Sebastiana stretched lazily on her rock. The sun was shining and she was pleasantly warm. When it got later, she would have to move or risk being baked, but for the moment, she was content. Who knew. It was spring, not summer, so maybe she wouldn’t have to move at all. That would be nice. She didn’t like moving. It was too much effort. She had a pretty high tolerance for heat, so maybe… Eh, it was too much work planning out what she would do. She’d just have to wait and see what happened. She yawned and shifted the smallest bit so that she was more centered in the sunlight. Whoo, that was more work than she meant to do. Time for a well needed rest.

Lexicul bounced along happily, following her wandering thoughts. She was on her way to the next herd to hear some new stories. That was what she was doing. She was seeking out new stories, tales that no one in her family had ever heard before. Maybe she would even become a story teller all on her own. That was what she wanted to do. Minstrels, they were called. She wanted, more than anything else, she wanted to spend her life chasing down and sharing stories. She often lost herself in thought, such as she was doing now. She spotted a strange mare, about the same size as she was, resting on a rock and her mind immediately detoured to what the mare could be doing there. The creature was rather oddly colored, without any particular pattern. In fact, she looked as if she had rolled around in some paint or coloring then wandered off. Lexicul giggled at the mental image and called out a cheerful, “Hello!”

Sebastiana opened one eye to confirm that the stranger was, indeed, talking to her. She grumbled silently, wondering why this kept happening to her. Every time she seemed to settle in for a good nap, someone came along to interrupt her. Last time two complete strangers stumbled upon her napping spot and proceeded to argue over her. Sure, they didn’t know she was there. And okay, so maybe it was kind of entertaining at times to listen to them. But this stranger was a lone mare, and was talking directly to her. She closed her eye, contemplating ignoring the stranger. Maybe she would just go away. Sebastiana considered that for a moment then decided that it was a worthwhile tactic. After all, it was what took the least effort.

Lexicul saw the other mare open the eye then closed it and tilted her head curiously. She waited a moment, but the other mare didn’t respond. Well, that was odd. Either she was being rude, or she hadn’t heard Lexicul. The fact that she had looked at Lexicul implied that she KNEW there was someone there. So… she was being rude? That was unpleasant. Lexicul didn’t like thinking poorly of others so she revised her theory. Of course, she must not have heard her. Lexicul tried again, “Excuse me?”

Sebastiana muffled a groan. Was it really talking to her? Why wasn’t it taking the hint? Seb didn’t want to talk anyone or anything. That was far too much work. All she wanted to do was lay there and soak up the sun. There was no need to bother her, no need to talk to her. Clearly, though, ignoring the other mare wasn’t going to do Seb any good. So, with a heavy, suffering sigh, she asked, “What?” She kept her eyes closed, because opening them was far too much effort, and her voice rough. Maybe the other mare would take the hint and leave her alone. Maybe the wings on Seb’s head would migrate down to her back and grow large enough for her to fly off into the sunset. And maybe, if that did happen, she’d have the inclination to fly off anywhere. Now that she thought about it, that seemed like way too much work. Ugh. This mare was making her think too much. She didn’t like it.

Well! That was a rather... brisk response. Lexicul hesitated before replying, wondering if maybe she should leave the stranger in peace. But, the whole point of her leaving her home had been to get out and learn more of the world. Surely, interacting with a surly stranger was one such experience she should have, yes? Well, that was what she was going to do, regardless!

"Hello there," she said, as politely as she could. "I was wondering...er... well... where am I?" she finally managed, realizing a bit too late that she had no idea how to instigate a conversation with a stranger.

This time, Sebastiana didn’t bother to stifle her reaction. She snorted in derision. Finally, she lifted her head to glare at the other mare. “Really?” she asked, harshly. “You don’t even know where you are? What? Are you lost? No, no, don’t tell me. You decided to go on a grand adventure and got yourself all turned around.” Sebastiana shook her head. “Spirits save me from youthful idiots and their blasted dreams of grandeur. You’re here, that’s where you are. Any other stupid questions you’d like to ask, now that you’ve ruined my nap?”

