On the way away from the warehouse, Virgo was so angry she could barely speak. Angry, embarrassed, and generally--she didn't really like feeling that way--but it happened all the time anymore. She took a deep breath, and let herself power down.

What she needed was to just never henshin again, ever. She became someone she didn't like, and felt things she didn't want to feel when she was Virgo. She didn't want to be responsible for all the lives left behind in that warehouse, and because she was Virgo, because they were senshi lives, she was. The Zodiac guarded. That was why they had been allowed to leave their overrun homeworlds and take refuge within this system. Because they guarded.

Elke stood between two taller men, and breathed until she was calm. Once she was calm, she said, "Neso, is your stomach okay?"

Once Virgo was walking on her own, Neso fell into an easy stride beside her, his mouth generally upturned but not smiling. Blue eyes strayed to Babylon once, then back to Elke. Bifrost had made it out with them, but had gone her own way. When the time was right, maybe the Senshi of Summer would run into her again! She seemed like a nice girl, and he did love protective women. Also, all women.

When Virgo became Elke, Neso blinked and became Bo, dressed a lot less charmingly than his fuku in a blue hoody, cargo shorts, and flip-flops. He touched at his stomach lightly when Elke mentioned it. "This old thing?" he said, gently rubbing circles across the taut muscles there. "Right as rain."

Then, a bit slowly: "You look great. What do you need?" He smiled, as if they were meeting up for coffee and were exchanging simple pleasantries.

Babylon followed suit, letting his furs fade in exchange for far more seasonally appropriate jeans and a t-shirt. Perhaps it would have been better if he'd gone off with Bifrost, he realized, considering that no one had addressed him yet and Elke and Bo probably had a lot to catch up on.

Or maybe this was the silent treatment, in exchange for picking Virgo up and literally dragging her away from the scene of a battle. She didn't look happy.

"I'm fine," he offered, since no one had asked. As far as he could tell, he'd been at that fight just to take up space. His actual role had been more or less negligible.

Anyway, he wasn't exactly sure how to proceed, so he was going to shut up.

She looked great? Well, she felt like s**t. She had wanted to--she wanted... She ran her hands over her hair, which was still sticky with sweat from the heat and trying to get away long enough to beat the s**t out of Persephone or get the s**t beat out of herself. The pink leather jacket that had seemed just right for the chilly late spring evening now seemed claustrophobic, and she pulled it off to expose bony shoulders. Bo wanted to know what she needed and everything she wanted to ask for was unreasonable. Instead, she offered the jacket to him and asked, "Could you hold this, please?"

What she wanted was brain surgery. Maybe a lobotomy, even. She would accept having never awakened as Sailor Virgo. She wasn't going to get any of that from Finn or Bo, though, so she resigned herself to dealing with everything with her mental faculties intact. "I need a drink," she said, because that certainly seemed like the closest she was going to get to forgetting the whole humiliating situation they'd just left.

Too bad Elke wasn't legal yet, by American standards. "I'm glad you two got out alright," she said, reaching out to take their hands into hers. "We should go eat something." Or, they should. She kind of just wanted to not be alone.

When Finn spoke up, Bo gave the boy a smile, but made no apology. He sometimes got lost in Zodiac World, and that was a world that didn't have Finn in it, unfortunately. But as he didn't like anyone to feel left out, he tried to look as appreciative of Finn's presence as possible, which more or less meant lots of smiling and periodically glancing over to remind him that Bo still knew he existed and appreciated it.

Elke seemed to be coming down from whatever scary high (or low) she had been on. Holding a jacket? Piece of cake. Bo took it with a smile, hooking it on his index finger and then flipping it dramatically over his shoulder. When she proposed a drink, his smile turned 1000 kilowatts.

"I may or may not know a certain establishment in this vicinity that will not demand identification for libation," he said, twirling a mustache he did not have. "Chicken fingers aren't bad either. They have fries. Salad. Bar food stuff. Killer oysters, believe it or not." Bo quickly explained the location of Killian's, an Irish pub maybe a ten minute walk away.

