Caspian shut his eyes with contentment. His head rested on a rock above the water, but the rest of his body was submerged in the sluggishly flowing river. Finally he'd found a new place to settle. He'd been here for over a week without anyone attacking him, declaring this to be their territory, or otherwise spooking or harassing him. He had been on the move for months, so it was delightful to finally be able to rest.
Sharp sunlight beat down on the river, heating the rock he rested on and making the water just feel delightful. The weather was a little strange this year. After a long winter, it seemed as if they had only a bare few days of spring before moving into the heat of summer. Even the flowers seemed confused, blooming brightly one day but then wilting in the heat the next.

Lacey was also new to these waters... relatively. She used to live upstream but had let herself drift downstream when the hunting became poor. She hadn't seen any other alligators in this branch of the river yet, a good sign. Maybe the animals wouldn't be prepared for swift death coming from the water.
A certain idiot soquili certainly wasn't prepared. He was very lucky that she had eaten well the previous day, otherwise chomping him would have been pathetically easy. For the better part of an hour he'd been resting with his head on a rock... right next to where she floated apparently unnoticed. Eventually growing irritated with his unconcern, she decided it was time to alert him to her presence.
"Are you always this stupid?"

That was funny, it sounded like there was someone in the water next to him. He definitely would have noticed if another kelpi had swam up next to him. Blinking to his side, Caspian suddenly noticed something. That log that he had been resting next to this whole time... wasn't a log. It was a certain aquatic reptile, covered in thick scales and with red eyes glaring. Caspian did what he always did when something unexpected and vaguely frightening happened... he panicked.
"H-hey!" he yelped as he scrambled through the water away from the gator. How long had it been there? Was it going to attack him? It looked awfully big... and with awfully sharp teeth protruding from its upper jaw...
