Rin waited by her door patiently, a large pail full of various supplies in her hand. She wondered if she could really trust the new guy with her babies, but frankly the newest mission proved it to be a good idea to train someone to care for her plants. Who knows when all your skin would be burned off by Cael? Then who's going to keep all the plants from dying horribly? Better safe than sorry, she assured herself.

True to his word, Noah turned up promptly a few minutes after his last tweet, having changed into his oldest jeans and a very faded t-shirt that was starting to develop holes at the neckline; he obviously knew that he was going to get dirty. His eyes went to the missing arm, rested on the shoulder for a moment, then skittered back to her face; the burning curiosity was evident on his face, but, with an effort of will, he suppressed it. "I'm Noah," he stated, probably unnecessarily. "You wanted some help with your planting? Oh," he said, as if struck with belated realization, couldn't help looking at the missing arm again, and then made himself stop looking. "Sorry," he squeaked, going bright red.

Rin handed Noah the bucket full of supplies, "here." She had noticed his wandering eyes, but chose to let it go the first time. The second time, however... "I'm Rin and I take it you want to know how I lost this?" she pointed at her partially-vacant sleeve.

Noah took the bucket, but actually jumped at the question. "Uh," he said intelligently. "Yes, er no, I mean, um, I'm sorry, I was trying not to stare, it's none of my business or anything, sorry, I'll shut up," and he ducked his head, embarrassed.

Rin bent down real slow, her hand sliding to rest on her knee as if she were about to speak to a small child despite the fact Noah was taller than her, even hunkered down into a safety ball as he was.
"I'm going to fill you in on a very important secret," she suppressed a smirk with all her might. "You know Rep? Giant muscular red head with a mini Scotsman servant?" Time to mess with the new guy. "Don't ever piss him off." Her intense pale gray eyes stared directly into Noah's.

"Uh huh, I know him," Noah agreed. His eyes went very wide at the warning. Had he narrowly missed actual dismemberment in one of his first few spars? He remembered the look on Rep's face when the guy had told him to quit pressing his luck, and concluded that maybe he had.
"Okay," he squeaked in a very small voice, going pale.

Rin reached out to pat Noah with her remaining hand a bit too roughly before standing straight again, "good boy. Can't have my assistant crawling around as just a head now."
She flashed a toothy grin, cracking finally, though the illusion was set deep enough she was sure it would not effect it.
"Okay now, let's get to work."

The pat and reassurance made Noah's eyes go even wider, if that was possible, and his grip on the handle of the bucket go tighter. He had been accused of gullibility on Twitter. This was clearly quite true. Rin's grin indeed did not dispel the impression she had given. "Okay," Noah squeaked again, regaining some volume but not any apparent confidence. "Just, just show me where."

Rin brushed past Noah and took the lead on a journey outside of the dorms, outside of the walls of Deus and down carefully marked paths until eventually she reached the aged greenhouse that had clearly been updated and repaired. She had come a long way since the run down dump with nothing but a watering can and dead plants.
"Melvin helped me bring this up from the mess it once was," which was made pretty apparent by the spotless concrete floors, counters, and even the greenhouse windows themselves. She unlocked the door and held it open for Noah. Inside, he would find half the greenhouse to be in the process of being converted to hydroponics while the other half was entirely manual still. There were shelves full of books on the subject of plants, from the cellular level to how to deter pests. But most importantly, the plants were flourishing.

Noah followed Rin obediently, taking note of where they were going. He had a good memory, if nothing else. The greenhouse she led him to wasn't new, but it had been repaired and attended to; he could see through the bright, clear windows that the interior was immaculately clean. That was impressive. "Wow." He set the bucket of supplies down inside; with a quick look at Rin for permission, he walked up and down the rows, getting a good look at the operation. Some of it was manual, some of it was hydroponic, and he could see signs that the conversion was ongoing. The plants themselves were green and healthy, no pests anywhere, and the greenhouse smelled right, earth and water and green growing things in proper balance. In the work area, shelves of books sat, texts and manuals, instructional and informational. " Awesome." Noah grinned brightly at Rin, cracking his knuckles in anticipation. He was going to get his hands into the dirt again. "What are we repotting today?"

"Before we do anything fun," yes that was Rin's idea of fun. "We need to do basic care. Today is fertilizer day so take this," she led Noah over to a pile of bags with large black cows on the packaging. "and fill about 2 cups to every full watering can. Swish then water everything but," she led him further along a row to indicate a few trays of extremely small plants that are soaking. "These are the guys we'll be moving today. I'll be helping every step of the way though so don't stress." She was used to Melvin assistance which was extremely fretful.
She moved back to the bags and filled a watering can from a barrel with a spigot. Satisfied, she offered the prepared can to Noah so he had premixed to start with for his first go round. She prepared a second can for herself. "Meet in the middle?"

