Gunn got clear of the fire, the flames, and the fighting, and the Negaverse. Europa was an uneasy weight on her; she set the other senshi down as soon as they hit street level again. “That was a distraction,” explained Gunn breathlessly. “A ******** setup.” And she’d ******** fallen for it, while at the very edge of detection, something odd was going on. Possibly whatever the Negaverse had been trying to hide. She turned to Europa, observing again how the senshi favored her ankle. “Go home,” said Gunn, “you’re no use to me like this.”
Well, and she’d also hate for Europa to get actually hurt because Gunn determined she had to press on into danger in the line of duty. “Maybe get me Babylon,” she amended, not wanting to go in without backup. “Can you get home okay, Europa?”

“Well, we knew it wasn’t right going in,” Europa said, trying to comfort Gunn - although she knew that her efforts would probably be futile. It was better safe than sorry, though - at least that had been their logic. It could have been a lot worse. “Better a distraction than a trap,” she decided, although in that case, she was curious to know what it was a distraction from.
Her ankle was busted, though, and as sorry as she was to have proved a disappointment to Gunn, she didn’t disagree with being sent home. “Sorry,” she said. They’d cleared well away from the site of the battle, so she figured it was as safe a time as any to drop her henshin.
“I’ll catch a cab,” said Tallulah, pulling her phone out of the pocket of her jeans. “Nick will patch me up. I’ll text Babylon on the way, tell him to catch up. Where should I tell him to meet you?”

“s**t, he doesn’t have a phone.” And neither did she. Brilliant! Gunn chewed her lip for a moment, and then she groaned and put her face in her hands. “Okay, say… he should meet me…” Well, where did she meet everyone? “Times Circle Fountain. I’ll swing by and grab him when I get a second. If I don’t make that, he’s not stupid, tell him to follow the giant horde of Chaotic signatures.”
He’s not stupid was high praise coming from Eternal Sailor Gunn. Finn should be proud.
“Eur--Tallulah.” Europa had dropped her henshin. Minus one for Gunn’s poorly-tuned Negasense. “Next time we go into a fight, I need you to not hang back. But also, you did pretty okay, not counting the ankle thing. That General was reeling.”

“Okay,” said Tallulah. That would be an easy enough message to remember, and the location was distinct enough that she wouldn’t need to waste time telling Babylon where it was. And, the horde of Chaotic signatures would be a pretty big tip-off if all else failed.
“Thanks,” she added, blushing. Faint praise from Gunn was all that she could hope for, but it went a long way. “I’m sorry about the ankle thing, I was trying to get off the roof in a hurry.” She’d been hasty and careless, was what it was. “That last attack of mine’s a doozy,” Tallulah said, thinking back to how it had affected Leto and the captain she’d killed, in addition to tonight’s targets.
But she’d hung back, and in the end, that was the opposite of what would make her a good fighter. “You were incredible,” she said to Gunn. “Absolutely genius.”

She patted Tallulah’s shoulder, trying not to look like she was glowing at the praise. Incredible? Absolutely genius? Well, thanks, object of Gunn’s affections. Please make it a little harder to get over you, go on, Gunn will absolutely wait. She let herself smile a little. To maybe encourage Tallulah next time. “You just have to use it now,” she said. “We’ll practice jumping off things this Saturday if you come to the park.”
Then she sighed and said, “But no seriously, get home. Smooch your worry-wart boyf, or something.”

“Oh my god,” said Tallulah, embarrassed. She knew how to jump off things! This was just - okay, whatever. Gunn obviously didn’t mean ill by it. “Okay, yes, I’ll come to the park and we can do crazy parkour stunts or whatever you want to do.”
Which reminded her. “We need to get Oenone back up and ready to patrol, when things have settled down some,” she said. “He’s really frustrated about not being able to come with us tonight. He knows about being corrupted and he’s dealing with it really well and I think he’s ready for us to ease him back into things.”
With her phone, she searched the number of a local cab company.

“When things have settled down some,” Gunn said, which was not a promise or even a set deadline, but it was all she was willing to give. “Bring him to the next boot camp exercise. We’ll see how he does.”
