Megrez had not forgotten what had happened not even a week ago. The knife sliding into the lieutenant's chest, the blood on her gloves, the way he fell over dead. Between then and now, during a sleepless night, she had had something of an epiphany: she had to keep fighting. There was absolutely no backing out for her now. Now, more than ever, she had no choice but to put on the fuku and continue the hunt. She was more motivated to patrol now than ever before, if only out of a strange, lurking anxiety.

Tonight her patrols brought her to a park. There was a certain bench she always sat on at this park, mostly just to take a break from all the walking, but sometimes the stillness would help her track auras a bit better as well. And sometimes, things just seemed to come to her when she sat on this bench. She sat down on the bench and wondered who would come to her tonight. A youma? A Negaverse agent? Another senshi? Who knew...

Cybele couldn't sleep, not after that. Not after just yesterday she'd killed somebody. Instead, she was hunting. That's what she would have called it, at least, but really she was just wandering. It didn't seem like there was much Chaos around, anyway, which was probabally good. As she walked on, turning off the sidewalk into a park, she vaguely wondered what she would even do if she found another Negaverser. Kill again? Murder again? There were a few she would kill without hesitation, maybe even without remorse, but for the rest? The thought disgusted her.

She noticed an Order aura nearby, which was better. It meant her moral dilemmas could wait, maybe. It didn't take her long to find the other girl, who was sitting on a park bench. She smiled as she approached, but only for a moment, and waved. "Hello," she said, "I'm... I'm Cybele." It took her a few seconds to remember to curtsy. "Senshi of the Hunt."

Yeah, she was definitely out of it. A lot of it was probably that she hadn't been sleeping... and that she couldn't get his face out of her head.

So, she would find another Senshi today, would she? Cybele's appearance was a welcome reprieve for Megrez, who had come to expect danger around every corner. Megrez smiled a tight, tiny smile and extended her hand for a handshake. She had trouble managing more than small, strained smiles these days; a "real" smile felt so heinously ingenuine that it would fade from her face just as fast as she could put it on. "I'm Megrez, Senshi of Eggs. Nice to meet you."

There was something off about this senshi, Megrez noticed. She seemed a bit unsteady, a little out of focus. Something must have happened. Megrez decided to ask about Cybele's condition, though she wouldn't delve too deeply if the other senshi didn't want her to. "Are you okay? You seem kind of... out of it, I guess."

"Is it really that obvious?" Cybele asked, glancing down in embarrassment. It had been obvious to her that she was exhausted and distracted, too, but she had hoped the other girl wouldn't notice. Suddenly self conscious, she sat down on the other edge of the bench with every ounce of grace and finesse she could manage, then shook the offered hand and said, "Nice to meet you, too." She even managed another brief, fake, smile. She was a master of those.

"I don't think anyone's okay in this war," she continued, keeping up the smile for a moment before realizing how ridiculous it was and sighing. That answer probably wasn’t going to be enough for Megrez, and Cybele needed to talk about it, so she said, "But... I am more out of it than usual. There was a huge fight a few days ago, when the power went out, and it was... especially horrible. It’s a long story, though. Basically, there was someone there who helped me, but I couldn’t even protect her.” Like always… Even thinking about it a little was almost enough to make cry again. She knew it wouldn’t help, though. “And the monster who killed her got away…” She paused for a moment to consider telling the rest. She’d heard the White Moon Court didn’t like killers, and she wasn’t sure she was proud of it, but it wasn't something she was going to hide. Still, her voice went from being cracked with almost-tears to being oddly flat and emotionless as she added, “Then yesterday I killed someone.”

"Actually, I just guessed from the way you hesitated when you said your name. You don't look like a new senshi getting used to your name, so that was the other thing that came to mind." What Cybele said next struck home, and Megrez nodded and listened to her story. The conclusion surprised her; while she knew she wasn't alone among the "killer senshi," she never really thought she'd meet any senshi outside of Gunn who had killed. She reached out and and gently laid her hand on Cybele's arm. "I want you to know one very important thing: you're not alone. In having killed, I mean." Megrez hoped that Cybele would catch the implication so that she wouldn't have to come out and say it herself.

"But yeah, that's rough. I know that's an understatement, but... the senshi life is rough, isn't it?" Another tiny twitch of a smile came to Megrez's face. "Maybe someday you'll be able to find the person who killed your friend and..." And what? "Do something about them." Once again, Megrez found herself avoiding explicit mentions of killing. "Do something" was vague enough to imply a variety of options, she figured. But really, what was there to do other than kill that "monster?" One dead Negaverse officer meant bunches of lives saved... right?

