Dylan is, in a sharp contrast to his older sister Jen, rather well-adjusted and friendly, and is more willing to form connections with others than she is. Like Jen, and the rest of his family, Dylan has a strong faith in God, though he is rather reserved about showing it. He harbors a disdain for the constant danger that being a hunter brings, and struggles to keep his instincts when it comes to protecting himself in check due to his desire for a normal life. This same frustration with the hunter lifestyle caused a rift between himself and Jen, and he refuses to speak to her or acknowledge her existence since the deaths of their parents.
Since he was able to get out of the lifestyle of a hunter, Dylan has shown himself to be very compassionate and conscious of others, doing volunteer work for the less fortunate and those with special needs. He has a love for video games and keeps up with pop culture, unlike his sister, and also has a good work ethic, being able to pass high school and college with good grades.

Dylan Browning was born as the younger brother of Jen Browning in Wilmington, North Carolina. Like his sister, he was taught from an early age about his family legacy, and participated in his first hunt when he was eleven years old. However, unlike Jen, Dylan did not simply accept that the hunting lifestyle was his destiny, and this caused several arguments with his parents as he got older. Determined to get a good education so that he didn't have to survive as an outcast, Dylan studied and worked hard in school. This dedication to his classes paid off, and at age 17, Dylan was accepted into East Carolina University.
However, tragedy struck not long after this, with Jen contacting Dylan one day and informing him their parents had been murdered by the demon Lenarael, with Jen herself barely able to send him back to Hell. Dylan, infuriated and struck with grief, lashed out at Jen and laid into her, letting out his feelings regarding the family and their lifestyle, before telling her to never contact him again. After this event, Dylan gradually worked past his anger and grief, slowly returning to normal as he continued his work. After graduating from ECU at age 21, Dylan briefly traveled around North Carolina, looking for work, before eventually moving to Virginia, where he has found Mystic Falls.
