Strategically positioned between two reputable businesses, a loose board rests over trestle legs, weighed down by a jug of water on both ends. The makeshift table is more long than wide, with ample room for the cups to be shifted behind and in front of each other.

The old adage encourages to never judge a book by its cover. Looking at the man overseeing this game, most would wonder if he could even read it. His appearance is slovenly; he's overdue a haircut, dead ends brittle and curling, and his unimpressive attire has been stitched, patched, and probably transferred ownership at least once. Yet a distinct waft of mint, albeit faint, pervades the air around him. The lines on his face and the stubble dotting his chin and cheeks allude to him being older than a mere 18 years. He's several inches shorter than a majority of his peers, but he gives the impression of greater stature, his expression proud and his hauteur fit for a king, not the peasant he is.

A firm believer wealth begets wealth, Levent is thankful he's rich in wit and equipped with a silver tongue. He wastes no time and spares no effort in beckoning everyone over to his table, be they man, woman, or child. His hands move with impressive agility and near flawless accuracy, and so far, most visitors have walked away empty-handed.

He spots you lingering nearby and grins like a cat with canary feathers sticking from its teeth. "Care to try?" he queries, and before you've even answered, he rolls the rubber ball under the middle cup.

OOC:

• The game is simple to the point of being self-explanatory: A small rubber ball is placed under one of three cups. Levent, swift of hand and swifter of mind (the latter being a matter of opinion, really), will shuffle the trio of cups around and around. Don't go thinking you'll be able to tell based on the noise the ball makes, because he'll be chattering or clicking his tongue all the while.

• I will randomize a number 1-3. The character's player then does the same. If the numbers match, the character has chosen the correct cup. IC, they will be given... their choice of cups. They're nice cups, mind you; ornate, yet sturdy. Levent knows a guy who owns a home goods store he's borrowed some inventory from. "Borrowed."

• All plays must be accompanied by an RP post.

• All participants will be raffled for the Tailor Ticket at the end of the event, regardless of whether or not their character succeeded in the game.

Shun's mouth was still burning from that damn curry. He really tried not to be picky when it came to food, but it still needed to be edible as far as he was concerned. And that dish was like eating liquid flame. Quite frankly, he wouldn't be surprised if he had burned off his taste buds as a result of that ordeal. Damn that girl, Danny.

At least there was no sign of her for now. While he sought out something to drink, he paused as he spotted one rickety booth that had some jugs of water. Well, that would do. He didn't care that this didn't look quite as reputable as the others around.

He peered at the ornate cups, along with the rubber ball. Now, he was leery. Given his own upbringing, he was aware that this sort of game was one liked by various con artists. Crossing his arms, he looked over the other man. He didn't really feel like 'playing' anything. But perhaps he could get some water out of this.

"Sure. Fine. If I win, I get some water, alright?" he offered, glancing towards the jugs of water.

Water? Levent spared a cursory glance to the container on his left, his mind and his mouth working in tandem. Those jugs had seen more of this district than most people he knew. He'd never thought to change the contents when they were essentially used as weights; the water inside would be stale, maybe even sour, but it was probably potable. "If that's what you want," he agreed, grinning. "I'll even throw in a cup. "

Regardless of whether or not the joke hit the mark for his one-man audience, Levent placed his hands on the two end cups, offered a jovial smile to his guest, then got started. The ball rolled around beneath its prison in the middle — no, the right — the left? — the middle again? Levent spoke only as loud as necessary to help drown out the noise, keenly watching the player instead of the game. Some people distracted easy if you stared at them long enough. "How are you liking the festival so far?"

Shun raised his brow at the offer of a cup. He didn't really want a cup. He'd be stuck carrying the damn thing all day otherwise. But in any case, he shrugged, then watched the man move the three cups around. He did his best to try and keep track of the one he believed to hold the ball.

"It's a bit of a pain in the a** so far," he muttered. He had managed to get a free meal earlier but he wasn't so sure that outweighed the other things that had transpired thus far.

Once the other man had stopped moving them about, he pointed towards the center cup.

