Upon hearing the horrible stories of the titans, Josh was planning on going to fight a titan with himself and a couple of his closest friends. They managed to secure 3D manuevering gear, through trial and error, they barely learned how to operate it and set off to get outside the wall. When nightfall arrived, Josh and his friends arrived Wall Maria, they went to one of the sides of the wall that didn't have military presence and scaled themselves over the wall. Laughing about being able to bypass the military they ran straight out to stumble upon a titan, not wavering from their original plan, they attacked it but to no avail. Josh's friends were killed before his eyes before he could blink, freighted by the brutality of the titans he ran as fast as he could to the wall, barely escaping the titan's grasp as he scaled back up the wall. Once he reached the other side of the wall, safely back into civilization he ditched the gear they stole and returned home to never speak of that night.
Shortly after the incident Josh joined the Military Police in hopes of escaping his past and to stay far away from the outer walls.

Shortly after becoming of age, Josh got himself a job and provided decent income for himself, which gave reason for his parents to kick him out. He managed to scrape by on his own, but eventually got a better job and began living 'comfortably'. Since living in Wall Sina, him and his friends has always heard of titan stories and how terrifying they are. Thinking these stories are just exaggerations, Josh and two of his closest friends set out to set it straight. But upon returning due to failure, he shut himself in his home and refuses to talk to anyone he doesn't need to. Afterwards he decided to join the military to join the Military Police to stay away from titans as much as possible. He didn't want to relive that night again.
