Fayths stick together. His mother had told him as a foal. It was something that remained in his memory, urging him to form strong bonds to his siblings and to hold great affection for his cousin on the rare chances they were able to visit. They were close as foals, affectionate and supportive as adults. It was a simple idea, but one that helped forge the tight bond of family Kelakohr treasured over many other things in his life. The destruction of his home and desperate nature of their flight lent itself to chaos... And in that chaos the family was divided and scattered.
Fayths stick together. Even after all his travels, the words rang in his mind... A reminder he would one day have to find his family, or at least confirm that they were no longer on this plane. So then, after finding a new homeland and establishing themselves in the area, he had agreed to journey with his mother in search of his lost siblings. His father had chosen another path, hoping they would make better progress by covering more ground.
The travels in search of his brothers and sisters had taken considerably longer than Kelakohr expected. While that in itself was frustrating, what was even more-so was the fact that he and his parents were no closer to finding them. Combining that with the fact that he had left Amiera alone for far longer than he was comfortable, the Fayth's Mystery felt frustration and anger building in his chest. It was not a particularly flattering combination, and must of have showed on his face because it drew the attention of his mother.
Then again, Whistle had always been exceptional at reading the minds and moods of her children... And there was no reason for that particular talent to desert her now. No matter how much Kelakohr wished that it would.

Whistle was proud of her children, as she believed every mother should be. Encouraged their unique gifts and interests, reveled in their triumphs and shared their sorrows. She tried to be both a mother and a friend, a confidant for her daughters and an adviser to her sons. She allowed them to be who they were -all of them, even Aveshar- and always had.
But there were times it was difficult to stand back and watch them charge at cliffs... Times she refused to let them set themselves up for heartache when they could easily avoid it. So she had agreed to her son accompanying her on this journey only when it seemed that his Lady Love would be safe... And even though things had gotten out of control and the trip far-extended beyond their imagining, she was not too worried about the outcome.
She was, however, slightly concerned at Kelakohr's silent brooding. So when she had decided she could tolerate no more of it, she danced to his side and shouldered him playfully. "You sulk so loudly you will give your poor mother a headache... Tell me what troubles you, my handsome son?"

Startled out of his musings by the physical nudge, he glanced to the side and waited. When the words came Kel laughed in spite of himself, and guessed that was his mother's intent when she ducked her head with a faint smile. Shaking his head he shouldered her back, but gently, as she was all dainty grace beside his war-tested bulk. They were more alike than he and his father, in color if nothing else... But he did favor Ballad in height, and it made him cautious when jostling her or his sisters.
"I will sulk quieter, because my mother is very dear to me." He promised with mock solemnity. "I would hate to cause her any pain."

They strode along in silence for a moment or two before Whistle hummed, nodding faintly. "That is most considerate of you... But perhaps we would all be better served if you simply shared what was troubling you? Your mother is quite wise, she may be able to alleviate some of your worry."
The woods they strode through were strange, filled with oddly tall trees and strange cone-like seeds. Whistle scuffed a few out of her way with the flick of a hoof, watching them tumble over the densely carpeted forest floor. Green needles that released a strong scent when trampled, and brown ones crunched and crackled with their steps. She nudged him again, smiling gently. "I would wager that it has something to do with the lovely thing you have left behind, and who could blame you? I miss her too, and I love her like a daughter."

"It is well-known that a mother's love is a most formiddable thing." Kelakohr remarked with a smile. "As your son, I cannot find it in me to trivialize it... But I am sure you understand regardless, you have spent just as much time separated from father."
He sighed and glanced to the woods, tracking the take-off of a crow. The flutter of wings reminded him of his brother, and once again he found himself longing for success on this journey even as it seemed hopeless. They had no way of knowing if his siblings had survived, or where they would have scattered in the wake of such disaster. And there was no hope to return to, so how could they possibly find a place to meet? Even worse, if they were searching while he and his parents were searching, what were the chances they were all moving in circles and just barely missing each other?

Somewhat surprised at the smooth, diplomatic answer Whistle laughed. Shaking her head she let the forest echo with her amusement for a few moments. "Oh, that was well said! Well-played indeed."
She ignored the sudden sound of rabbits startling nearly underfoot, ducking easily under a low-hanging branch that partially obscured their path. "You know good and well how deeply I love you, and I know you would not question that. Still, the love of a mother, or an adopted daughter, differs from the love of a mate. I am sorry to drag you so far away from her, but you know we will turn back soon and you two will be together..."
Together, like she and Ballad were.. Like, so small of a fraction of their family were...

"I am so glad I am able to amuse you." Kel teased back. "I am sure Cas would have far more fun in this discussion than I am... And heavens know any of my sisters are better at snappy retorts..."
And he missed them, fiercely, as he considered it. But that was why they were searching, out here and all around, constantly asking if anyone had seen them... Because one day they would have news, or his siblings would meet someone he had already talked to... and maybe, just maybe, they'd find their way back to their waiting family. He hoped so, for his mother's sake.
"I know, and you know I love you." He agreed, nosing her gently. "And I am glad, beyond words, that Amiera now has you.. Because it is a terribly feeling to be alone in this world, to no longer have your parents. And now she has us, which is why I worry now that we have gone. But I understand the importance of this too, which is why I could not let you and father search alone."

