Zacharael's gaze swept back and forth. There was a smugness that the stallion was exuding in every step that he took. Who knew that a random wish on a star could result in such a wondrous gift? Oh he had been informed of this little quirk in the heavenly bodies when he had been told of his son's appearance. Now there was a jaunty bounce in his step. Oh Ara had shocked him quite good but now it was his turn to return the favor. He had taken one of the painted rocks that he had stolen during that first meeting with Ara and left it along with a wish that perhaps the star would grant.

Lo and behold a basket had appeared by his side the next night as he had lain sleeping. Upon awakening that fateful morning Zacharael had been constantly on the move with his precious gift. When the basket had opened to reveal a tiny filly Zach had become a devoted father to his daughter. He appreciated that she had gained wings. He'd be able to teach her to fly soon. But for now the stallion was on the prowl seeking out the mare that had come to occupy his thoughts now that he knew what she had gone through.

Gabe was growing more and more every day. Ara wasn't sure how big he would get, but he definitely wasn't a foal anymore. He was all gangly limbs and awkward wings. He'd not taken much of an interest in flight yet, but she figured it was only a matter of time (flying was awesome). Her boy was a bit afraid of heights, which she found endearing, but which had made it difficult to get him to learn when his wings had become strong enough.

"Gabe, keep up. I'm going to get Silk to bite you if you keep dragging your heels like that." she mock threatened when she noticed he was falling behind.

Her mother had finally refused to watch Gabe anymore, as the older he got the more likely he was to wander off anyway. She argued that if he hadn't gotten killed or maimed on his little misadventures yet, he would be fine tagging along with his mother on her quests for art materials.

Gabe sighed but picked up his feet anyway. The first time his mother had offered to let him come along with her (months ago) he had been so excited. Now he knew that her adventures involved a lot of walking, and later carrying, and overall they were pretty boring. He could only get Silk to play I Spy so many times, not to mention there were only so many things to see when they were walking through the same terrain all day.

"Good luck getting Silk to do anything..." he grumbled at her back. The snake was currently fast asleep, curled around his neck.

"What was that?" Ara said, turning her head over her shoulder. She'd heard, but was daring her offspring to back talk her to her face.

"Nothing! I said of course I'll walk faster." he covered, blinking at her in innocence.

Ara snorted in amusement. "Right. Well..."

She trailed off, distracted by a sight in the distance. There was a tree that was shattered at the top with curious vertical stripes of missing bark going all the way to the ground. Around it were shard of wood and bark, some with interesting charring at the edges. "Look! This stuff is pretty cool, let's take some with us."

That said mother and son started to pick up what most others would consider garbage, the former with a smile on her face and the latter grumbling to himself.

At first Zach thought he'd lost Ayako. He had left his daughter a ways back to scope out the terrain ahead for any possible dangers. Pandora was babysitting. So far the snake had been tolerant of the constant duty. It seemed as though his daughter didn't mind the extra set of eyes. Zacharael groaned as he scanned the area before spotting the familiar splash of darker color amongst the rocks. Ayako must have been hiding behind them the first time he had looked that way.

Strolling up to the filly Zach nuzzled his daughter before sighing, "Tenshi I wish that you'd not play hide-and-go-seek with me if I tell you to stay put. It worries me."

Zach couldn't remember when he had given his daughter a nickname but she was his little angel. He looked down at her before shaking his head. He couldn't stay upset at her.

Ayako looked up from where Pandora was situated on her neck to gaze imploringly at her dad. She gave a little giggle before hearing his words. At the tone in his voice Ayako glanced upwards sharply before smiling. She knew that he would not stay mad at her. He never really did. The filly was learning quickly that she could disarm her father's temper if she tried hard enough. Her voice was soft as she spoke, "I'm sorry. I thought that you wanted to play a game. Isn't that why you turned away? Where are we going anyways?"

Zacharael watched as Pandora dropped from his daughter's neck to slither away for a break. He knew the snake would find him again in a while. He glanced down at Ayako's curious expression before sighing. He'd kept the reason for their travels secret but lately Ayako's constant questions made him realize that he would have to answer. He gave a exasperated sigh before calming himself down, "we are looking for someone. I don't know where she and her son is though."