"Got it. We're using cow manure?" Noah asked, taking the can. "I mean, there's no animals on the island so I guess you gotta bring it in, but no sheep or goat? Rabbit or bird is probably cost-prohibitive if you're not buying in bulk ... do you have a compost pile going yet? I bet the cafeteria produces plenty of organic waste that we could be recycling." He moved along the rows, carefully nudging the spout of the watering can under the leaves and saturating the soil evenly in each pot. "Which side of the greenhouse gets more light?" He looked up at the windows, analyzing the layout of the surrounding land. "Are you planting anything outdoors after getting it started here, or is everything you're growing staying here? No, you've got to have another location, right," he answered himself. "This isn't enough space for a good variety of vegetables unless you're getting really specialized. Are you growing any berries? I bet you could get good money for strawberries or blueberries around here." He put the empty watering can down and petted the leaves of the plant he'd just watered, much like another person might gently stroke the ears of a kitten and giving it a smile just as affectionate.

Rin laughed delightedly. She most certainly landed herself a trainee; so full of hope, determination, new ideas, and ...questions. "Calm down you, one question at a time. You're starting to sound like Melvin at mach two."
"Yes, it's cows. Unfortunately anything else is very difficult to source or I'd love rabbit. I am also uncertain if the fear of this island would kill worms... I was thinking red wigglers if not, but I have yet to ask a higher-up."
At the compost question she was a bit surprised she hadn't thought of it yet. But at the same time, she was a bit more focused on converting to a more automated system. "That can be your homework," more hands was very useful.
"Unfortunately..," Rin started, shifting the subject quite a bit. "Before you came along, this whole island used to be trapped in a barrier. It caused the entire island to fill up with a dark oppressive mist. It was full of fear and because of it this greenhouse was invaluable. It also worked purely on artificial lighting due to the lack of a sun. I lost a little under half of my plants when that barrier opened up releasing the mist. My plants were not used to real sunlight or that sort of heat and humidity. I'm still terrified of moving anything outside though, in case residual fear would corrupt those plants. What you're looking at is it, but it is also the biggest collection you will find on the island. I'd like to expand it further, but I need to ensure what I have is stable and doing well again first."
Yes, she felt quite defensive about the implication that her greenhouse was teeny weenie.
"I'm also experimenting at the same time, okay. Specifically with micropropagation. But that will come later, after the plants have been tended with their needs for the day."
She emptied her own can as well, equally as carefully before going over to fill the can up with water again, "time for the next row!" Noah really didn't think he was done after one can did he?
"I hope to one day have a greenhouse built for each kind of environment. Like a rain forest or a prairie," she was gushing just a bit okay. "Have at least one of every plant, that would be amazing." But it was far away. "Until then, I need to focus on what I have, which is a lot. I'm quite proud of what my precious babies have accomplished here." She mirrored his gesture and gave a small patch of cilantro a stroke. "As for berries, yes, I have several varieties - both wild and domestic. Not all of it is fruiting right now though."

"Would they die or mutate? Probably not good for the plants ... I wonder why Fear affects animals but not plants. Is it the presence of a brain or some other factor? A nervous system, a circulatory - no, it can't be circulatory, plants have the vascular system, that's close enough that that can't be it. It's got to be some higher function. Somebody must have already studied this, I can't believe nobody would, I'll ask the library." Noah trotted back to mix a fresh watering can full of fertilizer. "Okay! Where would be a good place for me to build a bin, and who do I ask to get materials?" He grinned brightly, apparently excited by the prospect of having a project. He listened intently as he continued along the row, glancing rapidly back and forth between Rin and the plants. "Oh, I see," he said thoughtfully, missing the defensive tone completely. "That makes sense. Wow, then we must be importing like everything we eat, no wonder the veggies in the cafeteria are so crappy, they must be canned." The last word held a kind of scandalized horror at the thought. "What kind of growth medium are you using for the micropropagation?" he asked with interest. "I've never had a chance to be involved with that, I was hoping to get the opportunity in college, but they wouldn't have let me have any hands on for ages, this is awesome." "The plants look great," he agreed. "Really healthy. This is all you and Melvin? That's, like, super impressive."

"I would assume, but not so much lately. I just don't want to risk it yet, not with so much room for improvement here. It affects both, but when you think about fear... think about how it effected you back home? Heart racing, adrenaline pumping, everything in overdrive. I imagine it's like that all the time for animals only it eventually consumes them. We're protected. Bugs seem to have some degree of protection too along with the plants. I'm not entirely sure what yet though... but I've been warned against any fear experiments on plant life. I intend to heed it. It seems a bit cruel anyway."
She bobbed her head along thoughtfully before admitting, "you may be right though, could be the brains?"
"As for the compost, any free space along the wall should suffice. I'm not sure where you would get materials, that will be part of the homework. Worse comes to worse, you can always pick things up on leave," she gestured at a few possible places, especially near the water barrel. "You are also welcome to pick up seeds of anything you wish to grow and plant them here."
She nodded in agreement with Noah's horror, "indeed. Everything in the cafeteria is either from a can or some sort of frozen, thawed, ground mystery meat. We do get supplies that are more fresh fairly frequently but that gets used up quickly by higher ranked hunters." She shuddered, "that goes to s**t though any time the portals go down. I relied on my surviving plants last time, in fact. I am terrible at advertising though so it was mainly me, Melvin, and William who got the benefits."
"At present I buy and use Murashige and Skoog medium when I'm on leave as I lack the funds for anything even close to an autoclave for my own. It's a very very small project at the present."
