How many days, weeks, months had it been since he had wandered away into war? It felt like only hours to the Master, however.. Hrmph, Master, some Master he was.. Off the battle field, peddling his wares as a merchant, there was no one better. He was fantastic, able to unload anywhere with his slick words and charms. But there's no one to charm on the battle field. There were no words there, other than the commands shouted by his battalion leader.

"MARCH! CHARGE! RETREAT" over and over again he had heard those words, the seeped deep into his bones where even now, as he lied in who knows where. He wanted to get up, to keep moving, but what use was bound up? And arm was strapped to his chest, splinted in place so that it would reset again, that much he could tell. It wasn't as if he had never broken a bone before. But what horrid of a cut had he received on his head that everything above his nose was bound?

Using his good hand, he reached up to gently touch the bandages, trying to figure out what exactly was wrong, but nothing seemed to make sense of it all.. What had even happened out there to cause this to happen? The last he could remember was a shout. Was it his own? Was it someone he had been forced to cut down? Either way, he was here now, so that meant he had survived. Bandaged, broken, but in good spirits! But damn, was he parched..

"Hello?" His voice called out into the darkness, though whether or not is was actually dark, he didn't know. Hopefully there was someone out there who was on patrol for patients in what he assumed was a medicine tent. At the end of his bed was his name from the warrior roster. Giconi Igg, not the name he went by for trading. Trading meant nothing here, only your performance on the field.

Being a Healer at a time like this one was quite exhausting, there were so many in need of his help that he felt he wasn't sleeping as much these days. It wasn't something that he could really complain about though, there were those who had it far worse then he did after all. So he was busy, so what? Those who fought, those who were injured, those who died, those were the ones that should actually be complaining but strangely enough there were a lot of them who weren't so much as complaining as just raring to get back to defending their homelands from the invaders. It was something that he couldn't help but to be impressed by.

Makani had taken a small break to get himself some water and a bit of food, breathing in the air outside the medical tents that he had found himself in so often, but he'd barely begun to eat when a woman was approaching him. He found himself getting briefed on the new patient, one who was 'right up his alley' and 'in need of Makani's help most of all' amongst other things that made him a little supicious about what the woman meant. When she finally told him he couldn't help but to feel a bit shocked. Blinded? He supposed he had some expertise in the matter but there was a bit difference between blind from birth and blinded by an attack. Not to mention that he had his magic to guide him in a way that some people couldn't understand. Still... he had to agree at least that he would understand the patient more then more could.

He was led to the tent that this particular patient was waiting in and stepped inside just as a voice called out to him. It was a sound that caused him to freeze in place for a moment, his mind whirling. The voice... sounded familiar... but he couldn't quite place it. Perhaps if the man said more? Walking forward toward him he said, "I'm here now, how can I help?" If only he could actually help but he supposed he would do what he could, right? He just hoped that it was enough in the end he thought to himself as he came to kneel down beside his newest patient.

The voice that spoke back to the Master wasn't familiar in the least. It was young, but that was about as much as he could pull out from it. A young voice, who smelled of blood. Then again, HE smelled of blood, so the scent of anything honestly didn't matter at all. But the Master did relax at the sound of his voice. It was kind, so atleast that meant he wasn't captured. Not like the enemy could have gotten any information from the old man in the first place. It should be safe to hinder the boy with questions.

"If I may ask, Where am I? What happened at the battle I was in? How long have I been out? How is the war going? And most of all, why is this confound bandage on my head?! Did I take an axe to the skull? That would give me one hellava scar to show my boy when I get back to him. Is there any word from my son as well? A letter or some such? The boy's name is Lusala. It should have come from the Master of Names Trading Company as well."

The old man knew right then if Lusala's mail came from anywhere else, then the boy had abandoned his post. Unfortunately, he would not know, but there was no mail from the boy.. There was nothing for him except a long journey back to the Harbor where the Trading company was located at.

Makani tilted his head to the side as the man started to speak, asking him a lot of questions, to the point where he almost felt as though he couldn't answer them all. Where he was, what happened to the battle he was in, how long he'd been out, how the war was going and many, many others. There were things in what he was saying though that first made him worried and then made his mouth drop open in utter shock. He... he didn't know? They hadn't told him? He had thought he was coming here to help him to deal with the fact that he had lost his sight but those who had worked with him to this point hadn't even told him?! They had dropped it on his shoulders!?

