Melvin had a surprise. Melvin had a surprise. Melvin had a surprise.
No matter how many times Rin told herself that, it seemed ridiculous all the same. Melvin was... Melvin. Scheduled and planned out. Melvin didn't do surprises. Apparently he did, though.
She head up the stairs to the roof where he asked her to go. She took one last glance at the nondescript text he sent. It could have been anything. She finally opened the door to the fresh air and the sky bursting with bright warm sunset colours. It was pretty. But then unsettling nerves returned again and she sought out Melvin.
"I'm here," she called out for him.

Melvin didn’t do things on the fly. Even his surprise during Valentine’s day had been planned in advanced for months. He even knew that Rin knew something was up, and by the time the big day came, he already had her bags packed and her dress laid out. It wasn’t so much as a jump behind the couch going ‘surprise,’ but he felt it had a similar effect.
This time, well, a few things hadn’t gone as planned and a few things were just split-second decisions. It wasn’t like him, but when he was there, making his purchase, he just felt it was about time to let Rin into that world of his. She had been through enough, and he doubted he’d find too many people, if anyone on the island, he could share it with.
It was about time he took the big step.
A step to letting Rin in that much more. More than ever before.
He sent her a text, and since he didn’t know any private places, he decided the roof was best. It wasn’t exactly – picturesque, but it would have to make due. He wished he had more time to plan this sort of thing out, pick a better location, but he was already too nervous to really think about making a nice backdrop in hopes he got a favorable response.
His nerves were getting to him, and he turned the velvet jeweled case about in his pocket as he waited.
When she called out, he stiffened, and then took a breath. He adjusted his black-rimmed glasses, a temporary until he knew set were delivered, and turned, heading over to find Rin. She was already there, perky, bright, and expecting. He couldn’t disappoint and he hoped she wouldn’t be.
He walked slowly towards her. “Hey…thanks for coming” He looked around and towards a more open spot near the end of the roof. “Can we…hang over there a moment? I need to ask you something….some serious.”

Rin tried hard to not think about it. It was making her sick drawing that sort of conclusion. She followed his direction and moved as requested of her into place. Her hands were starting to tremble just a bit as she repeated over and over in her mind like a mantra.
This is Melvin. This is Melvin. This is Melvin. This is Melvin. This is Melvin.
It did nothing to calm her nerves.
Her heart was fluttering in her chest. Was she about to have a stroke too?

He looked around and then back at her, before taking off his glasses to clean them. “So…like…” He cleared his throat and put his glasses back on. Rin was looking at him and he knew he was taking too long between words.
“So we’ve been together for a while now, right?”

"Yeahhh?..." Oh s**t. Where the hell was this going?
She just stared at him blankly.

Oh good. They were on the same page. This was working and looking rather promising. Now he just had to make it so that what he said didn’t come out the wrong way to make things go badly – like they tended to do.
Just use as little words as possible and be direct. Okay? But considerate! Uh, maybe you should just stick to small words.
Small words.
“.. And we’ve been through a lot, right? More than normal people. I mean, more than even just friends.” They did sleep together, but then again, a lot of friends slept together. Some friends who later told you they slept with other friends and you wound up seeing both your friends in really different ways and –
MELVIN! Focus!
Oh right.

"Uh-huhhhh...." Rin's responses were elongated and drawn out the more she dreaded what was to come next. Melvin was thoroughly terrifying her at this point. She had no idea how to respond to... any of this. Not right now anyway.

He took a breath.
"So...we've gotten to know each other. I think - more than I got to know most people. Not just on the island." Mainly because he hadn't been dating anyone this long before aside from his one ex.
Get on with it.
He bent down and took Rin's hand.
"Rin..." He reached into his pocket, fishing for what he needed. "..will you..."
The velvet case was in one hand.

Rin's dread turned to outright fear. s**t. How was she going to let the poor dumb-a** down? There were so many reasons why this was the worst idea ever thought up. For one, her knee jerk feelings were outright disgust accompanied by terror. Like an animal being cornered by a s**t monster.
Then the worst question Melvin ever asked had begun and she was staring down the 'barrel' of a jewelry case.
She couldn't breathe, was this what it felt like to be dying? Yep. She was dying. He was killing her right now is what. Time was slowing down to a crawl around her. Perhaps now was the time to run like hell?

"Rin."
He looked up at her and took a breath again.
"Will you go to see Raging-Metal Twisted Glut-clencher with me this Saturday?"
He reached with the hand, still holding the cage, and checked his other pocket to pull out the two tickets.

Rin froze staring at him for what felt like eternity. Her gaze alone failed to sear a hole into his flesh as intended. Instead, she tugged her hand free of his and gave him a sharp swat across the back of his head.
She paused again and took a deep soothing breath.
"Of course I will you moron." A huge weight was lifted. She still eyed the box warily. "And what's that?" She pointed at it, uncertain she wanted to know.

She looked pissed.
She looked REALLY pissed.
Oh s**t. He shouldn't have asked. She was going to think he was an idiot for thinking she might even be remotely interested in going to that type of concert.
Then he was hit, and he grabbed the back of his head and looked up at her. "Hey, what was th-"
But he stopped when she agreed.
"R-Really?! You don't mind?" She didn't mind going with him, and - wait, why was she pissed before.
He rubbed the back of his head. "You didn't have to hit me though." He grumbled before looking at the box. "Oh, yeah." He popped the top of the case open and turned it about. Set upon the cushion of velvet was a pink sapphire and white diamond pendant on a pink-gold chain.
"We got sorta side-tracked during Valentine's Day, and I never go to give this to you. Here. Cause, you like flowers." Which was a rather plain explanation of the complexities of Rin's overall list of likes.

Rin chuckled uncontrollably. God, for a smart person he sure as hell was stupid. She gently pat her hand against his shoulder. "Of course I will go to a concert with you."
Then the box was being opened and she felt momentarily tense again until she saw the contents. Relief all around. Nothing was left to be of concern and so she stuck her neck out at him. "Put it on me?" One of the few things she still cannot do without two arms.

He rose up, expecting her to want to put it on herself, but remembered her arm.
Popping the necklace out, he placed the box in his jacket pocket and then slipped the necklace around her. He took a few minutes.
"Just....hold on......this.....stupid clasp..........okay I think - wait.....okay, it's on." He said, making sure it was actually clasped and then stepped back to look at her.
"Do you like it? I don't buy jewelry so I don't know if it clashes with anything or if it doesn't go with some type of shoe." He didn't get the rules of fashion that women seemed to inherently know. His rules were just, as long as it was clean, looked presentable, generally was comfortable, and covered his neck, then he wore it.

"Who the ******** do you take me for?" Rin asked appalled at his fashion-esque line of confusion. As if she went for any of that crap.
She looked down at her necklace admiringly. After her earrings, this was essentially the first piece of real jewelry she's ever had - most certainly the first ever gifted to her. On this merit alone, this was the best necklace to have ever existed.
"I like it," she confirmed and set it back down to rest against her chest.
"I also can't wait for this concert of yours. I've never seen live music like that before."
