Mardi ~~~
Mardi had to admit, it finally looked like things were on the upswing for her, socially. After a social dry spell that had lasted weeks, if not longer, she had almost literally tripped across a like-minded mare who was just as hard-up for conversation as Mardi herself. The interlude that followed their meeting had been a blast of fun, filled with laughter and lively conversation, and even a few games. The only thing that could have made the day better would have been a few more Soquili; preferably a few male Soquili to add spice to the gathering, but Mardi had never been particular when it came to crowds. As far as she was concerned, bigger was always better, whatever the makeup.
It had been a pity when Mardi said good bye to her new friend, but they had solemnly promised to look each other up soon, preferably with more potential friends in tow. After all, they[/i[ had obviously hit it off well; it stood to reason that any additional Soquili they each got along with would also get along with the other. Brilliant logic, and a great recipe for a party.
Mardi sighed wistfully, reflecting on how long it had been since she'd enjoyed a true party. She couldn't blame the Soquili of the Kawani lands for not feeling the party spirit, but life sure had taken a nose dive in the entertainment department lately!

Serotia ~~~
For her own part, Serotia was feeling a lot less hopeful. She'd never considered herself much of a 'clannish' imp; back when they'd all been locked in the cave, she'd been thoroughly sick of the whole lot of her species. However, sometimes getting what you want meant you later learned you didn't want whatever you'd gotten nearly as much as what you'd had to begin with, and Serotia was no exception. After spending a few months floating aimlessly around the region, she hadn't seen anything or anyone to truly grab her interest and pull her into conversation and a new life. Instead, she found herself thinking back wistfully to the time in the cave, where there had always been pranks, laughs, and the promise of fun.
She'd made her way back to the cave, half-hoping that some other like-minded imps had made there way back and were looking for some company. What she wouldn't give these days for a good game of Sparks! But the cave had been depressingly, bleakly, barrenly empty; apparently she was the only one who had felt any sense of nostalgia for the cave.
Well, bother.

Mardi ~~~
There wasn't really any rhyme or reason to Mardi's Soquili search pattern. Having never had wings and having spent minimal time in her life around Soquili with wings, she felt none of the admiration of pining for wings that so many grounded Soquili seemed to have. However, as a hawk circled high in the sky above, she couldn't help but acknowledge that it would be a lot easier to find someone if she could fly. Not only did you have the higher vantage point, it seemed that flight was a hell of a lot faster than walking, or even running. If she had wings, she might have found some company ages ago.
However, she had no wings, and there was no point in wishing for what simply couldn't be. So she wandered around in a somewhat aimless fashion, weaving hither and yon up hills and down hills, through the small groves of trees that dotted the edge of any water source, and poking her nose into every cave and crevice that caught her eye. It seemed as good a strategy as any to the mare, though she had to admit the fact she hadn't found anyone was making her reevaluate her options.
"Hrm..."
She was ambling up a hill, her brow furrowed and her lips set in thought. Obviously she needed to consider a change to her methods, but what was the best way to go about doing tha-
"Hey!"

Serotia ~~~
Serotia had been dozing near the top of a hill, blissfully unaware that she was in imminent danger of being stepped on until it was simply too late. She'd never been a particularly attentive creature, and her natural obliviousness was made even worse by the fact she was tired and feeling a wee bit grouchy. Though really, why shouldn't she be feeling grouchy? It wasn't like she had anything going on to cheer her up, like a fellow imp to talk to or play Sparks with, or the prospect of a fellow imp crossing her path any time soon. She had been morose and moody ever since leaving the cave, a full week after making her way back that direction to begin with, and when she finally dozed off it had been in the midst of a fretful, fitful huff.
Needless to say, having a Soquili wake her up by stepping on her tail was not the most pleasant situation, and she was in no mood to be charitable as she shot into wakefulness. "Hey! Watch where you're going, you great lummox! Can't you see I'm trying to sleep here?" Shooting to her feet, Serotia fixed the culprit in the steely glare of her narrowed eyes. It was certainly a fierce look on its own, but it probably would have been more effective in a slightly larger body.

Mardi ~~~
"Whoa, sorry!" Mardi was truly contrite to have stepped on the little mare, and at the same time a bit amazed that she'd managed to miss seeing a creature so incredibly...well, dramatic! True, she had been coming up the hill from the other side, and the little mare had been lying down just past the crest; but still, you'd think that anything that incredibly purple would have stood out like a beacon! Mardi wasn't usually one who enjoyed insults, either giving or receiving, but in this circumstance she had to admit that the 'lummox' comment was probably deserved.
So despite the provaction to promptly go on the defensive, Mardi instead gave the little mare a wide, apologetic smile. "Really, I AM sorry. I guess my head was so far up in the clouds that I didn't notice what was going on near my feet, which is crazy when you think about how important it is to know what the terrain is like underfoot. Especially since I don't have wings, I ought to know the importance of looking where I step by now. But anyway, I'm rambling; the important thing is, would you forgive me?"
And truth be told, Mardi REALLY hoped the mare would forgive her, because she was unlike anything Mardi had ever seen before and the yellow mare was truly fascinated! She didn't just want to be forgiven; she wanted to be friends!