Not alone? That wasn't what Cybele had been expecting, but it did make her feel a little better. She'd been afraid that Megrez would be upset with her for killing, or worse, be shocked, act like she was some monster, and leave. Cybele didn't peg the other girl as a killer, though, just someone who understood. "I know," she replied. "I know it's a war, people are going to be killed, people should be killed, maybe." She stared at the ground, not looking up even when she felt a hand on her arm. "It's... different when it's you, though."

She couldn't just sit here forever going over it again and again in her mind, though, or think about that other night, either. Both were over, nothing was going to change them, and right now she had more important things to think about. Megrez was right about her not being so new she should stumble over her name. Her upgrade meant more than stronger magic and a flashier outfit. She was supposed to know things now... probabally be the mentor in this situation, actually. Realizing that, she looked up, a wobbly smile pasted on her face. It lasted longer than the others. "But... that doesn't matter now. I do know my name, and some other things, too. Do you need advice or support or anything?"

She was probabally trying too hard.

"Yes, that's right... people are going to be killed. And yes, it's very different when you're the one doing it. I've heard many speeches about how one dead Negaverse officer means a bunch of lives saved... but even if you do 'the right thing,' it just..." It just something. "It just hurts, I guess. I know that, when it happened for me, I was stunned at myself and scared. I still am." Well, if Cybele hadn't caught on to the fact that Megrez had killed before, that was a fairly clear confession.

The offer for help or support left Megrez a bit unsure of how to answer, but she figured one out anyway after a moment. "I don't know what I need in terms of advice, but support... any support is welcome. I think we can support each other through this, you know? We're both going through similar things, I think." She hoped she wasn't too off base with that assumption. "So... if you support me, I'll support you, too."

Cybele nodded. “We can support each other, I think. It would be nice.” The senshi in general needed to support each other more, in her opinion, but she wasn’t going to bring that up. They were senshi and they were supporting each other. For now, that was good enough. “Since we’re both going through the same thing. We both… killed, right?” It was now fairly clear that Megrez had killed someone, at least, and killing was what had been on Cybele’s mind for the last day. The question was rhetorical, and just to make sure. She wasn’t horrified, obviously, but she was fairly surprised.

“ Not exactly the same, though. A lot of people were telling you killing was the right thing? I was under the impression that the White Moon was very against it.” Thinking about it now, though, she realized that was something she had heard from one person, once, in the middle of a weird conversation… from a senshi who supported killing. “Actually… I’ve talked about it before, too. I even promised I wouldn’t hesitate next time I had a chance to kill someone… but when it happened I wasn’t thinking about that at all.” She sighed, and then returned to fake smiling. There wasn’t much she could say about that night that wouldn’t wreck her composure, and she really, really didn’t want that to happen.

Megrez nodded. "Yes. I... killed a Negaverse lieutenant a few days ago, during that event in the warehouse." She swallowed nervously and fiddled with the ends of her gloves. "A lot of people? Well... now that I think about it, it might have been more like a few people talking about it a lot." When you encountered senshi like Gunn and Penthesilea who were fairly vocal about killing, it seemed like sometimes they repeated their dogmas so much that they became true.

The mention of having talked to someone about killing before caught Megrez's attention. "Who did you talk to about it?" Such a promise seemed very Gunn-like to Megrez, but for all she knew she was way off the mark.

At Megrez's outright admission of having killed, looked over at the other girl, trying to meet her gaze. It was the best support she could offer, because this was the one thing she couldn't say 'it's okay, you did the right thing,' with certainty. Some people could, according to the other girl, at least. Cybele had been surprised at first, but the more she thought about it the more it made sense. There was so much death and violence that at some people more was the only response. It was a war, after all.

"His name is Thraen. Senshi of... Gardens, I think? He's the one who acted like none of the senshi were willing to kill." It had been a confusing conversation for her, and it wasn't one she could easily summarize. "I haven't talked to anyone else about it, but that doesn't mean they're not out there." She paused for a moment, thinking. "Well, obviously we're out here, and whoever you talked to. Who did you talk to?"

It would be nice to know, in case she ran into them.

"Thraen, Thraen..." The name sounded very vaguely familiar for some reason, but it didn't meet any matches in Megrez's mind. "Hmm. I don't think I've met him." Cybele's emphasis on "we're" confused Megrez a bit; yes, she understood what it meant (that they, two senshi who had killed and spoken to others about killing, were out and about), but she wondered if it was hinting at a solidarity between them, something like the prior agreement to support each other.

"As for the people I've spoken to... I've met Gunn, Senshi of Wildfire, and Penthesilea, Senshi of War. One of the first things Pen said to me was asking what my morals were on killing the enemy, and Gunn talks a lot about how the Negaverse can't be reasoned with. But the very first person who talked to me about killing was a Page named Megiddo. She's a friend of Gunn's, and she talked to me about it when she told me about the first Order Boot Camp."

