[Please note that this RP is only open to residents of Euclid Weyrhold. If you would like your character to have joined please alert Tawny and The Nozomi and their arrival can be backdated as necessary!]

It was late afternoon, the sky was clear and there was no Fall coming.

What was being set up was… well it couldn’t really be called a Gather, they didn’t have the resources for a gather. What it was though was gathering of people, a break from hard work for all of Euclid’s residents. There was fish, fruit, and bread to eat and beer to drink; all spread out on a long table for people to help themselves from.

What this gathering also was, was a sort of inauguration. Sort of. Natai was going to read the manifesto in public in any case, just to make sure everyone really did know where they stood.

Bereck perched on the edge of the makeshift dias where Natai was going to stand to make her speech, looking out over the expanse of cleared land. “A lot’s changed over the last turn,” he observed with a glance up to the gold rider. “Stating the patently obvious I know but…” Sometimes he’d wondered if they would ever get this far, he’d worried that it might fail and about what would happen to Natai and everyone who had committed to the early on move if it did. “It’s looking good,” he continued after a brief pause, “a long way to go yet but I can almost see where other craft buildings are going to go up, individual weyrs, crops in the fields….” The healer trailed off there and shrugged, looking up again with a small smile. “A lot better than a couple of tents, humm?”

__________________________

Bereck didn’t have too high to glance - Natai sat on the dias with her legs crossed as he looked back at her. The few inches she still had on the healer disappeared with the hunch of her shoulders and dip of her head as she studied the papers on her lap. Her bright orange skirt stretched and covered the entirety of her legs and made quite the nice resting area for rogue paperwork. A quill wavered in her grip, betraying her nerves despite Natais calm expression.

“I remember a single tent and a hole in the ground for storage.” Natai said with a faint smile. “You on the receiving end of my panicked letters and S’dekai the only cool head living here. Seeing as how he was half of the human population, well…” Her lips twitched into a smile that bordered on warm. “It’s a very good thing we have more people around. I’m quite fond of the barn. You still approve of the infirmary?”

And she no longer had the stomach clenching desire to get ill each time she thought of public speaking. Progress! Progress and a S’dekai she could still hide behind, a grouchy ageing Masterhealer, a large dragon that possesed enough enthusiasm to light up an entire Weyr. Natai glanced around and put the tip of her quill into a small bottle of ink near to her knee. “I hope no one minds the census taking.”

__________________________

“If they do mind they’re blithering idiots,” Bereck said with a dismissive ‘tch!’ and a wave of his hand. “It’s only sensible to know who we have here, officially. And the infirmary is good,” this was said with another small flash of a smile, “much better now it has my desk in it! Feels like home.” Work felt like home anyway and that was a start but he would be a lot happier when he and Alina had a place of their own again, communal living was not his favourite thing ever and that was a rather large understatement. Everyone was in the same boat on that however and there was nothing to be done about it so there was no point in complaining about it.

“It will be good,” he added, “you will be good. These people wouldn’t be here if they didn’t want to hear what you have to say. Euclid’s come a long way from one tent and a hole in the ground and you have too.” By necessity he supposed, necessity being the mother of invention or in this case personal growth in the face of having to fly all around Pern being diplomatic to the Master Crafters, to Holders, and ordinary holdfolk too.

It was amazing, how quickly Euclid had grown from an idea into an actual place.

He and Pioth had been busy; there had been a barn to raise (and he still slept in the hayloft of said barn, partly to deter livestock thieves and partly because he knew for a fact that the loft was warm and proof against the rain) and animals to acquire and tend, and Pioth had struck on the idea of making sand wallows for the dragons to sleep in, which had involved an awful lot of betweening back and forth between Euclid and a stretch of uninhabited beach, one tarpload of sand at a time. But it wasn’t as if they didn’t have time. With the usual rhythms of a Weyr (drills, Thread, drills again) not yet in place, S’dekai and Pioth had nothing to do except build Euclid into something like a home.

The bronzerider still hadn’t spoken to many of the new arrivals. He was… well, shy. Strange. Once upon a time he’d been the sort who would speak to every new face, seek them out, make them welcome. He still smiled when they passed, but… S’dekai was painfully aware that he was refugee from both Malvren and Trine. Both would consider him blood traitor, for different reasons, even if he’d never shed blood on behalf of either one. He belonged to Euclid now, and Euclid alone - nowhere else on Pern would take him and Pioth.

He finished looking over the table of food - not a Gather spread, but it might as well be one to the likes of these refugees - and headed back over to the dais where Natai and Bereck were gathered, leaning on it to catch his breath. “Anything else you lot need?” he called cheerily. “Otherwise I think we’re ready to go.”

__________________________

“My excitable and giggly public image has certainly changed.” Natai resisted snorting with a pleasant smile. “I’m not even fluttering around in ruffles. The world is absolutely shocked. But… the tent wasn’t so bad now that I’m not living in it.”

