The last thing he remembered was the wriggling black bugs bursting out of his skin, the searing fire, the horror of it-- Harland flexed his hands as he woke, and realized that he was still covered in burns. It must have been more than a day since he'd come to for the first time, but this was the first opportunity he had for coherent thought. And he was, thankfully, in the bed next to Lilac's

"Hurts," he managed to say, mourning the burns all over his body. He seriously hoped these would heal, so they weren't all shiny and scarred forever.

"At least we're together," he tried, attempting to sound cheerful about their predicament. He couldn't move very much. The ceiling was going to be boring, fast.

Disgusting, squirming black bugs bursting out of every pore in her skin, feet wrinkled on the recall and she groaned. Tossing as the burning sensation from the searing fire tingled each pain nerve in her legs and arms, it had been a day or more now but the memory was still fresh. Still haunting her in the few hours of sleep she managed to get. Harland had been out more than her, waking in short intervals proved that for the man lay motionless each time she managed to look at him before heavy eyes shut. Trying to keep her eyes shut and ward off the flashes that were haunting her, a voice broke through, one that delighted her insides.

"Talking makes it worse," she managed to croak back, throat dry and skin to match. Miserably the woman turned her head, a gentle yet painful smile given to the other bed. Just as burnt as he was, slowly her lids blinked closed again and for a moment it looked as if she had fallen back asleep. Probably don't look like much of a princess now she thought a touch bitterly before a soft chuckle sounded for his attempt at brightener side.

"Let's play a game..," she offered back, unresponsive to the cheerful statement otherwise. She just needed something to take her mind off the possible scars on her body. "I've never, seen a whale. Have you? "

Even if Harland liked bugs, he couldn't fathom enjoying the experience they'd been through in the Sahara. He was trying very hard not to think of it. He nodded, with a sad mm as she said talking made it worse.

It was true. Although it was really great to have her company, it was still painful as hell to speak, his healing skin tearing in creative ways if he moved too fast. He was trying hard not to let the pain make his eyes tear up.

"A game?" Harland asked, fighting the urge to laugh. She was so cute.

"Seein' a whale's a game?" Harland asked, confused. "Are ye... on too much pain medication?"

"I wish I was on more.." She answered softly, a laughter to her eyes as she glanced over to her bed-mate. "Its not about whales silly...its- " A pause in words came as a pain shot through her, the ghostly sensation of bugs again giving her skins the crawls. On a hum of dissatisfaction her head shook. "It's a game about things you've never done or seen, then you say that and the other person responds." Did he not have much of a childhood, she had to wonder, not that she had much of one but she knew about lots of games.

Wondering if he just might not want to play she offered softly, lips barely moving as she spoke, "..or we can just sit here and stare at one another."

"Ah, luv, ta bron orm," he said, sad for her, wishing he could at least cuddle her to comfort her, tell her a joke, something. Make her comfort food? That's what his mum woulda done. Surely. It was a common expression in his family that Irish was the best language to soothe someone, but he couldn't think of anything to say.

"Tuigim," he said, "I get it. Though I wouldn't mind starin' at your pretty face," he teased.

"I've seen whales, yeah. I've never... never had maple syrup?" he tried, hoping he got this game.

He probably didn't. His head felt so fuzzy.

Lilac smiled, or attempted to, she hadn't known what the heck he was saying but it sure sounded nice. It made her feel a little better too but ah well. "Hehe...well, either or.." She didn't mind staring in fact the idea seemed more appealing now than it had before.

Giggling she rose a brow, "never had maple syrup?..Weird.." But a weird that had her smiling again. "I"ve never..danced in the rain like the people in romantic coms hehe." It was getting harder to think, which was a bummer but as her eyes shut this time there was at least a smile on her lips.

"'Ta bron orm' is a way of sayin'... literally, it means I've sorrow upon me," he said, explaining as his mind swam in and out of consciousness briefly what he had said to her. "It's not as simple as the feelin' in English, it's more in the heart, ye ken?" he said, reaching one bandaged arm up to press a hand at his heart.