Then Elke's hand slipped into his, warming his heart. (Bo liked all kinds of three-ways, and three-way hand-holding was one of them!) "Finn," Bo said, putting extra emphasis on the other boy's name, "you're coming with us. I owe you coffee. I put it down. Somewhere." He pointed back toward the factory, the smoke that billowed into the air. "I could turn that coffee into beer easily." One eyebrow raised up -- SEE? BO WAS BEING INCLUSIVE? He felt extra proud of himself for it.

"Oh, uh," said Finn, who had almost completely forgotten being fifteen minutes late to the battle with Starbucks. "The coffee was for Gunn," he clarified sheepishly, but Gunn was unlikely to miss what she's never known was hers in the first place. Beer sounded good, just like food did - and Virgo's hand in his reassured him that their friendship was not over.

She was okay.

They were all okay.

"So, uh, power's back on," he observed, gesturing up to the street lights. That was a good sign if he'd ever seen one. "Dinner sounds like a great idea, though. And booze."

He shot Elke a wink. "I won't tell." He'd drunk with her before, and she could hold her liquor better than he could.

Bo's shenanigans cheered her, for a reason she didn't need to deeply examine to understand. He was a Zodiac, like her. His heart beat to the same drum. His starseed resonated with hers, their princess bound them together. Finn was her friend, she loved him a lot (when he wasn't being an a*****e) but he wasn't Zodiac. And that distance could no more be crossed by friendship, even a friendship that had stretched a thousand years, than a river punt could take her to Mars.

"Gentlemen, are you conspiring to get me drunk," she said, but it was a weary joke. She would no more be in danger in Bo and Finn's company than she would be in her father's home. And salad sounded good. Actually, no, the oysters sounded good, but... She bit her lip until she tasted blood. Salad. There would be one. And if anyone tried to make issue, she would... She would. Uh.

They made it to Killian's, which was astonishingly quiet for a Friday night. Probably because of the fire and the power outage--Elke would be asleep by now if it hadn't been for that fight. Once they were seated at a corner table (Elke tucked herself into the corneriest chair at the table and dared both of them with a stare to say anything) she puffed out her cheeks and asked, "Why haven't you been answering my texts?" Because she had been texting.

To Finn, she said, "This is Bodhi Hanley. He's... A member of my astronomy club. I just realized I hadn't introduced you to him before. He surfs." And to Bo, she said, "Finn does rafting, I think. And camping." They should get along, she thought.

Bo glanced up to the lights when Finn indicated them. "Oh yeah," he said. It had only just occurred to him. Being inside the warehouse on fire had momentarily wiped his brain, apparently. Then, when Elke mentioned the two boys trying to get her drunk, he leaned in conspiratorially and echoed, "Oh yeah." He even gave her a little salute.

In no time at all, they made it to Killian's and to a corner table. Bo waved at a couple people who waved back, but it was unclear whether or not he actually knew them or was just being overly friendly. He took a seat beside Elke and had just dramatically unfurled his napkin when she was saying something about texts. "Texts? Me?" he said, glancing from Finn to Elke dramatically. "That doesn't sound anything like me. I am an excellent communicator." Then, after a breath: "In person. I know that I own a phone, but I do not, per se, know where that phone has been. It comes and it goes. I solemnly swear to locate it and text you until you beg me to stop post haste."

His track record was pretty godawful, to be honest. Bo could rarely be reached by phone anyway, didn't own a computer, and had a habit of not being at his apartment for days at a time. He was the kind of friend who was awesome when he was around you, but a ghost when he wasn't.

When Elke moved to introducing him to Finn, Bo welcomed the change of subject. "Ah, a fellow outdoor enthusiast," he said. "I like to hike the Sawmill Trail -- have you ever done beach camping? Beach camping is spectacular. Morning surfing, nighttime fire." Bo also did a lot of accidental camping, which happened when he was either too sleep or too drunk to make it back home and opted to sleep under the stars instead.

His life was not a glamorous one.

A waitress appeared, looking slightly surprised she had a table at all. "You guys got here fast after power came back," she said. "Some of the stuff isn't available -- oysters are all right, keep them on ice. But no, like, ice cream. Or whatever. Sauces we keep on heaters are still warming, that kind of thing." She reached into her apron and pulled out a pen. "Anyway, what'll you have?" The woman didn't actually take out paper to write it down on, just the pen. Weird.

