It wasn't often (or really at all. Ever) that Arilee was nervous. But tonight, oh sweet baby Cthulhu, her stomach was doing a damned jig. Taking a deep breath, she stood in front of the bathroom mirror and swept her fingers through her hair one last time before smoothing down the lacey dress she was wearing.
Huh, she thought. Me. In lace. Truly, the world is ending. She took another moment to make sure every last little touch was in place before giving herself a crooked grin and exiting the bathroom. Grabbing Sanskrit, his leash and waterdish as well as his favorite chewy toy, she quickly clipped the leash to his collar and grabbed her house keys.
Don't forget your purse, stupid, she berated herself as she nearly walked out with it. Tonight will kind of fail without the purse. Or more specifically, what was in the purse.
"Good thing Momma asked Ava to take the picnic stuff on ahead, isn't it, boy," she murmured to the little dog as he danced and huffed in place, sensing her own excitement. Quickly locking the door, she and Sanskrit headed towards the park. With luck, she'd make it there a little before Ava. With the butterflies in her stomach, she had a feeling that the walk over alone would not be enough to compose herself.

Ava wasn't entirely fond of parks, but being out with Arilee made her feel a lot better. Just knowing that her girlfriend and Sanskrit would be waiting to meet her. Even if she'd left first. And was currently alone.
By the time she caught up to Ari and Sanskrit, she was very ready to be around another person, and so she happily linked arms with her and gave the blonde a huge smile. "Looks like you managed to get here faster than me after all!" She said, and then she laughed lightly. It was a good thing she was totally comfortable with Ari, or she'd be worried about making a scaredy dork of herself.
She leaned up and kissed Ari's cheek, nerves already calming just by being around the other girl.
"So what's the plan? Besides an awesome picnic."

Arilee's nerves jangled as Ava kissed her cheek, though she managed to keep from stammering and making an idiot of herself. Grinning, she inclined her head a little to draw Ava's attention to Sanskrit's happy bouncing.
"Well, I figured relaxing and not thinking at all about work made a pretty good plan. Eating good food and trying to defend it from a sneaky pup was a close second. Those sound like good plans?"
If it were not for the fact that she wanted to find a place to sit for a moment, she would have dropped to her knees right then and there. As it was, there were a few too many people around for her own comfort. Somehow, Arilee didn't want an audience for this. It was too personal and was something that she wanted to be only between herself, Ava and the dog.
"How does finding a place not surrounded by people sound? I think we'll have some luck back in those trees over there."

Ava laughed and nodded. God, this sounded so very, very perfect. How was she so lucky? How did she have such an amazing girlfriend, who was willing to plan this for her? How had she landed Arilee Selvig, the gorgeous, flirtatious, charming, perfect princess who had crashed into her life as Sailor Chariklo?
"Yeah, those both sound like really, really good plans." She acknowledged, and she detached for the moment if only to look where Arilee was indicating. Away from people sounded really good, and really really romantic.
"Sure, I bet so," she said, and she slid her and into Arilee's and practically skipped over.

Oh sweet gods, she was skipping. Skipping! Just when Arilee thought that Ava couldn't be any more of an adorable dork, she went and out adorabled herself. Laughing she led the way to the trees and gave a sigh of relief to see that she'd been right about no people really being back here. With a happy nod, she indicated that Ava should set out the picnic stuff while she herself saw to the dog.
Quickly staking Sanskrit's leash to the ground so he couldn't run away, she put his water dish within easy reach, gave him his chewy toy and then proceeded to sneak a certain something out of her purse while Ava's back was turned. Slipping it into the pocket of her dress, she found herself smiling with anticipation.
Once she was satisfied that her own part was taken care of, she moved to help Ava with the blanket and food. Not that she'd be able to eat just yet, but she could still help. Besides, she wanted this to all seem like a normal date for as long as possible.
Flopping down on the blanket she sighed with contentment.
"This is nice," she murmured. "Why aren't we doing stuff like that more often?"

Ava set out the picnic things, humming cheerily the entire time. She smoothed out her skirt and then sat down, carefully crossing her legs as she set the food out of the basket.
"I dunno, maybe because we keep having to deal with...work stuff?" She asked, and her fingers reached out to brush Ari's scars. She still wished she had been there, to help. Maybe they could've recovered Bianca's starseed and her body, with two - or maybe nothing would have changed, but she would feel better.
"Still, it's nice when we do get to do stuff like this."

"Oh yeah," she grumbled softly. "Work stuff. Sigh."
Closing her eyes, she tensed slightly as she felt Ava brush her fingertips over the scars on her cheek. Part of her wanted to flinch away from the memory. Hell, part of her wanted to flinch period. Those scars were a reminder of failure.
Before she could start crying, she forced her mind away from the subject of scars and failure. Cracking open an eye to make sure she didn't make a total fool of herself, she grinned and flopped over on the blanket just enough to rest her head against Ava's leg.
"Much better. And you're right. It's great to be able to spend time with you like this. Maybe someday we won't have to worry so much about work stuff."
Not that she disliked being a Dark Mirror. Oh hell, she loved it. But there were times when she wondered a little wistfully if there would ever be a time when she wouldn't have to worry about fighting and making sure no one else died on her watch. Crazy, she thought. You are going crazy, self. You are turning emo. Stahp.
Sighing again, she propped herself up on her elbows. She was hardly the romantic type. She'd wanted to wait until later until all the details were perfect and out of a damned magazine. But right now, that felt too fake. She'd always followed her instincts and right now they were screaming at her to do the thing.
"So," she said lightly. "I wanted to ask you something, Ava."

