she echoed the word. "Nasty things, those. Great swimming shadows with sharp teeth. I care for them not at all, myself."

He made a 'chompchomp' sort of gesture with his teeth to Calliste, then grinned. It was good to hear that the herd kept these waters safe for the foals, made him worry a (little) less about their wandering. He still wasn't thrilled, but that was because these two were far too endearing to come to harm.

"A duty for the herd, hmm?" He echoed, curiosity making his ears spin forward. "A collector? A most noble task, and you do seem like you would be. Far more clever than other foals I have known, and adventurous no doubt."

He blew a short stream of bubbles, grateful she had invited him, but worried his presence would further alarm her dark sister. "Now I would be most flattered to serve as the companion for two lovely ladies... But I would not wish to intrude. Are you sure both of you do not mind my company for awhile longer? I could certainly use a guide in these strange waters..."

He gave Calypso a somewhat soulful look, silently waiting for her to refuse his company.
