"Why?!" Sam demanded fiercely, slamming his hands into the Diabi's chest and shoving him back no more than a centimeter or two. Levi took a step away from him, his ruby orbs quickly finding the ground. "Why would you give it away?! Without asking me! You have no right." Sam accented the growl with another shove that had all the force he could muster behind it. This one sent the Diabi stumbling back with an apologetically pitiful whimper. With a snarl, Sam whipped away from him and stomped toward the mouth of his cave. "How could you do this to me?"

Sam had returned home before Oblivion. Not a huge surprise, since the Gaili had just been out hunting, while his mate traversed the continents, giving their very limited supply of eggs away. Samael had returned home to his lover gone and a nest of only two. Crowell, who Levi had left in charge, had informed him that the Diabi had departed with one of the eggs and hadn't said where. At first Sam had thought that Oblivion had abandoned him. Abandoned him and taken one of the eggs to raise for himself. He wasn't sure if that sent him into despair or anguish or helplessness, perhaps a mixture of all of them. Whatever it was, it wasn't good.

But Oblivion had returned later. Empty-clawed. It almost would've been better if he hadn't returned at all. Because he'd informed Sam in the most chiper of voices that he'd left their third child with his mother. Just left her there. He hadn't asked Sam. Never even spoke to him about it. How on Abronaxus's green earth was that okay? The Diabi's mother was probably pleased with it. Maybe she'd even been in cohoots with her son. Sam was having none of it. "I'm going to get her," he spat, wings fanning as he prepared to fly from his cave.

"No, don't," Levi pleaded as he charged ahead to stand before Sam again. It would be disatrous if the Gaili actually flew to Soudul just to learn that his mother had never had the third egg to start with... And Oblivion still hadn't decided what he'd say about that yet. "Please just let me explain before you fly off!" Samael was clearly unconvinced, but he paused nonetheless. The Diabi took a bold step forward. "I don't want you to be overwhelmed," he explained before his mate had a chance to bolt. "We're both new at this, and three egss - three youngsters running about and getting into trouble is a lot for two dads to handle alone." His voice was low, soft, soothing. Probably the same voice he'd use on his Orakoi later. "You've hardly had the chance to even think of a family, let alone how to handle one." A flicker of hesitation passed through Sam's green eyes, and Oblivion pounced on it in an instant. "Once they've hatched, you won't have any time for yourself. I don't want you to feel trapped. She'll be safe with my mummy," he promised. "And as soon as we've proven to ourselves that we can handle these two, we'll go get her. That makes sense, right?"

Sam would've never admitted it if he thought he'd be a sub-par father to any number of children. He'd already had Carrion, but... even the strange Ayrala had already grown from his shell by the time Sam got to him. The Gaili's shoulders slumped and his wings dipped. He was still allowing himself to get used to the idea of Levi being around forever. The nest had come about pretty quickly. "You didn't talk to me about it," he argued in a whisper.

"You never would've listened if I didn't go for it without your permission. You're too stubborn, Samael," Oblivion retorted with a careless shrug. That much was probably true, at least.

Sam scowled, the corners of his lips twitching up in annoyance. "Can you try to sound even remotely apologetic for taking one of the babies I was so excited about away from me? Nevermind the fact that we're supposed to be a team, and it would've been nice to get a little warning," Sam spat. With a low warning growl, he fanned his wings and flew from the cave.

Levi grimaced in response. He couldn't tell if he was annoyed, exasperated, or fearful. On the one hand, he was trying to do what was best for them. He should be given at least that much credit. the Gaili was not even the least bit grateful that he had eggs at all. It was Levi that had sacrificed the dregs of his scanty morals to bring the nest home. On the other hand, if Sam really had just flown off to reclaim the third egg, that could only end in pain for the Diabi. Pain and misery. He shifted from foot to foot as he glanced at the two remaining eggs. "Stay," he commanded briskly, before kicking into the air after his mate. "Sam," he shouted, gliding quickly toward the Gaili. "Where are you going? Just come back and-"

Samael scoffed and flicked his tail dismissively as the Diabi neared him. "You said you didn't want me to feel trapped, so I'm being... not trapped," he snapped back. "You'd better not leave my eggs by themselves!" Though that had obviously already happened once while he swiped one of them for his mother... Perhaps he should never trust Levi alone with them again. Maybe that was the best solution.

