Cloudy.

And cloudy meant rain. And rain meant wet feathers. And wet feathers meant a glossy sheen. And if there was a glossy sheen involved, Levi was certain he'd see that wide-eyed, predatory, hungry look in a certain set of bright green eyes. The Diabi practically purred in delight, giving his tail an eager swish as he leaped down from the canopy of the trees, fanning his wings slightly so he landed with the wispy grace of a puff of smoke, silent as air. He trounced back to his nest, full of thick leaves, lustrous feathers and soft pelts. Definitely more comfortable than how he slept in Eowyn. Levi would've done just about anything to convince Sam to move to Soudul, but he didn't even have to try to do such a thing. Any attempt would be wasted effort. Especially with how the Gaili complained of everything here. Most things, anyway.

Oblivion stretched out in his nest, claws digging into pliant earth. A rumble of thunder rang overhead. He imagined the sky flashed with lightning as well, but it was impossible to tell from beneath the trees. The Diabi turned his maw skyward, toward the leaves quaking overhead. If Sam didn't return before the rain started to fall, the Gaili would probably just hole up in a niche somewhere, rather than risk getting wet himself. Poor thing was uncomfortable around water for some reason. But if he did that, then Levi would miss the look because who knew how long it would take Sam to return after that?

Find him. He'd have to find him. Levi would hunt through the rain, so long as he wasn't expected to scramble through mud or anything of the sort. Which, knowing Sam, wasn't entirely out of the question. But until that point came, he would search! That wasn't too clingy of him right? he just wanted to show off his stunning feathers to someone he knew should appreciate them the most. Nope, not clingy. Completely rational. Levi waited a few moments more, in the off chance Sam would return from his hunt as soon as he felt the shift in weather. The Gaili wouldn't have gone far by himself, since he hated Soudul anyway. But no. The first split of static through the sky had probably sent him scampering into the safety of a tree nook, for fear of what was to come.

With one last glance around, Levi shrugged, then took off. He was bold enough that he dared to fly into the sky, even with the lightning crackling around him. The clouds had darkened and the wind had picked up, making it difficult for his slender frame to stay upright without being tossed about by the elements. Beneath him, all the trees quivered, lending him no insight as to where his mate would be. He'd have to fly closer. Circle around a bit. Maybe he'd hear something. But soaring just over the trees seemed even more dangerous. With a simple nudge of the wind, he was forced back or down and his wings would brush the leaves. Tenderly at first, but if a scraggly branch managed to actually snag him, he'd be a little more than just annoyed.

So when the roar of a Khehora speared through the air, Oblivion dove down to meet the source of the sound. It was deep and harsh, with a vibrating echo that pierced the sky. Just like Sam's.

But rather than be faced with his companion still boldly hunting for a snack, he instead found two foreign, strange Khehora he'd never met before. And they were surrounded by... something large and hairy. And gross. Levi grimaced as two of the creatures dove in simultaneously. The male Khehora who'd roared only a moment before managed to swat one away with a heavy paw. A second was cast to the side with a burst of magic; Diabi magic, by the looks of it. But the third was not taken care of so easily. It was larger than the other two. Much larger. A parent, maybe. And when it swooped in, it sank it's fangs right into the Khehora's meaty breastplate. Oblivion was close enough that he didn't have to imagine the sounds of scales ripping from flesh and muscles tearing from bone.

One more roar, weaker this time, and the Khehora was overcome with the eight-legged creatures. A shriek soon joined his dying cries. High, desperate, female. Levi turned his attention to the other Khehora. The two had been separated by the creatures, but she still saw the other's demise. She was dark brown, feathered, with green eyes akin to that of his own mates. And she was injured. If she could fly, she'd be able to escape to safety, but one of her wings was shredded, one of her hind legs bleeding profusely. Levi was positively aghast at the sight. So much potential for beauty and she was risking it battling these creatures!

It was then that her emerald gaze turned on him, bright with fear. She spotted Levi standing there, and the only thing that bubbled from her throat was, "Help!"

Perhaps it was the fact that someone with the same feathery coat as him should not fall victim to filthy arachnids that spurred him forward. Perhaps it was her desperate plea. More than likely it was her gaze, so much like his own mate's. It was not her chances of survival. That was for sure. Even if she made it away from these creatures, she'd still need to find a healer. And quickly. But that was none of Levi's concern. All that mattered was ridding this forest of these filthy arachnids and their disgusting eight-legged spawn. If he stuck to the trees and stayed out of their grasp and focused on whipping them about with his magic, he'd have no problem finishing them quickly. The feathered lady could be bait. And they could attack her while Levi shamelessly shot them down. He liked the sound of that.

He glided silently up to one of the low-hanging branches. If the beasts even noticed him, they chose to ignore him. Oblivion settled all four of his claws on the limb before casting his ruby gaze out to the female. She looked at him with horror in her eyes, alarmed by the fact that he wasn't flying straight to her rescue, as if she thought he was only there to watch. When one of the eight-legged creatures skittered to close to her, a wave of dark magic, powerful and pulsing, leaped from the ground to smother it, and then slowly dragged it down into the shadows. It did not resurface. When the brown female blinked at him in confusion, the Diabi merely quirked a brow at her.

