User ImageJasiri's opinion of the "red pelts" was colored by what other Bonelands lions had told him, but this was the first time he'd visited the Outpost. They were large, that much was correct from the rumors buzzing among the females. However, the colors were more varied than he'd been led to believe. Many where red, but black and white seemed just as common. And no one had told him about the variation among those called huria. Browns, yellows and even more exotic colors than the trademark red...

But he wasn't going to get away with just oogling new lions. Soon a large but friendly "soldier" had talked him into a spar for practice. Well, it couldn't turn out worse than his spar with Nguvu... He might even learn a few tricks. The other male rattled off the rules used and they picked a place on the sparring grounds, next to a pair of bulky lionesses kicking up dust and trying to best each other.

He nodded his head to his opponent and dived in.

User ImageEld remembered visiting the outpost as a juvenile, and he remembering sparring with a large lioness. The outpost seemed smaller now, and despite the fact that he had visited it before as an adult he still remembered the excitement of that first visit. It took no more than a few hours to get a feeling for where everything was and what was new since his last time here. During his last rotation the Bonelands lions had been off following herds of prey (or whatever they did when they weren't around), so he hadn't actually met any of them. This time the outpost had many foreign visitors, and it didn't take long for him to chat up a bright yellow fellow and talk him into a spar.

It would be interesting to see what these huria-colored lions could do in a fight. He'd heard that the lionesses were really good, especially when working in pairs.

"Give me your best shot Jasiri," he said as the other attacked. He made no move to avoid the attack. He was larger than the sun colored male and instead of avoiding the attack he planned to make his own move when Jasiri was close enough for him to do so.

Jasiri didn't speak. Talking and fighting weren't always a very good idea, and until he knew what his opponent was capable of he wasn't going to waste his breath. He was surprised when Eld just stood there as he charged, but while he managed to get a few hits in, he also got a taste of massive firekin paws. It hurt, despite the retracted claws. The dark male knew what he was doing, unfortunately. He knew he shouldn't try to hold on and wrestle him. It would probably play out like his spar with Nguvu, with him sprawled on the ground.

While Jasiri still tried to figure out the best way to beat the large brute, said brute charged at him. Uh-oh...

Eld didn't mind a bit of pain. The other male got a few decent hits in, but if Eld had been the sort to run home to mommy whenever something hurt he wouldn't have been a very good soldier. He was trained to be able to take a beating if he had to, and he had practiced a lot even before he started his apprentice work. He'd had his fair share of nose bleeds, bruises and cuts as a cub. Luckily nothing major and no broken bones, but enough to toughen him up.

"Good one," he called cheerfully.

While the other lion seemed to think over his next move, Eld attacked. He was not only trained to take a beating, now that would be stupid. In order to win you needed to be able to dish out some pain too. He aimed for Jasiri's face with his large forepaw. With his claws in he wouldn't do any permanent harm, but taking a hit to the head would soften up his opponent a bit and hopefully making him easier to beat.

Being hit on the shoulders and body had hurt, but getting a paw square across his cheek was enough to black out his vision for a short moment. It wasn't just the size difference. Eld had plenty of muscles and knew how to use his body as a weapon. Jasiri tried to dance out of the way, and make sure he wouldn't get hit again while he was still confused from the first hit. He shook his head, and decided that attacking was his best defense at the moment.

Waiting had done him no good, so he ran up behind Eld and tried hitting his hindquarters instead. It was farther from the nasty forepaws, so it might work better...

Eld expected to win this spar. It was simply the most likely outcome. Chaka told him and his teammates that he should never underestimate an opponent, and he tried not to. He did. But really, he was bigger, stronger and better trained. Besides, they were just doing this for a bit of fun and training.

His opponent seemed to have realized that attacking head on meant pain. Eld wasn't as quick as Jasiri, so he took a few hits when the other lion circled him and attacked his back. Instead of turning to face his opponent he kicked out with his hind legs. His left foot connected with something, and he scrambled to position himself better. It was dangerous to have an opponent where you couldn't see him, and Eld much prepared fighting face to face.

Jasiri resisted the temptation to rub the new sore spot on his chest. There were no safe angles of attack with these firekin, apparently. Eld might have managed to get lucky with this kick, but now he turned in tight circles and didn't allow Jasiri to get behind him. Speed might actually work here...

Jasiri kept moving, and after a few quick changes of direction he pounced. There was no way he'd get out of this fight without a few bruises, but he wanted to at least try to give Eld some of his own. It took lots of willpower to keep his claws in, but the rules said "no claws" and he had to respect that. Hopefully he'd be able to get a few hits in and then get back out of range again.

Eld stayed low and turned as the yellow male moved and dodged around him. He wasn't going to start a chase, because the other male would certainly attack sooner or later, and then... Jasiri moved rapidly and then turned mid stride before pouncing. Eld took a paw to the face, and another to the shoulder before he had time to react.

"Good one," he called and then returned the favor with a massive swipe of his own paw. He made another wide swipe, but that one merely grazed its target. He grinned. Winning was no fun if his opponent didn't put up a good fight after all.

Jasiri was starting to get winded, but he kept moving. He wasn't sure he wanted to try for another hit right now. He had a feeling every time he attacked and Eld counterattacked he was the one ending up worse for wear. He wasn't willing to give up, however. He just needed a bit of a breather, that was all.

The other lion made no move to make another attack, so Eld decided to take the fight to him instead. He was a bit too slow, however, and Jasiri easily dodged the attack. They were both getting tired, and in his experience they would soon go past the point where the spar was still meaningful. There was no sense in keeping at it until someone got injured by mistake.

"Good spar," he said, visibly dropping his gard, "Thank you Jasiri."

He walked over to the smaller male and patted him on the back. It had been a good spar... With some training Jasiri might even be able to win a few.

And just like that it was over... Eld went from furious attacker to friendly and laid back in the blink of an eye. He never said so, but Jasiri was pretty sure he had lost this one. He'd got some decent hits in, but fighting a Firekin in their own fighting style wasn't easy. He'd had the odds stacked against him, and hopefully this wouldn't be held against him later. Rumor spread like wildfire in the Bonelands, and he had yet to figure out what was good and what was bad. Perhaps it depended on the way the females wanted to spin it.

"Er... Yes," he agreed, "Thank you Eld."

He had to try hard not to flinch when Eld patted him on the back. Well, at least now he knew what the females were talking about. Red giants indeed...