These days, she stayed in the barn if possible. … It wasn’t often possible but Natai didn’t often sleep. Moot point in the end. She sighed and put her chin on her palm, elbow on her knee, and fluttered the quill in her other hand. Her papers shifted when Natai glanced down at them, her leg bouncing a little.

“I’m glad you’re here now,” she said after a long moment. Natai looked up from her lap to the table of food and the oncoming S’dekai. She smiled at her friend and raised her hand to wave the quill at him in greeting. “With the food, the ridiculous paperwork - ah, I checked the seating and what we’ve built isn’t about to fall down around our head. The Weyrhold is prepared.” The quill bounced a little faster. “Are we? I would not hold it against you if you lied.”

Bereck nodded acknowledgement to S’dekai and Natai. “I think we’re as ready as we’ll ever be.”

Perchen

There was more work to be done, and would be for a while yet, and Perchen would like to be out doing it. But he understood the need for a bit of relaxation, and a chance for everyone to get together and socialize, to feel like a community instead of a collection of people who'd trickled in to the area over the past Turn or so.

He hadn't bothered putting on his Gather clothes, though. He only had the one set, and this wasn't precisely a formal event, so he stuck with his usual attire: workman's clothes, simple and purposeful, with his sleeves rolled up past the elbows and sturdy boots on his feet. His Master's knots were what mainly showed he was any different from any other man who wasn't afraid to do a little heavy labor. That and his wher, when the beast accompanied him. But since it was daytime and there was no work for Persk to do, he'd left the bronze wher asleep in his kennel back at the workroom.

Perchedn cast an eye around the gathering, noted that nobody seemed to be going for the food yet, and refrained from doing so himself. Natai and a few others were gathered at a bit of a stage at one side of the cleared area. He assumed that meant there would be some sort of announcement or discussion or something that would warrant the stage. So he stood with the crowd, hands in his pockets as he waited patiently for whatever was to be said.

Nikolai sat by the tables. He was all up for social gatherings but he wasn't exactly known here, he didn't have many friends here, in fact none at all. He had been proud to help start a new hold, allowing his creations to be the main structures and he wasn't even a master yet!

But it was somewhat lonely without his friends in Telgar or his family. Natai was nice enough, he found her particularly funny and cute and if he was a little younger and it didn't look like S'dekai or whatever his name was would kill him, he might ask her to dance later. But he was sure a young gold rider, not to mention a Weyrwoman would never say yes to a simple Journeyman like him. Though he didn't spend much time in a Weyr, he had been to one before to help his master so he knew of the hierarchy.

Nikolai glanced around, seeing a few people starting to gather around, he noticed why, with their leader Natai up by the stage. Maybe she would make a speech to get them started?

(*)

Mi'ca stayed closer to the edge of the 'Not-Gather' as he had taken to calling it in his head. Turoth wasn't comfortable with coming any closer and Mi'ca wasn't going to abandon his companion. They had been through too much as it was and he was going to stay close until they both were comfortable.

He was still surprised he had been let into this new Weyr, actually surprised that it was possible for there to be a new Weyr. He had been distressed to learn his home had been taken over by the revolution, probably most of his friends had been killed. Trine had survived but Mi'ca figured they would never take a black dragon rider after the revolution, especially someone who had lived as a rogue for so long AND was from Malvren. He sighed as he leaned against a post, his clothes still showed the life he had lived in the wild's of Trine. Sure it had been mended once he had joined Euclid, but it was patchwork and he wasn't proud of it, though it showed a life of necessity.

'Stop that.'

Mi'ca was drawn from his thoughts by his dragon. Turoth was laying low to the ground, his wings tucked against his body. His eyes whirling with his uncomfortable feelings. 'You look fine. We survived. It's all that matters.' The dragon said. He didn't even remember Malvren anymore. It had been so long since he had been in a Weyr or civilation of any kind and it showed with his uneasiness around the other people. Then again, Turoth had always been that way. Mi'ca smiled at his mount and patted his head, rubbing in the middle of his forehead. 'I'll be alright. I know you don't like people but we'll stay for just a while. Parties can be fun and this is our home now. We have to participate once in a while.'

Turoth snorted. 'Let's just go with the once part.' Mi'ca laughed and rubbed at his eye ridges. 'Just relax, if you don't like it, ywe'll go lay in the shade to watch. But we have to stay for a little while.'

'Fine.' Came the response along with a rumble of displeasure.

