Apple Blossom19

He'd thought about it long and hard. Three eggs, two parents. Orakoi would be enough of a handful without them also outnumbering the parents. He wanted each of his children to have all the love and attention they could possibly stand, and Levi just wasn't entirely certain he could realistically give enough attention to three youngsters when there were only two parents. He certainly didn't want anyone to feel left out.

He'd closed his eyes and selected one at random. One lucky little egg that would find a home away from home. One lucky little egg that would be cherished and adored in the warm and forgiving arms of one of his young friends. He knew Sam would never allow it. If the Gaili learned the truth before he was ready, he'd probably hate Levi. The Diabi had already decided to tell his companion that he was taking this egg to his mother. Sam would still be reluctant, but he'd probably allow it, at the very least, since the female Alihora was family. Of course, Sam didn't know, yet. Levi had departed while his mate was out hunting for them, and he'd left the two remaining eggs in the care of one of Sam's friends within the clan.

Levi could've taken the egg to his mother, but she'd already had her eggs. She was older now, and would make a perfect grandmother. But... She was his mother and his mother alone. Levi didn't really want her to share her... even with his old children.

Instead, he landed on Serenia. Luscious, golden, teeming with prey. The perfect place for a young orakoi to grow. As he landed outside the familiar house, he wondered if he should've given Avani some type of warning before he came, with one of his eggs tucked securely in a cloth pouch slung about his neck. "Avani?" He called out hesitantly, no idea where the young woman could be.

Avani had been checking in on her pumpkins she had been growing. The flowers were blooming nicely and smelled sweet and being around the tall leaves made her feel like she was in a jungle. All her hard work was paying off: The daily trips with water buckets to feed the massive plants were hard work, but she was sure the pumpkins would be big enough for lots of seeds next year.

As she was standing and taking one last view of the plants, she heard the soft calling of her name from around the house. Her ears twitched and she smiled at the recognition of her old Khehora friend.

She went around the corner from the back of her house and to the tree that grew on the side of her house her room was on. There she spotted the familiar pitch black feathers and ruby red eyes of Oblivion.

"Oblvi!" she said hurtling herself at the soft body of her friend in a welcoming hug, "It's been a long time!"

She smiled brightly as she released him and said, "What brings you here? I'll go get some Sheron strips for ya."

She had horded the strips away for the big kitty for when he would come visit again. No telling how much he would want.

The Diabi's orbs popped open wide as he spotted a strange two-legger rounding the side of the house and bolting straight for him. A defensive snarl formed on his lips, and he took a hesitant step away as the girl crashed into him, her arms slinging around his neck. It was only by a stroke of luck that Oblivion recognized striking orange hair and luminous green eyes. "Avani?" He repeated in shock, leaning down to give her a gentle nudge backward with his maw so he could see her properly. "Wow. Look at you!" He beamed. "You've gotten so tall, and your hair is so long! You're turning into quite the beautiful young woman," he praised. The last time he'd seen her, she'd had the cutest wings, and the tiniest, roundest little face. Had it really been so long? He hadn't even shown her the egg yet, and already he felt confident that he'd made the perfect choice.

"Let's hold off on the snack for just a bit," he advised. "I actually come for very important business." He glanced around wearily. "It's... something I don't really want anyone to see just yet. Can we perhaps find a place that is, er, not so close to the house and prying ears?"

Avani smiled brightly, oblivious to the complements, and said, "Well, little things do tend to grow don't they?" She could hardly believe that Oblivi was standing right here! It had been so long since their trip to Ayr.... His eyes still as ruby red as she remembered, she would never forget. And the midnight black of his feathers. She reached out and touched his head, reacquainting herself with how soft he was.

She withdrew her hand as she remembered that he said he had business... But with her? Avani smiled and said, "I know where we can go!" she whistled soft, yet sharp. Soon she heard the clamoring of two little feet, and the brushing of the slick, short fur of Nix's body as she coiled around Avani's legs. Avani picked her up and said, "I can't go far, but Nix will show you the way to a place after we talk where you can always be safe if you need a place on Serina to stay." She smiled and hugged her Fea, "It's a lake that I have never seen anyone but myself and Nix at, so no fear of others walking in on you."

Nix had no idea what the big, black, er... fae thing was doing here, but she felt no ill will from it. She purred and jumped from Avani's arms to the ground and sat waiting for her mistress' to do whatever it was she called Nix to do.

Avani went to the other corner of the house that would take her to the front area. She peeked around and saw nothing, but heard people in the barn. She then turned back and waved to the other two that it was all good.

She crossed the yard and into the woods behind the barn. The people in the barn seemed busy enough so she didn't worry that she, or Oblivi, would be noticed.

Nix, now understanding where they were likely headed, scampered ahead a few paces ahead of Avani. Avani smiled after her fea, but walked with Oblivion instead. The silence was nice to have, but she was bursting with questions. What new adventure would await them?

After about 5 minutes, they were on the "path", to the lake, a semi-worn path, one with overgrowth, but not too cluttered. She stopped and called to Nix, who stopped and turned around and scampered back to her mistress' feet, and chirped and chimed her happiness to be out on an adventure.

