Otto went to relieve the hunter on duty in the Underwater Observation post. He disliked this location. Only walls and glass stood between him and the terrifying darkness of the ocean. So when he did have duty there, he kept on every light imaginable, and pretended the window was just a TV.

He didn't expect his partner on duty to be around for a while, since he'd come early. So he sat behind one of the consoles, staring out into the infinite darkness of the ocean with a distant, hollow stare.

How long had it been since Nevada had died? He'd been getting a little better. Mostly by filling the void anywhere he could. Maebe's company some few weeks ago. A new friendship with a bouncy girl named Cami. Distractions. But when the night came, and he was alone, he could feel the void in his heart all the same. Nothing filled it properly. Not for very long.

He wasn't the kind of person to pretend everything was okay, but he was the kind of person who didn't share well.

So while he thought he was alone, he curled up with his knees under his chin, and allowed his mood to become his whole world. Maybe he'd be lucky. Maybe the partner for this shift wouldn't show up, and he could brood in peace.

Eva had always enjoyed the Underwater Observation post. She wasn't sure what it was, really, but it was likely among one of her favourite places to be assigned to. She supposed that she just liked the idea of being able to get so close to the ocean and peer out into its depths without actually getting wet--there was just something exciting about it!

As such, the woman had chosen to arrive early that day, eager to spend as much time as she could with her face pressed up against the glass. With Chara muttering that it would be nice if she were so enthusiastic about actually doing her duties instead of slacking off with them, Eva made her way to the designated area. Since there was still about half an hour to spare, she assumed that she would be alone for some time until her shift partner showed up but...

Upon arriving, Eva's gaze immediately fell on the very familiar figure who was curled up. Suddenly faltering, the bright smile on her face dimmed as she tentatively took a few steps forward, brows creasing in concern.

"Er...Pup--Otto...?" Bad mood...?

Otto's breath hitched suddenly when he heard a soft voice. His head came up, his daze broken. Turning, he saw a face he hadn't seen in a long time. "Eva." His blue eyes stared, bewildered. Trying to compose himself, he rubbed at his eye and stood up again.

"Sorry. Hi.." He avoided looking at her again too long. "You're really early."

She didn't respond to his greeting, brows creasing even further as she stared at him. Her initial thought of "bad day" didn't seem to cut it--the boy seemed pretty down. Curious as she was, she knew better than to pry for this potentially-sensitive subject. If he wanted to tell her, he would--if he didn't, then he wouldn't.

"I like it here," Eva blurted out in response to his comment, only to grin sheepishly and lift a hand to scratch at her cheek, "The water, I mean. It kind of calms me."

...Wasn't so calming to imagine what would happen if the water cracked and all those tons of water came pouring in, but that's why she didn't think of such things.

Ever the blunt, fun sucker, Otto decided to burst her bubble with a careless comment. "Yanno that water's got like.. a bunch of city sized Titans with tentacles just waiting to eat you, right?" So helpful. Otto grimaced and crossed his arms, staring out the window with contempt.

"I don't get how anything about the ocean can be called calming."

Eva didn't seem too affected by his snark, perhaps having become too accustomed to hanging around grumpy people. Instead, she only blinked at him curiously before turning to eye the water beyond the glass with a little hum. Leaning forward, she pressed her face to it and cupped her hands around her eyes so that she could peer out.

"Hmm, city-sized titans with tentacles. Sounds like good calamari to me. Just have to get to them before they get to us, yeah?"

Drawing back, she offered him a smile, only to let out a little laugh. "Well it was more calming once. Before we knew about all these little things that lurk in the waters, I mean." To think that people once just worried about sharks and poisonous fish--as if those were the worst things in the ocean.

If there was one thing he missed most about talking with Eva, it was the fact she was not easily swayed by attitude. Otto was a little less worried about offending her, since she knew he was full of s**t anyway.

"Ain't never had calamari. I had sushi though." His lip curled, "Don't think I wanna eat nothin' made of Fear." That just sounded like a tummy ache waiting to happen. Or worse.

"Well, aside from tentacle monsters. Like.." He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, fidgeting and antsy. "When water gets too deep, you can't see nothin'. I don't like places where I can't see where I'm goin'." He hated mystery. He hated the unknown. Puzzles, riddles. Anything bogged and foggy. If the answer wasn't sitting in plain sight, he had a hard time seeing beyond. Therefore, the Ocean, and most deep bodies of water, were not friendly to Otto. Shallows, shores and pools for him.

"Uh.. but I mean. Don't mean you gotta hate it too..." He squirmed, twisting his mouth as he looked at the consoles in the room again.

When she turned to look at him, Eva looked vaguely horrified. "No calamari? Never?!" Gassssssp! "I mean...okay yeah, we probably don't want to eat a Fear-squid, but actual calamari is great! I'm going to drag you out one day to get some!"

