Around the Campfire #2 - Crossroads

The morning was still young, the sun still awakening to warm the earth. After the chaos that had just taken place, there were still things to be done before they could leave. All the tents had to be taken down, and all the corpses of the risen gathered and cremated at a suitable distance from the camp. Whoever those men once were, they were ancient warriors without a doubt and victims of a terrible curse.

But more than that, the group had to wonder: what were they going to do? Rath had yet to say anything. With no clear direction, the group decided to have breakfast while they can and share their thoughts around the campfire.

Is it not possible to go through Adliana without getting attacked by hordes of undead? Seriously? Just about every time the Fire Dragon had entered this country, the guild had had to engage in combat with zombie troops.

There were obviously powerful, perverse forces against the guild and its allies.

Adliana: Zombie Paradise.

With Learania's allies endangered as they were, swift action on the part of the guild and its companions was imminent. FD, who often kept to himself during breakfast, was around the campfire just like everyone else.

In spite of how grave the current situation was, though, the dragon couldn't help but look at the recent combat and be impressed with some of the teamwork on display during it. Being in close proximity to the Sentrians with their group who were now biting off more than they probably intended to chew, as often seemed to be the case when traveling this this group of otherworlders, he started conversing with them the same way he had the last time everyone was around the campfire. "Our Sentrian companions,

"Your teamwork in battle is very impressive; some of the best I've seen in my life. And I've been living a long, long time."

Though the thoughts of the Fire Dragon had been meant to be literal, moments before his acknowledgement of the trio, Amir had indeed physically bitten off more than he could chew. But how could he not? Moments after a battle like that, the bruises and the cuts seemed to weigh down his body, dryness burned his throat, but the bread that he brought to his lips felt like life itself brought down to such a simple form. It was as if a deaf man was hearing a symphony for the first time, and he was certainly eating as such.

The fact that it was unbecoming of him as a prince could wait, it could wait for the whole three. They had fought furiously, and earned it without question. ...That is until some of it happened to go down all the wrong ways, causing him to throw himself into a coughing fit. Thankfully, by the time that he had been addressed, the prince had been able to make himself presentable without notice. Though looking at the one who called to him almost made him want to throw himself back into a coughing fit, a reaction that he was able to reel back at notice of his words.

"...And I thank you for your praise. Teamwork like that is the result of many a hour together, time which I'm happy that I've been blessed with. Though I had to say, I was...rather taken back the first time I saw your transformation. It certainly blew us out of the water, at least from my standing."

He dotted his sentence with light laughter, inviting their guest to take a spot with the trio. "But that was then, and this is now. Come, join us for the moment, so that we can at leas
t talk."

“Yes,” the Fire Dragon took Amir’s invitation and took a place among the Sentrians, “moments for conversing, even in times as dire as these, perhaps especially in such times, are precious and needed. Thank you for the company.”

FD seized a momentary respite to eat some of his breakfast before continuing. “I should imagine your many hours together have been a great boon to you all, of course. And most people in this world find the revelation of my natural form…” what word to use? FD felt a need to navigate his choice of words wisely “Impactful.”

“I take it Sentria doesn’t have a village where humans and dragons live together and have a grand old time?” the dragon joked with a good-spirited laugh.

Except not. Since it wasn’t just a joke. FD really was legitimately fascinated by the idea and possibility of a desert village like the one Nils often spoken of with FD named Arcadia. Even if various lands merely had folklore or legends of something even remotely similar, even if more mirage than reality.

Julia

The sounds of plates and bowls scrapped by spoons by ravenous members of party were left behind by the advancing Pegasus knight, catching and replacing bowls that she tipped in her single-set goal. Her target wasn't anywhere in sight, and after a day like today...She was frustrated, hungry, and fairly cross. One doesn't just dump herself on a Pegasus of all things and then bolt before the rider can get a simple word in. She handled herself well off the battlefield, but off the battlefield...Julia just wanted to rip her hair out just thinking about it! The flicker of firelight brought her attention to the illuminated features of a certain nomad, right in the middle of stuffing her face after a several-day trip.

A finger was jab in the stranger's direction, as she hadn't even given a name during the event, before what she had been bottling in for the past hour spilled out. "Of all the...Pigheaded things! Nomad or not, has anyone ever taught you not to just leap onto a Pegasus? If Calliope hadn't let you on previously, do you know what kind of damage she could have done? It was irresponsible, fool-hardy...And..." She let out a frustrated sigh, rubbing the back of her head as she sat down and took a bowl. "You handled yourself fairly well. As mad as I am, you should at least hear that."

