The bonfire crackled and popped, the orange flame dancing with the yellow in dominance to the sky. It was fairly high, almost as high as the stallion, but not yet to his satisfaction. It must be taller than him, much taller than him. The wisest follower would have piled the wood before lighting it and thus had plenty of time to create a wonderful fire worthy of driving the darkness away. Kia, on the other hand, had lost time hunting the right wood. The darkness was closing in. He could see it creeping from the shadow of the trees to his left as the sun set on his right. Only the best trees for this fire, oh yes.
What was special about this fire? This fire had to be big and burn the brightest for tonight there would be no moon. The dreaded one night of the month where the darkness was at its strength and the unnamed God stole into the shadow of everyone in the world. Only by lighting the largest fire once every 30 days could he be kept at bay until the moon hid once more. It was days such as this that Kia almost hated his duty. The duty he had to bare alone until more followers could be obtained. But most in this land didn't seem keen on following his God. He was unknown to most. To them they merely seen a stallion with large wings. He could do nothing more spectacular than the leaders of the scattered herds. Not yet, at any rate. This world was strange and the fall did strange things to Stars. Until such a time arrived, Kia would do his best to make it come closer. Even if it meant more months of carrying wood by himself.
With the flick of a hind leg another branch was tossed onto the fire. The woods around them were not as giving of their wood as they had been a few nights past. The Dark One would not want the fire to burn. Of course this was his doing, stealing the wood so Kia had to venture deeper and deeper into the growing darkness to find it. Life and death was nothing but a game to him.
