It was late and Sara was on her way to see Yue's mothers. Not late enough for her visit to be considered social unexceptionable, but late enough for the streets to be silent. The city had been going through a period of odd calm and times that were considered dangerous to travel before, especially for an unarmed young woman, now had an odd air of safety.
Besides, it is not like she did not have her ghoulish body guards that followed her around everywhere. Unable to defend her if attacked, but would certainly throw down some bad voodoo if need be. Or she hoped so, she was not too sure that curses actually existed. Though if they did that would explain a thing or two.
It was not long before she got to the former residence of the 'One and Only'. She wondered how her parents where... It was one thing letting her go in order to live with her beloved, another to have her not be here at all. Sara was told that soon enough she would not even notice she was gone... What a horrid thing to say. She did not want to get used to it, she did not want to get used to the silence that lingered without her here.
Quietly and cautiously approached the entrance and opened the door. Pale eyes scanning around for signs of life. She was stood as a member of the family at Yue's wedding, so she was sure that she could treat this place like a second home.
"H-Hello? Miss Mom's?"
She stepped inside, one step, two.
"I brought some tea!"
Sara shut the door behind her so that the following spirits did not enter after. It surely must be impolite to invite the dead into someone else's home. Not everyone was as comfortable with the concepts of hauntings as she was.

The home was strangely empty. There was a cone of incense burning at the shrine in the main room of their fairly small house, however, and the smell was welcoming. Above, in the rafters, Yue's nest of blankets and pillows was untouched; they hadn't even made her bed since she had left. Maybe they didn't feel like climbing up there.
It was more likely her mothers, now and again, pretended she was still asleep in the blankets, and would come down any time. Their loud, awkward, happy daughter. The one who had changed, grown up, moved out-- and now she was somewhere cold, fighting the good fight. Or not fighting. Who really knew what she was doing, out in the mountains? She hadn't defected, that much was apparent.
After moments of silence, giggling from the backyard signified that Chishio at least was out there. Yowai slid their back wall open, beaming, and was surprised to see Sara there. However, the stern and impressive woman was more than pleased to see Sara. Her face softened, and it seemed almost like her eyes were about to tear up.
"Dear daughter, we have missed the sight of you," Yowai said, bowing to her, "I hope it is acceptable we address you as family? You have always been our Yue's dearest friend, save her husband," she said. "My wife and I are just gardening, would you care to join us in the back for a while?" Yowai asked. She saw the tea, and smiled warmly.
"My sweet love, we have a visitor, and she has brought us tea," Yowai called into the backyard. Yowai looked so much happier, somehow, than she had in the past.
As Chishio waddled into the room, it became vastly apparent why. She looked like she was at least two thirds through the three months of pregnancy. Chishio smiled, clapped her hands together, and then swooped in while openly crying to wrap her arms around Sara.
"I have missed you so terribly! I miss Yue, it's such a balm on my heart to see you," Chichi said, still crying into Sara.
Yowai sighed, shaking her head. "She has never been much for composure, but the child seems as though it has made her ..." Yowai mouthed the words behind her slim hand: very sensitive. She winked at Sara conspiratorially.

Mother.
Sara did not speak the word, she jerked awkwardly, blushed a little and nodded, fingers played manically with the container in her hands. Family, the thought of it still made butterflies flutter in her stomach. She had craved it for so long and she was ashamed that it had taken until very recently to realize that all the family she needed was right here in this house, minus one very loud Lunarian. However she also felt another feeling, a sinking and bitter feeling. Yue had gotten married, become a woman (and Sara could feel in her bones that it was not long until she became a mother too). She was so happy for her friend, but admittedly jealous, even though she hated her self for feeling such a thing. Yue was so wonderful, she should not be envied her accomplishments, they were all earnt. Sara pushed the thoughts back, she knew from a very young age that a husband or children were not to be written into her story. They had other plans for her. Still, Bataar had recently awoken a glimmer of hope, and once sparked such a thing was hard to submerge once more. She had felt some essence of Romantic Love, more than she could have ever dreams of, and now she wanted more.
Mother, is this the life you wanted for me? Would you be proud of me, or do you still think of me as the demon who you brought into this world? I forgive you your inexperience, it was okay not to love me.
You were scared, maybe even more so than I, because you knew a normal life before I tainted it with my crazy.
Memories faded over time and as hard as it might be to imagine Sara was no longer sure if she would recognise her own mother if she passed her in the street, when she first came here she cried out for her all the time. She was young then and she did not understand why she was abandoned at the shrine. Over time she came to understand the plans the spirits had for her and very slowly the tears began to dry. She did not call out for her mother anymore, any hopes of seeing her again were curried with her adolescence. She had grown, she had changed and admittedly now she had come to realise it was all for the best. It was hard for her to see her own qualities, but she knew that if she had stayed on the farm then she would have not have lived such an extraordinary life, or met Yue for that matter. The thought of a life void of her, it did not seem worth living.
Enough of the monologue. Sara was about to flee to make the refreshments, even though this was not her home she felt the need to fuss. She often stole the role of hostess, though it was not because she needed to be the centre of attention, it was more from a need to serve. Maybe she had an inner desire for domination. Who knew.
"I would love to join you, please let me serve you-"
Before Sara could finish her sentence ChiChi made her entrance. Sara was shocked, still and unusually stiff. She made no effort to touch the other woman, maybe thinking that doing so would break her, pregnant women always seemed so.... breakable. She paused, the sobs ringing in her ears and snapping her out of her surprise.
Family.
Sara slowly went to her knees, long hair trailing behind her like a wedding veil. She did not need hormones as an excuse to be sensitive, or overly so for the matter.
Sara leaned forward, resting her forehead against the belly of the woman, eyes closed and serene.
Family.
"I miss her too. I... doubted her return sometimes, but... I knew she would come back for Jinayu, she loves him so much. Still my heart wavered and waited and ached..."
Her voice cracked her eyes welling up.
"But now I know, she will come back. For the life inside you, she will move mountains. And I will move mountains to make sure that nothing happens to you in her stead."
Yue.
"I...."
She did not know what to say, her world was so corrupt with death... The miracle of life had left her speechless and happy beyond words.

