He had been thinking about this for a while. Never had Elliot thought that he would resort to having such thoughts, but after what had happened...what choice did he have? Those insatiable flames had taken almost everything from them--they were just lucky that they still had a house to live in.

But for how long? Elliot knew he had to do his part to help his parents, and now this was the only way he could think of. After a long morning of unsuccessful job hunting in town, the boy had sacrificed what money he could now bare to spend to rent a horse from a family friend so that he could ride down to Kody's.

He needed to talk, and his friend seemed like the best choice right now. That, and she was likely the only one he knew who would be able to answer his questions right now. As he rode up to her home, he scanned the surrounding fields in search of the vibrant blue hair of the chipper girl.

It had taken her mother a whole two weeks before she allowed Kody back into the farmhouse. THe news of her joining the military hit her hard, enough to ban her own daughter from the house. It was only by gentle persuasion of her father that allowed her back into the home, but only for short bursts of time.

Kody had to get her stubbornness from somewhere.

She was out in the fields today, but she wasn't working. Instead she was idly grooming the family horse with a bristle brush. Gently she stroked his side, the horse idly eating at some hay she coaxed him outside with. It was a beautiful day, so why hide in the barn?

Turning around she noticed someone approaching their house. Now, Kody was used to visitors. They got quite a few on average, usually to talk to her parents about a cut of the crops. This particular visitor though was a surprise. She had to blink a few times to make sure she wasn't seeing things, he was still in the sunlight which blotted her vision. Patting the horse a few times on his side, Kody left him behind to his hay as she leapt over the wall of the fenced enclosure. He would have seen her approaching, usual smile on her face. "Well isn't this a surprise?" She grinned, patting her hands on her sides to remove some of the dirt that came off the fence. "Don't normally see you here unless I'm the one bringing you." Aka: Dragging him more than likely.

"Here to see me or business today?"

Ah, there she was. Despite himself, the corners of the boy's lips turned upwards ever so slightly upon seeing his friend, but the smile disappeared as soon as Kody asked her question. There was a beat of pause, and then he shifted uncomfortably before sliding off of his borrowed horse. Considering how he was going to say this, Elliot slowly shrugged his shoulders.

"Uh. A little of both, I suppose," He admitted quietly, his voice careful, "Are you busy right now? I'd like to talk in private, if that's alright with you." Granted that they were technically already in private--sans the company of the horses--but it made him feel a little anxious standing out in the open like this.

"I have a few questions," Elliot added quickly, as if to assure her that she hadn't done anything wrong. "Things came up, so...yeah."

Warning bells should have sounded off in her mind at his tone shift. But they didn't, instead she was happy to see her friend out at the farm, it was a rare treat! "Oh, Sure of course. Did you want this fine horse to wait in the pasture with the others?" She of course pointed towards the fenced area she had just leapt over. As if on cue, the family horse looked up and stared directly at the trio, still chewing on some feed.

Glass always half full in her mind, she reached out and pulled Elliot into a hug before quickly releasing him. "We can go on a walk?" That would be the best time to be alone really. He family had a nack for looking in the shaded spots for her when she was needed. Without being prompted to she grabbed the reins of the horse, patting the sides of its face briefly, before pulling it towards the gates. "Whats on your mind?"

"Hm? Oh, uh. Yeah, please--I'd appreciate it." He moved to hand the reins over, but Kody was already one step ahead of him. Allowing her lead the horse, he stuffed his now-free hands into his pockets, brows creasing as he moved to walk alongside her.

"There's...a lot on my mind," Elliot said with a short, nervous laugh, clearly stalling, "I mean, uh..." Under any other circumstance (and if it weren't Elliot), this would sound like the beginnings of a romantic confession. Too bad it wasn't quite as light-hearted as that, though.

Alright, just blurt it out. "The military. Do you know how much soldiers are paid?"

Closing the door to the pasture she watched as the one horse joined the other. She turned around next, and being as Ells seemed distracted, she continued to guide him down a deserted pathway through the fields.

Unfortunately for Elliot thought, she was starting to take it just that way.

She was just about to open her mouth, replying to how awkward he was acting, when the true reason he was acting this way emerged. "Oh thank some lord, for a second there i thought you were confessin' love or something." She breathed out with a small laugh, shaking her head. While she did like Elliot, as it was she didnt like him like that.

"UHhhmmmm... After i passed the tests they rattled off a number. Being as im entry level its certainly not as much as i assume the more seasoned military gets." She rattled off the number next though, just so Elliot had an idea. "Why Ells? Curious?"

Well that broke a bit of the tension. "What? I--no Kody, I am not confessing to you." Lifting a hand, he playfully ruffled her hair, "And I'm sorry if you're disappointed--"--she wasn't, he knew--"But that's a fact."

