Ever, at least, didn't have a damned clue if this was early for one of the training courses -- or if it was wise -- or even, really, what he was getting himself into. Instead he had his phone out and open to Taym's map, his head cocked to the side, and his expression perplexed: fairly sure that this was the right place but not quite sure what it meant. Still new enough to be surprised. And slightly alarmed.

At least he wasn't late. Instead he was there at twenty to two, which meant that by the time Peyton arrived he had gone from attentive and impatient to sitting on the ground, sleeves pushed up and hair pushed back on his face. ******** around with a phone that was like a puzzle all to itself, with far too many buttons and too many features but, god help him, it was the only thing he had.

He needed to find that library and get his hands on some books.

Having already been through the surprise and ordeal that was the Life course, Peyton already knew what to expect. She was, as was her usual, a few minutes early, but Ever already seemed to be there. It didn't seem as though he'd gone inside yet, and this had the teen grinning from ear to ear.

"Yo, Ever!" One hand rose to give a small wave as she walked up to him. "Are you ready for this?" There was a feigned note of concern to her voice as she asked, drawing level with him and waiting for him to pocket his phone so they could go in.

He looked up at her from his screen, startled just a hair, blinking -- and was struck again by just how young so many of them seemed. Ever wasn't used to feeling like the grown up in a sea of teenagers, but here, that seemed to happen more often than not. It was like he'd missed the boat in his own teenage years, like he'd lagged behind and was struggling to catch up --

He had to haul himself in focus, scrambling up to stand in a graceless way that didn't speak well for their ventures into the course. Still. He shrugged, dropping the phone into his pocket and hands following, shifting around the cigarette case. It was simultaneously reassuring and unsettling there, in his pocket, and he was becoming increasingly certain that would never change.

"I don't know what it is, but I don't mind giving it a stab." A pause. He gestured, with his chin, for her to go. Ladies first.

Smile growing, she took the lead into the big open space that was the Life training course. It was a large, square room, but the majority was taken up by a large tank with something large swimming within. There was a single walk way that lead to a platform at the center of the room. A table sat directly in the middle, benches around it. On the table sat something tall, narrow, and delightfully familiar.

She was nearly holding her breath as they walked closer, listening behind her for the second he realized what that little tower of blocks was, and what that meant.

It would take Ever a minute to realize this wasn't a swimming test, in a pool filled with man-hungry fish -- his attention so focused on the water, and the lasers, and the drama of it all that it was hard to think logically. Hands in his pockets, tensing slowly, he'd look at her before he spotted the table and the expression on his face melted from concern to confusion, instead.

"What?" Her expression looked far too pleased for what he was looking at, and his defense mechanism was a smile of his own: bright flash of a grin. "Does this mean we're not going for a swim?"

BATTLE ARENA

General Information
The portal opens up into an observation room, and down the stairs, an odd chamber for something like hunter training. At the center of a piranha-filled pool stands a solid stone table and several chairs. The Life Arena was built underneath the demolitions and ballistics testing areas, and the chamber rumbles with the occasional explosions above. Pinpoint red lasers sweep across the room regularly, as if hidden snipers are searching for a nice target. In the center of the table sits a wooden tower, made up of smaller wooden blocks. Yes. That's right. The Life Hunters prefer to train via Jenga.

Note: Distraction techniques and Yo Momma jokes are considered viable weapons when playing competitively.

If you fail: you have knocked down the tower! A small dart hits the back of your neck. You come to several hours later, and hope Dr. H didn't do anything to your body while you were unconscious. When you look into the mirror...

If you win: you have reached 50 points! You get a sharpie marker to do with as you please. peen points go to those with the highest scores.

Group Play
Playing in a group on any course means certain things can be shifted to make it a better experience for multiple people without holding anyone back.
An approved group play alteration for the life arena goes as follows:
When someone knocks the tower down, they are shot with a weaker dart. They will wake up 5 minutes later, the game can be reset back to the point before it fell by placing their hands on the table and saying the word, constructum. This allows them to start again where they left off instead of the beginning. They can take up to three of these darts before passing out for an hour, the game will not reset for them and they will need to try again from the beginning.

    Mechanics
    - by carefully removing pieces of the tower, you earn points and advance to the next round. As the rounds continue, the odds grow steadily against you. Rolling a 1 at any point means you have knocked down the tower. Please do enjoy your mystery dart. Anything after reaching 50 points is purely for peen.

    - you may roll pieces individually (suggested for group play) or in batches of 5 (basically, a full round.)

"Yes, this means we're not going swimming." She smirked, laughing softly as she moved across the walkway. She took a seat, eyes lingering on Ever a moment longer, before switching her attention to the little block tower sitting in front of them.

She'd already earned her bandages, this was just a game for her.