As Perchen waited, he looked over the gathered crowd. He didn't know everyone, since people were generally out doing their own tasks even when the comminity was new and small. As more people joined the weyrhold he expected there'd be even less chance he'd get to know everyone. But still, he could recognize the major figures, even if he didn't know them personally: the founders, chief administrators, any Masters of various crafts that had gathered, and anyone he'd worked with personally. He spotted one such young man sitting at one of the tables; a stonecrafter he'd collaborated with on a few projects. Since the events, whatever they may be, hadn't started yet, Perchen supposed he ought to take the time to be social. And if he happened to have a chance to talk shop with a fellow crafter, so much the better. He headed over to the table and stopped by the young man.

"Hello there. Nikolai, is it?" he greeted the Journeyman. "You've been doing fine work around the weyrhold."

Nikolai looked up as he was walked over to and he gave" the man a friendly smile, he remembered him as Perchen, one of the men he had worked with so far to build several of the buildings. "It is." He said in reply. "Thank you for the compliment, you're help has been apprieciated very much with all the new buildings." He gestured to the barn and such with a soft smile. "Why don't you sit down?" He offered. "This really is a good day for a Gather, despite the fact it's not really a gather."

This was said to Turoth by a tiny sleek spotted blue as he spiralled neatly down to land nearby the black.

C'tis released himself from the riding harness and slid neatly to the ground, giving his dragon's shoulder a solid slap before stretching out and rolling his shoulders. "I miss anything?" he asked of the nearby blackrider.

Perchen nodded back and accepted the offered seat. It was more polite than standing over the person he was talking to, after all. He glanced at the indicated buildings around them, though he knew they quite well. He'd overseen the construction, if not actually designed, the majority of them. "Yes, sound work all around," he agreed. "We're lucky so many people have come who are willing and able to assist with the construction."

As to the event...he looked over at the stage again, but nothing new seemed to be going on there yet. "It's good to give people a chance to relax now and then. Plenty has been done, and there's plenty more to do, but a bit of rest and downtime will lift everyone's spirits and renew their energy."

Mi'ca looked up as a shadow passed over while Turoth watched up and shifted closer to Mi'ca as an instinct to protect his rider when the dragon landed nearby.

Mi'ca glanced over seeing the rider slide down, "Not a thing. They just set up and Natai looks like she's busy." He pointed to the stage. He looked over the rider, "You're... from Trine right?" He asked.

Meanwhile Turoth eyed the bright blue and shied away from the larger dragon. He may be older, but he just wasn't a large dragon. Mi'ca kept his hand on his dragon's neck to keep him close, 'Go ahead and talk.' He urged the black.

Turoth rumbled and looked at the blue again. 'I'm Turoth.' He answered simply. He still didn't like this idea of a party and had he not a need to keep Mi'ca safe, he would go rest in the shade by himself.

"It is quite nice, it's something that's sometimes hard to find at larger holds. Everyone wants to keep to themselves, not be too involved in anything, especially noweredays."

He looked around again. "It is a good way to keep morale up, maybe in a year or two, we'll be large enough to have a real one." He grinned, "Then again, this smaller idea is more...intimate I guess is the word." He shrugged. "Though we might need more room if the dragons are going to be around." He glanced at the two large dragons across the way.

C'tis nodded, scowling deeply as was his wont when thinking. "Hu, right. And... yes I suppose I am. I grew up in Malvren but got displaced during the Revolution. Shaffing bastards." He was going to end up living with some people who'd fled that 'cause' in all likliehood. A turn ago he would have sympathised with them but now? No. Not now. Not ever, not after what they'd done to Rochelle. If any former Wherholders wanted to earn his trust they could shove it where the sun didn't shine.

"What about you?" C'tis added with a note of suspicion. "I don't recognise either of you." Maybe they'd come from one of the other Weyrs, that would be understandable given how they treated any atypes that somehow managed to hatch. 'Runts'. 'Freaks'. Benden and Weyr's like it had needed shaking up, shells Trine did but not like Keller had done.... And that, of course, was why he was here. A new start. A new chance.

Malcarreth replied, sounding rather amused.

Mi'ca stared at C'tis for a moment after he mentioned Malvren. He grew up there? But Mi'ca didn't remember him in any of the ranks, then again, it had been nearly what? 6 turns or so?

"I'm from Malvren too." He said after a moment. "I had to flee with Turoth during the revolution when it fell." He paused, unsure how the other rider would feel when he told him he had been living in the wilds. Not everyone seemed to like that. "I lived in the Trine jungles until I found this place and Natai let me stay."

He glanced at Turoth when he felt his dragon's uncomfortable feelings. His eyes were whirling between uncertainty and annoyance. 'I don't like to talk.' The black dragon looked at the larger blue and then at Mi'ca.

The rider understood. 'Go on, go sit in the shade. I'll stay in sight.' The black dragon nodded, his eyes still whirling with uncertainty and he lumbered off to the shade of the trees, able to see Mi'ca easily. He didn't know if the blue would follow him. He wasn't used to interaction with other dragons that he could remember and he wasn't so used to being so far from Mi'ca. It made him nervous.
