I headed out to Soudul to catch some Arboas along the coast. I couldn’t wait to make my new backpack. I dislike having to focus on magic when I could simply be swimming and looking for food. As I already had to carry some stuff around, I left my brother’s lair with extra food stuff so that I didn’t have to hunt as much on the swim across the ocean back to Soudul. Hopefully this would cut down a bit on the transit time, even if I did have to carry a bigger pack and secure it with magic. To get myself use to the feeling of something on my back, I used my water magic to hold have the ocean water hold the pack between my wings, just below my neck. Not what I’m used to, but not uncomfortable. Since I wanted to get my new item as quickly as possible, I swam in the empty zone a couple of meters below the surface of the ocean to avoid any of the stronger sea creatures and Peisio dragons. I made good time on the way back. I slept in the strong currents and happened across a couple of fish schools which provided a good size feeding for me. I still ended up eating all the food from my brothers before I reached Soudul though. Oh well, it’s the price of being big.
I reached Soudul as night was falling and was quite tired from the fast pace I had set. I settled down for the night in a cave partially filled with water. Hopefully my rest won’t be disturbed. Fortunately it wasn’t, but I was woken halfway through the night by my own stomach. I went out to hunt for edible creatures and spotted some off a little bit inland, eating under the trees. After I had caught them and filled my stomach, I decided to go looking for some Arboa. Maybe the dark spotted ones would come out at night? I didn’t really know, I’m not an animal specialist, but it might be possible on Soudul, land of dark plants and people.
So I went looking for a lake. In a lake, it would be harder for the Arboa to escape and easier for me to use my magic so I didn’t get poisoned or paralyzed while killing them. I launched myself into the air and surveyed the land from above, looking for a break in the dark landscape below. A glimmer of moonling further inland indicated a small lake. I flew over there, skimming the trees and settling down on the edge of a medium size lake.
I settled down in the shallow part of the lake and waited for the lake to regain its calm after my disturbance. I lay with most of my body submerged to better sense movement in the water and laid my neck so that I could still breathe the air while being mostly submerged. When I sensed movement in the water starting up again, I still waited. Patience would get me the Arboa this time. As the moon sank lower in the sky the lake’s inhabitants swam closer and closer. I waited, unmoving as I waited for an Arboa to move within sight. Finally an Arboa swam along the floor within view. I waited for it to get closer to see if it was the colors that I wanted. It was, the spots were a vivid blue color, good. Without moving a muscle, I concentrated on manipulating the water to “pick” the Arboa up and toss it onto land where it couldn’t breathe. It worked perfectly. I even managed to land the Arboa close to where I placed my pack among rocks. I watched it, only turning my head to disturb the water as little as possible. It trashed about on land for a couple of minutes before finally it died, the vividness of the blue spots fading. Satisfied that it would not be moving, I moved my head back into the water to look for more. Unfortunately, while I was watching the dying one on land, a different one had gotten too close to me. I moved my head into the water and spotted it immediately. It was right next to my tail. That was not good at all. My head movement had startled it and it was going to touch my tail. I jumped out of the water quickly before it could touch and paralyze me. I might not get paralyzed but I wasn't going to risk it.
Drat, now this lake would be a terrible hunting ground since I just disturbed it again. Oh well, I’ll go find another lake and repeat again after I get something to eat. Being forced to sit still for such a long time without eating has made me hungry again. I wrapped some plant leaves around the body and added it to my pack. Looking at the body and pack in comparison, I’m going to need at least one more Arboa to make a pack big enough. I launched myself into the air to look for more lakes. Looking to the north, I spotted several lakes close to each other. Good, I can swap lakes if one doesn’t work out. Settling back down I moved into the trees, headed for the lakes. I would walk to the lakes and eat whatever passed near me so that I could quiet my stomach. Hunting silently is impossible if I’m hungry, my stomach makes too much noise. I did in fact manage to get some meat on the way there so I was in good shape for some more Arboa hunting.
Looking at the small interlocking lakes, I decided to start at the southernmost edge and simply drive all the creatures to the northern edge. Maybe it might work, and if it doesn’t I would get some more meat out of it. I plunged into the shallow lake and thrashed my tail and wings, making a huge disturbance in the water. The local critters fled, I walked towards the other side. Hmmm, this lake is much too shallow for Arboa to live in. Good, I get to eat then. As the little fishes jumped around in the cage I had made of my wings and water magic, I feasted on them. Right up until I came face to face with two Arboas. One had bright green spots and the other had bright yellow spots. Ack! I jumped back jerking my nose backward to avoid touching either of them. My flapped my wings and clumsily landed on the shore. That certainly didn’t turn out like I wanted it too. Hmmm, and both of those colors were much too bright. Oh well, there are three other lakes to go looking in.
I shock myself over and picked up my pack and replaced it near the next lake. This lake was deeper than the other so I could actually submerge myself so I decided to repeat the first attempt at catching Arboa. I settled on top of a rock that was barely out of the water and only stuck my head in. This probably looked really stupid but was safer than having one accidently touch me. I dislike poison. It makes hunting troublesome. So I waited and waited. The moon went below the horizon and still I didn’t spot any Arboa. As the sky lightened in the east I spotted movement in the deepest part of the lake. Hoping that it was Arboa, I slowly moved my head closer. The movement was actually two of them. I waited longer. I wanted another blue spotted one. The sky got brighter but they didn’t come closer. This was going to work then. Oh well, I’ll just have to hope for the best.
I reached out with my magic and attempted to grab both of them with a bubble of water. It worked mostly. The two Arboas went into a thrashing frenzy as I used magic to move the water bubble towards the shore. It was a struggle to maintain the concentration to both maintain the bubble while moving it up out of water. There were too many rocks in this lake, so I decided to magic the bubble out of the water and move it through the air above the rocks to the shore near my pack. I managed it finally as the sun crested the horizon. The brightness made me flinch as a beam of light lanced my eyes. I lost my concentration for just a moment and the bubble broke. Squinting through the light, I focused on one of the dark shapes that were falling toward the ground. I grabbed water with my magic and blasted it towards the shape, hitting it square on and making it fall on the shore rather than back into the lake. Good, now my pack will look nice as well as be functional. It had been a long night and I didn’t feel like hunting for any more Arboa. I stretched my wings, wrapped up the newest corpse and decided to go sleep. I looked around for a nice shady spot and found one. It was on a rock under a huge tree with branches and leaves forming a curtain around it.
I settled onto it and laid out the bodies of the Arboa. I grabbed water with my magic and using a branch, did my best to scrub the slimy poison off of the skin. After doing the best I could scrubbing the coating off, I decided to cut the body in two. I made two halves, one of the back the other of the belly. Using my claw, I slit the skin in a huge circle. I opened up the body and eat the insides, waste not want not after all. Liking the inside clean I examined the skin and decided to keep it as “fresh” as possible. I used magic to make a bubble of clean water and stored them in it.
It was mid-morning and I was tired. I had spent half the night hunting and using magic. The snack I had should allow me to get a couple hours of sleep before I am really hungry again. Stretching my wings out, I looked out through the covering branches to see if any creature had come. Seeing only prey and no predators, I curled up and slept until midafternoon when I woke up to go hunting for Magbits, I needed their fluff to cushion the inside of my new pack, and they should make a nice snack as well.