"Can't expect anything less given the hosts," Levent chortled just as the cups settled in a mostly straight line. Compelled to add something more akin to gratitude, and as if reading Shun's thoughts, he pointed out, "Can't beat free food, though." Happenstance prompted by his own daydreams of the upcoming banquet. Fresh bread, cooked meat, fruits and vegetables that weren't rotten or soft...

Back in the present reality, Levent lifted the indicated cup. The empty space beneath it spoke for itself. "Sorry, not this time," he offered none the less, and he'd barely finished apologetically wheezing the final word through sallow teeth than he was reaching under the table for a different (and actually clean) cup with one hand, the left jug with his other. "But far be it by me to deny a man water, especially one who looks like he could use something better. Maybe I should start filling these things with wine."

Shun gave a curt nod at that, "Indeed. That's for certain." Quite frankly, he probably wouldn't have bothered with the festival if there wasn't any food involved. There wasn't really much the city could offer the likes of him otherwise. Or rather much they would be willing to give. Things might be different otherwise.

He scoffed lightly as the cup he picked turned out to be the wrong one. Either there was a trick to this or he had simply failed to track the cup properly. It didn't really matter to him either way.

As the other man reached under the table, he raised his brow.

"I would pass on the wine, really," he uttered, "But... thank you."

Some time much later, Danny and Rikki had gotten separated from Shun (most likely when he went to drop off his military papers), and were wandering the festival on their own.

A rather seedy looking character emerged asking to play a game, and Danny, being the naive, excitable puppy that she was, tugged Rikki over without his approval to play.

"I want to try! I want to play!" she demanded of the man, seating herself around his table. "Do the thing!!"

Rikki stumbled as he was dragged along and eyed the cups warily. He'd seen a number of shady characters offer this very same game for a price, and somehow there was always a trick involved.

But what could be the harm if the game was free? They weren't losing anything. "I want to play too, after she does."

"Don't worry about it." In his experience, the less you had, the more there was to go around. He slid the cup across the table, its contents warm and liable to coat Shun's mouth with a rusty aftertaste. It would suffice to appease his parched throat and battered tongue, though.

Levent bid him adieu when a trio of curious potential players came within earshot. "See you around," he said, tacking on a final, good natured grin. "Don't have too much fun out there."

Several other people had come and gone by time the boisterous young lady sat before him and issued her demands. If he'd noted Rikki's suspicions, and most likely he had, he showed no signs of being outwardly tetchy about it. Instead, Levent nodded to him, welcoming as any ruffian could hope to be. He even looked sympathetic — in the amused sort of way — when Danny's attention was hopefully averted toward the presently mobile cups.

Girlfriends could be pushy and his heart went out to the guy.

This time, he didn't bother with idle chatter or distractions. The noise the board made being jostled by movement was plenty loud enough. Following Shun's lead, he'd poured some water for himself, and the half-empty jug on the left didn't secure the uneven board quite as well anymore.

Soon he instructed, "Take your pick," and his left hand lingered in the air above the cups as he awaited Danny's choice.

Danny was intent on discovering which cup had the ball in it. She even went so far as to lean over the table and grip the edges with white knuckles. THIS WAS SERIOUS. THIS WAS A BALL IN A CUP.

When all was said and done, she tapped the cup on the center. "This one. It's this one." She patted Rikki on the chest and nodded, saying, "Watch it's gonna be this one."

The guy was actually... really quick. Rikki couldn't keep his eye on the cups as the moved around, so he had no freaking clue where the ball had gone.

He laughed at Danny's enthusiasm. "I hope so. Maybe you'll win something cool." He squinted at the cup in question, willing the ball to be under it.

It wasn't that one.

Levent upturned the remaining pair, one at a time. He grabbed the ball before it rolled off the table and held it pressed between two fingers and his thumb. When he was sure he'd caught Rikki's eye, he placed it beneath the middle cup and started the game again.

"You look like the lucky sort." His hands rested on either side of the table and glanced up at Rikki through a curtain of unkempt bangs. "What'll it be?"

Danny crossed her arms in displeasure. It had TOTALLY BEEN THAT ONE. The guy must have had magic powers and moved it.

There was no other explanation.

"Good luck," she said, leaning on the table to examine the cups very carefully. Even if she was out of the running, she still wanted to see if she could get it right this time.
