There was one other benefit to knowing where Oliver lived: he didn't have to wait for Oliver to text him, he could simply show up a day or two later, leaning on Oliver's door frame and knocking gently. He normally wouldn't interrupt someone's day this way, but he was generally concerned about Oliver and wanted to check in on him.

Harland was in his workout stuff, and as a result he was faintly uncomfortable with his general appearance. Normally he just made a beeline to the gym, making sure as few people as humanly possible saw him in this state. His hair was tied and clipped back, away from his face. He looked pretty different. It was no surprise, really, that he liked being well-groomed; Alistaire was always immaculate, and Harland actually liked that about him. Ever since he'd moved to Deus, he'd actually tried way harder to keep himself handsomely groomed. With his pay here, it was way more a possibility.

Back at home, he'd made nearly no money; everything he did make went to rent. If he had enough for rent, he got food. There was really no option for new clothing or nice soaps or good shampoo. All of those were available to him, now. It was thrilling.

Nevertheless, Harland took his physical fitness fairly seriously. He was about to teach Oliver to take his own wellbeing seriously, too; or at least, he was about to try. One session was all he'd ask! Harland knocked gently on Oliver's door. "It's Harland, I was wonderin' if you were free for a bit? Pardon my intrusion," Harland said, waiting patiently.

It was one of his infrequent days off, a time to Oliver had been sleeping when that soft knocking. Not deep sleep, it was the kind of lazy nap one accidentally takes when they are reading a dull book. When he sat up, blinking stupidly, the book fell off his chest onto the floor with a soft thud. No, there had definitely been someone knocking...

He slid off the bed, and couldn't help but smile when he heard Harland's greeting "Good morning!" He chirped in reply as he opened the door. If Harland was doubtful about his own appearance, the sight of Oliver's mussed up hair would do wonders for anyone's confidence. It only took a couple quick brush-throughs with his fingers to set the unruly strands straight again, but it was quite the sight while it lasted.

"Did you need help with something?" Oliver asked, those bright, pale eyes searching for any sign of discomfort on the former patient's face. He had completely forgotten about their training discussion, and as one prone to worrying, he immediately began to worry.

Grey Dragon

Harland thought he heard a soft thud through the door, but chalked it up to the veritable ghost in the machine. Or, more accurately, the hallucinatory sound in his head. Harland smiled at Oliver and his mussed up state.

Then he grew concerned. Had Oliver honestly not even gotten out of bed yet, or what? "In a manner of speakin, I do, yeah," Harland said, beaming wider. "I thought it'd be fun if ye came to th' gym with me," he explained, and took up more space in the door frame, as if saying: no use arguing, I'll carry you out if I have to.

Despite the big smile, Oliver was still slightly intimidated as Harland made attempts to fill the door frame with his presence. He couldn't help it, after being picked up and tossed into uncomfortable places twice now, he was well aware of how easy a target he was.

"Um..." He stepped backwards in a very Canadian 'yes come in if you would like' gesture as he processed the request. He nervously combed his hair once again with his fingers, it was now unruly in a more acceptable manner. "A-are you sure you want me to come too? I d-don't know much about the gym..."

Oliver looked away, and then nervously busied himself with picking up the book that had dropped earlier. His page had been lost, but he could probably find it again...

Harland couldn't help but fill up spaces. It was just the way he moved, and in particular he was used to taking advantage of his strength. "Don't look so much like I'm goin' t' devour ye," he teased, reaching up in an attempt to ruffle Oliver's hair amicably.

"Everyone's got to start somewhere, little bird, why not try? I'm not a bad teacher, if ye can tolerate me for long enough," he joked.

Oliver blushed sheepishly, not sure what to do as his hair was ruffled. It was the sort of gesture he knew of only from movies and books, and maybe a faint pleasant memory from before his accident six years ago. Certainly on the island he experienced more friendly back-slaps that would send him sprawling. He didn't know why the hand on his head was so reassuring, but it helped him relax.

"I-I'm s-sure you are very good..." He stammered shyly. Harland certainly had his work cut out for him, attempting to teach Oliver the ins and outs of strength training. But the boy was willing, if not eager, and pulled on an old-looking pair of sneakers so they could go.

"Um... I d-don't know where the gym is..."

Harland was always right out of a movie, so why not this time? He was honestly a lot more at home at Deus than he had been in the real world; he'd hardly been able to get close enough to anyone to even consider this being a natural gesture. But it was Oliver, and why not?

Harland shrugged one shoulder, looping his thumb through one of his belt loops. Or, more accurately, he tried and realized he was in sweat pants and swiped the elastic band weirdly. He laughed. "Not used t' bein' in this an' talkin' to anyone," he explained. "Nil aon imni, don't worry a bit Oliver. I've got you," Harland reassured him, gesturing the way they'd walk and waiting so they could walk together.

He'd give Oliver instructions step by step as to how to get there, so he'd be prepared. It wouldn't take so long.

Sometimes in his current situation on the island, it was easy for Oliver to forget that the others around him were just people too. Behind the weapons mastery, bad tempers, confidence, good looks, whatever... Harland's unintentional gesture made him seem more real in the kid's eyes, and less like an unreachable ideal for being successful, or at least comfortable, on the island.

The Life trainee smiled shyly, and closed the door behind them. "Ah... Pardon?" Oliver asked, unsure whether the words he didn't recognize were simply misheard, or if it were something else entirely. He didn't want to look like an idiot or anything. But if Harland had gone this far without being put off by his awkwardness, there might be some hope for him yet.

He began heading in the indicated direction, his pale eyes mostly cast downward, bangs falling into his face. His hair was getting long, emphasizing his shy nature, and making it easier to avoid eye contact. "I-is it often busy? The gym?" Oliver asked timidly.