Which was very fortunate, because she wasn't paying nearly enough attention to what she was doing, A little too much force, and the tower went toppling over. This resulted in a very wide eyes 'oh s**t' look before a soft pop sounded somewhere up near the ceiling and the tiny Sun slumped forward with a dark sticking out of the back of her neck.

For a wide-eyed moment, Ever was very still, staring at the limp form in front of him -- and then, all at once, he kicked into motion, ducking down under the table and working, quickly, to pull Peyton down as well. Logic, if he'd paused, probably would have told him that there were no more darts coming. If there had been, they would have come sooner. Instincts reacted differently.

He sat there for a minute or two, holding his breath, Peyton settled like a doll across his knees, waiting for more trouble to come.

When it didn't, he felt like an idiot.

Slowly, he pulled himself out from under the table and squinted at the laser beams. No more shots fired, no more problem, just a tumbled pile of jenga blocks across the table and floor. Grumbling, he stood [leaving Peyton where she lay under the table] to fetch those that had skidded away and, meticulously, set them up.

Another moment's pause, and she wasn't up yet. Nervously, he reached for a piece. Fumbled. It tumbled.

And, like Peyton, a dart struck him and he went down.

The world came back to her in bits and pieces. First was sound, though it was quiet enough that what sounds she could hear didn't tell her much. So she opened her eyes, blinking up blearily at the underside of a table, and having no idea why for almost a solid minute. Then she noticed a pair of legs just before the body attached slumped like a puppet with it's strings cut. "Oh."

Dawning realization chased away the little ball of nerves that had been forming in her stomach at having woken up somewhere strange. She knew where she was now, and who she was with, and rolling onto her side she gave Ever's leg a sympathetic pat before crawling out from under the table. The pieces were returned to their flawless state, and the Sun waited, knowing the Lifer would wake up in a few minutes time.

When he did she'd lean forward to rest her elbows on the table, fingers knitted, and chin resting on top of them. Her smile was wide, amused and curious. When she was sure he was with her again she finally spoke up. "Did I forget to mention the snipers? They dart you when you knock the tower over." He had probably figured that out by now.

"How did I get on the floor?" It was assumed he'd dragged her there, but she curious to hear it from him.

Now she would reach forward, nudging a piece from the middle and replacing it on the top of the stack.

Ever came to slowly, blinking at Peyton as she spoke to him -- the words taking far too long to register through the lingering fog of the drugs. He swiped at his mouth to make sure he hadn't been drooling [he had, maybe, a little] and then looked down at the tower. At least it hadn't fallen down again. Yet.

"Uh. I moved you. In case...they kept shooting." He hesitated a very long moment before reaching out to take a piece. Slowly. Carefully. And this time, he did it right.

"Ah." She supposed that made sense. It wasn't like she'd had time to warn him about the repercussions of toppling the tower before she'd gone ahead and ******** it up royally. "Well thank you." His intentions had been good, that's what mattered.

Reaching forward again, she still felt a little on the groggy side. It had an odd effect on her hand eye coordination. Enough so that she managed to knock the tower over a second time. Blinking at the crumbling ruin, the teen frowned, gave a resigned sigh, and didn't even flinch this time when a dart nailed her in the back of a shoulder. She just slumped forward once again.

It was a really good thing she'd already managed to beat this course, because she was doing a god awful job of it this time around.

This time, Ever made an exasperated noise -- frowning at Peyton where she lay sprawled for only a moment before he set to putting the tower back together, slowly and carefully, trying to make sure it wouldn't fall down so easily this time. And then, pointedly, he removed a single piece from near the bottom, and set it on its end next to the tower to wait for her to wake up.

When she woke up this time Peyton merely rolled her head to the side so her cheek was resting on the cool stone of the table. "I promise I am not usually this inept..." God, this was a disaster. Thank God this hadn't been how it had gone down when she'd played with Taym, she would have never lived it down.

"My first time though I not only passe,d but passed within the highest percentile." It had needed saying, for the sake of her pride.

"Uh huh, I'm sure." Was Ever's answer -- dry, and teasing, but without any real malice. After all, the darts had hardly hurt him in any lingering way, hadn't done any permanent damage, and he was in no real rush to get through this, was he? He had the rest of his life to finish up the run.

However long that was.

However, he removed the piece with a flourish this time, just to show he could.

Peyton gave him a hard look as he teased, claiming his next piece with unnecessary flourish. She wanted to be annoyed, but was too well aware that she would have likely done similar had their places been reversed.

She claimed her own piece with far more refined dignity, setting it lightly on the top of the stack.

He was being cute, of course, and that was the problem: going for a piece near the bottom just to show her up, his expression still faintly amused and the start of a joke on his tongue when the tower tumbled over.

A dart struck him, and Ever swiftly followed suit.