Omgerd, when was the last time Kalilah actually sat down and ATE. She ran for four freaken days with no food and barely any water on her so of course the crazy swordswoman is goign to be starving. As soon as the battle ended Kalilah collapsed to the floor unable to move or anything. You could say she was perhaps forgotten for a little bit until food was made.

Oooh it smelled so good. The smell of roasted meat made her mouth water. She should know her manners, yea, she knew that...HOWEVER....Kalilah still dove into the food like a hungry pack of wovles..in fact...SHE WAS HUNGRY.

The swordswoman was too busy stuffing her face to realize that the pegasus knight who had saved her earlier came up to talk to her. She looked up, cheeks filled with food like a chipmunk with a large blank stare. Most of the things she heard were probably drowned out by her chewing her food. Pegasus, Damage, Fool, that was aaaaall she heard. Kalilah put the food that was in her hands down and swallowed what she was currently chewing, just in time to hear the clear words of 'you handled yourself pretty well out there'

Kalilah formed a large smile on her face and was glad she could be of some help. "Only because you were a really good ride" Scratching her head, now thinking that jumping straight on teh pegasus after running all those times PROBABLY wasn't such a good idea, but hey, they were still alive. " And..Yeeaaaaa sorry about that" Mind your manners, Kalilah. Shouldn't be eating like a barbarian in the first place, you were taught better!

As much as the Nomad was beratting herself for her manners, Julia wasn't exactly an exemplary example herself. Years of mercenary work in a frozen country doesn't quite prepare you for proper dinner manners, especially when you have few moments of rest. "I'd say pardon my manners, but that would say I'm sorry." She commented, taking in a large swig of the beverage offered to her after practically engulfing a slab of meat. "Way things are, who knows how much rest we're going to get. Storming a fortress one day, ambushed by the undead the next. Though if I were to gauge it...It feels like a year since we've set off."

[OOC: ಠ_ಠ]

"So feel free to eat like you were. I'm not judging." She replied, with as much grace as she bothered to supply before turning towards her budding friend. "So for right now, you're a pass in my book. But only if you don't put on any of those airs around me. Up front and honest, ya?"

OOh! Lady approves! This made Kalilah happy but as long as she doesn't get on erh bad side, then everything is all well and good. She made a new friend, yay! But then something hit her. Kalilah's eyes grew wide and she suddenly stood up without a warning with a pretty loud 'WAH' echoing through the camp. She clenched her hands in a fist and looked Julia directly in the eyes. "I never introduced myself!!!!" she shouted. What was the customs in Learania for a greeting? A hug? Pat on the back? Handshake? Handshake. She grabbed Julia's hand and shook it up and down, taking note not to spill the beverage the pegasus knight was drinking. "I'm Kalilah and I am 100% Honest! No secrets here! biggrin "

At first she thought the Nomad was just about to deck her, something that she almost didn't rule out for a fun time, before a hand was extended to grasp her own. Confusion was apparent on her features before she recognized it as a handshake, something that she hadn't done in years. Most would have just extended their arm to strike wrists, but this was an almost pleasant change. She could get used to the customs of this realm. "Like I said before, the name's Julia. As...Funny as you can be, it's nice to have a friendly face here. Even better to know she can take care of herself."

"If you're going to stick with us for awhile, consider me a friend out there."

Amon was still a little shaken from his faceoff with the giant revenant. An army of corpses... they had just fought an army of the dead...
He cracked a small smile as the fire dragon addressed their teamwork on the battlefield. It was true. Amon might have emerged from that battle with more than just cuts and bruises had Amir not intervened in that encounter when he did. Amon was ready to take the blow... but thankfully he didn't have to.

"You really have improved exponentially." He he mentioned to Amir between pauses. "I'm sure Ramla agrees, since we left Sentria you have stepped up to every challenge. And we're not the only ones who have noticed."

He turned to face FD after taking another swig from his waterskin.

"You are the first dragon we have ever seen in the flesh. But the desert holds many mysteries... And I can tell you are interested. Have you ever heard of such a thing?"

The fight against the undead was exhausting. Ramla had burnt through a lot of her magic for the day just from that fight alone. She did have a rough time sleeping that night, though when morning came she couldn't remember just what she was dreaming about. After tidying up her bedhead to make herself look presentable, she went to join her liege and her partner for breakfast.