If that wasn't shock enough something else that he said made it seem for a moment as though the world had gone topsy turvy on him. He had spoke of his son, of Lusala, and it became clear why the voice sounded familiar. This was Lusala's father, the man that had made friends with Makani's father, someone he knew, and he couldn't help but to tear up a little. Yet another very unfair thing done by those of Oba, another thing that they had destroyed that they could never fix no matter what happened, yet another reason for him to never look kindly upon them no matter what he should do as a healer. He couldn't help but to feel angry at them despite the fact that he knew healers weren't supposed to differentiate, that they were supposed to help everyone no matter what.

Reaching out he searched for a moment before he found and took the man's hand in both of his, giving it a squeeze, before he said, "I... I'm sorry... I didn't know that they hadn't told you already and... I don't know where to start." He wished someone else was here, wished Lusala or his father Herluin was here, even Eira might be able to help more then he felt he could, "Let me see... what have you asked thus far. Where we are is Neued, it's in Southern Jauhar. I wish I could say how long you have been out but I am not sure, the days have been blurring together of late. The war... the war is... over at the moment at least, our people were forced to retreat." He felt a bit like some sort of doomsayer and that wasn't even the worst of what he was to tell the man.

"I... I can't say what sort of wound you have." He said, lifting one hand to let it hover in front of the bandage, allowing his magic to flow through the wound, to get a better feel for it. It felt traumatic, that much he could tell, "I... feel that you are right, there will likely be a scar but... I am afraid that isn't all. I was told about it and it seems that has fallen to me to tell you... that your wound, what it took from you, it's permanent." How he hated this, that they would drop this into his lap. He didn't know what the wound was like, how the man had gotten it, but they had left him to tell him! Just because he was blind himself didn't make it easier to tell someone else that they too were blind now he thought to himself in a very displeased manner. Cowards, all of them, and here he was left to pick of the pieces as they ran away. All he wanted to do was enfold the older man into his arms, to hug him, to try to make it better even though he knew he couldn't.

"Hadn't told me what?" The hands that took his own just felt.. Wrong. They were rougher than the soft voice implied. the sound of his voice, his sent.. It was all wrong. He sounded so sad, disheartened. How he wanted to just pull him into his arms and make sure everything was alright. The voice must have been just a kid after all. Kids didn't deserve to see war.

Even as he spoke,as the kid delivered more and more bad news, the old man could only smile sadly, nodding as squeezing the young man's hand. Was he scared? No. Only worried.

"Ah.. Well, such is life, right..? You win some, you lose some, and sometimes, you lose even more than you think.. But.. I guess that means I can finally go home." He chuckled sadly a bit about that. What was a home when you were a traveling merchant? "Well, to my son, anyway, to my Lusala.. That boy.. He's been trying so hard to keep up with the work. Huh.. How will I get home..? Damn, how am I even going to.. I had no regrets coming into this, kid. None at all, because you think that you're invincible, But when it is all said and done, you find out you regret so much.. "

He laughed a bit, his hand coming up to press at the bandages on his eyes. They were gone.. What else was gone..?

"Do you know when I can leave? And if I can get an escort back to the trading post closes to the Sauti/Zena border? My son should be there.. "

Makani wasn't sure what he thought about the way that the man was taking the news. Shouldn't he be more upset? Shouldn't he be mad? Want to curse about it? Instead he just said 'such was life' and that he could 'finally go home'. It was a little sad if you asked him but maybe, due to the injuries, he just wanted to get back to Lusala? It was probably easier to deal with such things when one had family around. As the other continued to talk Makani's mind started to race with each question the guy asked, until he found himself wondering exactly how the man was going to get home as well... after a moment he said, "I have an idea. I will send word to my father, he is nearby, having fought in the war as well. I am sure he will be able to help get you back. I would offer myself but the blind leading the blind... I fear we might not get anywhere."

