The fire pit on the dorm's roof was blazing, chairs and tables had been carried up and now lined the area; several of them were covered in food and sat near a grill, currently manned by a stoic Russian in a polo shirt, which smoked enticingly. A number of coolers sat on the ground, open to reveal soda and beer chilling on ice. Top 40s music, both recent and fairly old, played on a stereo rigged from a dozen cell phones and red plastic cups. A redhead, hair styled up high and looking for all the world like some kind of vintage housewife, flitted across the area fixing things here and there.

Several tables stood at the cemetery entrance. There were mason jars filled with small flags that represented Deus and all its divisions. Nothing terribly fancy, they were obviously homemade, printed paper wrapped around wooden skewers, but they were plentiful. There were also flowers, wild ones picked from around the island, and the more precious sort, coaxed into growing within Rin's greenhouse. Scissors and twine were at hand for those who wished to make bouquet to leave on the graves of the fallen.

The flag at the main building was at half mast for the day, and already gravestones with peppered with flowers, flags, notes, and trinkets.

Lawrence arrived, dressed in his Jan attire without an apparent care in the world. He had two trays, one in a hand, the other balanced neatly in the crook of his arm with the missing hand. Both were laid out with gourmet appetizers he'd prepared by hand. It had taken a bit of bribing a few different individuals with leave who frequented the cafeteria but he'd managed to create a platter that was up to his extremely fussy standards.

It didn't seem to matter to him if he was welcome or not as he laid his trays down on the tables near the grill, taking a single fois gras canape and eating it in a single bite, satisfied that he did not have to dispose of the whole lot of them, he gave America a wave.

"Lovely setup you have here, missy." he said.

Dylon loved social gatherings. And parties. And ladies. And BBQs. And ladies.

However, he was unfamiliar with Memorial day. From what he knew of it, it sounded like it was similar to Remembrance day, except with food and booze? Americans sure were partiers!

The hapless Canadian whistled as he looked at the amazing set up. "You sure know how to throw a party!"

Otto quietly made his way to the cemetery. He'd never allowed himself to visit his fallen friends before. He'd never allowed himself to. It meant accepting their death. However, maybe it was time he stopped pretending. Stopped trying to deny the things he didn't care to accept.

So he gathered up a couple bouquets, small and simple. He had some goodbyes to cement. The first was Clerise. She was given brightly coloured flowers. He sat in front of her grave marker, quietly remembering her smile. Her energy. Her passion. He remembered her for what she was. A fiery, intense star in Deus. He missed her a lot, especially that crazy smile of hers.

After some time, he moved on to the next grave. Nevada's. She was given a bouquet with lavender coloured flowers. He stayed there the longest, as he poured through photos of her in his phone. It was hard to believe she was gone. Hard to believe it had been over a month already.

Memorial day. He remembered cookouts at home. Fireworks. The smell of charcoal.

Considering the history of most hunters to not really engage in the lesser holidays, he was thinking today would be rather sad, but the announcement that there was a party happening to honor veterans of the war, even if it was a unknown one outside of the island, was welcomed.

He walked out below on the lawn, Rin beside, and looked at the small flags and flowers set out. "They turned out really nice." He said, commenting on the flowers Rin had worked hard to nurture and create. "Do you have any place in particular to want to visit?" He hadn't been on the island long enough and had been lucky enough to not know anyone in the graves. He could nod to them, give them a moment of silence, but the personal connection was lost. That didn't mean he didn't respect them.

America's posture stiffened at Lawr's entrance, the nearer he got the more she resembled an angry, hissing cat. She gave the food he brought a suspicious glance. Truth be told, some of it looked delicious but...

Moving closer to Kostya she asked the Russian loudly, "What kind of a*****e brings liver mush to a cookout?" Lawrence, she didn't bother talking to directly at all. Apparently she'd gone back to simply trying to ignore him for the time being.

Dylon, in stark contrast, she ran up to and hugged with a laugh, "Damn right! Do me a favor and try not to make any girls swoon near the edge."

Dylon grinned widely, giving America a very friendly and tight hug in return. "I make no promises, sweetheart." He teased, letting her go after a short moment. "After all, it means I get to catch them all romantic like. Everyone loves a Knight in Shining Armour~."

Or in his case, a pair of shining stunner shades hanging from the collar of his tee shirt.

Lawrence did not look offended at America's comment but simply shrugged his bony shoulders. "There are some more light and simple canapes there too, but if it is all too cultured for your rustic affair, then you have my sincere apologies missy."

He watched her run to Dylon and neatly sat himself down without further comment, moving to clasp his hands only to remember the missing one all over again and instead to cross his arms to conceal it.

The canine all but ran in circles in his mind with delight, but he made no move to eat anything further, if he ate too much he would counterbalance the only tether he had to his own body, and he had nothing else to focus on.

