Come on out!
Its convention season, after all.
Do you cosplay? Who/what will you be cosplaying this year? Do you make your own costumes or do you buy them? What's you opinion of alternate versions of characters (ex. genderbent, steampunk, sailor, etc.)?

I'm not going to any conventions but I am currently working on a Prussia Costumes. Working to save up for it. FTW is an amazing cosplay shop and I'm excited to make enough to buy it. However, the cosplay boots are over $100 and the outfit is another $100 on top of that. So I need to stop putting money into Gaia cards and focus on Cosplay. lol I like to buy my costumes only because myself and a sewing machine can prove to be a deadly combination. There is Fem! Prussia, Cardverse Prussia, Prussia WWII (the cosplay I chose), Prussia 7 year war and Historical Prussia.

I really liked the premise, of the characters actually being countries personified and the story how those countries behaved during the first and second world wars. It sounded really interesting. But when I sat down and watched the anime it just annoyed me. They had interesting parts where they gave actual history and that was nice, but then they would interrupt it with characters randomly shouting and crying and make utter non-sense. It was like every other scene the animators had a seizure and just threw whatever they could reach on the cell. If they didn't do that, it probably would be one of my top 10 anime. This year I will be attending both AX and Comikaze. I will be cosplaying King Barragan, a Mandalorian soldier, and Black Lady Chibiusa. I try to make all my costumes myself, but of course, there are parts that I just can't do.

Does it cost you a lot to buy your fabric? ah Hetalia is a strange anime, but I actually liked it. It was humourous enough to have me laughing from episode 1 to the end of Season 4. I'm not commenting on Season 5. That was a flop in my books. But I love their personalities lol. I wish you luck at AX and Camikaze. Please take lots of pictures if you can. I'm hoping in 2 years to fly to London for MCM.

This year at Connecticon 2014 I entered the Cosplay Craftmanship contest (Novice Division). I dressed as Yang from the internet show RWBY. [It is Awesome and you should TOTALLY see it!] It was my second year of cosplay and the 2nd build of the costume I had made the year before. It was my first time entering a contest and this was the result: [Link in case the picture does not show]And I won 1st place! For referance this was the first build of the costume from 2013:

I do cosplay... Have been for about 4-5 years. I go to one convention in my state every year- Animazment in North Carolina. I currently buy my cosplays not only because I don't sew but to also support some of my favorite foreign clothing stores. I do want to be able to make my own at some point though... && Now 'm trying to figure out who to cosplay for next year's con. I have cosplayed: Aerith from Kingdom Hearts 2 **her outfit in that one**, Tsubaki from Soul Eater, Trish from Devil May Cry, Shion/Mion from Higurashi, Yuna from Final Fantasy 9 ( i think it was)... I think that's all of it so far..

Yuna and Aerith are awesome. I have yet to see the other animes but I'm sure they are awesome as well.

The con I attend is in April, so I actually have a lot of time to prep. smile
I've only cosplayed for the past two years, but I have gotten totally addicted. My first cosplay was a take on Amaterasu from Okami wielding the Thunder Edge. I made the sword out of foam board which held up surprisingly well under con-conditions. I couldn't find pants that I liked, so I sewed together something similar to hakama. Everything else was purchased and put together.
The love of big swords continued through to last year when I cosplayed as Renji from Bleach with his sword Zabimaru in Shikai. The blade itself was 4' long and cut from 1/4" plywood. I found some really great metallic paint that really gave it the sword feel. It was a huge pain to carry around though. I bought a wig and the outfit on Ebay. I like to craft things, but one big project per cosplay is enough.
For this year, I'd like to do either Anarchy Panty or an original Dark Souls cosplay with the Channeller's Trident so I could do the little power up dance like so: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPKSaZhpLjc
EDIT: I forgot to answer the last question! I have no problem with eschewing gender norms or changing up the character to fit your needs. I think genderbends, crossovers, and steampunk-ification can be really amazing and creative. However, there can be too much of a good thing and going too far with the changes can end up either making the character unrecognizable or make it seem like you're just trying way too hard.

Do you cosplay? Who/what will you be cosplaying this year? Do you make your own costumes or do you buy them? What's you opinion of alternate versions of characters (ex. genderbent, steampunk, sailor, etc.)? I'm going to cosplay, Fem! Korea. Even though Korea was banned from the anime Hetalia, but since I'm Korean, why not show some love for my country!
No, I have no talent for making clothing, sadly ;-: I bought mine. But no wig, its just too itchy..
My opinion..? I don't mind them.
Just asking, are you doing any of the above?
