User ImageThe library was a silent place, no footsteps echoed, no pages turned. Nothing. It was the height of day, the stillest time, and not a soul stirred. The shadows were few, thankfully. The place seemed abandoned, save for one thing. It was not dusty. There was very little breeze, and nothing else that could really account for the lack of dust. The lack of much of anything. Except the books, of course, and the fixings. The furniture. The trappings that said that once... once people HAD been here. A book on a railing, abandoned. It looked like an old weather worn journal in deep blue. Books on the shelves, lined up, ready to be loved and read. Books stacked on the tables, as though someone had been reading and then just... left. Lights on, lights on everywhere. So many signs that there had been people until recently, but no signs where they had gone.

There was a huge rounded counter, in the central building. Clearly it had been the main check out and information area, once. A sculpture stands near it, very like modern art, a tall rounded obelisk of pale stone that would be as tall as a grown human, and from it issued a thin metal rod and atop that a smaller rounded obelisk, a little larger than a human head, but far flatter. Beside it sat a Computer terminal, the screen lit blue with an odd red logo.

There seemed to be little else of note except a feeling in the air, a mixture of terror, pain... and hunger. The feeling that a predator was near. But still.... nothing stirred.

"Come on, Atlantis! It's not going to be there forever you know!"

Risika was hell bent on discovering this old forgotten library. She'd learned of it through a collection of unsolved mysteries she'd found through the internet. Being the researcher she was, she had to find out. What could be better than this? It was an old forgotten library! She squealed with delight at the possible knowledge that lay within.

User Image Atlantis cringed. If Risika was good about anything, it was trouble. Not always intended trouble, but trouble none the less. He followed behind her, quietly at first, hand/hoof clutching his spear as though it'd do any good. Their families were close.... all 5 of them. The Phantoms, the Goblins, the Macaans, the Necrons and the Melniboneans. Now, he was going to be responsible for an old vampiress.... If Risika's sister didn't have his hide, his father surely would.

"What exactly are you looking for? And what if there are spirits?"

"Why do you think you're here? I may fair on my own but I can't exactly talk to a ghost, now can I?" She poked her tongue at him over her shoulder before bounding off in excitement. Up the stairs she went and to the large doors. She inhaled deeply, breathing in the old, musty smell of wood that had gone untreated, unloved. She pouted a moment.

"No love what so ever. Poor thing." She caressed the doors as if they alone could tell her so much! They couldn't of course... Still, her mind wandered at the possibilities that were inside.

Atlantis rolled his eyes before looking at the structure. "This doesn't look safe..." He took a deep breath and let it out. Most spirits didn't bother him. Poltergeists? That was something he worried a little about.

As they entered, the odd bisected monolithic sculpture by the counter moved. Or rather, the top part did. It rotated until they were looking at, not a flattened rounded grey stone, but the face of a pony protruding from a flattened rounded grey stone. "I am Courtesy Node seven one zero slash aqua. Please enjoy the Library and respect the personal access codes of all your fellow readers, regardless of species or hygiene taboo," the sculpture informed them in a monotone male voice. "Additional. There follows a brief message from the Head Librarian for your urgent attention. It has been edited for tone and content by a Felman Lux Automated Decency Filter. Message follows. Run. For God's sake, run. No way is safe. The library has sealed itself, we can't. Oh, they're here. Argh. Slarg. Snick. Message ends. Please switch off your mobile comm. units for the comfort of other readers. Following that are two other messages, the first message carries a Felman Lux coherency warning of five zero eleven. The second additional message is from the Doctor. Do you wish to hear the messages?" the toneless voice asked, the eyes on the dismembered face making eye contact with neither of them, but looking somewhere between them.

before Atlantis could do or say anything, Ris pushed the button to continue the messages. Her eyes were lit up in excitement and is that hunger?

Atlantis winced as he listened to message. It was ominous and that didn't bode well. To often, the curious poke around things they shouldn't poke around. "I've got a bad feeling about this..."

"Message follows. Count the shadows. For God's sake, remember, if you want to live, count the shadows. Message ends," the face said, voice flat and monotone. The words were panicked words, but they were like the commentators at a particularity dull chess match might speak. Detached of tone or emotion, with no change in volume or pitch. "The message from the Doctor remains. Do you wish to hear it?"

"Count the shadows?" Atlantis frowned.

Again, she pushed the button, waving to Atlantis to hush. She kept in mind the message though. Count the shadows. What was with the shadows? Why count them to live?

The monotone voice spoke again, but there was somehow a subtle difference that made it clear that someone else had recorded this message. "Hello, this is the doctor. If you are standing in the light, listen to this message, if you are in the shadows, run, just run, do not stop, just run, Find a transporter and a computer terminal, turn the terminal on, then transport, you will be saved. As best you can be. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. If you are in the light, stay there. Count the Shadows, don't let your shadows touch. As long as you have a single shadow you are safe. Turn around and leave the way you came. This Library is now the home of the Vashta Nerada, this space has been ceded to them. Count the shadows, as long as you have the one you should have, and no more, you are safe enough to leave. If your exit is cut off, you can be saved. Use the teleporter once the computer is on, Cal will save you. Your body may survive. Again, if you have more than one shadow, I am sorry, I am so sorry. If you can still leave... Run. Just run." There was a moment and then the voice resumed. "Message ends."

The computer terminal beside the monolith spring to light, a bright blue screen with a red symbol and the letters CAL.
