Life Hunter
BATTLE ARENA

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

General Information
The portal opens up into an observation room, and down the stairs, an odd chamber for something like hunter training. At the center of a piranha-filled pool stands a solid stone table and several chairs. The Life Arena was built underneath the demolitions and ballistics testing areas, and the chamber rumbles with the occasional explosions above. Pinpoint red lasers sweep across the room regularly, as if hidden snipers are searching for a nice target. In the center of the table sits a wooden tower, made up of smaller wooden blocks. Yes. That's right. The Life Hunters prefer to train via Jenga.

Note: Distraction techniques and Yo Momma jokes are considered viable weapons when playing competitively.

If you fail: you have knocked down the tower! A small dart hits the back of your neck. You come to several hours later, and hope Dr. H didn't do anything to your body while you were unconscious. When you look into the mirror...

If you win: you have reached 50 points! You get a sharpie marker to do with as you please. peen points go to those with the highest scores.

Group Play
Playing in a group on any course means certain things can be shifted to make it a better experience for multiple people without holding anyone back.
An approved group play alteration for the life arena goes as follows:
When someone knocks the tower down, they are shot with a weaker dart. They will wake up 5 minutes later, the game can be reset back to the point before it fell by placing their hands on the table and saying the word, constructum. This allows them to start again where they left off instead of the beginning. They can take up to three of these darts before passing out for an hour, the game will not reset for them and they will need to try again from the beginning.

    Mechanics
    - by carefully removing pieces of the tower, you earn points and advance to the next round. As the rounds continue, the odds grow steadily against you. Rolling a 1 at any point means you have knocked down the tower. Please do enjoy your mystery dart. Anything after reaching 50 points is purely for peen.

    - you may roll pieces individually (suggested for group play) or in batches of 5 (basically, a full round.)

  • Round 1

    Pieces: 5
    Points per piece: 1
    Trainee Roll: 1d10
    Life Trainee Roll: 1d12

  • Round 3

    Pieces: 5
    Points per piece: 4
    Trainee Roll: 1d6
    Life Trainee Roll: 1d8
    Hunter Roll: 1d8

  • Round 4

    Pieces: 5
    Points per piece: 10
    Trainee Roll: 1d4
    Life Trainee Roll: 1d6
    Hunter Roll: 1d6

    Bonus Mechanics

Noemi wrung her hands together outside of the life labs, peeking in every now and again and then ducking her head when someone actually noticed her. She wasn't sure how to find Oliver in the massive labyrinth, and she wasn't sure if she wanted to ask Jack to help her with this.

Perhaps it was better if she found a stranger, but every time someone passed, she just clutched at her jacket tightly.

Like an hour later, after embarrassingly standing there for awhile, she randomly reached out, grabbing a long haired blonde sleeve and looking up at him.

"Um...um hi...." She blinked and stuttered forever.

He was confused. That seemed to happen a lot lately. Especially with being recruited by a secret save-the-world organization with potential connections to the occult and definite connections to the supernatural...apparently. There was definitely something completely new going on. What with...He heaved a deep sigh and rubbed the area above the nose and right between the eyes. Meera. F***ing talking weapon or some sh*t, wouldn't shut up until three in the morning because apparently she hadn't found someone to talk to in awhile which was really all very interesting but--Why the f***ing hell does she talk about the most useless things. 'Oh, why don't you do more push-ups, Dietrich? Let's do some push-ups, Dietrich. Let's pack on your muscle Dietrich. You look like a wuss now Dietrich.' Wldijfsmfgwaf. He had woken up a little after noon and since the dorms around him seemed quiet and empty, still pretty creepy though, he was now walking around trying to find what place the people of 'life division' were supposed to be at or at least something to do because he really was all very lost.

Cress felt a sudden tug on his sleeve. Who the--- He looked to his looked to his side, and then looked down, stopping the instinctive 'What the hell do you want' response just in time. Sh*t. She looks scared of me already. He cleared his throat awkwardly, "Yeah...errr...hi." He paused. She might have been here longer than he had, so she might have a better idea of what's going on. "Ummm...I'm actually new around here. Do you happen to know where...errr...the people of the 'life' division are supposed to go train or something...?" Hopefully he was getting the terminology right or else he would look like a complete fool. Though the 'errs' and 'umms' were probably already doing that for him.

Noemi tried really hard not to flinch, after all, it had been stupid of her to just randomly grab a stranger out of the blue.

But she was lucky that this stranger wasn't like straight into the hug and touches like Jeremy and Milo. They were embarassing when they did that.

She cleared her throat, raising her eyes to look at him then dropping them down again almost immediately.