Al couldn't resist the allure of food. America really could do anything. He wandered up and before anything else, grabbed a clean plate and then tried to greet people. He waved at 'Jan' as he knew him with a big smile. "Hello sir! I haven't seen you in a while." Then looked over at America who seemed to have a bit of company, "is it okay if I start digging in or?"

Rin walked alongside Melvin and looked fairly unsettled just being there. "A few actually." She grabbed a few of her more favourite picks and made three bouquets; one with as many colours as she could find, one with mostly daisies and a single dusty pink rose, and one with firey red and orange carnations. "We can eat after this, okay?"

"Sure. I just felt this was better to do first then to leave as the last note of the evening." Seeing graves before heading home was a rather grim ending to a party.

He watched her select the flowers and due to Rin raising them herself, wondering about each one's importance. The fact she had a few already made him wonder just how many people she knew who had died. She had been longer than he had after all.

He took her by the arm and walked out to the graves, but let his grip be light so she could slip away and have a private moment with all the graves.

Rin placed a single daisy at each grave as they passed until she met the first. The head stone marked 'Clerise', she placed the carnations here. "I didn't know her all too well - but she was a good person with an explosive personality," Rin explained to Melvin though it was likely he had met her but probably didn't remember. She continued on, leaving more daisies in her wake until she came to 'Killzone'. "This guy taught me way more than he'll ever know. He died a hero." She fiddled with her bracelet before continuing on, leaving daisies at every grave. Even passing one to Nevada, being careful not to disturb Otto. Eventually she ran out, which brought her to the desperate attempt someone had made to make 'Clarice' a tribute. She died dishonorably. But the good she did lives on. "You gave so much of yourself to us. To everyone. Is it really so bad to just want people to stop dying?" She left the remaining dull pink rose. "Though it's also very possible I've misunderstood too."

She turned to Melvin, "I'm ready for something less depressing."

He didn't know these people. They were names. Just etchings on tombstones that he had no association. He head them from others with no real context that they were anything more than a hunter of this or that. Killzone he heard from Jerry and some others. Apparently he had been a great person who influenced many people on the island. Aside from that, he did not know. He couldn't connect a voice to these people, a opinion, a series of gestures or a distant scent. Not even a face was there in his memory.

So he walked with Rin, giving private thanks to people who had served before him, until she was ready to leave.

"Alright." He took her up the steps and soon arrived on the roof. He gave a wave to those around. "Place looks great."

Text to Gale:
Going to the Memorial Day thing for a bit. I'll bring you some food if you're busy.

With a semblance of an actual outfit on and a poppy flower pin to her hat (one she made sure wouldn't itch her bare scalp), the message was sent. She was trying to prove she could leave the house and have a normal excursion (little steps forward, right?), but there was still heaviness in her heart as she closed the front door behind her. Stormy had almost asked him to come along, but the words didn't want to form. That, and she didn't want to force Gale to remember the fallen if he didn't want to.

Stormy had actually been there for a while, just hovering like a ghost at the edge of the tables and almost wishing she could in fact disappear from the moment she stepped foot there. Phase through the people slowly trickling in, phase through the gravestones, sink right into the earth with them even if she was being very honest with herself (but these were thoughts best left alone while in public)--things not to think about especially because she had been trying so hard to give Gale the impression that she was getting better.

She wasn't. She had just stopped getting worse. (For now.)

It wasn't just Nevada's departure that haunted her, though it was certainly a large part of it. There were still memories of the other world in Stormy's head, where she had Aria and a man named Croix as her parents, where Clarice and Clerise existed and let her babysit with her boyfriend, where Ben's gentle ribbing still could be heard. They, like so many others, inhabited the graveyard, and for some they had been inhabiting it for longer than her Deus tour.

Maybe it was a mistake to come at all if this was all she could think about.

Stormy inhaled the smell of food nearby and exhaled slowly, then forced herself to move. With slow, almost methodical steps she landed herself beside Otto, at first not saying anything at all. Her eyes fell to Nevada's grave and stayed there. She had arrived without anything to give, without a flower or a note or anything remotely to denote her presence. Then again, she didn't believe in visiting graves to speak with the dead.

(And she still had anger in her heart.)

"How've you been?" she eventually asked Otto in a scratchy voice, her eyes still downcast.

"Got some room for more?"

Nora arrived with a large platter of freshly baked peach pie in hand. She had actually meant to keep it all to herself, section it off by the week as a treat or see if she could use it to barter for things like better soap or favors (she had yet to learn the beach was strangely populated by the former), but having learned about the American holiday, she decided to pitch in and be generous. And good thing too, judging by the smells coming from the grill.

Otto lifted his head, his heavy eyes finding Stormy after a moment of disorientation. He'd been lost in his own thoughts for so long, the real world almost seemed unreal. He hadn't seen Stormy since that day.

"Um... okay. I guess." He murmured quietly, letting his head fall back down as he held his phone close to his body. "You okay?"