It had been a tough decision to tell Gabe about his father, but with the way Zach had reacted Ara decided it wouldn't be a good idea to keep the secret any longer. Ara didn't believe in fate, and yet she kept crossing paths with the other. Without any concrete reasoning to support her inkling, she knew she would see him again and Gabe would probably not be as easily sent away the next time. Shortly after their encounter with Zach, she'd explained to him how he had come to be in her life. She'd already told him about the Wishing Star, but hadn't known how to phrase 'you were an accident' without giving him the wrong impression.

Ara thought her son took the news remarkably well, though she could tell he didn't trust her in the same way that he had as a small child when she could do no wrong in his eyes. It was in the way he suddenly didn't tell her every little thing that went on in his day, and how he seemed to be getting 'too big' for their normal signs of affection. She wondered if it was really him growing up or if it was because he saw her differently now. She hoped he didn't see himself differently. Gabe had asked her once if they could go out and search for his father, and her first reaction was a vehement denial followed by intense indecision. Every time she ran across him he did something to upset her or threaten her in some way. On the other hoof, he had seemed genuinely shocked and she believed that Gabe deserved the chance to make up his mind about his father himself. In the end, her silence had gone on too long and Gabe had retracted his request.

The guilt she felt over that brief, one-sided conversation was intense. Ara could tell that her son wanted dearly to run into his father again, so she began to go out earlier and stay out later, in the vague hope she might run into her child's father again. She was confident that she could protect her son from Zach if he didn't react well to a second meeting.

He'd only suggested intentionally finding his father once, and at his mother's stony silence had decided to not ask again. That didn't stop him from hoping to run into him again however. Gabriel started to spend more time on his own, hoping to run across his father by chance like the first time but without his mother to interfere. He was curious about the person whom half his existence was based on. Gabe wondered what it would have been like if his father had wished on the star instead, and before long he'd built up an idea of what his father was like despite Ara's blatant dislike for him. He didn't know of her decision to let him meet Zach, and so as had become his usual he made up a reason to leave Ara's side. Silk was still around his neck and at Ara's word to "Watch over him", made a vague gesture in the affirmative.

"Just make sure you don't get lost. If you can't find me remember the clearing we agreed to meet at at sunset." his mother said absently, lost in her thoughts.

"Yes, Mom." he replied, already wandering away from her with the hope that today might be the day...

There was something so very tempting about the open expanse of ground that Ayako now found herself staring at. She could bound off and hide once more and her daddy wouldn't be able to spot her so easily. She knew that he would be mad that she had scampered off again without Pandora to look after her but she'd be able to charm her way out of a lecture, she was sure about that. Ayako stepped a few paces from her father's retreating form before giggling softly as she quietly veered off the path that Zacharael had been following. Daddy would have to come find her. Her wings twitched a little as she fought the desire to leap into the air. She hadn't mastered flying yet and was more than likely to end up with eating dirt.

Zach didn't need eyes in the back of his head to know that Ayako was once again sneaking off. She always tried the trick and eventually was always found within a reasonable amount of time. The difference today that worried him was that his familiar was not actively acting as a lookout. He had half a mind to immediately chase Ayako down but thought the better of it. She'd be okay and he'd be able to spot her from miles away on the open plain that she seemed to be veering towards. Casually the stallion scented the air before detecting something oddly familiar. Checking the position of his cleaver the stallion forgot about his daughter as a more enticing target became front and center in his mind. Oh there was a chance that Ara wasn't even around and that he was just picking up old traces but somehow he didn't think that it was the case today. Idly he began to whistle a jaunty tune as he strolled forth, eyes never ceasing their scanning motion.

Ara was still stewing in her thoughts, when a noise caught her attention. Her ears swiveled towards it, followed by the rest of her as she turned to face the direction it was coming from.

She didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Of course. Of course she would run into him when she was all but brooding over him.