"Ah, Welcome to the Island..." She started out politely, her hand dropping from his sleeve. "Um...yes...I can show you that at least!" She fidgeted nervously because she was HELPING SOMEONE...instead of running away!! It was fantastic! "I've only been here 3 months! So I don't know much either....but....I know training course...I'm Noemi! Um but some call me...Mimi." She whispered and then started to lead him away. "I'm part of the mist division!" She said suddenly.

By then she was speed walking away from Cress without even realizing it.

"Ah, err...thanks." The Island? That was what this place was called? He had thought that there had been a more proper name for it though they had mentioned that the place they were was the island, but he didn't think it would actually be called the Island. Or errr...Well, whatever. She had been here for three months already? That was good at least--she would at least be able to fill him in a bit since he himself was still new to all of this. He wanted to ask her more questions, but she seemed to be in a kind of panicky hurry so he supposed that he would question her later...when she didn't seemed so downright scared of him. Why had she been standing around here anyway? This place didn't seem to be like the place where there would be tour guides, but well, whatever. It was fine. He would figure out all of this later.

"Ah." Cress speed-walked after her. "Errr, that's great. Umm..hi--" Well, what was he supposed to call her? Her name was Noemi, yes, but she said that some did call her Mimi, but what was he supposed to call her? Wewkfmiodjfwf. "Hi Noemi." Yeah, he would use her nickname if or when he knew her better if it ever actually got to that point. Yes, that was the best option. "I'm Dietrich Cress, but errr...yeah, some people just call me Cress. I'm in the life division if you couldn't tell."

Noemi nodded. "Mister Cress? Is that okay? Espero que no te moleste ser tan formal!" She flushed as he called her by her name, even though she had offered it. It was embarassing to her at least because she was use to not so many knowing her.

"Life division!" She stopped and looked around at his coat, nodding. "I have....friends there! I know Oliver? and Jack..." She gestured her hand up really high to show Cress that Jack was tall. "¿Gigante, alto, grande? Big...Giant man!" She nodded.

"I am mist division. Um...we are suppose to specialize in all."

"Errr...yeah, sure I guess." Being called 'Mister Cress' felt f***ing weird, like she was actually referring to his dad or something. Cause that was the Mister Cress. The only time that he had had it refer to himself was when adult adults were speaking down to him in an i-have-more-experience-than-you-so-shut-up-and-listen-to-me manner, and even then, the prefix had been used as irony more than anything. Mister Cress. He grimaced at the sound. He could almost see his beginning wrinkles and bad hip. Screw it. Piecing what little Spanish he remembered taking in some half-baked class back in high school and hoping dearly that he wasn't about to accidentally utter an insult, he said, "Llámame Cress. 'Mister Cress' es mi padre, pero si tu quiera yo ser formal, digame. Señorita...?" Cr*p, I don't know her last name. She didn't tell me did she.

He shook his head. "Lo siento, no conozco ellos. Pero espero conozcalos eventualmente." He switched back to English now because he didn't want to accidentally butcher the language any more. Because quite honestly, sometimes he wasn't sure if he was speaking actual Spanish or Spanglish. His high school teacher would have cried. "Sorry, my Spanish is not very good. I might've just butchered half of what I was just saying by accident. But mist division sounds cool. Does this mean you will be joining me on the course?"

Noemi stopped, looking over her shoulder as Cress started to speak spanish, clapping her hands together, her eyes growing wide with excitement! It was the first time on the Island she had someone who could speak spanish (there was her cousin Stormy but...Stormy didn't seem inclined to speak to her at all...) so his responding to her, even if a bit odd made her more open to speaking with him.

She even graced him with a rare shy smile. "NO NECESITAS SER FORMAL CONMIGO! Ah Gracias, aunque habla muy bien Español! Es agradable!" She stood even a bit closer to him, not trying to speed her way to the training courses.

"Ah, Jack is good person to talk too? He will help you lots." She pursued her lips, "But...But Oliver is like me. We are scared easily. Coming here to Island is different from life before? Much scarier then I thought..." She sighed a bit, "Ah, Si! I will be joining you for course, so that I can learn more about mist as well as other divisions." She smiled up at him again. "Th...That is if it's not a bother? If...if you don't mind me...?"

The way that the girl in front of him suddenly became a lot less scared and shy and a lot more talkative made even Cress grin a bit goofily for a bit. His respect for his Spanish teacher went up a tad and he mentally reminded himself to brush up on it a bit if given the time.

"Hmmm...well, I hope to meet them sometime." He paused, "Life here is different. We're all isolated from the-"He tried to find a proper word. "-normal world. It's just us on the Island after all." Cult recruiters purposely constructed distant communes to isolate its members from friends and family, but Cress didn't mention it. It would have lead to a wholly different conversation that he didn't particularly feel like taking part in at the moment. Plus, Noemi might revert to her original manner again. Now was the time to simply gather information. "But I can't say much since I haven't done much. Have you been on any missions yet?" Quite frankly, he had done practically nothing so far. "That'll be fantastic."