Harland seldom compared himself to the other Hunters. Perhaps it was because he didn't really get to know many of them, or maybe it was because even if he had, he wouldn't really feel the need-- regardless, he didn't have much in terms of basis of comparison. Harland would file facts away, if he thought it necessary he'd recall them. He had yet to find it terribly necessary.

Harland would be grateful to know that simple gestures like that would take him off Oliver's pedestal. He had no interest in being any kind of rolemodel, honestly. He just wanted to make sure the kid got fit, got outside, and maybe stopped blubbering quite so much. Not that Harland had never cried-- in fact, Harland was pretty comfortable with his array of emotions. He didn't feel the need to mask them terribly often.

☆≼Even if you still won't tell Alistaire,≽ Coyote chimed in, smugly. Harland shot him a mental glare.

"Nil aon imni, as gaelige: 'As gaelige' means 'In Irish,' an' 'Nil aon imni' means not a worry," Harland explained, with a grin. He reached one arm over to wrap it around Oliver's shoulders and squeeze, a sort of sideways hug so they could keep on walking.

"Well, it's full of whoever doesn't want to die before they're old," he joked. In other words, it probably was at least semi-populated regardless of the hour. "But just focus on us, and nevermind 'em," he said, with a shrug. As soon as they got in, he'd show Oliver the different equipment: "Let's start on cyclin' machines, an' I'll show ye some active stretchin' an' free weights," Harland said, with a smile. He pointed to each of the things he was speaking of, to give Oliver at least some idea.

"Y-you can speak gaelic?" Oliver asked, light eyes wide with awe. So much for that pedestal idea. He was a little shy about having Harland's arm around him, only because the close presence of others was entirely unfamiliar, but the talk of languages got him to open up a little. "Where I live- uh, lived... A lot of people in my town and across the river spoke Cree. B-but I could never pick it up, not even reading it. It has different characters than english... A-and pronouncing the words was really hard too..." It was remarkable just getting the kid to say so much all at once.

When they arrived at the gym, Oliver's hesitation became much more obvious. It was one thing to say 'nevermind them', and another to actually do it. Stretching... Free weights... It was a completely different world for the little trainee, and that shy part of him was already embarrassed, and didn't want anyone else to see him so out of place.

"Um... o-okay," he stammered in a little voice. "Can we do, um... something easy first?"

"Well, Irish-- it's just a branch, one of many," Harland said, smiling, despite the fact he was trying to play off the nationalist kind of way he needed to make that distinction. "Cree? In different characters? Huh, I've never seen it-- woulda liked to," Harland said, looking up in thought. Harland smiled to himself. "Do ye remember any of it at all? I bet you're not nearly so bad at pronouncin' it as you might think," he said.

"How about stretchin'," Harland suggested, entirely serious. He found a couple workout mats rolled up in a pile, took them to a nice quiet corner, and rolled them out. "Right here, an' nobody'll bother us, alright?" Harland asked. He beamed at Oliver.

Oliver shook his head. "No, ah... I really used to mangle it very badly. But I did okay in French, in high school." He smiled sheepishly, Harland's optimism was more than he had come to expect from most hunters, but in this case it was entirely unwarranted. His self-depreciation sometimes crossed the border into truth, and this was one of those times.

The corner they had ended up in was better than the main area, but Oliver still shot a nervous glance around. Nobody was paying them any mind just like Harland had said. Finally he nodded. "O-okay, just show me what to do."

"You'd know better 'n me," Harland admitted, with a shrug and a smile. If Oliver was hellbent on insisting, then Harland wouldn't keep arguing. Arguing was, after all, fairly inelegant, and Harland wasn't terribly down with that.

"Yeah, here," Harland said, and then sstarted to show Oliver a series of stretches; they would get to do that for about thirty minutes, and following that, Harland was definitely going to try to convince Oliver that the cycling machines were a good choice. "Feelin' limber?" Harland asked, beaming, "Or has stretchin' been too much for the day? If ye can at least stomach some fifteen minutes on the cyclin' machine then I'll call it a day," he offered, hands up in the air.

HAND WAVING THE STRETCH DESCRIPTIONS e ue;; I don't know the names lmao

Oliver was pretty quick about following along, mimicking Harland's own motions. He was certainly flexible enough, most of the stretches seemed to be too easy for him. Except when balance was involved. He almost fell over several times during the session, not what one would expect from a kid who had grown up on ice and snow.

Even with his challenges, Oliver seemed much more comfortable by the end of it. "No, I'm still good," he replied, offering up a pleasant smile. Cycling machines sounded easy enough. Unless there were tricks involved, Oliver could probably handle that much. "Are those like riding a bike?"

NO WORRIES~ Your handwaving means I don't have to handwave, so it's all good. XD

Harland was pleased to see Oliver really had a lot of potential. In fact, he didn't even give up when they were going to move into cycling. "No trick, yeah-- it's just a bike that doesn't go anywhere, mm," Harland agreed, nodding his head. He stretched a little more, then led them over to the cycling machines.

"We'll aim to go that long, an' we'll cycle slowly for a minute at a time, followed by thirty seconds of cyclin' as fast as possible," Harland said, "that'll be enough time for now." He was gesturing at the clock to indicate how long they'd aim for.

"After that, I'm goin' t' call it a session an' shower I think-- I've got t' clean an' do laundry sometime today," he said, with a heavy sigh.

"Oliver, you're promisin' an' full of potential-- don't rot away in th' dark, alright?" Harland said, seriously. Then he reached out to ruffle Oliver's hair and beamed at him, climbing onto his own cycling machine.

He made it look kind of small.