For a moment Ara considered fleeing in the other direction, but her resolve to let Gabe decide for himself the involvement his father would have in his life kept her in place as he got closer. She didn't know what to say to him to not escalate into an argument the way they normally did, so she opted to let him make the first move.

Gabriel had wandered a bit further than he'd meant to and found the edge of the wooded area they had been walking through. Silk was a heavy weight around his shoulders and neck, and even if the snake was awake he wouldn't tell Gabe to stay in the forest. Still, he had no real desire to go much further. The plane around the forest was flat and he could see for a good ways. It seemed he was the only being around. There wouldn't be a point to wandering around hoping to run into someone when there was no one for miles. He was about to turn around when he saw a flash of movement from the corner of his eye. He turned to look closer, to see a small, winged filly. She wasn't very far away from him and he decided he must have missed her because of her diminutive height. He debated with himself whether or not to talk to her. Normally Gabe would shy away from a new person, but something about the filly seemed familiar, so he gathered his courage and spoke.

"H-hello, what are you doing out here by yourself?" he asked hesitantly.

It became rather apparent that although sneaking off to play around on the plain had been a success Ayako soon found herself full of boredom. It didn't seem as if anyone were around. The filly huffed with indignity before pausing to sniff at the head of a flower. Daddy had told her to hide her cravings from others but sometimes it was hard. She was part kalona after all. Meat just seemed more appealing to her.

Just when Ayako thought it would be better to follow her daddy a voice piped up from nearby. The charismatic youngster looked around before her gaze settled on the larger foal. Ayako peered up at him before ducking her head shyly under her wing. That last for a minute before she bounded towards him. "I'm trying to hide from my daddy. You haven't seen him, have you?"

Zacharael chuckled softly as the mare he wanted to see the most came into view. He idly flicked his gaze towards the area behind her in order to attempt a glance of Gabriel. Not seeing the youngster Zach gave a pointed look towards Ara before merely nodding towards her. "I'm surprised you don't keep a tighter lease on our son. Can't control him any more?"

Gabriel looked around cautiously, as if another soquili would pop out of the woods suddenly and yell at him for talking to their daughter. "No, I haven't seen anyone other than my mom today," he paused, "oh, and Silk."

The sound of his name made the lazy snake crack an eye open, take in the situation, dismiss it, and resettle into his nap. Gabe sighed. "Sorry about him, he's supposed to watch me but he pretty much just sleeps all the time."

A thought occurred to him then, "...why are you trying to hide from your dad?"

Ara reminded herself that she wasn't going to escalate this time. Not. Going. To. Argue. So when she replied it was with only a slight hint of annoyance, "Gabe can take care of himself. What are you doing around here?".

Ayako saw the snake lift its head from around the other foal's neck at the mention of the name given. Her eyes grew a little wider for the mere reason that this snake seemed to be doing the exact thing that Pandora did for her. Ayako heard the question that the other foal posed to her before returning her attention to him. She took in his markings and grinned before her wings shuffled a little. "I like to play hide and go seek with him. He doesn't like me running off but he always finds me and I'm never in any real trouble with him when he does find me. Silk is pretty. Pandora does the same thing with me. I think daddy puts her up to it."

Ayako paused for a moment, "What are you doing?"

Zach merely raised his eyebrows at the almost civilized response that he received from Ara. Perhaps both of them were maturing a little. Then again Zach felt that the bomb he was about to drop on the mare would flare things up. Clearing his throat the stallion grinned at the question. How would Ara react if she learned that she now had a daughter as well? Zach's gaze idly ran up and down Ara's body. "You ask why I am here? Last time we met you explained how Gabriel came to be. Well I was so intrigued by your tale that when that bright star was shining down from the sky I sought out to test its power."

Zach recalled the superstitious feeling he'd been overwhelmed with as he trekked up the hill to the altar that a local had told him about. He hadn't expected anything to come of his wish and gift but he had been blessed.

Zach could sense that the next sentence he spoke would cause an outburst and he relished the chance to shock this mare like she had done to him. "I was skeptical at first as I trudged up that hill with my offering; It was one of your gold rocks by the way. But I made a wish on the star and I must have been looked upon with favor by the spirits. Your rock and my words combined to create my own basket from the stars. I came to seek you out to inform you that we have a daughter."