Having someone who could understand her nervous spanish babbling was great! For some reason it made her a little less nervous. And Cress even smiled so...She could only assume this was the right way to go about friends. Milo and Jeremy would be proud.

"Life is very different." She agreed, "Normal world...It's odd to say that we are not normal any longer...but it is true that we are not. Weapon bonds, hunting halloween, these things. Normal now for us and weird to others." She didn't think of the Island as a cult but a militaric community. They were suppose to be an army.

"Ah....missions." She gave him a sad look, rubbing at her arm where the healing burns had finally turn to slightly darker skin. "The missions here are..." She looked at her feet, "They are...dangerous...and there is a lot of blood." And she had been eaten, but her body was starting to close in itself, and if Noemi could, she would draw herself into her coat and hide away.

She didn't say much more though, perhaps because she was trying to not relive the sahara mission.

He nodded. Trying to explain to outsiders what he was doing on the Island, if that was actually allowed, would give him an one way trip to the loony bin. This was the kind of stuff that not even conspiracy theorists dreamed about. He could not have believed half of it if he wasn't here himself; and even now, there was still a lingering doubt about the entire thing. His brow furrowed as Noemi talked about the missions. She seemed to close in on herself as she remembered whatever had happened. Cr*p, I'm in for hell, aren't I.

Trying to distract the girl from her thoughts and hopefully steer the conversation into a more, for the lack of a better word, cheerful tone, Cress pointed towards the portal ahead. "Is that the training area...?" Part of him told him that training wasn't going to be cheerful at all and to say his prayers while he had the chance.

She kept her arms wrapped around herself and nodded when he pointed to the portal.

"Si, That is it." She didn't seem bothered by the door that led to the life labs training room, heading over to it and opening it up for them. There was a tendril of stairs to go down, eventually reaching a room where two lab techs nodded to them. A room was set up with a table inside, a tower of jenga placed neatly in the middle with two chairs on either side.

Around the room was a moat with sharks swimming, water spilling on the floor where they would casually jump up too.

Noemi froze and stared in horror at the training room.

"What the f***." was his first reaction to the training room. Then he stared at it in abject horror for several long seconds. He had had trouble trying to guess what life hunter training could be like. After all, unlike the other divisions, excluding death, life division didn't exactly have a physical component. It was really all about research after all. He had supposed that it might be something like a very intricate version of Operation or some boring training modules set on a big screen and played like a video game. That would have been fine. That would have been normal. Of course, we get to have this kind of sh*t on the Island. He stared at the little wooden tower in the center of the table. F***ing Jenga. In a room full of sharks. Are they even allowed to house sharks here? It's not like it's a f***ing aquarium. I'm sure that they don't have government approval; just kidding, they don't need government approval. Ugh.

The ceiling rumbled. Beneath what looks like the f***ing demolitions department too. He glared at the pinpoint red lasers scanning the room. Bloody fantastic. He looked down at Noemi. She seemed just as aghast as he felt. He sighed and walked over to the table, carefully making sure to give the water a large berth. He pulled out a chair for her and waited with an uneasy cr*p-we're-not-going-to-die-from-this-right-it's-only-training-i'd-like-to-live-thank-you-very-much smile. "Well, it can't be lethal, right?"

Noemi followed after Cress, stopping the minute water touched her boots and stared at the dorsal fins swimming about.

"We'll...We'll be okay...." She whispered like a mantra, "It's just a training, they can't kill you here..." God she hoped that was true, She hoped it would be due to the missions but even those seem to attempt to kill.

She stared at the offered seat, then up to Cress. "T..Thank you Cress." She nodded, taking the seat and waiting till he sat across from her. Once in position, she looked back at the sharks...then the tower. As neatly as she could, she removed a piece.

"....Y...Your turn."

Cress sat himself across from her. After taking a seat, it didn't seem to be too bad. Apart from yes, the sharks swimming around them in a sketchy tank, yes, the sniper lasers scanning the room, yes, the occasional booms from above, it really seemed just to be a game of Jenga. What would happen if the tower fall; well, he didn't particularly want to know or find out, but in the end, it should not be too lethal. After all, Deus would still need their trainees to fill the ranks or at least become...err...meat shields on missions in the field, and it wouldn't be optimal for their trainees to be killed in training. Or at least he hoped so; that seemed to be the rational way of thinking. But rational thinking might not apply to dangerous games in the middle of a shark filled chamber.

He slid a block carefully from the middle of the tower. Grinning wryly, he said in a rather conversational tone, "Who thinks of creating training courses like this? F***ing screwed up isn't it?" He waved at a nearby sniper laser before realizing that was probably a really sh*tty idea and withdrew his hand. "Well, your turn." Hopefully, both of them could come out of this unscathed.