"This is almost halfway to the lake, I can't go there mostly cause it's near dinner, and Mama worries a bit if I'm off without telling her for too long. Nix will show you the way when we are done, and come back ok." She smiled, "It's safe here, I have never had problems going to and from the place." Avani shrugged a little. It was true, she had no problems with wild critters around here. She then looked at Oblivi curiously, "Now what's this 'business'?" She could hardly contain herself, so she let out a little wiggle of excitement, "Is it really 'very important'?"

Levi blinked in surprise as a tiny dragon-like creature sprung forth at Avani's call. It was a peculiar color, but also... very similar in shape to Fleckling, a tiny hatchling that had been born of an egg Sam brought to him. He'd never seen any of the creatures before that, but if Avani had one, they must be popping up everywhere. Levi stood a bit taller as they pair stalked off. He fell in behind them silently, slinking past the barn that must be occupied with Avani's relatives. As they moved, his gaze fell once more to the Fae. Well-trained, seemed chipper enough for a little dragon. Avani must have done a good job raising it... Hopefully she'd do well with something a little bit... bigger. Something that needed a little more work.

They [aused along the path, and Levi beamed at the young Orderite woman. "I don't mean to cause your mother to worry. I hope this'll only take a minute so you can get back to your family. But it is very important."

He inhaled deeply. Once he passed his treasure to Avani, he wouldn't be able to get it back. It would be wrong to take the youngling inside away from her, if she was all it knew. He shook his head. Couldn't second-guess himself now. "Well..." He leaned back, coaxing the sack on his back to swing around along the front of his neck. He lowered it down and slipped free of the straps. Very carefully, he unfolded the cloth, revealing a smooth, shining, brown and green shell to the world.

"This is an egg I adopted with my mate," he told Avani, looking back at her with shining ruby orbs. "I'm afraid caring for three young may be too much for two new parents to handle, so... I considered... leaving this one with someone I trusted."

Avani couldn't help but wiggle around as Oblivi took something out of his pack. She couldn't handle the suspense!

As he unwrapped the package, she stared at the brown and green egg that the big Khehora gently held before her. She peered over it and then looked up at Oblivion. She saw the love in his eyes for the little egg, and smiled gently at him.

"Are you sure you want me to take the egg?" she asked quite seriously. She didn't know what to do with an egg... But she saw the resolve in his eyes along with he love. She smiled saying, "I am glad you trust me enough with your egg." She touched the warm egg and felt how smooth it was, "I hope I can be a good mother to it!" she smiled up at him again and said, "I hope I can live up to the trust you put into me."

She took the egg from his hands with both of hers and lowered herself to the ground and called Nix over. "This is our new member of the family. Do you like it?"

Nix sniffed the egg, smelling the new life within. She also smelled the big.... er fea on it too along with another smell, but it didn't matter.... She got the sense that this egg was a new part of her life, and of her mistress'. Nix licked the egg and nuzzled it with her head chirping and chiming her acceptance of the new member of the family.

Avani laughed and stood up and looked to Oblivion. She took the kerchief out of her hair and wrapped it gently around the egg, making a little knot at the end so she could gently carry it back. She wrapped a free hand around Oblvi's neck and hugged him gently too, pressing her face into his feathers. She pulled back and looked into his ruby red eyes and smiled.

"You will come visit, and see how I'm doing ok? I don't know if I can handle a Khehora that might be as big as you!"

She stood back from Oblivi and smiled. She might not see him again for a long while, and it made her sad. She smiled bravely and said, "I should get back." She looked at Nix and said, "Show him to the lake ok?"

She looked back to Oblvion and said, "The lake is safe, and near my house, so if you do come for a visit, then you can sleep off the trip there and then come and get me at night." she then paused and said, "Some of my family is coming to visit so be careful. My cousin would love to get me into trouble..."

Oblivion sighed heavily, but gave a definitive nod. Avani would be a good caretaker while he and Sam acclimated to the other young ones. Levi was sure of it. Already, he could see the gentle care she would give it, and her earnest hope to do him proud. Letting go was hard... But necessary. As Avani bundled the little egg up, he took a moment to lean down and give it one last nuzzle, pressing his nose to the smooth surface and breathing out a warm puff of air. "Goodbye," he whispered somberly. "Avani will take good care of you. And you needn't fret. I'll be around to check on you often."

He turned back to the girl standing before him. "May be bigger than me, actually," he chuckled. Levi sighed again and rolled his shoulders as Avani prepared to head off. "It's... probably best I head home for now, as well. I left my other two eggs with the clan, but my mate will be angry if he learns I left..." He took a step forward and brushed against Avani's hair. "I'm counting on you... Please don't let me down..."

He gave her a nudge back along the path, then turned toward the tiny Fae. Levi clucked his tongue and shook his head. He was thankful for the creature's assistance, but he'd be around to find the lake again before long. Best to be off now, before he had any second thoughts. "Thank you," he purred sweetly before fanning his wings and gliding back up through the tops of the trees.