Gabriel nodded along with her explanation, relaxing a little. He wondered where Pandora was if it was supposed to be fulfilling the same role for her as Silk did for him.

"Probably, mom always says if I'm going to wander off I need to take Silk with me, like he's going to be much protection while he's sleeping." Gabriel rolled his eyes.

He didn't really know what he was doing. What were the odds he would really run into his father like this? "I'm out with my mom, but I got bored so I went for a walk." he said, not technically lying.

Ara watched Zach suspiciously. He seemed too smug. When he looked her up and down she scowled lightly, wings twitching as if to cover herself though they didn't move from their position folded in to her back. As his story unfolded she mentally skipped ahead and shock began to bloom in her mind. He didn't!

She suddenly felt light headed. This was not the encounter she had been expecting. Her eyes were bugging out of her head, she was sure, but she couldn't find words.

"...what?" she finally managed to produce.

Ayako listened carefully to this stranger before she smiled cheerfully. She could understand the boredom issue. Her daddy was fun to play with at times but sometimes he just seemed too serious. Her grin grew as she took in Silk again before realizing that she still didn't know her new friend's name. Ayako didn't know if he would want to be friends but she was already thinking of him like that. "So is your walk any less boring yet then hanging around your mom?"

Ayako paused for a minute before frowning. She had never met her mother. "Anyways, what is your name? I'm Ayako."

Zach grinned. His bombshell that he had just dropped onto Ara had the desired effect. He had rendered her almost as speechless as he had been. Zach stepped closer to Ara before speaking his next sentence one word at a time, "You. And. I. Have. A. Daughter. She is around here somewhere."

Zach wasn't sure where Ayako had run off to but now was more about dealing with Ara. He was slightly worried that Pandora hadn't gone with his little angel but beggars couldn't be choosers.

"Oops! Sorry, I'm Gabriel" he grimaced at his full name, Mom only used it when he was in trouble, "but you can call me Gabe."

He thought about it a little bit, "Not really, but at least she's not telling me to keep up every few minutes. Are you having fun hiding from your dad?" Maybe she would want to play hide and seek with him? Gabe hadn't had a lot of other foals to play with when he was younger, and he wasn't quite to the stage yet where he was trying to shed childhood and be seen as an adult.

Ara spent a few more moments in silence trying to remember to breath. Zach's words echoed in her head. A daughter. She had another kid with the most infuriating stallion she had ever met. A daughter she hadn't known about.

As her mind started to process, she wondered - was this how Zach had felt when he'd found out about Gabe? She felt bad all of a sudden for not ever making even a cursory attempt at finding him after Gabe had come into her life.

The shock she was feeling was tempered by her prior experience with the day Gabriel had come into her life. It had taken a few months for her to accept that she was a mother now, and she was ashamed of that to this day. He'd been an accident and she'd been unprepared. She wondered if he remembered how floundering she'd been at first.

Those thoughts settled her enough to start to ask questions. She took a shaky breath, and then a deeper breath to calm herself. "We have a daughter. Okay. Okay..." she paused, "what's her name?"

Ayako smiled at Gabriel. She found his name interesting. However she took his request that she could call him Gabe to heart. She glanced around before letting her gaze lock on the wings on Gabe's back. Her own wings once again fluttered as if she wished to try flying with them again. Her voice was excited as she replied, "I like hiding from my dad. It is fun for me and I get to see new places but I never really go too far from him. I know that it's dangerous to be by myself. Do you like to play hide and seek with anyone?"

Ayako pranced nearer to Gabe before giggling. She was glad that she had someone to possibly play with.

As Ara continued to process the information that he had sprung on her Zach registered movement out of the corner of his eye. Pandora was returning to him it seemed. He frowned briefly before realizing that his familiar had located Ayako and was merely informing him of her whereabouts. The stallion sighed before watching Ara as she mentally composed herself. At her next question Zach nodded as if she were asking for confirmation. "I didn't believe it at first Ara but it is true. I named her Ayako. She is the gift I didn't expect but I've come to care for her. Deeply. Like you care for Gabriel."