As he dropped his hand, so too did his growing smile disappear. Taking in the girl's information carefully, he let out a quiet breath. Well...that wasn't a bad sum, to say the least. It was definitely a lot more than working small, odd jobs around the town, and with him gone, his parents would only have two--three, if you counted the cat--mouths to feed. The only issue was that he didn't really think he was military material.

Deciding that he owed his friend an explanation, Elliot's lips twisted into a pained grimace. "The store went up in flames last night, and obviously all our stock went with it." Flowers, unfortunately, were delicate things. "No one knows what happened--we suspect that some kids might have been horsing around--but the fact of the matter is that we're suddenly really, really scrambling for money."

"Whos disappointed?" Even if HE knew, she needed to emphasize it anyways. Batting away his hand with her own, she huffed.

Her (feigned) annoyance didn't have a long shelf life, because all too soon it shifted entirely. Her eyes grew wide, her pupils dilating, as a look of horror appeared and replaced the other. "No, not the store." She whispered. She knew how much that store meant to him and his parents. Even though Elliot complained about it, it was their livelihood. It was how they survived to live another day. Before kody realized it, she had snaked her arms around her friend and held him close. Ells was more than likely hiding his sorrow inside and thinking practical thoughts. She had known him way too long to not know that somewhere inside, he was hurting. Her hug was a attempt to let him know if he needed to grieve, she would be there like a friend should be.

She also now understood what he was saying, why he was asking. "You're thinking about joining aren't you?" Normally, Kody would have been overjoyed for the news. She would have said how much they would train together, work together like friends should. But this... this felt like his hand was forced. "Not...saying you cant handle it, Ells, just that." She paused. How to say this without sounding like an a**... She glanced up at him for a second, before looking away. "You dont seem the type for the military."

And this is why Elliot had come to talk to Kody--because she knew, because she understood. Ever since the fire, Elliot's only thoughts had been on earning money and lessening the burden on his parents. With his mother so incredibly distressed, he hadn't had much time to grieve himself.

And his friend knew that, that much was clear. Sagging in her arms, the taller boy rest his head in her shoulder, something akin to a weak laugh escaping his lips. "No, Kody, that's the thing--I'm not suited for the military. I'm not used to physical labour--you of all people know that best--nor am I the kind of person who can just...sign themselves away to something." He didn't want to fight titans, or guard the walls, or serve the King. The last one especially--when had he even done anything for the common people?

"But it's money. More money than I could make in a year of doing odd jobs around town. More than enough money to ensure that mom and dad can continue living as they have been for the past few years." And...well, they had always wanted him to do something with his life, right? This was definitely something...

Though he knew even now that they wouldn't approve of it. Not when there was a chance that they'd lose their only son.

Unsure what to do, or what to say for that matter, she instead listened to him silently while he spoke. When he slumped into her arms she held on tight, rubbing his back to attempt to comfort him even slightly. She really did not know what he was going through, so she couldn't relate. If her family lost the farm...

Patting his back lightly she only spoke up once she was sure he was finished. "No, Ells. I know you can do it. It might be hard and rough but, if you put your mind to it I'm sure you will succeed." It was no brainer who of the two was smarter. Ells read more than she did, a LOT more. She was small, quick, and strong... but Elliot was Tall, Fast, and Brainy.

Even if he was a little lazy...

"Besides, I'll be there to help you along!" Wether this was a good or a bad thing was left to be decided. She was certain he would help her too, thats what friends were for. "We will train you to be the best." To make his family proud. She understood the paycheck thing for her family too. She was tossing half of everything she made into the bank too. Only her eldest two brothers knew about it, and were on the account, in case her family got hit hard or something or another they would have a little to fall back on. She didn't dare tell her parents, they were far too stubborn...

The irony here was that, for a long while, Elliot had actually hated that flower shop--or at least, hated working in it. He had spent many a bored hour behind the counter of that store, wishing that it didn't exist so that he could be elsewhere...but not for real. Not like this. As stupid as he thought it was for his family to make a livelihood off of flowers and other plants, that fact of the matter was that that business had been what had been keeping them off the streets and in a decent financial state.

And his parents were old. Maybe not that old, but old enough that Elliot didn't want them to have to go off and find hard labour to break their backs over. No, he would be the one to carry them this time.

The corners of his lips twitched upwards ever so slightly at Kody's optimistic encouragement. How very like her. He didn't quite have the words to express how much he appreciated her positivity, especially when he himself had none. "At this point, whether I can or can't isn't even a factor anymore I guess. I don't have a choice."

He drew himself back and a little ways out of her arms, staring at his friend quietly for a moment before he suddenly let out a short laugh. "Well...I guess I should appreciate the fact that I can keep you out of trouble." Granted that it was usually him doing all the troublemaking in the first place.
