Mahogany Sunset
Bedwyr ambled along through the forest, on his usual route. The seasons had changed the landscape of the land again, turning it from the snow-blanketed stillness of winter it had been the last time he came through here to the sunlight-colored scenery of late spring. He'd passed deer, flinching away from him as they became alerted to his presence, in numbers he had not seen in recent years. With the lands recovering from the hardships of both wild fires and a Kalona invasion, everything had a newness about it, like something that needed to be treasured. Every baby bird he heard chirping from the high branches of a tree unscorched made his heart warm.

Recognizing the opening in the trees before him, Bedwyr slowed his stride, ears swiveling forward to catch any sound coming from up ahead. Last year, he'd met a Kalona here, and it hadn't ended well... And this was just the sort of day she would be sunning herself on. Peering through the trees, he saw sunlight glinting on the granite boulders, but nothing else. Take a few more steps forward, he paused and looked for movement.

The destruction which still hadn't been covered worried the mare. This new land seemed to hold something new on every outing, and this time it was the faint smell of charred bark and bones. Ethel frowned worriedly at the sight of the blackened trunks and brushed against them gently with her tail. Her lantern was held gently between her teeth and her orange hair dragged on the ground behind her hooves as she moved forward in a graceful manner. The black marks seemed to be months old, and the air was damp now with the late spring showers. Seedlings poked their way out of the ground and all seemed normal. She wondered how many lives this tragedy had taken.

Suddenly, the mare's legs stiffened and her ears swiveled. Her eyes widened and her nostrils flared. She could smell something. Worriedly, she ducked into a small grove of trees. Goodness only knew what could be lurking out there with her.

As he watched, a creamy mare with bright orange hair crept into the little grove ahead of him. His mind was awash with relief as he stepped forward again, trying to get a better look at her, to see if there was anything threatening about her - he didn't see anything, aside from her horn, but he had one of those, and the only thing he'd ever used it for was healing. If anything, she looked a little harried. Tilting his head, he frowned. Is something after her? He hoped not. He would leap into action to defend her of course; it would be unchivalrous to refrain from doing so. But the most his big form could provide was shelter and intimidation... He'd not fought in, well, a year. Concerned for her, he called, "Miss? Is everything all right?"

The petite mare's eyes widened and she froze at the voice. When she realized it was asking about her welfare, she relaxed a bit and smiled behind her lantern. She turned to him and set the light down at her hooves. "Yes, everything is just fine, thanks." She looked the stallion over carefully. He seemed like just a normal unicorn, and that comforted her. "I was just worried that you may be an unkindly type, is all." Her tail flicked, causing the lustrous hair attached to shimmy and shine in the sunlight. "Thank you for inquiring."

It was only when she set her lantern down that Bedwyr noticed she'd been holding it. He watched her lower her head; amethyst eyes hid beneath her bangs. Her collar seemed to have a huge purple stone in it, as well, glittering in the light. Nodding, he smiled. "Good, good," he said, taking a step forward. As her mane shook, he saw something behind it... Scales? Studying her again, he noticed them on her legs, as well. "No unkindly types here," he added, chuckling. "But, if I may ask, of what breed are you? At first I thought you a unicorn, but I have never seen a unicorn with scales as yours before." He did his best to pose the question with well-meaning curiosity... But some did not wish to claim their breeds sometimes, and if that was the case here, it could not be helped. But if she did claim her breed, well... With a horn, so much like his own, perhaps his was not the only breed with healing powers?

Ethel was taken back for a moment by the stallion's question. She had never been asked what breed she was, and she wasn't entirely sure what to tell him. Vaguely, she remembered being called something as a foal. "I... I think?" Her brow knitted together as she thought hard about what the word was. It was at the tip of her tongue, but it took her a few more moments to remember just what it was. "I think," she repeated, "that they used to call me a kirin when I was a foal?" The word was hard on her tongue, unspoken by her until this point. "Does that sound correct?" Her cheeks became overcome with a faint blush. It wasn't very often that she didn't know how to answer a question.