Sure, he was able to see with his magic, but that was still only to a degree. There was too much danger out there for him to risk another person's life on the off chance that he might be able to lead the way. He felt that he needed so much more practice before he even attempted to go out into the world on his own... or at least somewhat on his own, he'd always have Rae after all. Even now the Raptrix was waiting for him just outside the tent, ready to aid him if he needed help.

"Hm, well you did get wake up, so perhaps you should rest up until my father gets here? I will send word straight away, but given how things are at the moment it could take a little while." The time it took would just give the man more time to rest though, which was likely a good thing. There was a moment he almost felt excited over knowing where Lusala was but he pushed that thought aside, not wanting to focus on him. He was here as a healer, was here for this man, he couldn't worry about Lusala right now he scolded himself as he got to his feet, "Let me see about getting a message sent to my father then I will return. Can I get you anything while I am out?" Provisions were a little lower then one would like but there were at least something held back for the patients.

"You'd ask your father to help me? You are a kind boy, that is for certain. I will make sure you and your father are paid well for assisting me." How strange was that? Suddenly offered to be taken home by a medic he had hardly known for five minutes. He was in no position to be stubborn and refuse, not when he had his son suffering and waiting for him. The old man wouldn't let him suffer more.

"You, too, are blind? Ah.. I knew of a little lad that my son was enamored with who was blind too. A good little one, he was. And his father.. Well, I couldn't say much about it, it's been so long, I doubt they'd remember me. For now, I think I'll just wait, like you said. I don't need anything. Maybe just a bit more sleep, until my strength is back, atleast." With his own, large hand he patted Makani's, hand.

"Lad, what is your name? I'd like to know who to thank for all of this, in the very least."
PostPosted: Sat May 31, 2014 6:35 pm

Makani gave a bit of a smile, "Well, I know the memories are a little vague for me, but my father seemed to like you well enough. I know he can sometimes be a difficult man to make friends with, he's very stubborn and single minded, but still, he enjoyed the time the two of you spent together a lot." He told the man sitting with, wanting him to know that it would be alright. If anyone would be willing to help out as far as the Merchant master went it would be Herluin! At least that was how Makani felt.

Makani gave pause, feeling as if the world had slowed down around him, his cheeks going hot at the mention of Lusala being 'enamored' by him. It was something that he hadn't thought possible, he hadn't been able to meet with the guy again and pretty well figured that his childhood crush would have forgotten all about him. It wouldn't seem as though it were so though, huh? Maybe Lusala did think about him from time to time? It really was a nice thought he decided, giving a bit of a smile, "Ahh! Yes, you should focus on sleep. Once I get word from my father I will let you know." He shouldn't be keeping him at attention when he really should be resting, it was selfish of him and selfish wasn't a word that was supposed to be used when talking about a healer.

Giving a bit of a smile as he was about to head out he said, "My name is Makani." He found himself wondering if the guy would recall his name. Who knew, but if he did Makani would be happy, "I will check on you again soon, to see how you are doing. I have a few more rounds to make." With that he was on his way. He would see about getting the letter sent out to his father, go on his rounds, then return to check on his patient again. He knew why the man was given to him to take care but it didn't mean that he was pleased with the those who had handed him off. He would just have to do his best to take care of him until he was able to find Lusala who could probably be of a better help since he was the man's son.

"You know me? Ah.. I'm sorry, I cannot place your voice.." The Old man wasn't as forgetful as his son was. He could remember the people he met, the people he had connected with and enjoyed the company of. It could be said that he had met alot of people that fit the description of a man that the healer gave. Many men were cold and uncaring, but that was part of being a good merchant, being able to worm their way into a village's heart, and ensure they are welcome for future times. Of course, he wasn't as shallow as his son, he meant for these connections to last, for the mutual benefit of all who came in contact with one another.

"You went silent for a moment, young one.. Perhaps you should get some rest too. It must be incredibly stressful for you, having to deal with everyone in states such as mine.. Don't push yourself, that would only make things harder." The Master had learned from such things himself, hence he wasn't trying to burst forth from bed as they spoke. Instead, he began to drift, attempting to keep his attention on the young man before him, but finding it hard to do so when there was no vision for him.

If his eyes could open, then they would have widened in surprise at the name that was given, however, and it seemed to wake him back up again.