Yue would have laughed so hard it hurt if she'd heard Sara think she was a wonderful woman, but she would definitely have lost her tongue if Sara had suggested she'd be a mother anytime soon. And Yue would tell Sara to stop giving up, because it was unbecoming. And boring. Above all, giving up was boring. And how could someone not love Sara? How? Yue was still surprised she even had a husband. And that it was Jianyu...
Just when she'd given up.
Chichi smiled, her eyes still wet, cheeks wet too. Yowai leaned in with a cloth and dried her wife's face. Chichi's hand went out and stroked Sara's hair as Sara leaned her head against her belly and listened for the child. "Oh, my dear, she's always been like that-- you know, she'll come and go, but she loves us even when she's gone," Chichi said, her voice soft, comforting. "I haven't even told her about the child!" Chishio admitted, laughing.
"Our daughter will be home soon enough," Yowai added, looking sternly at Sara. "If I didn't know any better, Sara, I would have thought you were being self-depreciating for a moment. You are a beautiful, strong, fascinating woman-- accept no less from yourself, accept no less from the world around you," Yowai chastised her, her eyes hard for a moment. The burning intensity Yowai exhibited behind coiled muscle and fierce eyes, the way she always looked when she was away from Chishio.
Suddenly, Chichi smacked Yowai's face gently. "You are doing it again, my love!"
Yowai smiled, then laughed, shrugged her shoulders. "Can't be helped," she said.
"Between the two of you, I am surrounded by lions! Emperor save anyone who tries to harm me," Chichi joked, laughing and then shuffling her way over to the table to sit down on her cushions. "I had forgotten how tiring this is! Or maybe I thought it was just because Yue Lao sucked all my energy out so she could have it for herself," Chichi suggested, shaking her head, smiling.
Yowai sat down next to her wife, and beckoned Sara over to sit with them.

"I know, still I wish she was here." I really needed her here right now. Sara's eyed drifted other to Yue's other-mother, back straight, eyes alert, she seemed to have offended the woman with her own self-loathing and needed to repent. "Me? Never. I am a spiritual powerhouse! I can raise the dead and banish demons with a flick of my hand. No doubt people will write songs about my beauty and build temples to worship my teachings." She nodded her head - her eyed=s dead serious and her arm motions elaborate and exaggerated, maybe that was going a little too far. She chuckled softly and ran her finger across her jawline. "Or something like that."
"Thank you Yowai. You are too kind to me." She smiled at the woman and bowed her head to show her respect. Maybe one day I will be able to believe that. I hope so.
The priestess then turned to the other woman, her eyes still entranced on her bump. She wanted to touch it and play with it some more, even though her child was not yet concious of its existence, she already wanted it to like her. If she offended it in the womb then it would be game over, it would resent her for the rest of its life and Sara refused to let that happen. "It must be, when you think about all your body is going through right now. It really is an amazing thing. To be honest I have not seen a pregnant woman in a very long time, it is almost like time has stopped in Lunaria."
"I feel this small glimmer of hope that things might calm down now, people will start living a more normal life. Drop their weapons, go back to their jobs, rebuild, have families." Sara wondered over to join the other women, crawling along the floor like a cat before reaching her resting place. She could almost hear her assistant scold her about her ungraceful movements and the damage such an act could cause to her attire. It is not that Sara did not appreciate the expensive clothing that was gifted to her by the legion, but in her mind she was still a very poor peasant, not the Priestess that everyone expected her to be.
"I am presuming it was like that before at least, I have never known Lunaria at peace, but that is what it was like at my home. We were all farmers, every single one of us. We lived in our huts, raised animals, grow crops... nothing much else happened, or not until..." Until... Me. A chill went up her spine, the warm feeling of nostalgia turning to a sinking pain in her stomach. She remembered the crops, the warm sun, the cool waters and the country smells - it was heaven. Alas, she also remembered the shouting, the beatings, the eerie voices that screeched in her ears and the look of fear that filled the eyes of her neighbours. She shook her head slightly, pushing back thoughts of the past to concentrate on the now, and the miracle that was unfolding in front of her very eyes.
"Either way I am sure your daughter will know a quieter Lunaria, even though if she is anything like Yue, she might not be too pleased with that." She had said it without realizing, unable to suck the words back down her throat, she instead fidgeted and waved her arms defensively. "Oh, I mean or he. If he is anything like.. Yue."
She paused, putting a finger on her chin and thinking for a moment. Bright eyes, thick hair, tanned skin and muscles.
"He will be the most handsome man in all Lunaria."
The laugh that escaped her mouth came from her stomach, it was uncontrollable. The thought of Yue as a man was somewhat terrifying, but not that different to how she was now.