He had a flair for the poetic and dramatic, that was certain.

"Do ye want t' do somethin' like that? Can't say there's much dancin' in the rain in my westerns, so I'll have t' take your word for that one," he said.

"I've never, ah, kept anyone I loved," he admitted, suddenly. That was a little darker than he'd meant. Was he even still awake, or was he dreaming?

Harland was certainly full of poetic phrases and filled with a flare that tickled her to her core. It was beautiful in that she hadn't met many people like him. He was unique, wonderful and she dearly hoped they'd remain friends for a long time.

"Hah, I think everyone should do something spontaneous and silly once in awhile don't you? Dancing in the rain would be my moment...." Even though she was already spontaneous enough, the thrill held her captive.

Slowly with his newest confession her head turned, bandaged arm reaching out for the bed far from hers. Something compelled her to just touch him, soothing touch, sisterly touch just to let him know he wasn't alone without saying it. "Or maybe we've both never been truly in love?" A teasing giggle sounded in attempts to lighten the mood, be it he was talking about romantic or not, she just wanted to see him smile again.

"Once we get out of here....lets go back to the beach and look for more soap...ok?"

Lilac was incredibly precious to him. He had no interest or desire in seeing her go anytime soon, and he hoped that this new life could be exceptional in more ways than one. "Spontaneous'd be fine, ye've got me there, luv," Harland admitted, with a smile. "Ah, well, if it rains I'll dance with ye then," he added.

"If ye'd do me th' honour," he finished, having forgotten his manners for a moment in his delirium.

He felt Lilac touch him, and that did make him smile. He reached his injured hand out towards her, trying to hold her hand lightly. He didn't answer her theory, just smiled quietly.

"Soap it is," he agreed, trying not to fall asleep. He felt warm, and sore, all at once. At peace and scared.

"I'd be delighted!" She chuckled softly and yawned a touch after. "After all..I need my prince right?" She smiled a little remembering how he told her she looked like sleeping beauty. What a flatter, she really hoped whoever Harland was wooing deserved him. Her friend was a real catch in the way of men that was for sure.

Feeling touch returned her eyes cracked open slowly then shut once more when seeing it was in fact Harland. She just had to make sure it wasn't what her nightmares were currently made of, just had to make sure was all. Smiling silently her arm gave a gently rub to the others hand before resting against the bed and other limb. It was nice to know she wasn't alone. "Hey Harls....thanks for being my friend...I don't ..think I could handle this alone." A soft break came to her voice as she gave her appreciation of him, it wasn't easy for her to admit she was scared. Anyways, you should know if you ever need to talk all you have to do is say something, I want to return the favor you know?" Slowly her words grew more and more mumbled then after a few more moments the woman's breathing evened out and she was dozing, asleep in the comfort.

"Let's hope I can live up to the title, luv," Harland said, amused by the idea. Ever since the moment he'd seen her, he thought she looked like a sleeping princess. He was glad she remembered. It was weird: Harland hadn't bonded with anyone in a long time, not since Auberon had died. It was here, with Lilac and with Alistaire, with Ian, with Oliver... that Harland had found a reason to really live. To let others in, to lean on them. Even though they were way more likely to die and lose each other than anyone he would have met before.

Maybe something about that was what freed him from the weight of having to hold back, to reserve himself, always analyze, remember, thinking and not feeling. Harland was different, was the point of it.

"Lilac, I'm lucky to have seen ye that day, an' to find out you're such a sweetheart," Harland said, his voice growing faint as he fell asleep. "I'll... talk... if I can find the words," he added, half asleep for real by this point. So much so that what he was saying didn't really make any sense.

He thought he was dreaming already.

Except when he finally let his eyes shut for well-deserved rest, he felt a weight on his chest, and in his sleep he mumbled "Alistaire, mo chroi, would ye mind terribly movin' your elbows-- I can't breathe if ye lie on me like that, luv," something he never would have said in waking. A secret.