Despite his warnings, the Alihora didn't turn back, and instead slipped into place at Sam's side, the tips of his feathery wings dusting across his mate's scales as they beat. "You know what they say; we shouldn't leave a fight unresolved." The eggs would be fine with the rest of the clan around them, but Levi had no idea what the Gaili was capable of right now, or what he'd flutter off to do if Oblivion didn't keep an eye on him. Even if it meant the Diabi had to endure the cold shoulder and blatantly aggressive looks Sam sent him.

They flew in silence for a while. Oblivion watched as Sam's expression twitched and twisted in tune with his inner turmoil. First there was rage, annoyance. The Gaili huffed and snorted and shot his mate glares from the corner of his eye. Then came despair and helplessness. It was more difficult to spot under the anger, but it blossomed free all the same. His egg was neither dead, nor lost, nor never to be seen again. It was merely away from home, on a vacation. Sam's sadness was not for the loss, but for the betrayal he felt from his mate, from actually understanding and maybe even agreeing that Levi hadn't made a terrible choice. The infant would be happier if she had someone to dote after her away from the hustle and bustle of her siblings. Perhaps she'd even be safer with a seasoned parent, though the Gaili was still hesitant about that. Finally, after they'd soared for miles and miles, so far that their mountainous home could not even be seen, the Gaili sighed in acceptance. He could still see her. She'd be just a spoiled rotten as Levi when he did, seeing as how she'd probably be raised with just as much care and devotion as his mate, but maybe that wasn't such a bad thing. He liked the Diabi's mother. She was a good Khehora, and he trusted her to let no harm come to his child.

The wind sank from his wings, and slowly he descended to land among the rocks below. It was a wonder Levi kept his mouth shut for so long. The Diabi wasn't really the silent type. But as both of them touched down, Oblivion murmured, "I hardly even thought of telling you," he admitted. "It just seemed like such a perfect idea. I hardly even thought that you wouldn't want-"

"Well, you were wrong," Sam interjected, turning his face into the breeze rolling over them as he found a perch on the ground.

"I know that now." He plodded toward his mate, taking up a post nest to him and curling his tail around Samael's backside as he leaned against him. "I'm sorry I didn't speak with you first. I'll know better next time. Promise."

Sam scoffed in disbelief, but laid his maw along the top of the Diabi's head all the same. "I doubt it." It came out crass and dismissive, but it almost sounded like a hint of teasing was tossed in for good measure.

More silence. Levi would've liked to suggest they return home. His gaze wandered back in the direction they'd come from. They'd been gone a while now... Too long for the Diabi's comfort, seeing as they'd left the first clutch they'd probably ever have behind. "Sam, we should get go-"

"Hush," the Gaili rumbled, his emerald gaze directed down into the canyon below. Levi stiffened in indignation, his maw popping open to argue instantly. Sam swatted him and pointed down below with his nose. "Look."

Curiously, Levi craned over the edge, joining his mate as the two gazed speculatively down. The two Khehora could just barely make out a small herd of hastar galloping along the rocks. The hooved creatures were pelting at full speed along the narrow pass, with no way to go but forward. But a shadow loomed overhead. The shadow of one thick, heavyset dragon that glided above them, waiting for the perfect moment to cut them off so that his companions, the two smaller beasts that trounced after the herd, could pick off as many of the hastars as possible.

"Well, that's a shame," Levi grumbled.

Sam's gaze was intent on the commotion below. "I'm kinda hungry myself, actually," he admitted, the tip of his tail flicking. Dragons didn't deserve to eat anyway, if they couldn't stop a couple of Khehora from taking their meal. Besides, he and Levi only needed one or two hastar, not a whole herd. Everyone would be happier if they just... picked the dragons off now. "Up for some fast food?"

Levi didn't have the chance to respond before his Gaili mate was tucking his wings and diving into the canyon. The Diabi only needed to roll his eyes as Sam blasted the flying dragon with a spire of earth carved straight from the canyon wall. The beast was shocked beyond defense and crumbled quickly. The sounds it made as it faded had its two companions pausing in their hunt to instead snarl and spit at Sam, still hovering overhead. The other two were younger, smaller, and they must not have been well-versed in their magical capabilities. They didn't stand a chance against the powerful Gaili Khehora, and soon, they too crumbled into dust.

The hastars hadn't stopped to witness the battle, if it could be called that. But Levi hadn't waited either. While Sam defeated the dragons, the Diabi had sailed ahead, plucking off one of the galloping beasts so that when Sam caught up to him, they could have a quick snack before returning home.