Zach felt his familiar curl around his tail and brought it his tail up so he could hear what she was telling him. He gave a swift nod in response and watched the snake drop to the ground and slither off. Pandora was off to make sure that Ayako didn't stray much farther away from where she was. It seemed though as if she had found company.

He smiled and laughed when Ayako pranced nearer to him and fluttered his wings a bit. Silk grumbled from his place around his neck but Gabe ignored him. If he wanted a mobile napping place he could deal with a little bit of jostling.

Gabe thought about the tiny friend he hadn't seen in a while and nodded. "Yes, I have a friend who I haven't seen in a while. Mom and I have been traveling a little bit lately. He and I go on adventures together sometimes, and we play hide and seek too. I try not to play tag with him though because he is even smaller than you and it's not fair, since he can't run as fast as I can."

He felt bad...now that he thought about it it had been kind of a long time since he'd been back in the area where they used to play. Oh well, he decided he would go looking for his friend the next time they were in the area.

"Do you want to play hide and seek with me?" he asked, hopefully. He was surprised at himself for feeling so eager to play the game, but it had been a long time since he'd played with anyone but his mom, he supposed.

Ara regarded the stallion across from her as he interacted with his familiar quietly. He seemed different from the last two times they'd met. Less of an a*****e (so far), for sure. Maybe it was her not rising to the bait, but she was hopeful at the change that a meeting between her son and his father wouldn't go as terribly as she'd envisioned hundreds of times.

"I do care for him." she affirmed quietly, still processing the new information and watching the snake slither away again.

Ayako. It was a lovely name. Mother would be happy that it matched the family too. "It's funny how unprepared you are for a kid but they manage to worm their way into your heart, isn't it."

She sighed, suddenly exhausted. "Do you think I could meet her? I wanted to say before you dropped that bomb that Gabe wants to talk to you. I told him about you right after you saw him that time..." she trailed off, hesitating. "I also wanted to apologize. I handled the whole situation badly. I should have tried to find you and I didn't."

Despite her dislike of him, she should have considered how it would affect her son to find out like that about his father. What did she think would happen when Gabe got older, that he would never question her about who his father was? She shook her head minutely at her own short-sighted-ness before meeting Zach's eyes and waiting.

She felt a little sad that Gabe hadn't seen his friend for a while but she couldn't really understand the feeling. Being on the move constantly she had not had the opportunity to experience the feeling of friendship yet. However as her ears flicked back and forth Ayako felt her grin grow wider as she took in the question that Gabe had poised to her. If it were possible she felt her grin grow wider. Her spaded tail whipped back and forth eagerly before she nodded enthusiastically. She wanted to play. But how would they decide who would hide first?

Ayako glanced towards Gabe and Silk before noting movement on the ground. A black and yellow patterned snake approached her and Ayako gave it a cursory sniff before kneeling to the ground. The feeling of the snake slithering up to rest around her neck was ticklish and Ayako giggled again. "Gabe, this is Pandora. Who should hide first?"

Zach pricked his ears forward towards Ara as she was speaking. It seemed as if for the first time both of them agreed on the same thing. He sighed softly before speaking his own piece, "I think I understand what you are getting at. Ever since Ayako came into my life I've come to realize that she's become the world to me. Heaven forbid anyone who dares to mess with her."

Zach took in Ara's question and following statement before weighing the idea carefully in his mind. It would possibly ease tensions between them if Ara could meet Ayako. At the same time Zach could spend a little time talking with Gabriel. Breathing in deeply the stallion let the air go in a large exhale before merely nodding in response. "I think that might be a good idea. According to Pandora, that was the snake by the way, Ayako isn't too far off. It seems as if she has found a friend to play with."

What Zach didn't tell Ara was that it seemed that Ayako had already found her brother. They wouldn't know that they were siblings though ... at least not yet.

-[The Spoof]-
I figure Pandora would remember Gabe and would tell Zach that it was him that Ayako is playing with.
