Niabi stood in the trees of Chibale, having returned once more after her trip outward into Jauhar. She was contemplating just permanently living in Chibale now that she was a blade. Her mothers were still in Andile of course, but she might like the change of living on her own. She shook her head and tried to get back into what she was supposed to be doing at that moment. The elders in Chibale had called out to more than a few of the younger Sisters to go out and gather food for the feast tonight. After the war spirits had been low in the villages and good food seemed to be all they needed right now. Maglardilla seemed to be on the menu, though they still needed to procure the thick, juicy goodies. Niabi smiled a small smile at the idea of maglardilla meat. Though she still didn’t know if she would be able to get up the guts to kill anything, she knew that the meat was sweet and juicy and something of a treat for the Alkidike. It would make for a good night if they could actually get any.
Niabi lifted her head and looked through the low branches she stood on. Normally she didn’t like to go up into the canopy, and hated having her feet so far into the air, but the maglardilla only spent their time up in the trees of Jauhar and Chibale, so up she went. The other Sisters that had gone with her were already up ahead. They still didn’t look at Niabi as an equal, that much was for certain, but they treated her better than they had before her trials. They saw that she could be a warrior now. That she didn’t flinch from her bow and she had the guts to do what it took in a sticky situation. She gripped the bow that was in her hand and touched the bottom of the quiver hanging from her shoulders. It felt better now with practice. She had a few battles under her belt since she had been given the bow, and while she didn’t win a single one, she had gained confidence that she so sorely needed. She felt so behind her other Sisters in training and it was almost something of an embarrassment now.
Once more she shook her head and tried to focus. Time for getting lost in thought later. Now is the time to hunt, she had to tell herself. She put one foot in front of the other and took a slow step forward, trying to get her bearings and see where she should go next. Her eyes fixed on some fluttering in the distance. Was that her target? She silently padded forward on her bare feet, feeling the hard and rough bark under her. The branches were large, more than large enough that she had no need to worry about falling off if she could just keep her steps steady. She was nearly counting her steps at this point, using it to steady her heart beat and move forward.
The closer she got to the shimmering, the better she could see that she had been right. A group of maglardilla seemed to be buzzing and flitting around the sap that poured from a burrow hole they had made. They were hungry too it seemed. Maybe the sap would make them sweeter. Niabi didn’t know if that was a thing, but the thought of it made her mouth water. She swallowed, knowing she needed to not only be swift, but she needed to get the courage to end something’s life. Maybe more than one thing, and it would happen very soon. She looked up towards the sun that barely filtered through all of the leaves and saw the spots stick to her eyes. She blinked them out, reorienting herself and reminding herself that she needed to do this for the tribe, for her Sisters, and that she had no qualms about eating the meat when it wasn’t her doing the killing so she should be able to do this. Earn her keep. That was the way she tried to think about it, to justify it. And it worked. She brought the bow up and strung and arrow, drawing it back to her chin. She breathed in a deep breath through her nose before she focused in on one of the bugs and in an instant it was pinned to the tree, shot straight through its shell. When its wings stopped their buzzing and its eyes went dim and lifeless it seemed to alert that others that something was wrong. The other maglardilla fluttered into a confused frenzy, not leaving the area, but not staying in one spot. It was like they couldn’t decide whether to leave their dead friend or not. Niabi took a few quick steps forward, wobbling slightly before getting her balance and notching another arrow. She needed to be quick about it. She took a fast breath in, held her bow steady for two counted seconds and released. The arrow went wide and stuck into the side of the tree’s surface, causing more sap to pour out slowly. The maglardilla buzzed and flicked and started to move away. Niabi frowned, quickly notching one more arrow and letting it fly into a second maglardilla. By that point, the other three had left and flown away, realizing that sticking around was death and Naibi put her bow away.
She trotted forward over knots and leaves toward her kill. It was a weird feeling, but she felt a strange pride knowing that she wouldn’t be coming back empty handed for once. She carefully removed her arrows from the bark, laying the two maglardilla on the branch next to her while she cleaned her arrowed and put them back in the quiver. She maglardilla were large, and she still wasn’t sure how she was going to get them back home, but she would do it. She was confident enough about that.