Lexicul stared at the other mare in shock, not certain how to respond to such open hostility. Perhaps she had done something wrong. But no, she’d asked questions of strangers before. While the responses weren’t always particularly helpful, she rarely met such hostility as this. And it wasn’t like she had asked for directions, not really. She didn’t have a particular destination in mind, after all. It was hard to ask for directions to a place when one didn’t have a place in mind. This whole journey was to learn more stories. She brightened a bit as she remembered that. She might not know where she was, but that didn’t matter nearly so much as long as she learned a new story. “Do you know any tales?” she asked, choosing to ignore the hostility in favor of answering the last question posed to her.

Was… was the idiot serious? Seb stared at Lexicul in shock. She had basically ripped the other mare a new one, and now she was being asked about stories? What was she? This girl’s mother? “What is wrong with you?” she asked, her thoughts popping out of her mouth before she could stop them. Not that she would bother, really. After all, that would require something akin to effort and Seb avoided all such effort whenever and however she could. But this… this… stranger wasn’t making it easy for her. Seb couldn’t for the life of her figure out what was going on in Lexicul’s mind. Not that she cared, really, but how did you get rid of someone who was clearly insane? Or stupid? Or stubborn…. Heck, how could you get rid of someone when you didn’t even know what they were?

“Wrong with me?” Lexicul repeated, once again confused. She considered for a moment. “Well… I don’t know where I am,” she mused aloud. “But I don’t really think I’m lost. I wasn’t really heading anywhere in particular, so I don’t think you can get lost if you’re not going somewhere specific. But that’s just me. I’m not in any pain, so I don’t think I’m hurt. I didn’t trip or anything, either, so I doubt that I’m injured and don’t realize it. Is that possible? To be hurt without hurting? I don’t think it is, but I could be wrong. Just because I’ve never experienced something doesn’t mean it’s not possible, right? I… don’t know… is something wrong with me?”

“Yes, there’s something wrong with you!” Sebastiana burst out, shaking her head. “You’re mental, obviously! You must be! You’re standing there, yammering on despite everything! Despite the fact that I’m being so mean to you. Despite the fact that I’ve told you repeatedly that I want you to go away and leave me alone. Despite the fact that I clearly don’t care what you want! Despite EVERYTHING! And then, when any normal, sane person would be leaving in a huff or tears or whatever, you’re asking me for… for… for STORYTIME?! What the blazes is wrong with you? Were you dropped on your head as a foal? Did someone sit on your basket while you were still in it? Did mommy or daddy not give you enough love? What?!”

Lexicul jerked back in surprise at the outburst. “I… no… My parents loved me,” she stammered, confused and a bit hurt by this attack. Granted, the other mare did have a point. Maybe Lexicul was being too forward. But she was trying to be polite! Wasn’t that what one did when meeting someone for the first time? React politely and make small talk? Try to find common interests? That was what Lexicul had always done. And when that failed, she had tried asking for stories. That almost always loosed tongues and encouraged strangers to become friends. Everyone loved a good story, whether it was hearing or telling one. Maybe that was the problem. Maybe the stranger wanted, or expected, to be told a story before she shared one.

Seb could see the gears turning in Lexicul’s head and she knew, just knew, that she wasn’t going to like whatever conclusion the other creature came to. She pushed forward, hoping to properly distract the mare from whatever she was going to do or say. Or, if she was very, very lucky, Seb might just drive her away completely. That would have been ideal, sure, but she wasn’t sure, at this point, that anything would accomplish that. Not with someone who, apparently, had been loved growing up. “That’s great,” she growled, trying to sound as annoyed and frustrated as she really was. “That’s just fantastic. I’m so glad for you that you were loved by your family. So why is it that you’re here now, and not off annoying them? Surely you have siblings or some nonsense. Or did you get separated from them? If that’s the case, here’s an idea, just backtrack. Sooner or later, you’ll find them. Or maybe not. I really don’t care, as long as you leave me alone!”

“I…I wasn’t traveling with my family,” Lexicul admitted, though she was fairly certain she had said as much already. Maybe she had only thought it, though. At this point, she really couldn’t be sure. She had never met anyone quite as volatile as Seb, and she was definitely starting to feel rather frazzled. But Lexicul was, at heart, a friendly mare. She didn’t like the idea of being hated by anyone, and it certainly seemed like Seb was leaning toward such a thing. She took a deep breath and tried to explain, hoping that she would be able to soothe over whatever mistakes she had already made in meeting this mare. “You see, I decided to travel so I could collect stories. That’s what I hope to be. A storyteller.”