Though that aside, she could begin to understand why the boy disliked the ocean so much. Didn't like the uncertainty and unknown of it all, huh? When he tried to assure her that she didn't have to dislike it, Eva laughed and held a hand up. "I know, don't worry. To each their own, right? And I can see where you're coming from--it is kind of unsettling if you consider that you can't see a foot in front of yourself when you're deep down."

Staring out of the window, she surveyed the darkness thoughtfully before abruptly turning and searching the area with her eyes. "You don't have any tape, do you?"

"Sounds like a plan." Food was usually a good way to talk Otto into things.

He gave Eva a brow raised high. Tape? "Huh? What for? No, I don't" Why did she want tape anyway? He looked at the window to try and find what she'd want it for.

"No, huh? Well I'm sure...there's probably some here...somewhere..."

And then she went through a valiant quest through the room, grabbing whatever she found. Paper that was strewn about (hopefully not important), markers, and finally after a bit of digging around, some tape. Trotting back to where Otto was, she took a seat and dropped all these things into her lap.

"I'm going to make the ocean just a little less intimidating," She informed him, pulling her knees up so that he couldn't see what she was doing as she uncapped a marker and began to draw.

Otto watched Eva run around, his expression hard to read, almost blank. What in Heaven's name was she doing? But as he plan became known, and she curled up like a child keeping pretend secrets, he had to give a brief, amused smile. She was still adorable. Never not.

Otto sighed and crouched down a couple feet away, his chin in his hands as he waited and watched Eva 'work'. "Bang up job keepin' an eye out for trespassers." He teased lightly with a smirk.

Brows furrowed in concentration and tongue poking out of the corner of her mouth, Eva busily worked on doodling something on two sheets of paper, dropping the marker in her lap a moment later so that she could tape the two sheets together...and then began to rip at it, carefully trying to tear out a particular shape.

"Couldn't find scissors," She explained, lifting her gaze for a second to grin at him, "And shhh--that's why we have two pairs of eyes here, right? Cover for me for a bit!"

She went back to her work. Once she finished shaping whatever it was she had been trying to do, the woman went back to doodling, this time using three sheets of paper. Then these, like the last ones, were taped together and slowly ripped into a shape. Flipping both of her creations over, she covered the backs with a generous number of tape loops.

Dropping the extra paper, roll of tape, and marker onto the floor, Eva leapt up from her seat. Hurrying to the window, she pretty much launched herself at it, slamming her creations flat against the surface. When she drew back...well, there they were: a grumpy, "D:<" faced shark with the name "Otto" scrawled over its side, and a larger, "8D" faced dolphin with the name "Eva".

"Ocean's not quite as creepy anymore, eh?" She chirped, proudly beaming up at her ragged creatures, "Who else should I make? Do you think I'd get in trouble if I made a Caelius shrimp?"

Otto smirked again, shaking his head. He let Eva play with arts and crafts as he turned his head away to view the consoles and window. When she was finally ready, her sudden leap up had his eyes following her across the room, widening as she slammed herself into the window with her creation.

His jaw dropped in horror at her 'masterpiece'.

"I...." She drew them... as fish.... It was horrifyingly hilarious. Was that Shark supposed to be him? Geez, maybe he really ought to smile more if this was how she saw him. Why was Eva so stupidly adorable? He continued to look at it, finally recovering after a moment and shaking his head. "You can try, but don't sign it. Maybe we'd get lucky, and he gets so mad he busts the window open and drowns himself."

Beaming, Eva stared at Otto expectantly, hoping to to see a smile on his face. Instead, she found that he looked...well, mildly horrified at what she had done...but hey, that was good too! At least it was a step up from the sadness that had been plaguing his expression when she had first arrived, right? Baby steps!

Bounding back to her chair and picking up all her things again, she got to work on a shrimp. "If only!" She laughed, trying to imagine the expression of the Death lead's face if he were shatter one of the windows with that weapon of his, "But that guy...he's kind of like a roach. Impossible to kill."

As she finished off the shrimp--a quick process, since it was so tiny--Eva hopped off her seat so that it could be pasted onto the window with the other two. "I'm the biggest because I'm the coolest," She informed the blond with a matter of fact grin.

Otto's chin found his hand once again as he gave Eva the sassiest of expressions. "Oh you are now, huh?" He scoffed, looking at the small Otto shark with a harrumph. Was she trying to goad him into joining her little project?

Otto huffed and grabbed a marker and paper.

He got to work, his face contorted into a very serious expression as he concentrated deeply. Finally, he was done. He took Eva's tape, and slapped the masterpeice onto the window above the Eva dolphin.

Otto had drawn himself as a Great White, with it's jaws open and ready to eat the Eva dolphin whole. "Nope. I'm cooler now." To emphasize it, he drew a rad pair of shades over the great white Otto's eyes.
