"Nat! Can you go check on the ferrets for me?"
Nat pushed one last can of cat food onto the display before she stood straight again, her back cracking with an audible pop. "Sure, Dad!" she called back, smiling to herself. He didn't ask her to come help out often -- usually he relied on her older brother when he could -- but when he really needed her, he always tried to give her the jobs he knew she'd enjoy. And really, who didn't enjoy ferrets?
She hummed to herself as she took to doing the basics: feeding, watering, cleaning out their cage. Lots of petting, because come on. A little attention wasn't going to kill them, right?

It had been a while since Sage bought her pup a special treat so when she came across an ad in the paper for Pete's Pets, she decided to check it out. 'Maybe a few rawhide bones or a rubber chewy,' she thought to herself. Definitely not a stuffed animal unless she wanted to spend the next few weeks cleaning up stuffing. She shook her head, the corner of her mouth upturned.
The door bell chimed as she pushed open the door and looked about the nicely laid out store, as inviting and professional as the storefront would lead one to believe. Sage scanned the business for the proper section and noticed a seemingly familiar back of the head near the small pets cages. Unable to tell if she really did know this person, the girl with teal curls slowly made her way toward her. It became clear when she got closer that the girl at the ferret cage was, in fact, a past classmate of hers.
"Natalie!" She called a little too loudly as she waved to her and came over to her. She couldn't help but hug Nat, although careful of the small animal she held. "It's been forever! How have you been?"

Natalie jumped at first - only because it was a little loud, and of course, she automatically assumed she'd done something. The ferret wriggled in her hands as she turned just in time to see her would-be assailant and gave a squeak of delight. "Sage!" Okay, so she was a little loud too, so sue her. Her dad peered over to see what was going on as she threw one arm around her former classmate, and gave a little extra squeeze just to make sure Sage knew she really WAS excited to see her.
"I've been great!" She bit her lip after her volume just kept right on escalating, and she forced herself to reign it in. So sue her though, she hadn't known when she was going to see Sage again. Life post-high school tended to whisk people away like some mysterious abyss, and there was no telling when they'd turn back up as fully functional adults. "How about you? What have you been up to? Do you wanna hold the ferret?"

"I've been pretty good! Preparing for college, mostly," Sage said as she pet the ferret on its head. That was really an understatement. She'd been studying textbooks in hope of being at the head of her class come fall semester. Veterinary technology was her life's calling, but honestly she was a bit stir crazy from not getting out much since graduation.
Sage smiled at Nat. "And I'd love to hold this adorable baby!" She heard herself use that baby talk she always did when referring to an animal - particularly the cute, furry ones -, bit her lip in embarrassment, and quickly switched topics. "So what have you been up to since school let out?"

"Man..." Nat breathed out, easing back on her heels and smiling wistfully. "That must be so cool. You're probably so excited, huh? - I'm guessing you already picked your major?" she teased, poking her playfully on the shoulder with her free hand. Personally, she liked high school and all, but she couldn't wait for college. She didn't really know what she wanted to do, but she knew college students got the best parties and a hell of a lot more freedom. Plus she was sick and tired of some of the faces at school, but no point getting into that.
Nat masked her laughter by pursing her lips together as she gently offered the ferret out for Sage to take. "Nothing too much. Mom's working a lot, and Dad lost a part-timer, and some other guy called out, so that's why I'm here today. Other than that, kind of same as always, you know?" She perked up, like she was just realizing, "Maybe if you're not too busy, we could do something soon? What do you think?"

Sage nodded, "Yes, ma'am! So excited!" And she was, but thinking all of the choices she would make concerning her higher learning caused her to stress. Once classes had started, she'd be more at ease. She chuckled as she answered, "Veterinary technology is going to be the death of me."
She brushed a large curl behind her shoulder and cupped the ferret, cuddling the adorable creature. If her mom would let her and her dog wouldn't eat it, she'd love one. They were just too cute.
"It's a good thing you were free today, then!" Sage was gently stroking the pet's chin when she heard the offer, replying, "I'd love to get together sometime! What do you have in mind?"

Good question. What did she have in mind? "I'd love to go to a mall, " she started, poking her chin with the tip of her index finger as she mulled it over. "Or - or a movie... or oh, wait! Maybe we could go to a park or something." Nat was on to something here. There was a glint in her eyes as she went on, "It would be good because we could talk or whatever, and then we could probably get ice cream and -- and whatever, " she laughed, realizing she was rambling. "It's a park. So yeah. Want to go to a park, maybe? -- we can do something else if you're not into that."
She realized, a bit late, "You know, I don't think I have your number. We should fix that."

Sage shifted the ferret to one hand and dug through her pocket. "Should have something... Aha!" She pulled out an old receipt, jotted her number down, and handed it to her, responding, "We could go to the park sometime, if you're up for it. I'll have to bring Bruce, my puppy."
Her pitch raised to an annoying level as she baby-talked the ferret again,"He'd think you were a chew toy." She smiled and offered the pet back to Nat. "That reminds me, I'd better grab one for him."HanaKirei So sorry for wait. -_-" Are we about ready to wrap?