Bo wasted no time in ordering two dozen oysters and a pitcher of the cheapest beer. "Your finest, cheapest ale," he said, giving her a wink, and then waited for Finn and Elke to place their own. There were laminated menus on the table, not that Bo had touched them. He apparently just assumed they would be ready to order when he was.

"The sawmill trail's great," said Finn, nodding enthusiastically as he reached for one of the laminated menus. Elke's coded reference to the Zodiacs didn't escape him, and he was glad to have confirmation that Neso was another member of her shattered court. They'd been coming out of the woodwork lately and he was glad to see them - any proof that Elke wasn't as alone as she thought she was.

"I've done a bit of beach camping, yeah," he said, "But I haven't really had a chance to since I got back from Alaska. Weather hadn't been right. Maybe this summer? Ocean kayaking's pretty fun from what I remember." He'd never exactly gotten a chance to try surfing - it kind of required a teacher. "Have you ever done the Pyrite Mine trail?"

This was, maybe, a conversation best had when they didn't have Elke nestled between them.

"Grilled cheese and fries?" he asked the waitress, and glanced at Elke, waiting for her to place her order. Post-battle food was sort of like drunk food, as far as he could tell: the greasier the better.

Bo's taste in oysters notwithstanding.

"I'm, uh, Finn Derouen," he added, because he'd skipped that part. He glanced at Elke, and decided that maybe the bit about being her past life's descendant was probably saved for a later meeting, or at least after they'd all had a few beers. "Not a member of the astronomy club. Obviously. But, hey, do you know White River Outfitters? Stop in sometime and I'll hook you up with a discount."

Sometimes Bo was a little worrying, she reflected. "If I got you a belt case, would you use it," she asked, but it wasn't really a serious question. She knew the answer already. If he even owned a belt, it would probably get left in his laundry, with his phone, and go right into the washing machine. If he did laundry, she thought, a little horrified but--well--there was a lot she could forgive for a Zodiac senshi. Even one that made her life a little impossible.

She listened to the camping and hiking discussion with a politely interested expression. Her idea of fun definitely did not involve sleeping on the ground, or in sleeping bags. She liked looking at art exhibits and movies, and--and going to the Surrounding and raking leaves, where 'raking leaves' meant 'keeping a lookout for monsters'. Did Bo ever do that? She considered her hands as the boys ordered, and then she said, "A salad, please," and the waitress asked about meat, and she shook her head and slid a little lower in her seat.

Elke ran her fingers through her hair, and tried to think of something to say. A lot had happened--one Negaverse general stabbing another, the stabbed general becoming a youma--and Elke was honestly still processing it. And she didn't want to talk about the whole ordeal with Persephone…

Except, yes, she did want to talk about something. The waitress came back around with their drinks and once she was gone, Elke said, "If either of you ever picks me up and carries me away from a battle without my permission again, I will skin you both. With my bare hands." And if she got a little teary, it was definitely only from secondhand embarrassment. "Are we clear?"

Hey, Elke. Bo does laundry. Laundry is when he goes swimming with his clothes on and leaves them out to dry on rocks. Or when he shakes out the stink from his crumpled clothing piles on the floor. He even sort-of irons! He gets his s**t wet and then puts heavy, flat stuff on top of it -- like his roommate's textbooks. =D

Anyway...

Bo was multitasking the various threads of conversation, primarily with head nods and upbeat phrases ("Right on!" and "Absolutely!") and not doing a whole lot of talking. Elke offered him a belt case, but dismissed the idea just as quickly as he did and then -- wait. WAIT. Had Finn just said... Alaska? Suddenly, Bo slammed his hand down on the table. The salt shaker jumped up and spilled over on its side.

Bright blue eyes were fixed squarely on Finn's face. He scooted his chair about a foot closer to him. "You just got back from ALASKA," Bo said -- several minutes after it had actually been said. "Alaska, man? Living the dream! You've got to tell me everything some time! Do you have pictures? You have to have pictures." A whoop of laughed rocketed out of him. And why not? Whenever people asked Bo about his future life plans, he vaguely answered something about going off to Alaska to just see it all. It was not a plan with much merit, but it was the constant dream that Bo Hanley touted to have.

And here was a boy who had lived it!

Unfortunately, he had made the choice to have this Alaska outburst moments after Elke said the serious thing about not wanting to be carried away from battle.