Serotia ~~~
Having woken up on the offensive, Serotia was expecting that this little interaction would rapidly spiral into a fight. It had been her experience that regardless of the situation, no Soquili enjoyed being accused of idiocy, even when the accussation was completely accurate! It might have been foolhardy of Serotia to shoot off her mouth before seeing exactly who it was she was talking to, but she would have been willing to step up and fight regardless of who the opponant was.
So it was a bit unexpected when the yellow mare, instead of getting angry, laughed the insult off and actually accepted the blame! Serotia had been so revved up and ready to fight that having the mare admit she was in the wrong had thrown her for a loop, leaving her scrambling to determine the appropriate response. A fight might have been easier, but it really wasn't feasible any more!
"I, er, well, that is...don't mention it. Just watch where you're going next time, sleepers have the right to sleep without getting stepped on. And really, what's so all-fired important to be thinking about it at the expense of everything else?" There, that seemed a valid response!

Mardi ~~~
Yay, crisis averted, and prospect of friendship was still open! Whatever else the little purple mare was, she was obviously a very frank and honest little creature, and Mardi could appreciate that. Sure, the little mare had been a bit preemptive where insults were concerned, but Mardi HAD stepped on her tail. Having a hair tail herself, Mardi had no idea what it felt to have someone step on any other kind of tail, but if it felt anything like having one's ears stepped on, then Mardi just ought to consider herself fortunate she'd ONLY been called a lummox!
And it seemed like the purple mare was calming down, if still a little grouchy. But Mardi could work with grouchy; it was 'angry' that was the true problem! At the purple mare's grumpy comment, Mardi nodded herself, agreeing that yes, it ought to be an important thought to be so distracting indeed! "You're right, of course, and I honestly can't say that my thoughts were important enough to account for my distraction. I hope you laugh at this, because I'm the first to admit how ridiculous my thoughts were in light of our little interaction...but I was just thinking how depressingly empty this region was, and how there was absolutely no one to talk to!"

Serotia ~~~
Yup, the yellow mare was right; that was a ridiculous thought to be having while stepping on someone else. Serotia wasn't sure if she ought to be amused or offended; after all, the implication was that she wasn't anyone, especially seeing as how she'd been stepped on! Still, as she looked in the direction the mare had come from she could see how it would have been easy to miss seeing Serotia until the hill had been crested, as which point it would have been late to make any other move. In retrospect, Serotia had not done a very good job in choosing a spot to take a nap, even if the breeze there HAD been lovely earlier in the day.
Oh well, nobody was perfect.
Serotia still wasn't in much of a mood to laugh, but she did crack a wry smile at the yellow mare, whose enthusiasm and good spirits were oddly contagious. "Well, I would say the irony gods have gotten their hit for the day; you wanted conversation, you got me. I might be little, but I do have a mouth on me and I can talk, so since we're not fighting..." She paused, cocking her head to the side and surveying the larger mare before asking, "What's your name?"

Mardi ~~
Whoops, and now where had her manners gotten to? The little mare might still be a little on the surly side, but things were definitely going Mardi's way now and she was going to enjoy them. Giving her new friend a wide smile, Mardi chuckled and said, "Mardi! My name is Mardi, and I'm pleased to make your acquaintance, even if it wasn't in the nicest way. I'd love to hang out and talk with you, or we could walk and talk, if you'd prefer. All I ask in return is your name, and your patience."
This last was said with a conspiratorial wink, as though begging the purple mare to ask why patience was needed. And in truth, it was a beg; Mardi wanted this conversation to go well, and that meant she needed to pique and hold the little mare's interest. It was hoped that the conversation itself would do that, but she might as well help it along in the beginning.

Serotia ~~~
'All she asked in return?' Well, if that wasn't just the cutest thing ever, Serotia thought with a slight grimmace. It was awfully early in the day to be so perky; she had her moments of perkiness herself, but it was always much, much later. And she tended to know when to 'pick her perk'. Whatever else she was, this yellow mare did not appear to be the sort who knew the meaning of 'tact.' Or, if not tact, then she at least didn't know the skill of reading her audience. If Serotia had been the one who literally stumbled over a sleeping grouch, then Sero wouldn't have stuck around wanting to walk and talk, or make friends. But Sero was clearly not this mare.
Really, it wasn't such a bad idea, talking. Hadn't Sero been thinking that there was nothing around worth getting involved with? Hadn't she gone to sleep because it seemed like the best choice out of her limited options? So since she had nothing better to do, then why wouldn't she want to give the other mare a chance? Yes, they'd had a bad first impression, but it wasn't insurmountable. And the yellow mare...Mardi...seemed willing to try to start over. Serotia wasn't an unpleasant creature, and she wasn't an unreasonable creature; she could do this.
So she dismissed the uncharitable thoughts and the desire to go back to sleep, instead giving Mardi a long, thoughtful look as she rose to her feet. Even including her headwings, she barely came up to Mardi's stomach; they made an odd, if colorful, pair. "Well, I'll give you the name as a starter; we'll have to see how much you provoke me before I decide on the patience thing. But my name is Serotia," she said with a slight nod; "You can call me Sero, if you'd like. Apparently a little bit of a thing like me needed a little bit of a nickname growing up." She even managed a slight chuckle at that; awkward as this encounter had started, perhaps there was hope that it would work out for her! While it was true that Mardi was no Imp, she was still company.
Besides; it might be a good thing that Mardi was no Imp. She might not even be familiar with Imps, and that meant...
Her mind was now racing a mile a minute, and Serotia couldn't hide the wide, mischievous grin that was now spreading across her face. Like all good imps, there was nothing she loved as much as mischief; and who better to enact some mischief against than an unsuspecting soul? Yes, she thought as she surveyed Mardi's beaming face, this could end up working out very well indeed. "But I promise you I'll give being a patient my best try. You DID wake me up from a nap, after all, so there might be some random crabbing. But I'll do my best," she said in the same serious tone. If only her grin weren't quite so pronounced, she might even have pulled that seriousness off!