The disappearance of one did not deter any of the others, and it was only a moment later that Levi was slinging his magic out like a vine, catching one around the leg and hurtling it toward a tree, where it was abruptly impaled by a dark spire of power. It writhed pathetically, it's eight legs scrambling to remove the magic that only Levi controlled. The Diabi lost sight of the exact moment the creature died, instead having to keep his eyes on the female, and the voracious carnivores still trying to tear her to shreds. The beasts that had relented in their assault after having finished the male off were quick to depart, their appetite already satiated by one full grown Khehora.

The remaining creatures attacked in waves, and Oblivion had to remain diligent if he hoped to keep them from further injuring her. Some were captured by black spires darting straight from the ground. They were yanked from their legs and helpless to combat their position as they slowly died. Others were blasted straight in the middle of their sectioned bodies. While the half that still retained a head would slowly clamor toward the female, even she was capable of finishing those of with a satisfying crunch from her earthen magic. So she was Gaili. Also like Sam. A Gaili and Diabi pair out here in the forests being attacked by eight-legged creatures. He hoped that wasn't an ill omen for his own relationship.

But at last, they were alone, just Levi and the nameless female. And the fragmented, twitching, deceased bodies of the creatures Oblivion had slain. He stayed in the trees a bit longer, listening for the sounds of more predators. Instead, he heard only the raging wind and the quiet pants from the female. When no more of the little monsters emerged from the trees, Oblivion glided from his branch and landed before the female. Her emerald orbs were low and tired from... What? All the magic she'd used? The exertion of being attacked? Levi didn't know, but she turned grateful eyes on him, anyway.

"You saved me." She breathed softly. "Even... if..." She glanced toward the deceased male. Must have been her mate if the way the sorrow pooled in the air around her was any indication. She was tugged from Levi's side and instead wandered over to the ravaged carcass. It was just a few feet, but it was obvious that it wasn't an easy journey for her. Her wing dragged limply on the ground, and she didn't even try and stand on her injured back leg. As she stood over her companion, a quiet sob tore from her. "What am I going to do without you...?"

Levi grimaced at the sight as he came up beside her, staying far away from both the female as well as her dead mate for fear of getting their filth on his feathers. "Well, you should start by finding a healer. Do you have any Peisio or-" He ruled out the thought of her knowing any Aedauns here on Soudul, so he instead finished with, "Any Peisio friends nearby?"

She shook her head. "No. And even if I did, I haven't the time to find them. I must return to my nest and be sure my eggs are safe."

A nest. Eggs. Babies who had just lost their father. Orakoi who had a miserably weak and injured mother. "Is it nearby? I can escort you," Oblivion offered.

Even as they walked together (however slowly they may be moving), the wheels in Levi's head were already spinning. With no one to help her, the mother would die. Probably sooner rather than later. If smells were any indication, they weren't headed toward a populated clan that could care for the eggs. The father had died in battle. Valiant, if also disgusting. The eggs would be left alone before they even hatched. They'd be easy prey for creatures that lived in the forest or even Magescians that happened to wander by. Nothing to defend them. And that was sad. His tail flicked.

The female slowed even further if that was possible. With Levi at her side, she nudged her maw into a cluster of deep green foliage. Pressing the branches aside, she revealed three eggs. Three lovely, smooth, dark eggs. A brown one that he could almost imagine was modeled exactly after his own mate. A black one with a vibrant splodge of color. And a deep grey one, with bands of soft pink spiraling around it. Levi's heart lurched at the sight of them.

The female would never allow him to take them into his care, whether she was about to pass on or not. And even if she didn't have Peisio friends, she may have other alliances that she could call on if someone swiped her clutch from her while she was still breathing. Sam and Levi were perfectly capable of caring for a nest. They were ready to care for a nest. Both were healthy, active, powerful... The eggs would fare much better if they were under Levi's wing, of that he was certain.

He was tugged from his thoughts by the lady's voice. "Thank you for all you've done today. For saving me. For being certain I made it safely to my nest... Thank you. If there's ever anything I can do...?"

The Diabi's ruby orbs narrowed on her. He would be doing the female a service by giving her a swift and painless death and then caring for her young in her stead. He'd never seen himself killing someone who hadn't offended him, but... He simply couldn't see a better way for this to play out. He prowled as close to her as he dared. "Yes," he admitted after several moments. His magic coiled around him, flowed across the ground and materialized into thick, sharp, dark spires that embedded themselves in the females breast and sides. The black veil leaped up to smother out her cries of pain and fear. Her green eyes turned to him in terror and sadness. Oblivion's heart lurched at the striking resemblance to Sam's, but it was too late to take it back now. "In your last moments, you need not worry or agonize. I will care for your eggs with all of my being."