"You do well enough, and soon I hope we will find them so I can sit in the background and watch you all bicker." Whistle smiled. "It will do my heart much good to listen to sibling rivalry that is not edged with murderous intent... In that aspect, Aveshar is quite useless."
She could see sorrow settle over Kelakohr's face once more, and let several moments pass in silence. While Whistle herself did not know what it was like to grow up with siblings, she imagines their sudden loss would leave quite an impression... A gaping hole where there had been playful taunts and laughter. A hollow space where once one's sibling stood. Kel was dealing with that now, and it was not unlike her grief at the loss of her children.
"We will find them." She murmured at last. "Even if it not this time, and we must go home to your Lady and apologize for our long absence... We'll find them one day."

"I knew you wanted to torture me." Kelakohr jested with a smile. "Perhape then Aveshar does come by it honestly?"
He snorted and shook himself from nose to tail, trying to shake off the melancholy and the worry that edged in along with it. It was hard to stay upbeat after so long without news. Surely someone should have heard soemthing by now? Even with so many of their friends lost, he had expected that someone could tell him his siblings were well... Could bring him news that Cas's bold mirth was brightening someone's day, or Suni's gentle heart was comforting those who had lost loved ones in the disaster.
"I know we will." He admitted gently. "If not this time, the next. I know we won't stop looking, and one day we'll find them... But for the moment, if we don't hurry, we'll be late to meet father... And then we'll both be in trouble."

* Ballad found himself restless as he waited for the arrival for his mate and their son. True enough he need not worry, Kelakohr was capable of defending himself and healing his mother should any harm befall them... But the last time Ballad had been separated from his mate, their homeland had been torn apart, their children all lost, and Whistle was injured and left to wander with no recollection of her past.
Needless to say, without his mate beside him, Ballad got a little tense.
Still, they had agreed that more ground could be covered if they split up... So Kel and his mother had gone one way, and Ballad another... It was understood they would meet in this glade by the new moon, but so far there was no sign of them. Ballad flicked his tail and paced the glade, pausing to paw restlessly at the ground from time to time. He knew they would be here... They promised. *

"Oh bite your tongue!" Whistle laughed, drifting on her hooves to shoulder her son with a grumble of disapproval. He didn't shift under the brush of her weight, but the way he towered over her meant it wasn't so surprising. "I'm sure I have not made your life half so difficult as he had."
She pretended to consider, giving him a playful look with narrowed eyes. "Which is not to say that I couldn't if I wanted to... I simply haven't."
She nodded firmly as though he should consider himself warned, then relaxed with another soft smile at him. His worry for his family was well-understood, and one of the trait she was so proud to see in him. She and her mate were proud of their close-knit family and couldn't stand the thought of losing their eldest children... It helped to think of them out there, somewhere, striving to find their way back. She had raised good, strong children. She had faith in them.
"Yes, we will." Whistle nodded. "Because no matter what happens, we always seem to find our way back to each other."
She sighed, glancing skyward and then picking up her pace. "And you are correct in that as well. We had better get moving, I think your father has had all the worry he can take for one lifetime."

"Yes mother, forgive me mother." Kelakohr murmured, shrinking away from the bump as though she had scared him or pushed him off-course. He couldn't quite stop the smile, but it didn't much matter with his mother's laughter ringing through the air. "And that is true, but that is only because I have lived in fear of you my entire life. Father did not have to be strict."
He laughed at her comment, shaking his head. "Of course you have not, Mother... What was I thinking, to antagonize you?"
He drifted back and nosed her affectionately when she had dropped the stern act. There were times he could see the worry drift through her eyes, but at the moment she seemed to be somewhat peaceful. He knew they would never stop fighting to build a home, to find what they had lost and recover what memories they could. But at the same time his mother would not cling to the past, she understood that there was enough to worry about in the future.
"We do at that." He agreed with a soft smile, grateful how that same trait seemed to bring him back to his lady-love, no matter how he may have drifted. "I will agree, we do at that."
He chuckled softly, echoing her skyward glance with a nervous flick of his ear. He could almost sense a distant storm, the hum on his skin bespoke of lightning to come. There was also the faintest scent of rain on the air. "Hopefully we can get to him before the storm, then."

It was comical to see her tall, strapping son pretending to cower away from her in fear. He towered over her, like his father, and with his horn reaching toward the stars he appeared even taller. As such, to see him drop his head and skitter away from her was quite a sight indeed.
"I should chase you off until you've repented." Whistle murmured, mock sorrow in her tone as she shook her head sadly. "A terrible child... What an unruly heathen you turned out to be. Why do I put up with you? You are lucky that such a lovely lady as Amiera will keep you, ruffian."
She sighed. "What would I do if I only had that ill-tempered shadow and a certain spoiled brat to keep me company in this land? I am so grateful to have such a lovely adopted daughter!"
Glancing skyward again, Whistle dropped her teasing and picked up her pace to a lope, more interested in being reunited with her love than picking on or even scolding her son. After all, she could do that perfectly well when she was standing beside her mate again... And Ballad might even help.
"Just wait until we've met up with your father... He'll help me sort you out."