"Wildfire?" That was the only word that seemed at all familiar. She frowned slightly. There had been some sort of fire senshi that night, who had blown everything up without accomplishing much and whose fire had forced Cybele to jump off a roof.

If that was who Megrez was talking about, Cybele didn't trust her. Of course, it could have been someone else.

"War? Boot Camp? They sound like wonderful people." She was only half sarcastic. As the Huntress, she'd fit right in. After a moment's hesitation, she added, "Do you believe them, that killing saves lives and there are no other options and we're heroes, or whatever they told you?" This time, she managed to maintain eye contact instead of staring at the ground. "It's logical, but... I feel like a monster, no better than them."

That was what she'd really needed to get off her chest.

"Yes, that's right. Wildfire." Gunn had done a lot for Megrez, what with saving her from General Mica and hosting the Order Boot Camps, so she trusted her quite a bit. In fact, one might say that she was a bit starstruck by the Eternal Senshi.. She hoped that someday, she could wield power and confidence like that.

At that trace of sarcasm, Megrez frowned a little bit. "Yes... Penthesilea is a bit, um, violent." One of the first things Pen had done was kill a lieutenant right in front of her, for crying out loud. Yet she still felt oddly defensive; perhaps there was an unconscious need to protect her mindset and keep what stability she could in her recently-rocked world. "But the Order Boot Camps are great. You learn about all kinds of important things, inside and outside of combat."

When Cybele asked her the heavy question and spilled her true feelings, Megrez exhaled. It wasn't quite a sigh so much as a release of metaphorical nervous steam. "I... I believe them. I've been told there are no other options, and it doesn't seem like there are. Most Negaverse agents aren't open to negotiation when they're on the hunt for starseeds. I was nearly killed by a Negaverse General a little while back, and I'm sure that pleading for my life wouldn't have stopped her."

"I know... It's so painful, it hurts so much. When I think about it, I feel sick and scared all over again. But a few nights ago, I realized something. For people like us, there's no turning back. By killing someone, we've made our decisive entry into the war. Even if we stopped fighting, that wouldn't erase what we've done. We just can't go back to how things used to be." There was a hint of desperation or pain in Megrez's voice; it really did still hurt to think about what she had done, and she was quite certain there was no returning to any previous state for her.

"That's interesting," said Cybele, talking about the Order Boot Camps, and not in a dismissive way, wither. She actually was interested, and probably would have asked more about it if they didn't have more important things to talk about. Instead, she listened closely to what the other girl's words.

"It's so simple for you," she said, finally. "It was never that way for me." That was probably the wrong thing to say, she realized, but like all the stupid things she said and did, it was something she couldn't take back. "My decisive entry into the war happened a long time ago. It's a mental thing. We can always stop fighting, but after the first time I saw someone murdered... fed to a youma, actually, it was... awful..." She paused, thinking of that night a little. The confusion and the temptation of Chaos had ended, then, but the price had been peace. After a deep, shaky breath, she continued, "I knew I couldn't let it happen again." Not that she'd been doing a good job at that... But she was getting a little off topic.

"Since then it hasn't been simple, either. The Negaverse kills, obviously, but... They've spared my life before." Once it had been by Bischofite, to toy with here emotions, but there had been plenty of times where she and her opponents had just... not fought to the death. "And I have been begged for mercy. What was I supposed to do? The girl who begged... I couldn't kill her, then..." and then she'd shown up again and tried to kill Cybele. "There have been other people I should have killed, but couldn't. Maybe I'm not a very good huntress." She paused, then.

"I'm not saying any of this to weaken your resolve. We need resolve in this war. It's just... I'm trying to make these decisions now, instead of in the middle of a battle again." That was what she said, at least.

Megrez felt slightly rankled by Cybele saying the decision was "simple" for her, though it was probably unjustified. It was kind of simple for her, after all. She had made a choice to fight and stuck with it. "I know what you mean about it being a mental thing. I felt the mental transition myself a few nights ago. It's like a switch turns on or something." Then her eyes went wide. "You saw someone fed to a youma? Yikes. If I'd seen something like that, I would have probably changed a long time ago."

The fact that Cybele had been spared by Negaverse officers (instead of fighting her way out of the situation) struck Megrez as curious; there were probably people on the other side who floundered and weren't quite totally committed to the fight as well. "Who spared you? Do you know their names?" The idea of an enemy who begged for mercy unnerved Megrez; she had absolutely no idea what she would do in that situation. None.

"I don't know what I can do for you. I think you have to make these decisions yourself. You need to get a firm grasp on what you want, and then march on with full confidence." Megrez felt a little lame saying that she didn't know how to help; helping each other was what they were trying to do, after all.