When Arilee laid her head on Ava's leg, Ava immediately reached down to run her fingers through the blonde's hair. She couldn't stop smiling, and maybe she looked a little bit like an idiot, but even with the discussion having turned to sad topics, she couldn't help but feel happy and comfortable around her girlfriend. Sure, what they did sucked. Sure, it was likely to someday go even more wrong than it had.
But it had brought them together, and she couldn't ask for a more wonderful outcome than that, and so smiles it was, in the end.
When Arilee lifted herself up, Ava blinked, confusion apparent on her face.
"Sure, what do you want to ask me?" She said, and she really had no idea. Was it something war-related? She hoped not, that would kind of ruin the romantic evening.

Pushing herself up into a sitting position, she glanced over her shoulder at Ava and grinned before rolling to her knees and resting one against the cool grass while she dug around in her pocket.
After a moment, she withdrew a small box decorated to look like something out of a Super Mario Bros. game. Taking a deep breath, Arilee smiled up into Ava's eyes and held the box out in one hand, while the other was draped casually over her leg.
"Marry me?"
Oh, yes. Good job, self. Much romance. Wow.Songstress Kitsune Hooray, I am trying to not be a useless slug!

Avacyn froze for a long moment. It wasn't that she particularly had to think about her answer, or anything like that - it was just that her brain was still bumping into the idea that not only did Arilee want to be with her, she wanted to marry her - and she'd gone the extra mile to make a nerdy custom ringbox.
Finally, a loud excited squeal got out, and she threw herself at Ari, clinging tightly to her girlfriend - fiancee.
"Yes! Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!" She said, sobbing joyously. "Yes forever, yes times infinity."

Grinning as she caught Ava and planted an enthusiastic kiss on her, Arilee closed her eyes and resisted the urge to join Ava in joyful sobs. Instead, she held Ava tight and muttered at Sanskrit to stop barking at them for a moment.
"Well, babylove," she murmured. "I was pretty sure you would say yes, but part of me was still afraid you might look at my scarred up, crazy a** and refuse. Why not take a peek at the ring?"
Truthfully, she just wanted to see Ava's reaction to the Player 1 and Player 2 tags. And maybe also a moment to sniffle into her arm and wipe a few stray tears away.
Holy ********. She was engaged.
After a moment, of letting that sink in, she felt an overwhelming rush of something almost like panic.
"Umm... I have no idea how to plan a wedding, do you?"

Avacyn couldn't stop grinning, even as joyful tears started rolling down her cheeks. God, she loved Ari so much, she couldn't get over how amazing this felt.
She carefully picked up the ringbox and opened it, and she let out another little delighted noise. The inside was jsut as precious as the outside, with the little Player 1 and Player 2 labels - she slid the ring out of the Player 2 slot and onto her finger.
"Well, that's not going anywhere. Until I have a wedding band to replace it, I guess," she said, and then she leaned in to catch Arilee in a quick kiss.
And then she felt her heart start to race for an entirely different reason.
"Oh, jeez..." She admitted, "I don't...know how to either. We may have to bring in some outside help. There are wedding planners, right? That's a thing?"

The burst of panic faded slightly. Right. Planners. Planners were a thing. Draping an arm around Ava, she thought quickly.
"Okay, we can look for a planner. Uhh... any special requests? Gonna warn you up front though, I am not allowing an Elvis impersonator anywhere near us."
Grinning crookedly, she hugged Ava close and tried to wrap her head around the fact that she was engaged. She was getting married. Her. The eternal horndog was settling down. Holy s**t.
"I think you should move in with me right away. My place is sure as hell big enough for the both of us."

Avacyn tapped her finger to her chin for a moment, and suddenly a very playful grin appeared on her face. "What about a Doctor impersonator? Any way I could talk you into that? Ten, probably, Ten was cool." She was mostly joking, but alright, being married by The Doctor would be pretty amazing.
"I'll have to let the boys know, we were all good and used to being neighbors, but...I'd like that," she said. Living with Arilee and Sanskrit...yes, that sounded wonderful.

Loosening her grip on Ava for a breath, Arilee treated her fiancé to a squint. Doctor Who impersonators were a thing at weddings now? She'd tried to watch it, she really had, but well... it was safe to say that she was not and never would be a Whovian.
"I'll consider it. But it might take a hell of a lot of bribery to get me to agree. As for the boys," she paused and grinned. "They're grown up, I'm sure they'll manage. Maybe I'm selfish, but I want you all to myself for a long, long time. I want to keep you safe."
She gave Ava a gentle squeeze and planter a feather soft kiss on her forehead.
"I'm not letting anything separate us, babe," she murmured softly.