"Makani.." He knew the name, but it couldn't be. He was far too away from home.. And the last time he had seen the lad, he was but a wee child, barely big enough to reach the wheels on his cart. Before he could mention anything else, the young land was on his way, having left him alone on his cot once more. No matter.. They would be able to talk again soon enough..

Makani had gone to a messenger straight away, giving him the message that he needed to take down and then deliver to his father. He also told the man where Herluin should be at this time, leaving him to head off on his way. He was eager to get the letter back, wanting to be able to get his father here sooner then later, wanting to be able to help the merchant master back to Lusala. It wasn't for selfish reasons either, even if he would like to visit his old friend again. It was also because he was more then certain that at this moment what the man needed most was his son. He'd been through something awful, would need to relearn so many things, it would be difficult but surely with help he'd make it through. To get to that help though they needed Herluin. He could only hope that the message got to him quickly.

It took a couple days but the hunter finally arrived, seeking out his son amongst the many healers that were working with the wounded, sighing when he saw him, "You look like you need some rest, Makani." He said, reaching out his hands to rest them against his son's cheeks, looking him over. He had dark circles under his, his hair was pulled back but unkempt, he looked as though he hadn't slept in days and who knew if he'd been eating. The state he was in wasn't one that pleased Herluin in the least, "You should take a break."

Makani lifted his hands up, resting them over that of his father, and smiled, "I thank you for the concern but I can rest just yet, not when so many others need me. One in particular though needs you as well, father. Can I bring you to him? He's a friend of yours."

"Friend of mine?" Herluin actually sounded confused. There weren't a lot of people that he liked well enough that he might actually consider them a friend making him wonder who it was that Makani had found that needed him. He shook his head before he saying, "How about you lead me to him, alright?" He told his son, releasing his hold on him, and fell into step with him as Makani moved to lead the way to where the patient was being kept for observation. He wasn't the worst amongst the wounded nor was he in the best of shape, it was why Makani was assigned to him, to make sure he didn't hurt himself.

"Through here." He said, stepping inside the tent and called out, "Master Giconi, it's me, Makani, I'm back! And I have my father with me." Once he'd announced that they were there he walked across the tent, kneeling down next to where the wounded man was located with Herluin following close behind, his eyes going wide upon seeing which 'friend' was sitting there.

It was man he hadn't seen in some time and hadn't really thought he'd see again, not exactly a friend but he wouldn't tell Makani that, not when he'd had him come all the way here to meet with the man, "Hello there Giconi, it's been a while." He said, settling down on the other side of the injured man, across from Makani. Giconi, huh? Well at least he finally knew the man's name and no longer had to refer to him as 'merchant' since the man insisted upon being called 'Master' which Herluin refused to call him.

The moment Makani left his side, Giconi was gone, losing consciousness faster than he realized. Through the few days that he waited for the mysterious man to come, he hardly changed his state, waking every now and then to chat with the young doctors and nurses who came to talk to him. He ate, and slept. And occasionally got up to walk. His legs felt heavy, but the sooner he became used to his own weight again, the sooner he could see his boy.

When they had arrived in his tent, he sat up, actually conscious this time. Deep in his bones he felt that today was the day. The scent was so different than the blood and salty meat he had become used to. It was fresh, and familiar.. And then the man spoke. He had never before hear his name spoken from the voice he had dreamed of for so many nights since that first trip to Zena. He could just feel his eyes struggling to open, trying to see the man who he wanted to see almost more than his own son.

"Herluin.. Ah.. I'm sorry you have to see me like this." For the first time since he had met either of them, his voice was soft, almost scared to be seen in such a weakened state. When they had first met, he wanted to seem strong and dependable to him, someone he could trust.. Someone who could take care of him and his young child.. But the way the world worked, he never made it back their village. As soon as he had the time to see him, he was pulled into a war he cared nothing about, but to spare his own son from having to fight in his stead..

"It's been such a long time.. And you've come all this way to help me. I will make sure you are rewarded for such a feat.." He couldn't laden his adoration and joy on Heruin right now. Maybe he wasn't even wanted around here. And that meant that this Makani was the wee one that Lusala had thought of for such a long time.. It was as if their worlds were finally becoming whole again, even if it meant his eyes as payment.