The man who she learned was a fire dragon had begun to talk to them during mealtime, although Ramla didn't have much to add into the conversation. When Amon mentioned her name, she joined the chat.

"Both of you have gotten much stronger since we left Sentria. Amon, when you went to fight that big bad skeleton all on your own, and when Amir jumped in to help you, my heart skipped a beat!" the mage replied. She then clutched her red cheeks and shook her head in a flustered manner. "You guys are too much! You're gonna make me fall in love with you again at this rate!"

It would take the Sentrian woman some time to regain her composure again.

He walked over to where the Sentrians sat and looked down at Amir with a blank face, but with eyes that spoke a thousand words. "...We made a promise to help you. And that is a promise we will keep..." He could feel the other conversations dying down as more and more eyes turned to him. "But I cannot ignore this. And I cannot change our plan, nor can I ask of you to sacrifice your goals for people you have never even met. So I will go alone... I will find them and help them the best I can... ...He is my brother... ..."

Rath looked at the ground for a moment before continuing. "As there are no other crew members present, the next logical and suitable leader falls to our technical client... to you. The soldiers will follow Marina's orders. The volunteer guild members will follow you. Continue with the plan. Guide them. ...I was prepared to go to the end. I'm sorry." Rath bowed his head to Amir and then began to turn away.

Roy took a break from eating and conversing with a fellow soldier to listen to what Rath had to say. He brought a hand up to his chin to think for a moment.

"Would it be a good idea for Rath to go alone, though...? I don't think Sue would leave him be." he mused quietly.

Amir held a hand to ask for a respectful pause between the newly met Fire Dragon and his retainers, digesting what had just occurred. To say it went down lightly was as far away from the truth as it could be. Once the young lord opened his mouth to respond, yet nothing could come to pass. As much as he wanted to object to the current course of action, there was still the obligation that he had to his people, to his father. The anger of his deathbed was still fresh in his mind, the pain of a loss that he could not prevent and the burden of the responsibility that weighed heavy on his shoulders. He could not speak, simply because he did not know who to address him as: Amir, the noble or Amir, the son and the comrade. Here was a man that had trusted him despite over a century's worth of a tarnished and soiled name because of his actions, because he was willing to give him a clean slate.

He owed him a great deal, especially on getting his simple band of three to this point. A gaze was given towards FD, towards a comrade he never thought in a century more would have given him his support. "You know, I truly would love for that village to exist. For peace to exist among my people, and if you would have it, yours. And the choice in front of me seems so simple, with that in mind. But..." He lifted himself from the ground, meeting Rath at his level before addressing him. "For a peace like that to exist, I don't think anyone would think me right to abandon a friend here. Not the heavens above, not my people, and certainly not me."

He held a hand, wanting to strike down Rath's resistance before it even started. And really...Part of it was a unspoken request to not think less of him for what he was about to say. "Even then, even away from me speaking as a person..., Chief Songhua and his people are those I came to that castle room to make my allies. I pledged myself to the long run at that moment, for the good of my people. Even if we were to succeed, my Sentria is still small, still weak for all the good it wishes. I need each and every single one of you."

"And for that, you may call me selfish."

“The Fire Dragon offered a measured nod to greet the Sentrians’ Sage component as she joined in before responding. “I have often been told of such a place in the world I come from, by my partner, who has visited it and reminisces most fondly over it. I must say I found the very idea difficult to believe initially.

“But some of our companions, even among just this group have visited it as well, including our leader Rath and my own nephew. What can change with time and be created astounds the mind. News to me of such a place existing has filled in me a strong interest in what mysteries and insights deserts harbor, yes,” FD revealed. “Although, my idea of what places such as your homeland may be like is probably misguided by what my family and friends have told me and my own limited experience there. Your understanding of it paints the more honest vision, I’m sure.”

And then Rath made his announcement, it followed by Amir’s blazing reply. Definitely a dragon of fire, he admired fiery the young Sentrian’s fiery convictions articulated aloud.

“We just did battle with the dead. What would have happened to the people of Songhua’s tribe with us now had we not all been here as a group? If the rest of their people is facing anything like what we have this morning, they need all our aid!” FD's proclaimed.

It was a sentiment everyone present would almost assuredly agree with and be thinking themselves. Songhua's tribe had been a reliable ally for some time, and the guild had interacted with them on both sides of the border for various causes more than once by this point.