...which he noticed just a moment later. Swinging his head over his shoulder, he gave Elke a bashful look. "I will only sweep you into my arms romantically, from this day forward," he said, giving her what he thought was the Boy Scouts salute.

The waitress appeared again with a pitcher of beer, three pint glasses, and three waters. Bo tilted beer into each of the three glasses and then passed those to Elke and Finn. He lifted his into the air. "What shall we cheers to, comrades?"

Finn would have loved to go straight into talking with Bo about Alaska, which was honestly his favorite topic ever and he missed the place like woah, but Elke's interjection was honestly a little bit more important. Well, okay, a lot. A lot more important. "Sorry, Elke," he said. "Just got a little freaked out back there. I won't do it again."

Bo, he thought, would be cute with Elke. Maybe they'd be good for each other.

He gave Elke a quick look, just to make sure they were okay, and then, with great ceremony, dug his phone out of his front pocket. "Do I ever," he said, grinning at Bo as he held the phone across the table. "I was at UA Fairbanks studying Wildlife Conservation. So these are some huskies at a kennel linked to our program, and this is a botanical garden on campus, and these here are all from a hiking trip I went on last fall before I came back to Destiny City."

He realized at that point that he'd pretty much forced Elke into the corner by leaning across her, and did his best to back off. "I'll show you more of these later," he said apologetically, sitting back. Setting his phone aside, he reached for one of the glasses of beer.

"To each others' continued survival," he suggested. There wasn't a whole lot you could feel optimistic about toasting after a night like the one they'd all had, and Finn would have felt odd suggesting the Zodiacs seeing as he wasn't a member.

For something to do during the talk of Alaska, Elke righted the salt shaker and swept the granules into a neat pile, and shifted the menus around to the other side of the table so she didn't really have to look at them, and eventually leaned back so Finn and Bo could look at pictures of dogs and gardens and glaciers and forests. They were astoundingly beautiful, and they made her think of Babylon. Or as close to Babylon as one could get on Earth. Maybe she really ought to look into running away to study wildlife conservation in Alaska. It had done wonders for Finn's outlook. The Babylon knight she remembered hadn't been so... Sanguine, about everything.

Bo, maybe he as a fixed point in the universe. The romantic sweeping-up as going to take a minute to percolate. She lifted her glass as Finn did and said, "I can agree with that," she said. Continued survival was sort of her only accomplishment.

With each picture, Bo had the same basic reaction: "All right, man!" or "Killer, killer..." A quiet awe fell over him, and he suddenly knew that Finn was here and would never forgot again (probably). "Definite raincheck," he whispered. Did he mean it? In his heart, yes. Would he remember? Probably would the next time he saw Finn, if that happened, which he hoped it would.

With his glass raised, Bo called out, "Here, here!" and clunked his beer into both of theirs, sloshing a bit of foam over the side. He tilted it to his lips, drained half the glass, and slammed it down on the table with equal festivity. "So, that," he said, leaning back in his chair, "was a thing. What was that, you think, a halfsies? It seemed like a halfsies being metamorphosed in front of us out of that angry German dude." The bar was pretty deserted and the one waitress (theirs) was sitting on a stool, eating what appeared to be her own dinner. "Trippy." He drank again, trying to picture the strange creature in his head but only really defining blobs of color.

"A halfsies?" asked Finn, wiping foam off his mouth with his wrist. It took him a moment to figure out what exactly Bo meant, but then the bit about angry German dude made things go faintly transparent. "Yeah," he said, taking another sip of his beer. For cheap stuff it was pretty decent-tasting, and at least it was cold. After fighting inside a burning warehouse, that was as much as Finn could really ask for.

(Why were there always warehouses? Why were they always one fire?)

"That would appear to have been a halfsies," he nodded. Because those were a thing. A thing that happened. ******** s**t. "He's not going to, I don't know, grow twenty feet and carpet-bomb us from orbit like Tanzanite, is he?"

Because, if that was the case, he sort of wished Avalon had finished the job. Anyway, he wasn't exactly sure whether Tanzanite was still a thing that existed - he'd heard neither hind nor hair of her since his return from Alaska, and that was probably for the better.

"Anyway, s**t," he said, glancing briefly towards the basket of rolls that had just arrived at their table. "Chaos is a hell of a drug, huh?"
