Quote:
5. You awaken in a place devoid of color, flat and featureless, the earth made of pebbled stones. A track is beaten through them that suggests the passage of many, many hooves, although it is utterly silent and there are no signs of life to be seen. You hear cold, mournful wind, but you do not feel it: the air is still and cool. A strange, smooth-sided tower rises in the distance and glows from within with a light like the moon. If you approach it, you find it surrounded with strange symbols, but touching it hurts--unless you are a Legendary, in which case it triggers floods of ancestral memory, not just from your own race (as expected), but from all of them. You remember snippets of lives lived by dozens of Kin of all types.

Even with her eyes closed, Evenfall knew there was something terribly wrong.

Languidly she opened her eyes, but it wasn't any different -- pitch black for a moment till her eyes started to adjust to the surroundings. She looked up, there were no stars at all, none of her old friends watching her from above, the ground did not feel like the swamp -- things felt very off, she could sense there was no life but there was no death either, it made her feel very uncomfortable. She couldn't hear anything, only the sound of her heart beating hard against her chest.

The only 'signs' of life were the markings of hooves on the ground, but it felt like they were long gone, merely a memory trapped in this world.

She could only see her own subtle glow in this dark place and nothing else, and for the first time in her life, Evenfall was scared.

When his blue eyes opened beneath curved skull helm, he immediately beheld something that was no where near home, and yet...had a strange quality of possible familiarity. Something distant tugging at his mind, a thought lodged and forgotten--

"Oof." The older Kimeti got to his hooves with a little difficulty, shooting the unforgiving ground he'd been upon a scathing glance. There wasn't an ounce of softness in the yawning monochrome he found himself in, neither in color nor texture. Shaking out his spiked mane, he quickly assessed where he was to the best of his abilities.

Grey. Flat. No life. Nothing to break the monotony of the horizon. In the distance, a tower erect with the only sign of fathomable light, reminiscent of the night despite the glow. Leading in that direction, a track of hoofprints of those who had come before him. Grave pieced it all together as he turned around, feeling in his gut he may know where he was--

Her.

Grave paused, staring at the doe for a long moment. Was she a figment of his imagination? Some piece of this place? But no -- the gold that lined her pelt, it was a testament that she was as real as he was and not a part of that place. "You," he remarked softly from a short distance away.

It was cold, so cold, and usually nothing would faze Evenfall but the --blankness and nothingness of this place she ended up in was terrifying to her. She couldn't hear anything, she couldn't feel anything.

She shivered, but not from the icy air that was in the atmosphere. The doe started to walk, the ground bumpy and uneven. Now she could see something strange in the distance, as if it just rose to greet her. It definitely didn't seem natural, the light coming from within this strange monument. But perhaps it would give her answers?

"You." -- she had heard, like a whisper in the wind, the voice was familiar and so very comforting at this time. She could never forget who had that voice, though she had heard it so rarely.

And she turned, and was met by a subtle blue glow. Perhaps this was still part of this terrible dream, perhaps it wasn't the male that she so wanted to see right this moment, maybe it was a monster in disguise?

But she was desperate, her legs feeling so heavy as she walked towards those eyes, the form she could make out from where she was now. "Is it ... you?"

When she turned to look at him, he wasn't sure what to feel. Relief that she heard him? Dismay that she was in this place? Disquiet that he felt that he might have to be responsible for another? Well, maybe not, if his thoughts were correct...

The Kimeti shook out his webbed mane again, approaching her with the slow sway of his spiked tail. "As far as I can be," he responded in the most unhelpful manner possible. "We never exchanged names. Perhaps you are just a part of this dream-beyond." Grave regarded her seriously, gravity in the blue flame of his eyes. He paused halfway to her, letting her cross the rest of the way. He could feel the pebbled ground against his hooves, could feel the stagnant nothing of the place, even though it was cool in an unnatural manner. They needed every moment of reality they could grasp, even if it was as simple as crossing the barren wasteland.

"We met at the oranges," he ventured, as though to prove it was him. But if this was a dream - or what he suspected it was - what was to say his own mind wasn't playing tricks on him? What was to say this wasn't just...part of the process? Grave figured he'd never know if he didn't try. "You were fond of my foxbun. Do you remember her name?" It was a mostly innocent question, and entirely a non-innocent test.

"Yes, perhaps." She entertained that notion, "Perhaps we are just.. part of this dream place. We both cannot be sure of anything." Evenfall was uncertain, even with herself. Unsure if what was happening was even real, or even if herself and the other buck were actually there.

The cold strange wind persisted, making her shiver with it's sudden breath. It was strange moving, it was as if she was merely staying in place, the uneven ground beneath her hooves feeling unreal.

"I remember that day," the doe said a little affectionately, a memory that she fondly remembered, making her feel more comforted even though she was confused at this question asked. "---Yes, yes, she was this little beautiful, ghostly foxbun." She bowed her head, "Her name was Fragment and you told me she didn't need that praise." A little chuckle escaped her lips even though it echoed blankly into the darkness. "Your companions were quite fond of the fruit, even if you weren't."

The Kimeti stood stone still, staring at the doe with a dull look in his face. She had already confessed they could be sure of nothing, yet she tried to explain, to answer him. He was fairly certain his dreams would be more logical than that and, through his own simple method of deduction, decided that he was not, in fact, dreaming. That, however, was not his original concern...

"That they are not here with me means that they are dead, or perhaps we are." The flippant tone of his voice made it clear he was not bothered by the notion. "I've spent my life dedicated to the passage of those gone to a restful place. Perhaps this is it. Perhaps it is a reward for my services...or a glimpse to further understand what it is I truly do." Grave was a touch self-absorbed in this notion, romanticizing the idea that this was some sort of transcendence, a step of affirmation for all he'd done. He was not afraid.

Turning his head to the great spire that was the single thing to mar the horizon line, he nodded in its direction. "We should head there. Even if it was not the only thing of which to meet as an end goal, those before us - " he glanced down, stamping his hoof upon the well-worn path, " - have already made the trek. There is nothing here. Shall we?" And without awaiting affirmation, he swung his spiked tail about and trotted down the path - not in the middle of it, but to the side, intent to follow but never just be a part of the currant. Not when he didn't feel dead.

And actually what Grave said made ... sense to her. If their lives had both ended and they were in the path to where they have to be -- then there was nothing to be afraid of. As morbid and strange as the buck's theory was, in her mind it was the ultimate comfort.

"Then give me the honour of walking alongside you to our end." she said it in a strangely sweet voice, walking over to him and nodding her head. "Everything ends and if this-- this is where the end all begins then I am very ready."

She looked over to the glowing structure in the distance, the only thing that was lit aside from the markings on her back. "Of course, of course, it only makes sense to." Evenfall walked quickly to match his pace, her hooves making strange sounds against the pebbles underneath.

The doe's sudden sweetness to him made the buck do a double-take, blue eyes smoldering from 'neath his bone helm. The female was giving him such consideration and reverence all of a sudden, as though holding him in high regard. If Grave had any doubt about her being a figment of his imagination, it disappeared in that instant: even he would not imagine the pretty doe to be so flattering to him in such a manner. That was definitely of her own doing.

"As you please," was all he responded with, noting her matched gait and treading the beaten path in silence.

Time stretched, or so he assumed. It was impossible to tell in a barren wasteland devoid of color and life. The spire approached in distance, much larger in his vision before he spoke again. "What is your name? No matter what we find here, what may come of this trip, I've wish to know what I might call you." It only seemed appropriate, potentially facing their end, that he may at least bid her a peaceful good bye.
